Good Throughout!

This story has a great beginning with a horrific middle and a beautiful ending.

Karsten Groll, lives in Germany, and his life is filled with misery and misfortune. He also feels his life is full of bad luck and he intends to make things better.

So he is still grieving for the loss of his parents and his brother’s death. He has survivors guilt.

Can he think of something to make things even? Can he take away the guilt? Only reading this book is going to tell you. The ending is beautiful. 💞

Highly recommended.

There is a lot packed into this short story. kudos. Its clear and compelling; however, tighter language and less internal dialogue/main character back story would have improved the story. Frankley, aslong as we know enough to understand the motivation of our protagonist we know enough, additional character backstory at some point leads to short story obesity.

Isn't that the beauty of a short story? We get to skip to the good part.

Just good tight writing

A pleasure to read word. His phrasing of words creates a clear picture very quickly. His economical use of words allows his story to move at an enjoyable pace. The three stories that I have read have been very enjoyable reads

Kevin Wignall has a very dark side and writes in realistic terms around the world of contract killing and hitmen.
Advent First Published, December 2012 in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine.
The story does have a pre-Christmas feel and advent is mentioned but it is the black side of life that concerns this short tale of revenge and perhaps redemption.
Karsten Groll alights from a train at Cologne station; while commutors hurry home his steps seem laboured but no less determined. He remembers with some joy this city but there is no real happiness in his heart as he has travelled here to make amends for his brother's murder. He knows that in the process, even if he succeeds he will killed in any event.
I liked the thought of what would it take for us to want to kill someone? Is everyone capable of carrying such thoughts through? Advent, does it still hold something special to influence people over the Christmas season?
Wignall's brilliant novella is gripping and driven; it doesn't gloss over the evil in peoples' hearts but hints at the power of forgiveness and a hope for humanity.
