Amanda Lohrey is a novelist and essayist. She was educated at the University of Tasmania and Cambridge. She lectured in Writing and Textual Studies at the Sydney University of Technology (1988-1994), and since 2002 at the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
I like the idea of music and especially singing being food for the soul. As a cure for malaise singing is probably as good as any. Smiling, sleep, reading a book, meditation seem to work for me. So does whistling, because I’m not particularly good at singing. This is an interesting look at the restorative powers of giving the vocal chords a work out.
