They’d been walking for about a half an hour when Marcus slowed as they saw a man walking toward them and gestured her to move further inland so they could avoid the other man. A spitting sound from behind them had Marcus reaching for the gun hidden behind his back, but he fell to his knees before he could reach it.
“Run,” he whispered.
A man came out of brush that hid them from view of the house they were in front of. He was holding a gun with a silencer attached to the end. Horror filled Isabella as she looked down and saw the bright red blood staining the back of Marcus’ shirt.
Oh god, he had been shot!
