Was the assassination of the British Prime Minister in 1812 the act of a lone madman or an American government conspiracy? On the 4th July 1776 Adam Chartfield is born being the product of an illicit affair between the niece of the governor of Virginia and the commander of British forces. Rejected by his high born father Adam is raised by his English grandmother. In 1801 Adam is recruited by his cousin, the future President Madison, to spy on the British government .However, Adam is torn between loyalty to the country of his birth and the country he loves. The story unfolds with Adam's exploits in India, France and America. In the process the "turncoat" wins the trust of British Prime Ministers and American Presidents. By 1812 tension between America and England has grown to the point of war.Adam is reluctantly drawn into the personal intrigues of leading politicians and is forced to conspire to topple the corrupt British government.
