R.R. Mangold

R.R. Mangold grew up in a tiny Oregon town, where she fell head over heels for theater, fashion, and writing—basically anything that would let her play dress-up and write about it. She eventually made her way to a fashion school in Los Angeles, where she filled journals with scribbles of movie plots, play ideas, and novel outlines. Finally, she decided her dreams couldn’t hide in the shadows anymore, and To Touch A Reaper became her debut published work!

She’s a storyteller at heart. Her work centers on emotional, character-driven narratives—often with paranormal or speculative elements. R.R. crafts tales about love, grief, healing, and transformation. Whether it's a ghost lingering in a Victorian home or a celestial being falling for a mortal, her stories feel layered, heartfelt, and deeply human even when wrapped in the supernatural.

Her stories often center queer protagonists and explore love, loss, and emotional intimacy. She treats those relationships with nuance, care, and often a touch of spice.

When she’s not writing, R.R. is likely hanging out with her husband, two kids, and her loyal hounddog in Utah. You’ll find them either gaming like pros or hunting for the coolest rocks around!

This book had a very interesting premise. Very unique. I really enjoyed reading this. It was a paranormal romance for sure. The ending was interesting. I can't decide if I enjoyed the ending or not. I guess there really isn't much to say. It was worth the read and I choose this book because two different booktoker was recommending so I decided to take a chance on it. Glad I did.

CW for death of loved ones

I read this in about two sittings, and it was such a cozy, positive look on life and appreciating the time you have in front of you. The characters I think lacked some depth, but that wasn't really the point of the book, so I could overlook it. If you need a heartwarming story about love despite the world being against you, and sacrificing for the person you love, this might be a good book for you!

obsessed

I am literally obsessed with these two. Jimi and Mila’s love was adorable. I was smiling throughout most of the story until the end when I was crying. This was such a cute story. I love the characters so much. This story has the right of amount of plot, love, spice and Romance. It was just too cute. I have so much more to say but I don’t want to spoil it. This is one of those reads where you will feel several different emotions. I feel the best stories are the ones that make you feel and this story definitely gives you the feels

It was a really pleasant book, it had mistakes but hey it's indie, we can forgive that. The writing style was good and the characters great.
What was the most interesting to me was the lore created. I really enjoyed the reapers, they were such a cool concept.

However.
HOWEVER.
With that ending, this should not be marketed as a romance.
I will die on that hill, I'm sorry.

If you are wondering whether or not you should read this book, and reading this review will be your decision maker, I implore you, please read to the end.

When I started reading, I was aware that this book is a debut novel, so I expected to see some errors. Most debuts have something that’s a little bit off, as they’re the author’s first experience writing, editing, and publishing a book. Totally normal. At first, the errors within this novel were apparent to me. I have a tendency to notice things like grammatical errors, punctuation errors, and syntax issues (a me problem). I taught middle school and high school English, so my brain has been trained to watch out for things like run-on sentences and sentence fragments. There are many in this book.

BUT HERE IS THE TRULY BEAUTIFUL THING: The story quickly captivated me, and I was so invested in discovering why this reaper was experiencing the anomalies she encounters that as I continued to read, I stopped noticing those things. Most often, the little grammatical and punctuation errors yielded to the story. And a BEAUTIFUL story it was.

I had received a heads up prior to reading that there were going to be some spicy scenes in this book. It is a paranormal romance, after all. And… I’m just a little bit picky about the writing of these kinds of intimate scenes. However, I will say after reading this book that the scenes – as graphic as they can be – totally fit the book. This is a story about a reaper who has existed for thousands of years without ever experiencing the sensation of touch or taste. When she finally finds someone who can see and touch her, and she begins to fall for him, things get a little bit... well, spicy. Everything is a new experience for her. I would say that those spicy romance scenes in this book are well deserved and do make sense within the boundaries of the story, accentuating the “everything is new” experience this reaper is living.

In the end, I was very pleased with this book. I was thrilled that the story and the relationship between the two main characters held my interest as it did, even to the point that I could totally ignore errors that would have otherwise really bothered me. The paranormal aspects in this book – and the world creation – was artfully done. I was also very satisfied with the way the book ended, and although I was happy with the closure, I was left wanting to read more from this author.

I am excited to see how this author’s next story develops!

“It was the first photo of me ever taken. Nothing special. Just a solid white background. Jimi said it was the most beautiful picture he’d ever seen.”

this was the first book i read on my kindle so it will definitely always hold a place near and dear to my heart. it wasn’t my favorite but i still enjoyed the story.

there’s a lot of typo’s and grammar errors in the writing. the romance moved way too fast in my opinion and it didn’t give me the chance to really enjoy their love story like i wanted to.

mila is a reaper, jimi is a human. it’s literally love at first sight for these two, so instant lovey. no humans can see reapers but for some reason he can. when jimi found out she was a reaper, he literally didn’t care? like don’t get me wrong, this book isn’t realistic but damn… he really brushed it off like it was nothing lol. and then when he found out that she was there at the bus accident where his sister died? bro was so nonchalant.

they definitely had cute romantic moments for sure. one of my favorites was when jimi got headphones to pretend to be on a phone call so he can talk to mila in public. that’s so sweet.

going through this entire book and seeing these two do literally anything and everything to be together.. risking their lives!! mila gets turned human because jimi made a deal and for what… for him to literally get taken away and DIE so shortly after, like let them be happy!!!!! the ending made me so mad. i was happy mila got to live her life but come on man. i felt like i was on this entire rollercoaster for nothing.

the idea of the reapers is so creative and unique, i loved it. the small detail of adding mila’s name to the chapters once she said it was really cool. loved the incorporation of angels, death and demons as well!

overall, didn’t love this book, didn’t hate it. it was a quick and easy read and it’s definitely like something i feel most people wouldn’t have read before.

3/5 stars.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The premise was unique and engaging!

Yes there were grammatical errors, but they were also easy to look past.

We follow a nameless reaper who’s been around for centuries. The reaper has recently begun asking questions about their existence, wondering if reaping is the only thing they’ll ever do. Wondering where the souls they reap actually go. Wondering why humans (which they love) are so mean to each other.

On the other hand, Jimi, a (human) pediatric nurse, is drifting through life. Working his days away, disappointing his father, trying to decide what to do with his life. Until one day he meets the reaper.

Again, the premise was awesome! I kept wanting to read more. More about the reaper’s world. More about their relationship. More about what life will look like as it’s constantly changing throughout the book.

My problem came with the characters themselves and their “love.” Mila and Jimi felt very two dimensional. I didn’t pick up much personality from either of them. I would understand Mila not having much at first, but that was an opportunity to grow her character and show her transformation. Instead, the entire plot from Mila’s perspective was “I can’t live without him.” But why? What about him can you not live without? Once we found out she was taking Jimi’s soul, I assumed she felt this way because they were essentially bound together. But then it became clear she only loved him because he could see her. That’s it! She never spoke about personality traits as reasons for her love.

But ya know what, neither did Jimi. He ONLY ever talked about her looks. He sacrificed himself for a hot girl due to lack of communication, but the tragedy does add to the story nicely.

Also, nurses aren’t people who gave up on becoming doctors? It’s two different school programs? It kept pulling me out of the story because I was like “that’s not how that works.”

CW: Death. Lots of death. Demon.

This debut novel was sweet and satisfying and inspiring. Death is a real character, and they have employees. Reapers are supposed to be invisible, helping spirits to go away after their body dies.

When the nurse Jimi starts to see reaper, their story changes. She can't even introduce herself because she doesn't have a name - yet! Drawn together almost like fated mates, their love develops and deepens as Mila starts to become human. The first time she can taste food! And feel emotions and feel touch! The spice is well-earned.

I love this book for the creativity, multi-culturalism, great characters, and the love.

This story is about the power of love and how it tries to conquer all. Some successes, some fails, and the price of failure. And the power of love shines through to the end. Friendship love, not only romantic love. How people react under the once-in-a-lifetime kind of stresses and what it says about them and how they show love. Demons make deals, Death does not make deals, and the love still endures.

I received this ARC free in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. I am ordering a hard copy for my collection at my own cost.

To start off, this is a romance book that isn't my usual niche. And when I say it was probably my favorite book that I read in March, it's true! My goal this year was to step out of my comfort zone and what I'm used to reading. I went into this book blind and truly enjoyed it.

Rena did a great job captivating my attention from the first page, and kept my attention to the very end. It was a truly unique romance novel, incorporating death as one of the main characters and showing the readers how can you find love when the odds are against you. I loved that death was instead a female character because it's always a male character in every book I've read. The story really had me all over the place with emotions, but I bawled my eyes out like crazy. Rena has a beautiful way of portraying emotions so organically and it really helped me to resonate with the characters and the story fully. There were a few spicy moments which was nice, but I loved the storyline a lot more than the spice (which is a BIG thing coming from me, I love spice too much). Rena is definitely an author I will be following and reading her future novels. She knocked this debut novel out of the park! Highly recommend adding Rena to your indie author TBR. She did not disappoint me! :)

I’d give this like 3.5, I picked this up during the fantasy stuff your kindle days and was intrigued by the description. The pro’s were I really liked the plot, I felt for the characters, I was INVESTED. I think my only cons are there were some typos, which isn’t that bad but it was just enough for me to notice and knock a bit off my rating, and towards the end I think-this may be on me and not the book- but I just completely guessed the ending that they would end up switching spots so I didn’t get as emotional as I thought I would since I played the whole thing out already. I will say the epilogue was sweet, I do wish we got more of them together while Mila was human they deserved more time 😭 but like I said I think it’s more on me than the book itself, I would still recommend it to someone with the note that there’s a few spelling and grammatical errors but I enjoyed it! I am looking forward to seeing more this author’s work!

Stunningly, heartbreakingly, beautiful. One of my favourite reads of the year.

Mila is a reaper who has lived centuries of her existence, watching humanity from the shadows and reaping souls for her boss, death.

One day when roaming a hospital, she’s spoken to buy a man called Jimi.

She doesn’t know why he can talk to her, when no one else in her existence has been able to, but the connection between them is undeniable and they can’t seem to keep away from each other.

This is a beautiful romance between two beings that want nothing more than to experience love.

The way that the author writes about human tragedy and wrong doings, juxtaposed with the beauty that is love, and what we will do for those that we love is what made this book one of my favourites all time!

Everyone should read this. Oh, and it’s also got some delicious spice!

✨️BOOK REVIEW ✨️

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶🌶

I got To Touch A Reaper on the last #StuffYourKindleDay but have been eyeing it for well over 6 months now. A Reaper has discovered a man who can see and touch her(something no mortal should be able to do) and they fall madly, hopelessly in love. He makes her feel human. If only there was a way to make that reality...

This story is full of heartache, intertwined destinies, and plot twists reminiscent of The Gift of the Magi.
I enjoyed the story and got misty eyed at the end but if you're a crier I'd recommend grabbing the tissues before you start.

Overall 4 stars, I'll probably read it again in fall for the vibes. I look forward to reading more of R.R. Mangold's works in the future.

“There must be consequences if I fuck a reaper. Death could show up mid thrust and kill me. We need to figure out this connection first. Before we risk it all, but a little taste couldn’t hurt.” To Touch A Reaper

This story follows a reaper named Mila, who discovers that Jimi, a pediatric nurse, can see and hear her. This isn’t supposed to happen, reapers are completely invisible to humans. Drawn to this abnormal phenomenon, Mila stalks Jimi in hopes of learning why this is happening. To her surprise Jimi can also touch her, which leaves them both with more questions than answers. Their immediate attraction to one another sets them on a journey to figure out how to remain in each other’s lives. I loved how vulnerable both characters were willing to be with each other. And the lore of the reapers explained through Mila’s POV made me really feel for her. The ending had me wanting more!

This novel was enjoyable right from the start. It started so sweet between Mika + Jimi and I was SOLD. However, imo Jimi became kind dumb (to me) and mind you I LOVED him when he was introduced! His name was about to go on my book boyfriend’s list! BUT… towards the half way mark I instantly stopped liking Jimi… I personally found him to be kinda toxic, ex: on the rooftop. Also his decision with summoning a demon to be with Mila then at the end he ended switching spots with her cause Death ain’t no dummy.

Although I still enjoy this book & the conclusion was obvious, I did look past a lot of things at the end. After all, how and why would they even be together without some major, dramatic repercussions?… I don't know, but halfway through the book, something just stopped the spark for me.

I am amazed by this story. It was so beautifully melancholy. The story idea itself was so unique - a reaper and a human fall in love when they’re not even supposed to be aware of each other.

I loved Mila and Jimi and the way they changed and learned from each other as their relationship grew. You couldn’t help but root for them the whole time.

Imagine if Romeo & Juliet + Supernatural were put in a mixing bowl and then baked into the most delicious chocolate chip cookies.

5⭐️ /3🌶️

Fair warning: The ending left me gasping so be prepared!

If not for the errors, I would have given this 4 stars. There were SO. MANY. ERRORS. More than is acceptable for a final published book, IMO. But, I loved this story. It was different and refreshing. A cute lil love story with a few sprinkles of spice thrown in. The author uses lots of describing details, which I loved. It felt a little rushed, only because I definitely would have liked to spend some more time with these characters. Overall, it was a great book, and I would recommend it to others.

NOT A ROMANCE IT IS A LOVE STORY (if you catch my meaning).
I picked up a signed copy of this book at my local romance bookstore, Lovebound Library, and it has been sitting on my shelf for months. The book follows Mila, a Reaper, who comes across a human man who can actually see her. The book is well thought out and I appreciated that it didn't have a specific religious ideology. I did appreciate the one reference to Mormonism (the author is local to Utah). I would read another book by the author.

This was a cute read! It got me in the feels! This is nothing like what I've read before. I'm not sure about how I feel about the ending. I think it's worth reading, but what I had a hard time with was the grammar and typos. I normally look over these with Indie authors. But I had a harder time with this one. I still think that this was a very cute story, and I still enjoyed reading this book. I just wanted to bring awareness to the reader in case other readers have a problem with grammar and typos. Some people have a hard time over looking that stuff.

Honestly this book could have been a 5 star but all of the misspelled words, wrong words in general and improper grammar killed the 5 star. If I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did I would have probably given it a 3 star. The end was gut wrenching.
This book will have you questioning so much, laughing, and crying.
It keeps you reading because you have to know how it unfolds.
She left it open ended at the conclusion so if she came out with a sequel or even a small novella to finish the story completely that would be fun.

I love a book that doesn't have the happy ending you're rooting for the whole time. I feel like they are few and far between, and it is always a nice surprise, even if not for the characters.

I grew to love Jimi and Mila. They're love for each other was a beautiful thing to experience. I enjoyed this take on death and what could happen after life ends for all of us. The ending was gut wrenching as Jimi viewed her unable to show her he was near. I am excited to read the accompanying novella soon!

I have never read a story about reapers that was this beautiful. This was such a new and captivating take on reapers and what it could be like in their perspective, I absolutely adored it!!
This book had the perfect level of heart break and excitement. I love Mila’s development and how you could feel her emotions through the writing. I also love how you could feel the tension between jimi and Mila.
I really hope there’s more coming because this was perfect!

If you’re a fan of spicy books with a supernatural twist, read To Touch a Reaper. Warning through: This was a spicy spicy🌶️ story. More than I normally read.
Still, there is a lot of heart poured into these pages.
I also loved the rotating perspectives between the two main characters.
I’m thrilled to hear the author is working on a sapphic supernatural novel set in the same universe, and I’m going to immediately pick that one up when it releases.

It was a good story. It was entertaining. The writing style flows, allowing for an easy read. There was a couple of rough spots, but everything else made up for it. The characters are soild. Mila is everything I can adore in a fml. I don't mind Jimi either. I get his motivations and where he is coming from. This has an amazing romance. The descriptions on par. I got hit in the feels a few times. I honestly wish there was a bit more to the story, but that's just me being greedy.

There have been 3 books I’ve read all year that have caused me to ugly cry and this is one of them! The knife twist of fate in this read is hauntingly beautiful. Jimi and Mila’s love is tender and pure. Not to mention the spicy scenes, yes please!!!!

I cannot wait to see what Rena has up her sleeve for future books.

A COOL READ

I really enjoyed this story. The author created a light read out of heavy subject matter. Her characters are rich with just enough detail and well thought out. I loved getting to know Jimi and Mila. I'd be super interested in a novella about what happens much, much later in their journey.

Beautifully written book with a different writing style that I’m not typically use to! I really liked the plot of this story, being very different from most books I’ve read. There were some slow parts that I struggled to get through. But towards the last part of the book the plot started to pick up and ended beautiful in a heartbreak. Such a perfect book for cozy season.
