Excellent book indeed despite the heart wrenching story as it was based upon a real incident. So much in life is hard to fathom as we will never understand why during this life down here about the devastating tragedies even though we know they occur sadly. The avalanche happened during 1910 as train cars were swept down a ravine during the night while a snow storm was raging.

I learned more (for some) about these true events that happened in both in my country Canada as well as the USA so they are certainly educational but also are done in a story style. These historical fiction based on true disasters by Barbour books are impressive!

When a book stirs the emotions in a sense with the heart feeling grieved, tears shed, or the other way with one of outrage or laughter...then it has an effect most of us want. It stays with the readers as some stories leave me feeling floored or in awe they are so powerful.

As for Christian and spiritual elements; fabulously done as there were plenty and all so aptly placed throughout with characters wrestling with the heartache despite loving and trusting God as being so doesn't spare us from sorrows as we are living in a broken world. Knowing the Lord helps us during times of crisis, devastation as He is our guide, comfort, Saviour,...friend who who is with us as we are told we will have trouble down here that's for sure! Forgiveness was evident with a former bully who narrowly escaped death but was rescued by the very ones he had made life a misery for. It was a satisfying ending with characters that were realistic but not over the top etc.

Anyway; another wonderful book by this author I can gladly recommend.

One day can make all the difference. Such a tragedy in history!

I didn’t really connect to the characters though, and had a hard time cheering on their “romance?”.
The timing/pacing felt weird to me.

In When the Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss, the cold, ruthless nature of the avalanche is more than a day to remember — it’s a fierce reminder that faith is forged in the most brutal of storms. This story asks you to witness a disaster and it invites you to walk through the wreckage with the characters, grappling with whether faith can stand firm when the world around you is buried under the chaos and danger.

Griffin caught my attention right away. He’s not your typical hero with a cape or a grand gesture. Instead, he’s a quiet, hardworking man who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. And yet, there’s this steady, unshakable peace about him. When the avalanche hits, it’s as if his faith, honed through years of hardship, becomes the only thing that doesn’t crumble under the weight of snow and chaos. It’s not about being fearless. It’s about trusting God despite fear. Griffin’s motto seemed to be something like: Don’t ask for an easy road, ask for a faithful heart.

Then there’s Lillian, who starts out unsure of where she belongs. She’s caught between a life she thought she wanted and a connection with Griffin that she’s not sure she’s ready for. Her spiritual journey throughout the book is about finding her voice, her purpose, and her trust in God when she’s been left in the dark. As she faces the avalanche of uncertainty in her life, it reminded me that faith isn’t always about having a clear path ahead. Sometimes, it’s about choosing to take the next step, even when you can’t see the whole picture.

This book goes beyond surviving the avalanche; it’s about the fierce reckoning that follows and how real faith endures. How do you rebuild? How do you keep going when the ground is unstable, and every day feels like it could fall apart? Griffin and Lillian’s relationship doesn’t happen because of some grand romantic moment—it grows because they learn to trust each other, trust God, and their faith in Him in the midst of everything falling apart. The wreckage leaves physical scars and carves out spaces in their hearts where they find something so much deeper than amazingly courageous survival.

What I really loved about When the Avalanche Roared was how Lauralee Bliss took this historical event and didn’t just let it be a plot point. She used it as a mirror for the characters’ personal avalanches—their doubts, fears, and struggles. There’s this rawness to how faith is shown here: it’s not clean, it’s not always pretty, but it’s real. Lillian’s growth is a perfect example of this, as she comes to terms with the avalanche inside her own heart—the one that’s been blocking her from embracing her own faith, her own purpose. It echoes the truth of Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

There’s a raw, unyielding kind of strength that rises from the rubble of disaster—and from facing the storm inside yourself, when the snow piles so high it swallows everything you thought you knew, and all that’s left is the deafening roar of loss. When the Avalanche Roared is about standing tall and fixing your eyes on Jesus when everything you once trusted is buried beneath fear and grief. This story slams home the truth that, in the crushing weight of life’s avalanches, the one thing you can cling to—the one thing that never crumbles under pressure—is God.

Barbour has such great series and this one, A Day To Remember, is so informative. The story of the avalanche in Wellington, Washington in 1909 was one that I had not heard of. But through the author’s words, I was taken back to a small, remote town covered in snow and I connected with the people who went through the catastrophe. What started out as getting to know the inhabitants, grew in anticipation of the event and continued with not only the avalanche but the aftermath and rescue efforts. Through it all, Ms Bliss wove a story of wavering faith that was recovered and a sweet romance between Lillian and Griffen that was based on mutual respect, love and purpose rather than obligation and material advancement. She also used the stories of a few real people who survived the event.
If you are looking for a story that tugs your heart and increases your knowledge, then try this one out.

When the Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss was a difficult and emotional read; I wasn't certain I could complete the book. Recent events in western North Carolina and northeastern Tennessee following Hurricane Helene brought this catastrophic event closer to the heart. Although a slow start, the development of the characters and setting led to a connection that might, otherwise, not have existed. I could visualize the characters, the town, and the events. These moments in history are remembered by reading the A Day to Remember series listed below.

3.5 stars (3/10 hearts). I'm a huge fan of reading/listening to stories of national disasters, especially lesser-known ones, and remembering the victims. I have never heard of the Wellington 1910 railway disaster and was very eager to read this book. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected. I found this book boring and poorly written for a solid 50%, and only became marginally more interested once the tragedy happened. The writing was very much telling, with little showing, and occasionally very repetitive. I'm disappointed that I feel this way, because I liked the characters—Griffin especially—and was very, very interested in the accident—enough to look up a documentary later on. The ending wasn't bad, and the theme was good; but overall I just felt let down, because it could have been so much better—it had such potential!

Barbour Publishing always develops fantastic series for their readers with a Powerful Message that doesn’t shy away from God’s Truth. Barbour Publishing’s A Day to Remember series continues this standard, creating a series where each book centers around a different day in history where life changed forever. When the Avalanche Roared is the fifth book in the A Day to Remember series. When the Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss centers around an avalanche disaster in the town of Wellington, Washington in the 1900s. Before the avalanche. Lillian arrives in Wellington to help her Cousin as her Cousin awaits the birth of her first child. Plus, it gives Lillian a chance to escape planning her wedding. When Lillian arrives, she meets Griffin, a railroad worker. Griffin is a wonderful man–always helping others, working hard, and having a deep Faith. The only thing that Griffin lacks is the ability to read. Being sheltered all of her life, Lillian was in for a shock as to how life in Wellington would be. Lillian soon fell in love with Wellington–it’s life and it’s people–not only helping her Cousin, but also those in need, and taking a job helping the Town’s Postmistress. Lillian also helps Griffin learn to read. When the trains are stalled on the tracks in Wellington and people are stuck on the train for days due to the weather, Lillian and Griffin help the Passengers and Train Workers. When the unthinkable happens, Griffin and Lillian struggle with Faith in God and where life will lead them next, and whether they will continue to be in one another’s lives.

I loved getting a chance to read Lauralee Bliss’ When the Avalanche Roared and enjoyed reading it! I thought Ms. Bliss did a wonderful job setting up the story of the events leading up to that fateful day. I enjoyed meeting Lillian and Griffin. I love how Lillian was written to be sheltered and spoiled, or at least that was how she was perceived by others in the community, and me, at first, but that when Lillian arrived in Wellington, her true nature shined and blossomed. I love that even when Lillian was afraid or hesitant to do something new, she stepped up and did it anyway. I believe Griffin is my favorite character in When the Avalanche Roared. Griffin, to me, was an all around sweet guy. I love that Griffin wasn’t afraid to go above and beyond the call of duty if that was warranted and that Griffin wasn’t ashamed of where he came from or to be bold in his Faith, despite being mercilessly bullied for it. I love Lillian’s Faith Journey in the book! I love how Lillian was real about the state of her Faith to Griffin and, how, because of her honesty, Lillian’s desire for a deeper relationship with God grew, giving the opportunity for a relationship with Jesus to grow and blossom, should Lillian choose to accept it. I love the way Ms. Bliss portrayed the Faith Journeys of Griffin and Lillian, showing both sides of the spectrum and that we all have questions about Faith in God at times and how hard it is to hold onto our Faith in those moments at times. I loved learning about avalanches through When the Avalanche Roared. I thought Ms. Bliss did a wonderful job of portraying the incident well, writing the incident delicately while staying true to what happened and including interesting tidbits that surrounded the event into the storyline. I enjoyed the escape that When the Avalanche Roared gave me and loved learning about a day in history that I did not know about before. If you are looking for a great escape that teaches you lessons of working through your Faith and encourages you to Trust God regardless of what is going on, then I highly recommend When the Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss! I am also looking forward to reading more of the A Day to Remember series in the future!

While tragedy appeared to tear lives apart, it also had a way of knitting people together for God’s great purpose.”

What an amazing series Barbour has produced with this series, A Day to Remember! Each book recounts a little-known tragedy in North American history. Though related by theme, each novel is a standalone. Lauralee Bliss pens the latest, exciting release, When the Avalanche Roared.

I am pleased to say I didn’t cry as I read this book. But I’m pretty sure my heart did. My heart broke for the “gentle giant” of a man, Griffin Jones, a Wellington, WA rail worker in 1910. Unable to read, possibly mentally slow (I couldn’t decide on this one), his fellow workers play pranks and denigrate him at every opportunity. Life in the Cascade Mountains is brutal, but Griffin’s coworkers make it nearly unbearable! Yet, Griffin, because of his faith, is kind, seeking to help others whenever he can, and resists retaliation against his enemies. What if it could be said of all of us Christians as it is to Griffin: “You showed me a God who wasn’t some steeple or pages in a book but a living Person who cared.”

Lillian Hartwick travels to the small railroad town of Wellington to help her cousin Elizabeth, who is expecting. When Lillian becomes depressed by the difference between her home city and this hamlet, Griffin takes it upon himself to suggest Lillian help in the mailroom. Lillian learns to love the Wellington people, but how will her rich fiancé (who has been away) feel about the town and her growing friendship with Griffin? Will he understand the town’s desperate needs following the tragedy?

Besides Griffin, I loved the characters of Sarah Covington and Mrs. Bailets. Sarah Covington does not give in to the peer pressure of those around her and succumb to panic, but rather quotes and truly believes verses like Isaiah 40:31-“They that wait on the Lord renew their strength and will mount up with wings like eagles.” Mrs. Bailets seems to be present wherever and whenever there is a need.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.’ When you got Him leading you, you don’t need nothing else.”- Griffin’s mom

“His understanding is a picture much bigger than ours. And we can leave our hurting questions with Him.”

“You can’t pretend before the Lord. He knows your heart, everything about you.”

“Give this to God… He can carry it.”

“He couldn’t give her hope, though with God there was always hope.”

I love anything to do with history and that is why I have enjoyed this series of A Day To Remember. Each book is a standalone read but all have the common theme of a lesser known disaster that I had no clue had occurred. On March 1, 1910 an avalanche struck in Wellington Washington that changed lives and the town forever as tragedies tend to do. Seeing how the town and surrounding areas pulled together and did all they could to save lives was emotional and had me in tears. I loved Griffin Jones and his heart for the Lord even though others taunted him and tried to make life miserable for him. I enjoyed the bond of friendship he established with Lillian when she arrived to help her cousin before the disaster. Watching them grow and develop was like they were part of my community. Great characterization and a slow build had my attention from the get go. This story will stay with me for quite awhile as I digest the historical significance of this event. I highly recommend adding this and the rest of the series to your must read pile.

When the Avalanche Roared is the 5th book in the A Day to Remember series which focuses on natural or manmade disasters in North America. I have read all of them so far--so I was obviously ready to learn more about this relatively unknown tragedy. It's weird that I lived in WA most of my life and never heard of this devastating event! It should be part of WA history.

The story takes place in the small town of Wellington, WA--not too far from Everett, WA. Wellington is more of a passing through kind of town. It's main purpose is to maintain the railroads going through the major Cascade tunnels.

The book begins a bit before the actual disaster as we meet Lillian and Griffin. Lillian is in Wellington to help her cousin Elizabeth who is expecting a baby. She is from a wealthy family in Everett and "engaged in name only" to the president of a timber company. She's dissatisfied with how she feels about her future fiancé and was only all to happy to leave for awhile when he goes out of town. But Wellington isn't what she thought; neither is the shack her cousin lives in. What is a society woman like her going to do in this backwoods town?

Griffin works for the railroad as a hauler and general do whatever. He is made fun of daily by a group of co-workers and considered stupid because it became known that he doesn't know how to read. But he's a hard worker and puts his all into keeping his head down and doing his best. When Lillian arrives he is overcome by her beauty--but knows a "dummy" like him doesn't stand a chance. But he still tries to help her out whenever he can and enjoys getting to know her.

Over the course of the days/weeks, it ends up with Lillian helping out at the post office and over time helping him learn how to read. He desires to read the Bible and although she doesn't have the kind of faith that he does, she helps him.

Then the disaster hits.

As you can imagine, this is a predictable ending--guy doesn't think good enough for girl. Girl leaves. ect ect ect.

This one didn't hit me as much with the emotion. It seemed more light in reading. But there are messages of faith woven in throughout the book.

I mostly enjoyed learning about the disaster over anything else. I always read the Author Notes at the end of these books to learn more.

3 Stars

𝟺 𝚂𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚜 ★★★★☆

Books about historical events have always fascinated me, so when I read the synopsis for 𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙰𝚟𝚊𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚑𝚎 𝚁𝚘𝚊𝚛𝚎𝚍 I was immediately interested.

𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙰𝚟𝚊𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚑𝚎 𝚁𝚘𝚊𝚛𝚎𝚍 is set around the 1910 Wellington avalanche, the most disastrous snow avalanche in U.S. history, and follows the story of Lillian, a young woman unsure of her recent engagement, and Griffin, a railway worker facing his own struggles. This book is the fifth book in the series 𝙰 𝙳𝚊𝚢 𝚝𝚘 𝚁𝚎𝚖𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛, but it can most definitely be read on its own.

I will say I found the beginning a little slow, but it quickly picked up and I sped through the rest of the book. I thought the book was well-researched and well-written, it was nice and short, and I really enjoyed the historical aspect. Lauralee Bliss also did a great job writing about the avalanche. I think her writing really brought to life it’s magnitude and how tragic it was. I liked how she tied it all in with the message of faith and gratitude. Regarding Lillian and Griffin, I thought they were great protagonists. I especially enjoyed Lillian’s faith growth, and felt a lot of sympathy for Griffin’s struggles.

Overall, I’m really glad I picked this book up, and would recommend if you’re in the mood for a short historical book set during a natural disaster.

When the Avalanche Roared is the fifth book in the amazing A Day to Remember multi-author series. I love this series whose stories bring to life lesser-known historical disasters. The event in this story is the deadly Avalanche of 1910 in the small village of Wellington, Washington. Ms. Bliss skillfully combines fact and fiction in this heartbreaking, emotion-packed story which is also filled with hope and faith. Through vivid, detailed descriptions, I could picture the destruction and feel the trauma of the event. This storyline differs from the others in the series in that the actual disaster does not appear until half-way through the book. The first half of the story focuses on the railway business, storm trapped railway passengers, and residents of Wellington (most of whom were Great Northern Railway employees). By the time the disaster strikes, you are totally invested in the characters which heightens the impact and devastation of the event. The main characters socialite Lillian Hartwick and railway worker Griffin Jones are an unlikely match. I love the way they grow individually and how their romantic relationship develops during the tragedy. I especially appreciate the strong, encouraging faith message of hope and God’s sovereignty running throughout the story. I totally enjoyed this book and highly recommend it and the series.

I had not heard of the 1910 Wellington Avalanche prior to reading this book and was horrified to learn of what transpired in that town over a century ago. The author did an incredible job retelling this event, blending historical facts and people with her fictional characters to create a gripping tale that told of such utter devastation and heartache while yet offering glimpses of hope and strengthened faith. Lillian Hartwick, an engaged high society belle who came to Wellington to assist her cousin Elizabeth, and Griffin Jones, common laborer for the local railway, couldn’t appear more different which made this opposites attract romance all the more appealing. Griffin’s strong and comforting presence in the face of adversity and tragedy bound the two together emotionally and his strong faith and prayer life encouraged Lillian in her own spiritual walk. The avalanche tragedy forever changed people and caused them to think through what was most important to them. While it is hard reading about such terrible events, each of the authors in this series has done a wonderful job balancing the devastating tragedy while penning a tale filled with light and hope.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley. A positive review was not required and these are my own and honest opinions.

When the Avalanche Roared is a fun historical fiction novel that brings you the facts of the catastrophe but with fiction to make it fun. This is part of a six-book series. The entire series focuses on natural disasters and their aftermath. They bring horrible times in history to life and let you see what people might have been doing or what it might have felt like. They bring history to life!

I’ve had the pleasure of being able to read all of the books so far. And I can say with certainty that they are amazing. The authors really pour themselves into the work. They must have spent hours on research. And then they create a story that allows them to be where the disaster happened.

Griffin is our hero.
He’s not your typical swarthy handsome and oh-so-strong hero though. He’s described as slow. Maybe even a bit dim-witted. But reliable. And faithful. And true. When push comes to shove he’s also the one who is going to do what is right no matter the cost.

Lillian is our heroine.
She’s unsure of herself. She’s not sure where she belongs. And she’s waiting for her fiance to come rescue her from this backwards town.

Griffin likes Lillian but she doesn’t even see him because she’s waiting to leave. She’s not getting involved. And she’s definitely not looking for anything good to come from her stay.

But then disaster strikes. And they are forced to work together to save people. During that time she sees Griffin for who he really is. And she gains respect for him and maybe something more.

This was a great book! I truly enjoyed reading it. It’s going on our shelf of historical fiction to pull out when we study events in history. Because I don’t believe a book has to be non-fiction to allow you to learn about history. And because it’s a great piece of history plus it’s a clean read for my older kids.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

FINALLY, a book that definitively PROVES that I am right to hate snow!!!!!!!!!! This Texan girl does NOT like white precipitation!!!!

First of all, I'd love to know how the authors of this series came up with the topics for their books. I had never heard of this avalanche before!!!!! I LOVE how historical fiction is like the BEST way to learn about underappreciated stories from history, and this book is an excellent example of that!

I love how Lauralee introduced the setting of Wellington by contrasting it with the protagonist's big city hometown. It perfectly highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the characters and made it where I really cared about the town when the disaster happened!

I loved watching Lillian, the protagonist of the story, grow as a character. She stars the story as a timid girl who doesn't know what she wants or how to direct her life. By the end of the story, she has become a strong woman who relies on God to be her strength and is willing to stand up to whomever she needs to form the life she wants for herself. I love watching as she grows closer to God. I also loved the scenes where she plays with children. She's so compassionate, and I LOVE IT!!!

Griffin is a sweetie. I love seeing his forgiving, resilient nature. It is so inspiring how in spite of his difficulties, he still makes God a priority in his life. I also loved how he is willing to ask for and provide help when needed.

Overall, I loved getting to read this novel and learn about an event I'd never heard of before. I loved how Lauralee introduced a world and characters that were so easy to get to know and fall in love with. If you enjoy historical fiction, you should definitely try this book!

I received an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.

When The Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss is a Chrsitian Historical Romance book. It is Book 5 in a new 6 part series of historic American disasters that transformed landscapes and multiple lives. Whether by nature or by man, these disasters changed history and were a day to be remembered. The Series is written by Various Authors.

The storyline is set in 1910 and is centered around the small railroad town of Wellington, Washington. The 2 main characters are Lillian Hartwick and Griffin Jones. I was encouraged by the Faith of the characters in this book. Lillian has come to this small town from California to help care for her cousin. She is learning a lot while in town, as she has never really been a caregiver, rather people have taken care of her. Griffin is a railroad worker who struggles with co-workers who tease and taunt him due to different ability issues. Griffin and Lillian become friends and Griffin even encourages Lillian to work at the PostMaster Office and she enjoys that job also. March 1, 1910 is a day that changed many lives in the small railroad town. An Avalanche hits the town and Lillian and Griffin race in to help find survivors. I LOVED watching the pair become even closer as they raced to help others. Lillian is engaged and her fiance is due to come to the small town in the Spring. Griffin is strong in his faith and Lillian is encouraged by his faith. Lillian is really rethinking her future as she is enjoying life in the small town. I have enjoyed this series, but I think this book was my favorite out of the 5 I have read! The story is one of Faith, Romance and History. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance Fiction. GREAT BOOK!

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 is the fifth book in the 𝐴 𝐷𝑎𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 series. Each book features a historic disaster. It grabbed my attention quickly.

This story covers a historic avalanche in Wellington, Washington in the early 1900s, and the many tragic events happening in recent days made this tale especially moving. Though an avalanche is a different kind of catastrophe than the tragic hurricanes, fires, and plane crashes that have recently impacted the US, each of these tragedies are similarly dreadful, memorable, and life changing.

This story features themes of faith, hope, and love amidst tragedy, and follows the journey of characters Lillian and Griffin. The story reveals dark events, damage, and heartbreaking loss, but through it all, the light of faith shines bright.

“𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴.”
~A quote from the book

Lillian and Griffin are intriguing characters. It is so rewarding to witness their growth, in both their faith and their relationship. Lillian’s spiritual journey is touching and relatable, and Griffin stole my heart as he carried his difficult load with faith and temperance. Because of this, quiet, resilient, warm hero, this book is my favorite in the series.

A single instant. Nothing will ever be the same....

The Day To Remember series has been a fascinating one. Each story featuring a different disaster that changed the lives of the survivors and the landscapes around them. Some of them changing history as well. I'm honestly a bit surprised that I had never heard of the Wellington Avalanche before this book, especially considering my love of history and relatively close proximity to its location. Part way through reading When The Avalanche Roared I looked it up online and found a photo of the disaster and I must say that it is impossible to even begin to comprehend the power of nature and the horror of what the people went through.

I must admit that the story started out slow for me. And, as important as the disaster itself was, it was the aftermath that really spoke. The grief, questioning, and anger of the characters as they grapple with how God could have allowed such tragedy is where When The Avalanche Roared truly shines. Lauralee Bliss' heart wrenching portrayal of a town pulling together through unimaginable loss and horror, coming to terms with what they've been through, and slowly forging a new life is one that won't be quickly forgotten. It was that part of the story that I read straight through unable to put the book down.

As with the rest of the A Day To Remember series, this book was emotionally moving. Lauralee Bliss' contribution to the series is not to be missed especially if you enjoy fiction based on true and dramatic events.

This Historical Christian fiction read is well penned with the research and detailed information with the difficulties faced to keep railroad lines cleared of snow during the winter. This is another worthy read in A Day to Remember series of how a disaster changed lives and is an event that should not be forgotten.

I was in the midst of the story from the beginning till the end. I felt the emotions of family members who were separated because of their jobs, especially those working for the rail line during the winter. Lillian journey to Wellington to help fill a request and something to do while her fiance was away gave way to more than she anticipated. The luxuries she knew were no longer available, but her gentle ways and the kindnesses from a simple, hardworking worker inspired her to not to complain. I loved the characteristics of Griffin and his faith kept him going despite how he was treated by others. When trains were stranded due to the endless snow the natural disaster hit that caused unbelievable damage, lives loss and so much more. The rally of the town folks and traveling a dangerous slope for assistance was emotional but filled with history, determination, aspiration, faith and insight to the tragedy that changed the landscape of America in the Cascades area of Washington state. I admired Lillian with all the challenges she faced and acceptance of all despite social economic status or their intellect. One never knows how God will orchestra lives when relying on him instead of social obligations, as the author beautifully illustrated in this Christian Historical Fiction read.

When the Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss is the fifth book in the “A Day to Remember” series. This historical Christian fiction is based on an actual event and some real people. It will keep you reading. Lillian Hartwick goes to the small railroad town of Wellington, Washington, to care for her cousin and assists the postmaster when February snows bring all train traffic to a halt. Griffin Jones, a railroad worker who works odd jobs for the railway while enduring taunts from other workers, has tried his best to gain Lillian’s interest. However, she is engaged and waiting for her fiancé’s arrival from California.

As a socialite, Lillian initially struggles with life in Wellington, but she appreciates the community as time passes. The author builds a story and characters that drew me into the book. I found myself unable to put it down. With trains stranded in Wellington, Lillian attempts to assist her cousin with her newborn while trying to help with the people and children stuck on the trains.

This book packs a lot into its pages, with some sweet, courageous, touching, and heart-breaking moments. With a supporting character who completely changed from the beginning to the end of the book, I loved getting to know all of the characters.

So, if you want a work of historical Christian fiction, check out When the Avalanche Roared by Lauralee Bliss and the rest of the “A Day to Remember” series. Each stand-alone book will keep you interested.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Disasters can happen in the blink of an eye and change people's lives forever. In this Day to Rember story, we have disaster that took place on March 1, 1910, when an avalanche buries the trains, and the snow keeps coming down hindering the town and rescue efforts. This is a story of survival and helping others survive the brutality of the disaster.

Lillian is a young woman who really doesn't know what to do with her life. It is already planned out, even down to whom she will marry. But does she love him, and does she want to have the life of a wife whose husband is gone most of the time due to his career? The answer keeps coming back to not really, but does she have the backbone to say no?

While she waits for her fiancé to return from his trip, she goes to help her pregnant cousin further in the mountains. What she doesn't expect is the disaster that is looming and a man that makes her rethink all her possibilities.

Griffin Jones is an illiterate man. Even though he tries not to let that hold him back, it does set a certain air around him. When he meets Lillian, he will do all he can to help her as he falls quickly in love. Can these two make a team to help when disaster strikes the town?

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

I love how the author builds the story slowly as she introduces the characters. It allows readers to get to know each character and follow their transformation. This story centers around a tragic event that affected many lives.

Lillian comes to the small town of Wellington, Washington to help her cousin and also assist the postmaster. She seems to really like her job and gets to know people as they come by for a package or letter. The year is 1910 when railroads became a much needed way to travel. Lillian is also excited to see her fiancé soon as she anticipates setting a wedding date.

Griffin who happens to be my character is a man who is not able to read.p which at times makes it difficult for him at things others take for granted. He is so kind and easy to like. When he befriends Lillian a great friendship is developed. Griffin is grounded in his faith and helps Lillian as she struggles to find her worth.

The story is definitely emotional as a disaster happens. What I like is seeing how people came together during the tragedy. As Lillian and Griffin grow their relationship they begin to see where God wants to use them. I loved the faith element in the story and historical facts that bring readers to understand how a tragedy can bring beauty from ashes.

When the Avalanche Roared is the fifth book in the A Day to Remember series. The series is based off historical events. This story is written by Lauralee Bliss. I have really enjoyed this series. Some of the events I have read about, but some, like this one is new to me. I always love when I can learn.

Lillian Hartwick is engaged. She is waiting for her fiancé to come from California. She has been in the small railroad town of Wellington, Washington, caring for her cousin and assisting the postmaster. However they experience a lot of snow and everything comes grinding to a halt. Griffin Jones, who works odd jobs for the railway has been trying to catch Lillian's eye. Griffin is made fun of because he is not the brightest crayon in the box.

On March 1, 1910, a devasting avalanche happens. Griffin and Lillian rush to help those affected. What I love is despite how bad Griffin has been made fun of, he jumps right in to assist even those who hurt him. I love how the author not only wrote about a literal avalanche, but life that was changing for those in the story. They have real struggles. I thought the author captured the time period beautifully.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit or allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

The disastrous Avalanche of 1910 is the topic at the heart of the story. In a Great Northern Railway stop, Wellington, difficult weather with unceasing snow lead to an avalanche taking the lives of nearly 100 people.
The author brings the story to life, giving backgrounds to historical people and a couple fictional people. Trapped eight miles by way of a treacherous trail from the town of Scenic, WA, the village of Wellington was the center of the disaster.
Debutante Lillian of Everett, WA ends up in Wellington to distract herself while he intended takes care of business in San Francisco. Her cousin, Elizabeth, is in Wellington and soon to give birth. Lillian is there to lend a hand. The unlikely yet loveable hero is Griffin, a laborer for the railroad. He has a reading deficiency which makes him an object of ridicule among his coworkers. But, his heart and his faith are large enough to overcome the disdain.
I think it is important for stories of the past to be told to us, so we can understand and appreciate the circumstances.

I thought this was a good story that captured the heartache of this natural disaster. I grew up in WA so it was interesting to read about this event since it is one that I had never heard about. I liked how well the author described the scene because I have traveled through the Cascades multiple times and could image an avalanche happening. I thought the author did a good job of making us feel connected to the characters and helped us to feel what they felt. I liked how each person had to deal with the trauma in their own way and how it changed them. I liked how the tragedy shaped Lillian and helped her to see who she really was and where she wanted to be. I also appreciate the research that went into this story and the author was sensitive to the lives lost in this tragedy. I think the books in this series are very well done. Not only do they give us a glimpse into events that are not widely known but they also help us to see the hand of God in tragedy. I would recommend these stories.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Several years ago I read a very detailed account of the horrific 1910 avalanche that devastated the remote town of Wellington, WA and caused the death of dozens of stranded railroad passengers. I still remember the photos of the huge train engines outfitted with circular snowplows meant to keep tracks and tunnels clear. But after days of unending snow followed by an unseasonal thunderstorm, a roaring avalanche pushed train cars off the tracks and buried them in huge piles of snow. Lauralee Bliss has written an emotional fictional account of that real life event. When Lillian Hartwick's fiancee announces that he will be away for months for business in California, she follows her mother's advice and travels to small town Wellington to help a young cousin who is pregnant with her first child. Elizabeth's husband works on the plows of the railroad and is gone for long periods of time, but once Lillian arrives she finds that she, too, is lonely and with not much to do. Raised as a genteel lady, she knows her mother would be horrified, but Lillian takes a job helping sort the mail. And she also meets a large, kind(but uneducated) laborer who seems to be sweet on her. It is through Lillian, Elizabeth, and Griffin that readers will learn the story of the avalanche and the stories of those who perish and those who survive. Underlying is a tale of faith tested and faith triumphant.

So hard to read but couldn't put it down. This is a fantastic fictional account of the real avalanche that killed nearly 100 people including travelers stuck on a train. Sweet and romantic, inspirational and utterly heartbreaking. Lillian, transforms from the rich socialite to a young lady who truly loves and exhibits grace to all around her. She and Griffin meet while she is engaged to a wealthy business owner back home, but Griffin's simple ways and his deep faith appeal to her more and more. When tragedy strikes Lillian and Griffin work together with other survivors to do what they can to help friends and strangers alike, and even a few enemies. The aftermath of the avalanche is so horrific that the survivors are forever changed as they fight their own fears, heartaches and depression brought on by the disaster.
Will Lillian and Griffin find a way past the death and destruction and into each other's hearts? Read this book full of historical facts and heartfelt fiction. You will remember it long after the final page is turned.

When the Avalanche Roared is another great addition to Barbour's A Day to Remember series. While stories about natural disasters will inevitably have emotional and difficult subject matter they can also shine with hope as this story does. Lauralee Bliss recounts interesting historical facts about this tragic disaster wrapped in a touching story full of heartbreak, deep faith and love. I especially enjoyed the main characters, Lillian and Griffin and their journey through loss and love. We lived our own personal natural disaster 10 years ago being total loss in an EF4 tornado. I tell people all the time that the journey was more difficult than I could ever have imagined but the good and the blessings far outweighed the hard. I see real value in telling the stories of many of these events that I knew little of and using it as a platform to remind people that God will always be good and always be enough. I have really enjoyed reading all the books in the series and look forward to more.

"I guess what's impossible for us to understand is possible for God. He understands why it happened. He understands the loss. He understands the pain. I think that's what we have to hold on to. His understanding is a picture much bigger than ours. And we can leave our hurting questions with Him."

" While tragedy appears to tear life apart, It also has a way of knitting people together for God's great purpose."

I started this review with the with these two quotes from the book. I think these quotes really mean a lot if you if you really think about it. this book is a historical fiction, but it is also a love story. It is full of heartache with a happy ending. It is the 5th book in the series, but they are all standalone novels.

I recommend this books for readers that likes history and fiction and love story all in one book.

I received a complementary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

I have been enjoying the "A Day to Remember" series of books that this is a part of. It is interesting to learn about some of the great natural disasters that have happened. I liked that there was a biblical faith thread in the story and I liked Griffin and his desire to live like a godly man. The writing style didn't flow for me. But like with anything, different things appeal to different people so I'm sure other people will fit this style better than me.

I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
