From best-selling author Holly Webb comes a brand new series full of mystery and intrigue following the adventures of a very determined heroine and her dog! Holly Webb fans will be thrilled to pieces to discover the adventures of Maisie Hitchins, the pluckiest little detective in Victorian London. Maisie Hitchins lives in her grandmother's boarding house, longing for adventure. She idolizes the famous detective, Gilbert Carrington, and follows his every case. Together with her faithful pup Eddie, she is determined to follow even the slightest scent of a mystery - no matter what! Maisie's best friend, Alice, has been convalescing at home for some time when her father sends both the girls to a country estate. But they are warned that the place is haunted, and sure enough, peculiar things start to happen on their arrival. With strange noises and smells waking the girls in the night and an unexpected sighting of a ghostly-cat form, Maisie knows it's time for her to get her magnifying glass out!
Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
Another charming entry in the series, albeit one I wish could have been longer and resulted in the removal of Miss Sidebothom, who is a pill. But she is a good way for kids to learn about class systems, especially since she's utterly useless after the staff leaves and Maisie has to take over as chief cook and bottle washer. I liked Alice's role in the story and the exploration of the old, creepy house - I just wish there was more of it!
another adventurous read from Maisie Hitchins, ini tipikal kasus rumah berhantu yg sebenernya gak berhantu, penyelidikannya seru, cuma akhirnya rada kurang konklusif, aku yakin plotnya ngarahin klo ada yg gak beres sm maidnya tp ternyata gak diungkit2 lagi, aku juga suka Maisie akhirnya berlibur sejenak dr sejibun tugas rumah, dan aku agak keliru sm pernyataanku ttg impian Maisie yg kukira cuma angan anganan di seri #1, ternyata dia sungguh sungguh mau jd detektif! woww, semangat Maisie!!
I audiobooked this to vet for my daughter and it was so cute! A mystery set in Victorian England. I haven't seen the book and illustrations yet but I'm hoping it's girly enough to entice Serene (8). An early chapter / MG that took 2 hours as an audiobook.
This is book 3 of a series. Have already ordered book 1 from the library.
It's hard not to like Maisie Hitchins and her fondness for detective work. Although the series somewhat romanticizes the lot of a working girl in the service class during the Victorian era, it also sometimes makes it quite clear that there were differences in the social classes of that time. In this, the third book in the series, Maisie accompanies her ailing friend Alice to a country estate where her father thinks the fresh air will help her recover faster. She brings along her beloved dog, Eddie, but the children must contend with an annoying governess, Miss Sidebotham who seems determined to keep them from having much fun. Rumor has it that Wisteria Lodge is haunted, and the girls are awakened by yowling and what seems to be a phantom cat. What with jewelry and glasses disappearing, terrible smells in the library, and all the noises in the night, the servants leave, and Maisie and Alice consider doing so as well. Eventually, with a little help from Eddie, Maisie figures out what's been going on. The book's resolution is simply charming, and proves once again how observant Maisie is. There are activities at the end of the story for readers to complete if they wish. Young mystery lovers will enjoy this one, partly because of Maisie's personality.
I enjoyed this one, I did. But I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two books in the Maisie Hitchin's mystery series. In the third mystery, Maisie meets a new friend, Alice. Alice takes French lessons from someone who boards with Maisie's grandmother. Alice has been sick and missed a few lessons, Maisie, curious as ever, goes to visit her. This will be their first time to actually talk freely and for any length of time. Some in Alice's household take a liking to Maisie, others not so much. Her father invites Maisie, whom he has just met, and whom his daughter has just met, to accompany his daughter to the country. The two girls will be accompanied by the governess. Things could go smoothly, or, not so smoothly for everyone...but with a title like CASE OF THE PHANTOM CAT...one can guess that trouble and danger are on the way...
Alice and Maisie do indeed find an adventure at the rented country house. But it isn't necessarily a dangerous one. Maisie will solve the mystery of the spooky sounds, the white "phantom" cat, and the HORRIBLE smell in the library...
If you're already hooked to the series, this one is worth your time. If you haven't met Maisie yet, this isn't the best introduction.
I read these Maisie Hitchins books to my daughter (3) and she absolutely loves them. They aren't overly long and manage to pack plenty of adventure into a little novel. This one wasn't as good as the previous 2 in my opinion but still a really good read and I shall continued reading these as bedtimestories.
Maisie Hitchins is back to solve her third case in this mystery set in a creepy haunted mansion. Maisie and her friend Alice journey to the country to help Alice recover from an illness. At first the girls are excited but then spooky things start to happen - wails in the night, a spectral cat, items going missing! It's up to Maisie to solve to mystery and save the day. Recommended for ages 8-10.
So cute !
Maisie gets to go with her friend Alice to a rental house in the country, which is rumored to be haunted. There are a handful of minor mysteries to be solved but nothing criminal like in the previous two books. It's sweet as ever but I was a little disappointed by the mysteries.
