Can a curse save Theryn's family...or will it doom them?

Princess Theryn's sixteenth birthday is here, and with it, the looming curse that threatens to cast her entire castle into a century-long enchanted sleep. But what her court doesn't know is that the young princess is determined to trigger the curse herself--and whisk her parents away from the meddling nobles intent on splitting the king and queen apart.

Theryn is certain that her family can make a fresh start when they wake up one hundred years into the future. But what she doesn't know is that curses often carry dark secrets behind their casting...and even a century isn't far enough to run from them.

I'm writing this review in honour of Beksy-chan's birthday, even though I'm the one getting the birthday present because she's given me a copy on top of having written so many fairy tale retellings for me (Yeah, I know they're not technically for me, but let me be delulu about this one thing, all right?)

The Spindle Trap is a funny and feel-good mashup of Sleeping Beauty and "The Parent Trap," a film I've not watched but know enough about to see the veneer of inspiration drawn from it for this short story's plot. In this, Princess Theryn finds out her parents, the King and the Queen, are going to divorce and, unable to accept the break up, devises a plan with her maid to trigger the century-long sleeping curse by deliberately pinching her finger on a spindle, convinced that, after such a long rest, her parents will forget about their divorce plans and everything will be back to normal. She's aware that there's a way to break the curse through a prince's kiss, and her red-cheeked musings and preparations for it are amusing.

Everything goes as Theryn planned. But on awakening, a very major surprise awaits her that has consequences she had tried to avoid at any cost. What was it? If you watched the film, you probably know, or can guess. There's a bit of sadness by the end, though also hopefulness, that balances the hilarity a bit.

That's really it. A simple, clean, sweet, and uncomplicated story. Ideal for reading in-between heavier books, or if you simply need a laugh. Or a palate cleanser.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

In a Nutshell: A short story with a different take on 'Sleeping Beauty'. I liked the concept, but I wanted a bit more from the execution. This might have worked better as a novella because it certainly had the potential.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Princess Theryn knows that on her sixteenth birthday, she, along with everyone else in her palace, is cursed to sleep for a hundred years when she pricks her finger on a spindle. But instead of running away from spindles, Theryn plans to get pricked and be cursed. Her parents are on the verge of estrangement, thanks to the meddling palace ministers. So if Theryn can get her parents to sleep for a century, the nobles will be long dead by the time they wake up. Sounds like a good plan, right? But as we all know, no plan is foolproof.
The story comes to us in Theryn’s third-person perspective.
I had loved this author’s short story collection, ‘Unexpected Encounters of a Draconic Kind and Other Stories’. So when her new short story promised to be a mash-up of ‘The Parent Trap’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’, my curiosity was immediately piqued. The result was a slightly mixed bag for me.
The concept of the story is great. It challenges many assumptions typically made in fairy tales. I enjoyed the notion of “Sleeping Beauty” willingly going to her sleep, even if her plan is somewhat misguided. I also liked her naiveté of assuming that she could save a marriage just by getting meddlesome people out of the equation. Theryn is a typical young adult who believes that she can set anything right with her actions, and like most young adults, she bases her plan on incomplete information and short-term thinking. At the same time, she is also brave and ready even for something extreme measures if it means keeping her family together. The portrayal of her teen personality is accurate.
The story does a great job in depicting how particular Theryn was about the “after”. Making arrangements to ensure that whoever wakes her up after a century with a kiss is suitable and respectful – very practical indeed! I loved the depiction of the prince – you won’t easily find a royal character like him in classic fairy tales.
Of the other characters, Hylda, Theryn’s maid, is awesome. She is the only character whose personality shines well in this little story. I would have loved to know more about Theryn’s parents but the little we get of the King and Queen is not enough to understand their behaviour completely. I would have loved their characters to be more fleshed out. A part of the issue here is that the story comes in Theryn’s limited perspective. So we know only what she herself knows and lets us know.
The story delivers fairly well as a reworked version of the classic fairy tale. However, the author’s dedication mentions the 1998 movie ‘The Parent Trap’ as having helped inspired this story, which was anyway pitched to me as a mashup of Sleeping Beauty and this movie. But this claim set me on the wrong track as the elements from the 1998 movie were barely visible. This isn’t exactly the author’s fault but mine. To me (or at least, to the “me” that watched the movie eons ago), ‘The Parent Trap’ isn’t a story of divorce but a story of twin girls who swap places to be with the other parent. So I admit, I spent half this story waiting for the non-existent twin to pop up and for some mistaken-identity shenanigans. Whoops!
The ending is the main reason for my low rating. Unlike typical fairy tales or movies, it doesn’t end with a ‘happily ever after’ but with a somewhat bittersweet, ‘let’s do the best we can in this situation’ approach. This ending would have far better suited ‘The Parent Trap’, but it chose to go the typical Hollywood way – annoyingly farfetched and absurdly picture-perfect! To be clear, the ending of this story is realistic. But such an incomplete yet hopeful finale would have been fine had the story not been a YA fairy tale retelling. A happier ending is what the heart wants in this genre and for this age group. Even if I accept the present version, it still has things left unsaid and threads left untied. I would have loved a more sealed and detailed climax to the story.
Another minor complaint concerns the distant floating kingdom of Ildebar. This sounded so magical that I was disappointed to see it stay in the background of the plot. I wanted to know much more about this amazing place. Is the author planning a sequel set in Ildebar? I don’t know, but the potential is certainly there!
All in all, this is a sweet and quick story with an unusual angle to the classic fairy tale. I liked it enough, but it didn’t blow me away the way I expected it too. I am sure I would have enjoyed it better as a novella, with some more detailing to the people, the places, the circumstances, and the finale.
3 stars.
My thanks to author Beka Gremikova for providing me with a complimentary copy of “The Spindle Trap”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the story.
THE SPINDLE TRAP is a short story based on sleeping beauty wherein the cursed princess wants to enact her curse on her terms to save her family—but the results are not what she expects.
This short story fits into the author’s oeuvre well! A fairytale with unexpected twists and not the happy ending the characters want, but the kind it turns out they need. I love how the author makes me feel things in such a short timeframe, but I look forward to getting longer works from her!! I know that the interesting worldbuilding she sprinkles in could really explode in a longer work.
The story of a princess cursed to sleep a hundred years.... and decides that triggering her curse is the only way to keep her parents together.
So, a lot Sleeping Beauty and a little Parent Trap.
It's as fun as it sounds!
Plus, there's a floating fairyland. 🤩
The characters are vivid and relatable. I especially loved the princess' old nurse Hylda, who was rendered with tender strength that was lovely. The MC, Theryn, is sweet and earnest, and not as shrewd as she thinks she is. I confess to silent screaming at her to not trigger the curse, but when do characters ever listen? 😅
There were layers of detail and worldbuilding hinted at but never explored. This is mostly tantalizing rather than disappointing, but it would be nice to have a sequel (looks meaningfully at the author).
Overall, a very enjoyable quick read. I highly recommend grabbing it!
I read an ARC (really quickly, since it's a quick read and a little addictive), but all views are my own and freely given.
A fun twist on the Sleeping Beauty retelling. Short and sweet but allows for a good twist at the end. I would love to see more of the characters and see more of their backstory and get to know them more.
A quick read, with an interesting spin on the tale of Sleeping Beauty—one in which the princess purposefully enacts a 100 year curse.
Fans of fairytales retold, short stories, stubborn princesses, and chivalrous princes will enjoy The Spindle Trap.
Sleeping Beauty head over heels
Beka Gremikova turns the whole story around. Clever, resourceful Theryn is nothing like what I expected, but she gets a few surprises too.
A simple, sweet little read about a princess, a prince, some harried parents, and a quest to save not only a kingdom but also a family. A delightful little mash up of Sleeping Beauty and Parent Trap that allowed the princess and Prince to not only act their age but also have feelings beyond each other. It made me smile. I do wish there had been more. The short length left a lot of things feeling like I needed more time in the world with them.
A short and bittersweet mashup of Sleeping Beauty and The Parent Trap. It's one of those short stories you wished was longer because there's actually more to unpack than just sleeping princesses, broken curses and broken down relationships. It's a good little read for anyone who doesn't want their fairy tales to be too romanticized.
Interesting twist
I love the Parent Trap, and I definitely appreciated its influence here. It wasn't quite the happy ending I was expecting, but the prince was very sweet, and I liked how the heroine orchestrated things, and how the kiss from a stranger was handled.
Sleeping Beauty is a difficult fairy tale to retell as the main protagonist is mostly inactive throughout. The Spindle Trap delightfully turns this concept on its head as Princess Thorin resolves to make the curse come to pass in order to help prevent her parents' divorce and to prevent meddling ministers from wreaking havoc in the kingdom. However, the princess might not know the whole story. When Thirin awakens, what might be in store for her, and who is truly responsible for casting the curse in the first place?
This tender and bittersweet retelling of Sleeping Beauty is thought-provoking and makes you consider the princess's predicament in an unusual way. I enjoyed the twist during the climax as well as the exploration of the end of innocence and the resourceful princess. Prince Edvin was terrific, a wonderful and kind young man. I loved his nervousness and the gradual reveal of his kind heart.
My favorite character of all was Hilda, the maid. Her act of sacrifice, her love and her brusque manner toward the prince was so much fun. The explored theme of what truly makes a family was very well-done as was the theme of the meaning of true leadership.
Favorite Quote: All mothers want to help their children, be they bound by blood or soul.--Maid Hilda.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys bittersweet retellings of fairy tales that make you contemplate familiar stories in new ways. Also, if you are a fan of "Cinnamon Roll" princes, there is a great one here. I want more stories with these characters, or maybe even an expanded version of this tale.
Happy reading, (or listening as this story is available in an audio format). God bless you all.
I've gotten rather fond of Gremikova's fairytales. They're sweet and wholesome, and sometimes tragic, but always beautiful and heartfelt.
When she asked if I wanted an ARC for her surprise birthday release (happy birthday, by the way!), it wasn't really a question.
I read "The Spindle Trap" in one sitting, and aside from the desperate need for more stories about the floating city of Ildebar (how could you simply tease us with such beauty in the background? Let me walk around and get lost in the crowds there for at least seven hours), I'm fascinated by Gremikova's rendition.
Princess Theryn isn't just brave, she's smart. She makes sacrifices for the people she cares about. She plans and calculates.
It's not the story of a helpless victim. It's the story of a brilliant one, who uses her situation and surroundings to reach for something better, something good.
And of course, there's the hint of an adorable little romance.
Perhaps it didn't rip my heart out and make me feel in every way, but not every story has to. Some can simply be sweet, and wonderful, and beautiful.
So three cheers and a thank you to Beka Gremikova!
Content:
Language: None.
Violence: None.
Sexual: Just a kiss, nothing else.
This itty little story was I think 25-ish pages? I read it in a half an hour easy. I found the idea of it fun, and looked forward to seeing what it entailed.
This is a Sleeping Beauty/Parent Trap mix story. I found the reasoning for the curse being enacted to be unique and fun, and I loved that cute little prince and the way he woke up the Sleeping Beauty with her actual permission to be incredibly satisfying. My only complaint with it really was it was so abrupt on the ending. It killed a lot of my enjoyment. It felt unfinished. I get the decision to end it where it was, but my brain needed more notice than what I got that the story was over.
But it was cute. I'd happily try something else by the author that was longer.
This was a very quick read. It was an intriguing twist on a classic. I would love to see this expanded into a full size novel or a mini series! I want background on the prince, Theryn, her parents, and the world in general. I also want to see what happens after this story ended. Just more overall. I definitely didn’t get enough of this story!
I love the twist of this story and the surprise behind the curse. I feel invested in this story now. It hooks you from the very beginning. I was so sad when it ended.
Worth the read, and hope there’s more on this in the future.
A cute short story that works in the message of warning for working with half understandings. Lots of great world building woven in, I often find short stories can struggle to create a real world in the time they have, and Gremikova did an excellent job!
Also, I love me a cute soft male lead. I need more soft male leads.
Over all, loved it! Cute little story to read 🥰🥰
A lovely short story about family, trust, and choices. It is simultaneously relatable and escapist, and charming but sharp. I love unique fairy tale retellings and this is certainly a new favorite.
Recommended for fans of W.R. Gingell's Two Monarchies Sequence (a different take on Sleeping Beauty) and Kate Stradling's work in general.
cute
This was a fun, short story that combined Sleeping Beauty with The Parent Trap. It has an open ending, but it is well written and engaging, regardless!
