Watchful Care, volume II, authored by Paul Warden, PhD, picks up where Marianne Bankert’s award-winning first book left off. From the 1990s to 2020, Watchful Care, volume II, follows the exciting progression of the nurse anesthesia profession and illustrates that CRNAs are expert clinicians, researchers, innovators, and integral members of healthcare teams
Not as easy to get through as volume 1 but still a worthwhile read. Begins with a really fascinating survey of the history of anesthesia from ancient to modern times. This book goes into detail describing the history of American healthcare legislation as it relates to CRNA practice.
Worth reading if you’ve completed volume one by Bankert. Volume one outlines the origin stories of anesthesia delivery and nurse anesthetists while volume two summarizes those stories and focusses on the 1990s and onwards. This book continues to display the themes of advocacy, perseverance, and bravery that has advanced the profession of CRNA’s and improved access to quality care. Given the inclusion of recent barriers, advocacy, and successes, this volume is worth reading to understand where the CRNA profession is today, especially post COVID-19 which is our recent “war” compared to volume one.
