Little Miss Stubborn is very stubborn and when other Mr Men and Little Misses talk about seeing a unicorn, she refuses to believe them and says unicorns don’t exist. What happens when she finds the unicorn in her garden? You’ll have to read it for yourself and find out! Mr Men books bring joy and happiness to both children and adult
I am fairly well acquainted with this book, having read it scores of times over the last couple of months (in a big, chunky, durable braille-print facing-page edition) and very well acquainted with a little Miss Stubborn who is not quite so round or purple and is considerably more real even than the unicorn...
As well as being a bit of silly fun, and the opportunity for all sorts of regional accents, this book is a meditation on the limits of self-satisfied critical thinking. It also reminded me of Jesus' parable of Dives and Lazarus (found in Luke 16), which ends with the character of Abraham in dialogue with a rich man (in torment) after death, who pleads that the poor man (Lazarus, in paradise) be sent back to earth to warn his profligate brothers of coming judgement: Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.” “No, father Abraham,” he said, “but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.” He said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”
Quite ironically, Littlest chose this book for bedtime reading (yes, for someone who is stubborn about choosing her own kinfe and fork for dinner and *not* wanting to eat her dinner!) and it is indeed another bit of fun. Little Miss Stubborn obviously has yet to learn anything in life and here we have her stubbornly refuting the whimsical reports of Mr Men and LIttle Miss who tell her about a Unicorn.
This could, of course, could be an allegory about how critical thinking can go wrong, or how faith in something (or the lack of something) could be shown to be unfounded when in the faith of evidence for that something.
But, it's probably just a story about how funny Little Miss Stubborn can be with her steadfast refusal to be swayed by others, I suspect.
Day 9 of my Mr Men and Little Miss Advent Calendar...........
.......... is Little Miss Stubborn and the Unicorn! This is one I have read before - I thought I was stubborn, but Little Miss Stubborn out-stubborn's me!! It's a good book but not a favourite.
Lillie Miss Stubborn really proves her name in this silly stubborn tale for refusing to believe what everyone around her sees, even when it’s staring her right in the face.
