I received this ARC from Sarah L. Rose and I couldn’t wait to start reading this!… so I didn’t wait 😂
Oh my god!!! Or gods (learned from the book)😏
This story is so well written, the depth and workings of the world, the characters and the progression of the story is amazing. If you like Fourth Wing, I think you will love this book as much!
It has spice, a slow burn romance and so many intriguing plots and a major plot twist.
When is the next book coming out, because I needed it yesterday 🥺
If I have to criticize it, I could only say that I think the ending took a bit too long. A lot was pushed in and it kind of pulled some of the anxiety and pressure away because it kept on going.
Still loved it and do want to read it again! Thank you so much Sarah for giving me this opportunity and I will buy this book physically when it comes out!😍 Oh and I hope Fairyloot or Illumicrate will make a special edition out of it 😏
This book was incredible, it gripped me from start to finish.
The way the mystery unravels throughout this book is amazing, I really thought I knew what was going to happen at about 75% but the ending threw me off in the best way possible. I need the next book to come out ASAP to find out what happens, the stress the ending left me in is unreal.
The world building was beautiful, the magic system was super cool and the characters were really interesting. Liv and Nuo’s friendship reminds me of Juliette and Kenji from Shatter Me, I love their banter but also how much they cared for each other. Liv and Brekts relationship is a whole other story, the slow burn was intense but it was super refreshing for a male love interest not to try to limit or stifle the FMCS progress, Brekt wanted her to be safe but confident, he wanted her to grow into herself.
Huge credit to Sarah for this book and thank you for letting me read it early. I am super excited for the next one ❤️
This book took me on a journey of a thousand different emotions. The way in which it was written was absolutely beautiful and the level of detail painted a picture in my mind while reading. I’m a sucker for books containing prophecies/oracles and this one did not miss the mark. Usually I expect to guess what will happen in the end but I was completely blindsided by the last few chapters. The ending tied all the loose ends together and gave me that ‘ah’ moment when I finally understand what was going to happen as it was happening. I really liked this book and how it didn’t fall into the classic love story storyline, there were so many twists and turns along the way. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next and I will definitely be buying a physical copy when this book is published!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was lucky enough to be selected to receive an e-ARC for The Guardians of the Aspis and wow am I glad I was! I loved this book, the characters are fleshed out and I love their personalities and quirks. Nuo is the friend I need in my life! I really enjoyed the way the story is written, it's been a while since I had a book that I didn't want to put down, but this was one. Last night was a late one trying to read as much as I possibly could! The world building is great, easy to understand magic system, gods etc. I thought I had worked out where the storyline was going, then I was thrown a massive curve ball and I LOVED it. So thank you, I really enjoyed this and can't wait to own the physical copy as well, definitely one to read 🥰
Adventure- check. Magic- check. Humour- check. Found family- check. A delicious slow burn romance- check. PLOT TWISTS- DOUBLE CHECK.
The world building is perfection. It has so many unique landscapes that you can feel, smell and taste as you read. One of which gives me Fern Gully vibes and I was so jazzed for it.
The characters are so unique- every single one is so diverse. I can’t pick a favourite because I like them all that much. (Even the villains you love to hate).
The main female character, Liv, is such a badass who very much comes into her own and finds herself along the way and learns what she is capable of in so many ways.
But the ending. You guys, the ending is superb. And also the only con because you’ll be left with the biggest cliffhanger and have to wait for the story to continue in the next book. I am DYING to know more. I have so many questions. The ending had me on the edge of my seat with my heart racing!!
Definitely worth reading if you want an epic Romantasy to sweep you off your feet. 10/10 recommend.
I am beyond honoured that I was chosen to be an ARC reader for this wonderful story!
I liked the concept of this book but the execution lacked IMO. The writing had a childish undertone and I couldn’t connect with the FMC. The info dumping at the beginning is pretty intense. And whilst you’re getting a lot of information - the most important questions remains unanswered. There were a few plot holes and the execution of the conversations felt forced and awkward. It was going to be a 3✨ until the last 15%. It was insanely chaotic and didn’t fit with the rest.
I received an arc copy of this book from Sarah L. Rose and I couldn't be happier.
This book... I love it and hate it. I love the character, they weren't idealised, too perfect or too damaged. Olivia, the main female character, is amazing, she is like any other girl without an over trained past or anything like that. Nuo, I need this kind of friend in my life 😍
The complexity of the world-building in the book is balanced by its beautiful and clear explanations. Being a non-native English speaker, I had no difficulties in comprehending and following the storyline, which makes me appreciate the quality of the book's writing.
There is a cliffhanger at the end so be prepared, but I wasn't ready for the ending of this book. I cried, laughed, screamed and wanted to throw my kindle a couple times during reading, but the ending left me speechless.
Thank you Sarah for giving me a chance to read this book. Now I need the next one, I need to know what will happen with Guards and Liv ❤️
Thank you so much for the ARC copy, this book was amazing, kept me captivated throughout. The world and story build of this book was just chef's kiss. All the twists and turns, it was hard to determine if what I though would happen. The ending tho, gotta leave us hanging.
I loved this book! I got an ARC copy of it, and I could not put it down! You’re hooked from the start! Thank gods there’s no heavy info-dumping in the start like a lot of other fantasy books - but the world building is consistent throughout so it’s easy to get into the story! The tension was cruel (in a good way) - I needed to keep reading because I wanted more of it. The epic plot twist I did NOT see coming!!! For a long time I thought I knew what was coming, but noooo… So - Sarah, I need the next one.. please?
Ever since I read the first words from this book it was clear to me that’s going to be something I would definitely binge reading. It caught my attention right away!
This books it literally made me going into every mood possible: I was happy, hopeful, sad, intrigued, I was questioning myself and them, I hated, I waited and then my mind was blown away.
The Guardians of the Aspis it’s a stranger to lovers romance fantasy, with the spice level being very satisfying 🤭. A shattering love story, many mysteries and friendships that could go beyond hate and betrayal.
A lots of thanks to the author, Sarah, for writing this beautiful debut novel and sharing with me this book! ❤️
I cannot say enough how awesome this book is!! I honestly haven't read a book so slowly in a long time, but not caused was terrible but because I didn't want it to end. The world building was phenomenal and you just fall in love with the characters. And oh the twists! I did not see that ending coming.
This book kept me on my toes the whole way through and the cliffhanger ending left me needing more! This book has found family, an FMC that is appropriately aged, and side characters that are fully developed and relatable. It has romance as well as epic friendships, this book is a must read for fantasy lovers!
“Beautiful is too gentle a word for you.” “What word do I get then?” “Devastating.”
Sarah kindly sent me the ARC of Guardians of the Aspis however this review is my honest opinion.
Firstly I loved the worlds and cultures created in this book. So many of the laws, regulations prejudices and hierarchies echoed our own societies and histories. The strong theme of a certain bloodline from a certain god being “better”, “elite” and more “worthy” being higher in power over “lesser” bloodlines I felt really harkened to the dark history surrounding the holocaust and in general the race divide in reality. This for me really cemented an aspect of reality and tangibility in what is a fantasy novel.
The character felt rounded and had developed histories that drove their actions. All choices, betrayal and loyalties of characters felt true to them.
I love that even at the end after exploring so much and seeing the new culture and knowing she was safe from the harsh retributions of her own home, Olivia was still conflicted with conforming to those societal expectations while trying to embrace the new. She didn’t lose her history while forging her new path.
Now to the juice
The slow burn of this book of the book I swear nearly killed me. The classics of one bed, one tent, wild bathing and accidental glimpses of the nude form leading to heated looks and flushed skin. I’m a sucker for the romance.
It wasn’t enemies to lovers or even really fated mates but a fated connection? I honestly was devastated with where the book ended because this one isn’t even fully published and I already can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
I honestly can’t wait to read where Sarah takes these characters and the new areas of the world we get to discover as their journeys continue. I honestly hope this is just the beginning.
The story is about Olivia who is mysteriously transported into Arde, a land very much different from her home in every way possible. Here she meets the Guardians of the Aspis and tries to fulfil her destiny of ‘Waking the Aspis’.
I’m grateful to have received an ARC after seeing Sarah’s posts on social media about her book and I couldn’t wait to get lost in the story.
The idea and concept of the story is interesting and unique but I just couldn’t get into it in the beginning and I personally found the first several chapters to be all over the place and lacked cohesion. The magic system was presented decently and I think the world building was done well. Even though I never fully connected with any of the characters until the end, especially Olivia, about halfway through the book, I started to get more invested in the story and I was eager to find out what was going to happen next. I especially liked the ending as I just did not expect that at all until it was already happening, so very well done!
I very much look forward to the next book to find out what the story has in store for our main characters.
« With him, maybe I didn’t mind being that girl. »
« I know you were asking for death when we found you. I won’t let you have it, Liv. »
I have rarely been so consumed by a book for its plot, characters, and lore all at once.
Thank you to the author for sending me an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Damn. I am hooked. I need more right now.
I was a tiny bit scared of starting this books, as it is a 600+ pages fantasy book. But man, it was worth every single page.
The lore behind this book was fascinating to learn about. Whenever Nuo would go into story times, I was so happy to learn more. You know an author did a great job when you’re paying such attention to the history and not skimming through those paragraphs.
The characters? I love every single one. Well, debatable knowing the ending. But still. Nuo is my baby. He feels like a golden retriever best friend, but he has so much depth. Each character has such a real story that built their character and actively influenced the way they act and their personality now. Kazhi? Badass. She scares me, in a good way. And Brekt? What more could I say other than he is now on my book boyfriend list.
And that slow-burn romance? Baby I am crispy. IT BURNED ME FROM THE INSIDE OUT. The tension, the steam we got. Ugh. If I don’t get more in the second book. I don’t know how I’ll survive. I need more to thrive, I had just enough to survive, but like our little crew, I need to thrive, so miss Sarah L. Rose, please feed us.
I can’t wait for this book to get the recognition it deserves. As a debut novel, it is powerful in all aspects.
Thank you so much Sarah for an arc of this book, I throughly enjoyed this book.
The book starts out with the main character Olivia who lives in an isolated village in the woods where it’s citizens are strictly monitored by people called the law keepers. It feels almost dystopian for the first few chapters citizens are have held to strict laws and if those laws are broken the keepers will take you to prison. Olivia felt like she never fit in, she couldn’t conform to the strict rules citizens needed to abide by and the beginning of the book starts out with her running through the woods from the keeper’s. Her escape attempt leads to her breaking her ankle and she decides that death is a better option than prison.
As she succumbs to her injuries, a bright light with many voices tells her “Wake the Aspis.”
A group of four strangers covered in strange markings and piercings finds her nearly dead frost bitten body in a cave. Olivia believes she is in the afterlife but in reality she has been transported to a land called Arde. Upon being healed by these four strangers she realizes she is no longer in her small world. There are no law keepers and is no longer bound by strict rules. She suddenly can speak and understand a language that was unknown to her before and learns these strangers are Guardians of the Aspsis and are on a quest to wake it and battle along side it to defeat the evil known as the Ikhor.
This epic fantasy romance book is full of secrets and deception. If you like books with quests, forbidden love, and betrayal this book will be a great read for you.
What a fantastic fantasy book. It is so well written, the characters are so richly developed, and the storyline... Sooo good! I loved this book so much.
I seriously fell in love with both Brekt and Nuo. Brekt is that hot guy you just burn for, and Nuo is such a fun multilayered guy, you just want him so badly to be your friend. Liv was a well developed FMC, and Kahzi was such a mystery, you spend the whole book trying to figure her out.
There were some good plot twists, and it leaves you guessing until the end as to what is really going on. This book was long, too. But in this case, I was glad because I did not want it to end. I’m sad now that it has ended. Need book 2 asap, Sarah! Please!
If you’re looking for a great captivating fantasy book, a slow burn romance with a small amount of spice, great character development, great world building and just an outstanding storyline, this is the book for you! A total 5 star read for me.
I received an advance reader copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Liv is from a town where there are many rules and the Keepers will do anything to silence the citizens. When she runs away one night, on the verge of death she is saved by a light - giving her the task of “waking the aspis”. She doesn’t know what that means but she finds herself saved by a group of warriors called the Guardians. She learns their history of gods and war, what everything means, and on this journey they go to fulfill the mission that has fallen into Livs hands.
The slow burn was realllll and even though it didn’t start to pick up until about 65% of the way ooo it was good. I loved all these characters. The banter was top notch and I was tearing up throughout the book hearing about everyone’s upbringings and challenges they have faced through life. The journey through this new land and all the small hints dropped at the ending were … wow. This book really brought out all the emotions and I was not at all expecting the ending. This book now has me in a chokehold and I will accept nothing less than a sequel and two other books from the views of Nuo and Kazhi.
This was a phenomenal read. The vibes were vibing and I was eating. it. up. I purchased this book for my kindle on a SYK day and I’m so glad I took a chance and actually read it.
This book follows Liv, who was born in a world with no magic & strict laws with keepers enforcing whatever laws they wanted. On the brink of death, Liv is found by none other than a group of guardians from a seemingly completely different world than where she came from. This found family is full of secrets, masks, and lies. The main male character, Brekt, is a very broody shadow daddy, unlike many other stories, his reactions feel real & most of the time warranted. The side characters are both funny & intriguing leaving you wanting to know so much more. Will Liv uncover the truth before it’s too late? Will the Aspis wake in time to defeat evil? The plot twists were next level and I never saw them coming. This book was fun, spicy, twisty, and unique.
I would most definitely recommend this book for all the romantasy readers out there! I cannot wait for book 2 whenever it releases!
Gods ✅ Betrayal ✅ Mythical creatures ✅ A Subjugated and controlled by society FMC ✅ Found family ✅ Spice 🌶️🌶️ yes! Oracles and prophecies ✅✅
This book was so captivating and I was lucky enough to be provided an ARC of it to read. This story follows Olivia or Liv who is pulled into a world when she flees her society and is at the edge of death. It does also have a second POV but it is used sparingly.
Liv is rescued from near death and hears a voice saying to wake the Aspis. The Aspis is prophesied to rise every 1000 years or so to do battle with the Ikhor a great evil of the land. This is because the Ikhor stole the power of the gods and the Aspis was created to battle it until that power is returned.
Olivia then meets a group with Brekt, Nuo, Kazhi and Bastane. They decide to keep her as they believe she can help to wake the Aspis.
The story was so well written, the characters fleshed out and may I say I have have such a visceral hatred of one of the characters I both love and despise that the author has done this to me.
The spice is certainly slow burn, with 2-3 scenes but the scene by the fireplace was done so cleverly it is up there with some of the best spice I have read.
But man if you think this book is cozy and going to go quietly you would be wrong the betrayal is something else and the best part I didn’t see most of it coming.
Then to top it off with a cliff hanger I can’t wait for book 2 and I really hope there is a special edition done because this book fricken deserves it, it is outstanding.
*I was provided an arc for my honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own*
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶🌶
Wow! This was one hell of a ride! I think I felt every possible emotion whilst reading this. I thought I had the plot figured out, but I was totally blindsided by the ending. This book had secrets, twists, unexpected turns, and cryptic oracles. And I loved it! It was all wrapped up nicely by the end. There are unanswered questions, but no loose threads.
The burn was super slow, thus making the satisfaction all the greater when some progress finally happened. The relationship and dynamics between Liv and Brekt had me pulling my hair with frustration at times, but everything made so much more sense after finishing the book.
The world building and magic system was very interesting. In certain parts, there was a lot of information being given. The writing was beautiful. The descriptions and attention to detail made it easy to get lost in my head, picturing the scenes whilst reading.
I did wish that Brekt's pov chapters were written in 1st person to match Liv's. But that's my personal preference, and did not impact the story.
I can't wait to read the next book in this seires and see where this is going! Thank you Sarah, for letting me be a part of your team.
Massive Thankyou to the author for sending me the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am in a massive fantasy rut at the moment so please bare this in mind when reading this spoiler free review.
Immediately you are thrown into the story, leaving you full of wonder and mystery. As the story progresses the mystery surrounding the events are explained however, at the start you are left a little confused but it’s part of the fun right?
The story is slowburn so you do have to read a bit before it gets going but the moment it does …. IT DOES GET GOING. I was obsessed from that point wanting to know more about the characters, the world and the plot
Ignoring my rut it’s sitting firmly at 4 stars. If I was to listen to my fantasy rut it would be 3.5 but that would be biased of me and unfair to the amazing book
This was definitely a "just one more chapter" book. When I tell you I went through all the feels reading this, I mean ALL the feels. The way Arde was described along with the unique magic system, had me hooked from the beginning. Sarah created some of the most vivid scenes with her words and had you feeling you were right there with Liv on her journey. It starts off a little slow but starts getting really good about halfway into the book. The banter between the characters was great but the slow burn between Liv & Brekt was even better. Just when you thought you had it all figured out, BAM! You don't. So many twists and turns. The ending will have you begging for the next book to hurry up and get here.
Well what to say. Absolutely lost my whole self in this. Just had everything I like in fantasy. The camaraderie, the bickering, the friends/family. The adventure & that story. Can’t praise this enough to be honest. Liv & Brekt, all the guards with them. Great characters and I honestly had no idea where this was going. Just loved it. Please do more Sarah L Rose
The writing? Beautiful. Every single time I thought I had figured out what was going to happen next, I was wrong. Unbelievably wrong. The ending absolutely blind sided me and I need more.
Crossing my fingers fairy loot does a special edition!
