Three brutal monsters came to my rescue. Now who's going to save me from them?
Every beat of my heart is the tick of a time bomb, reminding me to squeeze as many thrills out of life as I can.
A horde of nightmarish monsters jumping me in the middle of the night? Nope, that's too much even for me.
So when three demonic figures leap out of the shadows to my defense, my choices are trust my unexpected champions... or die. Not exactly a tough decision.
The beastly men wrench me away from my home, claiming they'll keep me safe. They say there's something special about me—something the others want to devour and they mean to protect.
My monstrous saviors are just as brutal as the creatures they fought off, damaged in ways I'll never understand. But the more we dig into the mysteries surrounding my existence, the more I catch glimpses of tenderness beneath their vicious exteriors.
And the touch of their fangs and tentacles makes me feel so shockingly alive, it's hard to remember why I ever feared them...
Until I discover the real reason they're protecting me—and a power that could either save us or doom the entire world.

It is wonderful to see the whole series and the new bonus epilogue all together now for our listening pleasure. I was hooked by this series after listening to the first book, I loved each one and had to keep listening.
Chosen by Villains - Having listened to Flirting with Monsters already the concept of Shadow-Kind is not new to me and so when I saw that Eva Chase had written a new series, featuring different shadow-kind I was intrigued enough to want to listen. This first book introduces us to Quin a young woman, the recipient of a heart transplant some years ago, who knows she is living on borrowed time because her new heart has a limited life expectancy. Because of this she always pushes herself to achieve her goals and always tries to make a difference and leave her mark.
When one night she is attacked by monsters she is unable to defeat, she's happy when three yet bigger more frightening monsters come to her aid. She finds herself whisked away to an island by a gargoyle, where the villains/monsters who are Higher Shadow-Kind tell her they will try to keep her safe from the other shadow-kind hunting her.
Quinn is fierce in a way that you can easily relate to, she knows her limitations and recognizes the danger she is in but refuses to give up fighting. I love how she accepts the strangeness of her situation and doesn't let it get to her too much. The three guys are interesting each a different species of shadow-kind who whilst in the mortal realm retain one of their shadow-kind features when they take their human form.
Torrent is their leader and is quite intriguing with his abnormal looks, we have yet to learn what species he is but he does have tentacles! Lance is a dragon, and the feature he retains in his human form are claws, then there's Crag, a gargoyle, who can't hide his square jawline, he's my favourite so far! though I'm bound to change my mind as we get to know the guys and their backstories more.
As the story progresses we find out why she's being hunted, and why the guys were there to "rescue" her, as with all of Eva's books we are left holding our breaths by the cliffhanger situation she leaves us in. But there is no need to worry about that now as this set contains the whole series.
Courted by Beasts - This book picks up where the first book left off and continues at a rapid pace. Quinn and the guys are forced to flee, but they end up in the clutches of Rollick, the demon who sent Torrent, Lance and Crag to watch her in the first place. But having chosen loyalty to Quinn over loyalty to him Quinn is forced to make a deal to ensure her and their safety.
Quinn's personality is developing, she's not only learning what her powers mean she's forced to face the fact that she just can't walk away and go home, We still don’t know who or what is controlling the shadow-kind coming after Quinn or what their end game is.
In the end, she's forced to trust Rollick but we still don't know his plans for her, I for one am dying for the answers to these and many other questions.
I have to say that the ending shocked me, although I partly understood why Quinn did what she did, being cruel to be kind but it still seemed harsh!
Defended by Demons - This book picks up the story shortly after the startling ending of the second book when Quinn using her magic compels Crag, Lance and Torrent to leave her side for their own protection. This left Quinn alone with Rollick, can he be trusted? Rollick has a plan which he hopes will lead to more information, but what they learn is almost more than Quinn can handle.
The more time they spend alone without the other guys around the more Rollick allows Quinn to see the man as well as the demon but in doing so he begins to realise that there is much more to Quinn than he thought possible, Whilst they are fighting their battles with evil and learning more about who is controlling the shadow-kind Crag, Lance and Torrent are tracking Quinn waiting for her magic to wear off so that they can return to her.
When the team, now reunited confronts one-half of their enemy they realise they have a bigger battle than ever to fight going forward.
Hailed by Fiends - In this instalment, Quinn and her monsters have one last opportunity to defeat the Leviathan, but her transplanted heart, the organ which has been at the centre of this whole story seems to be growing weaker and isn’t handling the stress well. Their only chance is to build an army to defeat their enemy before her heart fails, something we've known from the beginning is inevitable. But will this be possible?
You can't help but feel for all five in this relationship, how will the guys cope when the inevitable happens even if they have somehow managed to defeat the Leviathan? How must Quinn feel knowing that her life is coming to an end soon?
I'm not going to say any more about this book, no spoilers from me, but what I will say was Eva, yet again, managed to surprise me, I loved the ending.
This book brought to an end a series that fans of paranormal reverse harem stories will love, each of her guys/monsters if you will is uniquely different not only in appearance and skills but their characters too, they are all truly individuals. Each of them brings something else to the table and even the baddies are wonderfully different too, I don't know how Eva keeps coming up with such exciting and different storylines, but I for one am glad she does!
I have been enthralled by this series, I've loved every single book in it, and each one ended on a cliffhanger which made listening to the next book a total necessity. Eva Chase always comes up with characters and storylines which are engrossing and different.
The new bonus epilogue takes place about 11 years after the original story finished and brings us up to date with what Quinn and the guys are up to as well as what their plans for the future are. It rounded off the series beautifully.
The narration by Amber Lee Connors and Aiden Snow is excellent, I love how Amber brings out Quinn's vulnerability and her strength and how Aiden manages to bring to life all the shadow-kind creatures we meet.
This is told in alternating, first-person POVs and was intriguing right off the bat. Throw in a women on the run, after being saved / while actively being protected and trained by hot monsters and … yea, all the makings of a fun read.
It remained intriguing throughout and I caught me off-guard when it ended—so glad I have the whole series!
Monsters. Set in Jacksonville. Forced proximity. Bodyguard romance. Training. (Fighting, self-defense.) V!rgin hero. Chronic illness representation. Mystery. Group scenes. Tentacles. Betrayal.
4 stars.
Courted by Beasts
Thankfully, this picks up right where book 1 left off, because that was intense! I was too caught up in the world-building and action scenes to do anything but strap in and enjoy. So fun!
Monsters, and really ALL the supernaturals. Betrayal, lies. Captive vibes. Set in Florida. Sorcery training. Battle scenes. Slow-burn / brewing romance.
4 stars.
Defended by Demons This one also, thankfully pics up right where its predecessor left off and you’re definitely going to want to just have all of them handy. The action was pretty nonstop in this one, if it wasn’t a fight scene, it was a steamy scene, or lots of danger while plotting/planning and leading up to more fight scenes. Set in the ‘real world’ but with lots of supernaturals, this is urban fantasy done well with expert world-building.
A romance that had been very slowly brewing in previous installments picks up some steam, adding to the feels. The danger also ticks up. Excellent.
4 stars.
Hailed by Fiends
The fun really starts in this one, as that war that was brewing is fully underway now, it’s time to choose sides and no one’s survival is guaranteed. I enjoyed the more human aspect that came back up in this one, and still, the ever-evolving emotional complexity of Quinn’s monsters. This installment really packs it all, but you’ll definitely want to come in having read books 1-3.
Basically non-stop action.
4 stars.
🎧 Audio: The narrators were AMAZING—performing the book, rather than simply dictating it and they both had beautiful voices, so it made for a very pleasant listening experience. 5 stars.
Designing a Legacy - bonus epilogue
It’s always good to see a little update / get a glimpse into the future. Excellent , nice touch.
Chosen by Villains Quinn, Torrent (has tentacles), Lance (Dragon), Crag (Gargoyle), Rollick (Added later; Demon). Torrent, Lance, Crag are tasked with watching and making sure that Quinn isn’t here. Rollick informs them there is something going on with her and the other Shadow kind are taking notice. They start watching her, and when she gets attacked they step in. Quinn as it turns out received a donor heart and that seems to be catching the attention of the other shadow kind. Quinn is studying to be an architect, she loves to fix things and wants to build something incredible in her life. When three monsters come from nowhere to save her, she learns that there is more to her life and the world around than what she knows. She learns about the shadow kind and about the different monsters in her world. She starts to develop a relationship with each of the guys while also running from the beasts hunting her.
Courted by Beasts This book 1 picks up where book 1 left off. Quinn and the guys are betrayed by someone Torrent trusted. Forced on the run from Rollick eventually Quinn and Rollick come up with an arrangement. He will teach her to harness the power within and protect her and the other monsters. I don’t want to give too much away here.
Defended by Demons Quinn and her guys (Including Rollick) are on the run and trying to stop the shadow beings from attacking humans. Let’s just say things are not what they seem. Shadow kind are being forced to do things they don’t want to do. I wont say more.
Hailed by Fiends The final COUNTDOWN!! Sorry I really wanted to write that. So basically Quinn and her guys are investigating further into the beings that are trying to take over humanity. This was filled with plot and spice. I loved it.
The audiobook for this was so good. Amber and Aiden did an amazing job of bringing this story to life. I definitely enjoyed this book more because of this. I loved every min of reading/listening to this book. It really sucks you in. The spice was spicing and Rollick with the 2 you know what’s! My god someone save me.
TITLE: The Heart of a Monster: The Complete Series GENRE: Urban Fantasy Romance AUTHOR: Eva Chase TROPE: Reverse Harem (Why Choose) TYPE: Series (The Heart of a Monster Omnibus) POV: Multiple POV MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 / 5
⚠️ Check trigger warnings; this dark content is for +18 readers
WHAT TO EXPECT: 🖤 Reverse Harem / Why Choose 🖤 Slow Burn 🖤 Monsters 🖤 Demons
WHAT I LIKED: ✔️ Disability Representation ✔️ The whole series in one book ✔️ The Audiobook ✔️ Great world building ✔️ Strong heroine
The Heart of a Monster: The Complete Series includes Chosen by Villains, Courted by Beasts, Defended by Demons, and Hailed by Fiends
Torrent (the mysterious leader of the trio), Lance (the funny flirt) & Crag (the loyal protector) set out on a job to observe and protect the mortal girl Quinn, assigned to them by their boss, Rollick. The task is to keep an eye on the girl and determine what attracts Shadowkind to her. Quinn is living life on borrowed time after receiving a heart transplant nine years ago and getting closer to the typical time when a transplanted heart begins to fail. She is trying to live her life to the fullest by thrill-seeking when she can, enjoying the life she has left, and hoping to leave some legacy with her dreams of becoming an architect. Quinn is unaware of the three monsters assigned to observe and protect her until they make themselves known to save her from an attack.
I enjoyed this group of interesting characters and the relationships that slowly built between them. The amount of spice felt appropriate for the reverse harem storyline and never felt too much. I loved that this storyline felt different from others I have read, holding my interest and keeping me entertained until the end. I am giving a rating of 4.5 / 5 stars.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. First, in these books, monsters aren't monsters, per se. They are just any paranormal. In her world, the paranormals live in a shadow realm and can cross through rifts into the human world. Many prefer to do so, as our world is so much more vibrant.
The FMC is a young woman who had a heart transplant as a child and is living on borrowed time. She comes into contact with a group of paranormals who try to kill her, while another trio of them saves her and takes her away. She is relatively accepting of them, which surprises the–this is her introduction to that world. Obviously, many hijinks occur from then on... (No spoilers here!)
Heat level is hot, but not frequent–the scenes properly fit the storyline and aren't there just for heat level.
I would give it 5 stars except for what is one major issue for me: she's mortal, and has a short life span, even for a mortal. They are immortal. That issue is never addressed, and leaves you wondering why a demon a few thousand years old would want to spend 20-30 years with a mortal. That's just a blink of an eye to him. To me, this thread needed tying in some way: a blood bond that extends her life, the sorcery power could. Something...
I loved listening to this series, especially with the new bonus epilogue. It had me hooked from the start. "Chosen by Villains" introduces Quin, who, after a heart transplant, lives life to the fullest, knowing her time is limited. When attacked by monsters, she's saved by three shadow-kind guys and whisked away to an island. Quin’s fierce and relatable, and her rescuers, each a different shadow-kind, add intriguing dynamics to the story.
The series keeps up the excitement in "Courted by Beasts" and "Defended by Demons," with Quin making tough choices and forming alliances to survive. The suspense and cliffhangers made it impossible to stop listening. The final book, "Hailed by Fiends," brings an intense conclusion as Quin and her crew face their biggest battle yet. Eva Chase’s storytelling and the fantastic narration by Amber Lee Connors and Aiden Snow made this series a thrilling ride from start to finish.
I’ve read a few series with monstrous beings from another realm setting the scene. This series ranks right up there with the best! Quinn, in school to become an architect, heart transplant recipient, attacked by things she’s never seen before. Vicious little beasties bent on chewing her up when she is saved by 3 people she believes to be men. This is the beginning of events so incredible for her to believe. Torrent, Lance and Crag end up convincing her they will protect her no matter what comes their way. And boy, do they ever! I wholeheartedly recommend you dive head first into this world Eva has created for us.
This was a great series! I listened to the audiobook practically nonstop and finished it in just a few days. Quin is an intriguing main character, she had previously had a heart transplant, and because she knew she wasn’t going to live a normal life, she never took a moment for granted. I love that about her. The twist (cliffhanger??) at the end of book one was unexpected, but luckily the story continues since it’s the whole series in this book! The monsters shadow-kind are interesting and without even realizing at first, the title... loved it! Will definitely listen again and recommend!
Quinn is on her way home after work and she likes to walk through the park that is by her house but this night the park just seam off. And it is when a monster jumps out at her she not sure what she seeing but when another comes to her rescue she thinks she has lost it. When three monsters save her, she think she has lost her mind. But soon she finds out why it’s the heart that she got from a donor to save her life but that’s not how it’s working out. So enjoy these book and enjoy the drama and how they save the world!!
I liked it. I wish it was a little faster paced at times, but I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. The narration was perfect. Although it was a little slow-burn for my tastes I had hoped we would see more as the series progressed but maybe the anticipation is what the author is going for, to me it get a bit annoying at times. I can definitely appreciate the buildup and the foundation to the whole plot the author is creating at least.
I love, love this series! Eva Chase creates amazing worlds that draw you in and keep you wanting more. This is no exception. I love the shadow world and those that live in it. Each creature has their own unique abilities that make them pretty fantastic. This series is addictive and the narrators are fantastic.
Everything Eva Chase writes is GOLD - I especially love the full boxsets, as you get all the hours and hours of entertainment in once place (or credit as I listened).
I love love loved this series - the build, the tension, the danger, the heat. Took us through a rollercoaster to get that HEA. Never stop!
With a very engaging suspenseful plot, this RH monster romance series was very hard for me to put down. The narration only amplified the authors written word and I highly suggest it to anyone looking for a fast paced spicy storyline that will have your heart pumping from beginning to end.
I’m hopeful this will lead to more books written in this monster world.
I enjoy a well written sex scene, but there were times the sex scenes that were written didn't effectively relate to the storyline. They felt out of sync. Almost like they were added for entertainment value, but not really contributing to character enhancement.
The Heart of a Monster series was fantastic. Nonstop action at every turn. From love interests to saving the world saving herself through every turn, Quinn is just all that. We see her personal struggle and the journey she goes through to save a world, that is, trying to destroy her. This was a great read, and I found it couldn't put my 'book' down.
Overall, this earns a four. Quinn and her men, Torrent, Lance, Crag and Rollick...still not happy about that last one, but who asked me? There were a couple books in here, mainly two, that were lower, but I went ahead and averaged it out.
I really enjoy this series I have the ebooks and have Started collecting the audio and PB as well i enjoy out MFC shes strong and resilanit and I devoured this story! the naration is the right kinda flow for the characters
I wasn't as invested in this series as the first. I felt the main character wasn't as interesting and didn't pull me in as much. I also felt the men were underdeveloped. It was ok, but I found myself skipping sections just to be done with it.
I loved this series about Quinn and her monstrous guys. Lots of fast paced action and steam, and some touching moments too. I'm happy that I get to binge them all in one convenient collection.
I received a free copy of the audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This series did not disappoint. All parties curious and drawn together throughout the story. The ending was predictable in one way but I'm glad. And being able to see 16years on was a nice bonus.
This is Eva at her best she writes one amazing and fantastic story that you will absolutely love with fantastic characters and narration that will keep you going to the very end
DNF 50 % in. I just felt more and more that everything was just too stupid and ridiculous. Not the stuff with dubble d*cks and tentacles. But yeah. I lost it somewhere after that.
I loved Quinn as the FMC; her attitude towards living her life to the fullest without being too reckless and still having a massive heart makes her really likeable. Amber Lee Connors really brought Quinn to life and I enjoyed her performance as she showcased Quinn's determination and her vulnerability. Aiden Snow played the MMCs and although Rollick is my favourite character, his performance of Lance was such a breath of fresh air. As this is dual narration Connors and Snow both play all the majority of the characters but they are all easily distinguishable.
This was quite a heavy listen at 30 hours but I did enjoy the story. I may have picked it up and put it down a few times but the story still kept me engaged throughout. I loved Rollick's arc as he was the most interesting character and I was ready to make a protective circle around Torrent by the end of the series (why was it always him getting badly injured?). Lance was good fun but also had some trauma to work through to balance him out and I think that's possibly why I didn't connect to Crag as much he didn't seem to have as much going on in comparison but he was still a solid addition. I also loved the cameos and the flashforward epilogue to round out the series.
My interpretation of the star system; 3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again 4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series 5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
