An ancient evil is rising once more. War is coming. The time for a new Pendragon to rise and take over where Arthur left off is now.
Elizabeth has lived a sheltered life, never getting close to anyone, afraid they would just leave like everyone else in her life has. Her post-college plan was take a boring office job at a multi-billion-dollar company owned by a family friend, then decide what she wants to do with the rest of her life.
Destiny has other plans.
Magic and supernatural beings are the stuff of legends, found only in books or on television. Not in real life; not in her real life. But Elizabeth quickly finds herself at the deep end of a magical war that has been brewing for centuries—a war where she is supposed to be the hero.
Problem is, she has no idea why.
She doesn't know about the legendary blood running through her veins, or the power and responsibility that comes with her legacy. She's completely clueless in the realities of her very mythical existence, and it will take an army of allies to help her stand against the monstrous threat determined to exterminate the line of Pendragon from the face of the earth.
the Great Library of Alexandria, King Aurthor and his Knights at the round table, or The Gardens of Eden.
Buckle in.
The story follows college graduate Elizabeth as she seeks the purpose of her life. Moving back to her hometown, Elizabeth seeks an "internship" at a family friend's billion dollar company. When suddenly, storybook characters start to come to life and the fate of the realms lie on her shoulders.
I must say that The Last Pendragon is a good old fashioned young adult fantasy book. With that being said, the language is very much young adult but it does not deter from the impact the book is capable of making.
However, the first two chapters start rather quickly and we are flung into the new world and the mountain of world building from the get go. I think the pacing could have been slightly tweaked, especially in the middle of the book and things start to slow down. We get an access amount og dialogue in the second half of the book, which might seem excessive to some, but it does help with the questions I had at the beginning of the book.
There is one character in particular that I found absolutely intriguing and I hope we get to see more of him in book two.
⚠️SPOILER!!!⚠️
There is a spoiler coming so please be warned.
⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
There is romantic tension between Elizabeth and one other character that I felt was not needed in the book as it did not make sense and didn't really drive the story forward. I guess one could say that it puched Elizabeth to be more focused on training and it makes sense to grow an attachment after training 1x1 with someone for so long but it felt a little weird to me.
Or maybe I just love Shane and I hope Elizabeth gives him a fighting chance.
Wow just wow Jeanette!!!!! Where do I even begin?! I just finished reading it, and I have to say, it’s a solid five out of five stars for me! The story follows Elizabeth, the FMC who knew nothing about her origins, and trust me, things get wild pretty quickly. From the very first page, I was hooked.
It's packed with all sorts of fantastic elements like vampires, elves, faes, and let’s not forget a Sexy Santa that adds a fun twist. The pacing is fantastic, and there’s never a dull moment. Just when I thought I had a handle on things, unexpected surprises kept popping up.
And I have to warn you, if you decide to read this (which you absolutely should), make sure you have the second book ready to go because the ending leaves you on a total cliffhanger, and honestly, you won’t want to wait to see what happens next. I can't recommend it enough!!!!!!!
Elizabeth never knew her legendary bloodline until events spiral out of control when she comes home from college. What follows is a tale full of magic, unique worlds and species, and untold stories.
This was a very pleasant read. It was fast paced and full of action with a lot of information to take in about the worlds and magic systems in place within the novel. I enjoyed reading this and definitely would recommend it. Curious where the series will go!
Unique Arthurian inspired story with incorporation of dragon shifters, vampires, elves, and more. If you love fantasy and anything to do with Arthur and Arthurian times, you will enjoy this book. I absolutely loved it! The storyline was genius with so many twists and turns to keep you at the edge of your seat. Speaking of edge of your seat, the story leaves you on a cliff hanger which means I cannot wait for book 2!
This is my #1 favorite book of the year! Fantasy, History, Forbidden Love, Vampires, Demons one named Bates, Elves, Magic & Excalibur. I mean what else could you want?
The Last Pendragon by Jeanette Queen provides a new perspective on the Arthurian legends. All of the major players are at least mentioned, and many are present. As an amateur Arthurian scholar, that checks a box for me in relating stories of Camelot. There are also surprising additions to the Round Table, which I found to be OK. While I usually consider myself somewhat of a King Arthur purist, the setting and plot of this book opens new possibilities.
This book is set in the modern day with a character who is blissfully unaware of the supernatural until she is not. This is basic fare for urban paranormal books along with the love triangle and the being who is supposed to be evil but is fighting their nature. This is not a negative. There is a reason these tropes are standard. Queen makes good use of them while making them her own.
This is the first book in a series, and it does show. The plot can sometimes get muddled as new characters are introduced and an attempt is made to flesh them out. The auth is generally good at exploring important characters, but some characters are left to later installments to discover how they came to be where they are. This is ok since there was not room in the book to go into detail on everybody, though sometimes there are multiple references to looking for answers that could have been left to the next book.
While I would normally make comments on if there were editing errors, I will leave this out of the review. This is an ARC, so elements may shift or change. If they do or do not, it will not change my overall opinion of the book.
I give The Last Pendragon 4 out of 5 stars. The story is fun and progresses well. There are no real slow points in the story once the plot is established. The topic and changes made to it make sense in a modern world with our modern take on supernatural and paranormal literature. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and definitely recommend it!
This review is just my opinion and absolutely will not be shared by everyone. Please take it with a grain of salt. I gave this book a "soft" 3 stars because I think it has potential and would have benefited from additional edits.
To be honest I struggled with rating this book. On the positive side I thought the story was intriguing. A young woman recently graduated from a prestigious college with a degree in archeology finds out her family is tied to generations linked to King Arthur and she is the Last Pendragon who can take up the sword. Set in current time but there are mystical worlds and creatures. Sound entertaining and fun to read.
My issue is the FMC. She comes across to me as a whiny, immature teenager who through 60 percent or more of the book keeps questioning everything, constantly acts shocked and surprised and complains she can't be the chosen one. It got so annoying to read. Also some of the side characters were difficult to take.
Perhaps if there had been more character development/more depth I would have enjoyed the book more. The book leaves off on a cliff hanger so perhaps the next book in the series will have more substance to the characters and story.
The Last Pendragon follows Elizabeth, a young girl who has lived a sheltered life, never really finding her place, afraid that anyone she tried to get close to would leave, just like everyone else. But when destiny is involved who can really say what will happen? When life as she knows it gets flipped, Elizabeth gets thrown into the magical world, smack bang in the middle of a war. The question is, can she be the hero the world needs her to be?
With magic, history, shifters, vampires, elves and romance this book has the lot. This story is definitely plot driven rather than romance but the sprinkle that is magical and leaves you wanting more. This came across as a young adult style fantasy, with sprinkles of romance and action.
The book lost stars for me as I felt that some things/conversations were rushed or cut short in order to keep the book moving forward. Due to this I also feel as through the book jumped to different scenes fairly quickly without the journey of getting there. This by no means takes away from the plot and still gives an enjoyable read! It was quick, light and easy to digest and I do need to know what happens next!
So I was not so patiently wait for the next instalment!! Thank You Jeanette for blessing us with your mind!!
I'm not sure where to begin...oh, wait... yes, I do. What kind of wacky substance did you put in this, Jeanette? I'm not a fantasy reader, and I LOVE my spicy books, but somehow, this book had me hooked from the very beginning. The one thing I dislike about fantasy is all the world-building (that's just me. I know it's needed), but this book isn't like that. Yes, it has world-building, but the author does it so quickly and efficiently that it didn't bore me. You will find almost every kind of fantasy character in this book, including Santa and his elves! Elizabeth is the Last Pendragon, but she knows nothing of this world because she grew up in the human world. Unfortunately, she can no longer stay in the dark when strange things begin to happen. People whom she's known her whole life are not who she believed them to be, and by the time she realizes this, she's already in the middle of a whole new world beyond the one she's known. There's loss, adventure, love, and finding one's true identity, among many other things. This is an excellent read for anyone, and I'm eagerly anticipating Book 2's release!
What a fun book! Everything that Elizabeth thought she knew about her world is challenged and turned upside down after she graduates from college. She moved home with plans to work for her grandmother's friend, not her first choice of employment, and take the time to figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life. The only problem is that fate steps in and forces a very reluctant and sheltered, Elizabeth, into her destiny. Arthurian legend plus fae, vampires, elves, sorcery, and dragons make for a mind-blowing ride for our main character. A ride that Elizabeth struggles to accept. The story takes place in modern times within multiple unique realms, weaving a unique and fun storyline. I look forward to the continuation of the story.
This was a wonderful debut book and I feel honored that the author allowed me to read her work. As an author myself, I do not rate based off “how well” something I written but how well it keeps my attention. And this book did 👏🏼 but it’s hard for me to praise this book without spoilers. So if you like training, tension, strong FMC, it’s a book worth reading. There’s dragon shifters, vampires, even elves so it’s not lacking in the fantasy side!
What I loved the most was the modern twist on King Aurthor and those vibes. And lastly….. Shane. Jeanette. If you see this. Please, please give that man a chance lol
The Last Pendragon surprised me with its mix of modern life and fantasy elements. The story follows Elizabeth, who suddenly discovers that the supernatural world is very real—and her life will never be the same.
I’ll admit, the beginning felt a little overwhelming with so much information being revealed all at once.
Along the way, Elizabeth meets Ryker. The adventure is full of surprises, and just when I thought I knew where it was heading, the book ends on a cliffhanger that makes me eager to dive into book two.
If you like romantasy with strong character relationships, plenty of surprises, and a story that blends everyday life with magic, this one is worth checking out!
I was so lucky to have been chosen to get an ARC of this book! For a debut novel I don’t think we could have asked for much more! I really enjoyed reading about Elizabeth and following along in her journey to discover her true self and watch as secrets are revealed about who she really is and what she is destined to do. This book takes us to all sorts of different realms where we meet new characters and creatures. I think the Elf realm was my favorite. This book moves at a fairly quick pace with forward progression. The mix of creatures, magic and Arthurian legends make for a fun read!!
Highly Recommend! This was such a fun and easy book to read. I found myself totally invested and reading for long periods of time without getting distracted (which I’m sad to say is a personality flaw lol)
I loved the multi-universe combination. This book is able to mix Laura Croft vibes with the author’s own take of Arthurian legend and biblical elements. The characters are extremely likable with the banter among them adding to the story’s enjoyment.
I am excited for the upcoming books in this series and look forward to following Elizabeth’s journey.
I had the privilege of reading an ARC of 'The Last Pendragon,' and it was truly amazing! This book is a perfect 10/10 for mystery, excitement, adventure, unexpected curveballs, and gripping cliffhangers. The character creation and development are top-notch, making each character feel alive and relatable. The author brilliantly crafted the storyline, drawing readers in from the first page and keeping them hooked until the very end. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Now, I eagerly await the release of Book 2 to dive back into this thrilling world!
**SPOILERS** This book was so refreshing! I loved the untraditional mix of legends, magic & supernatural elements. These themes that are typically not represented together in one story were woven together expertly to create an immersive world that leaves the reader feeling like he separate stories and mythologies we thought we knew make so much more sense now! Seriously, I never would have imagined a book with vampires, demons, the Knoghts of the round table AND SANTA?! But it works so well! I fell in love with Elizabeth and have been team Ryker all the way! I cannot wait for the rest of this series! Thank you, Jeanette, for bringing such an interesting and original story to life on the page!
This book was phenomenal. Honestly, I wasn't expecting such a captivating and original story. The magic systems, the background, details, world building, character development. This is so well written and as an author, I'm usually hard to impress. Jeanette, this is one of the few books that have kept me hooked beginning to end. You truly have a way with words, and a talent for story telling. I have to say, I thought Shane was going to be the man, but then you had to go and introduce Ryker... and I'm here for that!!! :) he is soo, soon worthy. Congratulations, again. Can't wait to see what comes next...
I’m going to start this off with I am very much a mood reader… but this book pulled me in. With the twists the author included on Arthur and the knights of the round table, this fantasy book kept me guessing. I will attempt to patiently wait for book 2. It was not a spicy book but there are hints of romance. The plot feels very thought out and moves at a great pace to keep you from wanting to put it down. There is some good character growth and can’t wait to see the FMC grow even more as the series continues.
I have never been more upset that a book was recently published in my life!! I need the second/third/fourth/as many as Ms. Queen will write IMMEDIATELY. My soul died a little when I finished reading and realized there wasn’t a second one yet.
Ms. Queen writes beautifully. The reimagining of Arthur and the Round Table amongst other fables is so well done, no notes truly. There’s a little romance and angst but that’s not the main plot point; Elizabeth is such a well rounded character, as are the other side characters. Definitely worth a read!!!!
This was an amazing story that left me wanting more especially because it leaves you in a cliffhanger. I loved the world building around this story. I was just fascinated about it. I can’t wait for the next book. I was surprised with the romance we got. To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to get any but when I came across it with the female character, I was pleasantly shocked and excited. I absolutely recommend this story to anyone that loves fantasy and a kick of romance. Tiffany Hughes did a fantastic job narrating this story all by herself.
i enjoyed this book despite the fact that the story has been done in many different ways before.... sort of... but not like this. This book has it all. fantasy but not just 1 type of fantasy, there is magic, werewolves, demons, vampires, dragons, fae it has everything. there is romance, action and adventure there is cosy vibes and even christmas vibes... this book packs a lot in... a must read. i cant wait to read the next book, which i am lucky enough to be on the ARC team for with the wings&words community 🔥🔥🔥
The Last Pendragon was packed full of Arthurian legend, fantasy, and supernatural beings of all kind. It should have felt like overkill but somehow Queen made it work.
Elizabeth's developing powers were interesting to discover, though I wish she hadn't been so insecure and naive. Like you graduated John Hopkins, you aren't stupid. If only she had actually spoken up for herself.
The whole read was fast paced and thrilling, except for the training based chapters that felt a little long-winded. It kept the tension high and intriguing. I couldn't stop reading.
Such a good book. I loved all the different supernatural elements in this story. Definitely kept you guessing on which supernatural character will come next. Liszt is such a fun character she definitely acts how I think most people would act if you found out that there is magic and vampires and dragons in the world. I loved how much she grows into herself and gains so much confidence. Well Shane is annoying and I don’t like him at all but Lizzy does for some strange reasons I can’t see. Has King Arthur and some of his lure in it and which was a fun interpretation.
I finished this in just a couple days and feel like it should get a YA label. The story of Elizabeth is definitely an interesting one and a unique take. Lied to her whole life, not knowing who/ what she was, or that mythical creatures and magic is real, only to then being thrust into the middle of that world. Complicated by the fact that that world is about to fall into a war. There was plenty of action and then a cliffhanger for the end. I’m invested enough that I need to know what happens next.
This is such a unique book based on the legend of Arthur and the Excalibur sword. The story pretty much starts and goes right into the story and events unfolding. It's pretty move along with very little slow downs which I enjoyed.
We followed Elizabeth into her journey of who she is and what is her purpose in life. Her destiny and character growth.
This book has it all history, fantasy, vampires, demons and so much more. Can not wait for the next one .
Queen has done a phenomenal job writing her debut novel, which is almost a coming-of-age story of one of King Arthur's descendants. But don't think this is just another knock-off from the original Arthurian tales. If anything, this novel takes it to a whole mystical and magical level! It includes adventure and friendships, betrayal and romance, plot twists, and a bada$$ cliffhanger ending that's worth reading Book 2! While dialogue dominated several of the chapters, it didn't take away from the riveting storyline!
Jeanette Queen is a compelling storyteller, captivating the reader from chapter one as she weaves fantasy and mystery elements. Reluctant heroine Elizabeth Madison, a recent archeology graduate, discovers she is the chosen Pendragon to fight the Demon Queen, Lilith. In just a short amount of time, she is introduced to a whole new world of magic and all the responsibilities that come with the talents she possesses.
The Last Pendragon is a fun and fresh take on Arthurian legend. Elizabeth’s journey from an ordinary life into a world of magic, danger, and destiny kept me hooked. She’s not the perfect hero—sometimes frustratingly clueless—but that makes her growth more believable and rewarding. Some parts felt a little rushed, but overall this was an exciting start to the series and left me eager to see what happens next.
