The Key to Deep Change: Experiencing Spiritual Transformation by Facing Unfinished Business

Rate this book
Do you feel stuck on your faith journey? Do you wonder why you cannot seem to get past certain behaviors that stunt your life? Are you in the habit of camouflaging the real you from your friends at church because you know what they will think—and you think it too! Do you wish the promises you have heard about God and you were real instead of slogans? Let me tell you here and now they are and there is hope for you.

Everyone has unfinished business. No matter how long people live or how mature they become in their faith, there are still unresolved emotional, mental and spiritual issues inside. Some unfinished business is ancient and its origin is forgotten. Recent unfinished business may have come into the picture and added layers to stuff already there. Author Steve Smith guides people towards a pathway that allows them to identify the blows to their soul and the choices they made in response that have caused them to remain stuck on their faith journey to being transformed into the likeness of Jesus.

By learning the relationship between the hurt of your heart and sin in me choices, you will begin to discover that you or others have been trying to fix what is wrong in you with the wrong tools. You will be shown how to pursue deeper intimacy with God in a relationship where you will experience Him freeing you progressively from what you cannot free yourself.

Many Christian counseling books come at spiritual problems from either a sin viewpoint or a soul wound viewpoint. Dr. Steve Smith sees these two issues as interconnected and uses a biblical approach to thinking about and dealing with these issues. Although he teaches spiritual intimacy with God, Steve does not style himself as a mystic. He’s a biblical “nuts and bolts” kind of guy. His conversational, down-to-earth style of speaking and writing makes his concepts accessible to anyone no matter their level of education or experience. He also speaks and writes candidly about his own transformational journey. For those Christians familiar with the transformation process in their own lives, he gives a language by which to explain that experience for the benefit of others.

Steve Smith has been teaching, counseling and training people about their unfinished business for twenty years. He has been a pastor, church planter, mentor to pastors and a regional leader with Converge Worldwide in helping establish healthy churches that guide people in dealing with their inside stuff. He leads Unfinished Business Seminars for churches and has developed materials for small groups. In The Key to Deep Experiencing Spiritual Transformation by Facing Unfinished Business, he speaks candidly out of his own transformational experience with God to help others who are stuck in their faith journey.

Steve currently works with Converge Worldwide as a regional leader encompassing a variety of cultures in the Southeast United States. He teaches Unfinished Business seminars and consults with churches in Healthy Church Systems. Much of his time is spent in mentoring pastors and young Christian leaders and guiding churches toward health, as well as networking evangelical groups and movements across the spectrum of church cultures to work together toward planting multiplying churches.

He has been married to his wife, Shirley, for 38 years and has four children, three grandchildren, and a Shitzu dog. His personal interests include travel, history, movies and Sudoku.

I have a choice in how I respond to my pain. Christ will heal me when I run to him and not things of the world. Besides the Bible, I have found the most healing from this book!

Rather than living with problems in our lives caused by past hurts, we can find healing in Christ and live life more abundantly. Though believers know this is true, we often don't know how to find healing in Christ and how to live life more abundantly. In The Key to Deep Change, Mr. Smith shows us how to do just that.

Though this book starts off slowly, building to his main point a bit repetitively, the second half of the book really gets to the heart of the issues we all face in varying degrees. With loads of practical tips and suggestions, we are given all of the tools necessary to begin our journey toward healing. Still, we must ask ourselves, as Mr. Smith does, Am I ready to be healed? Do I really want to be healed? We might be surprised to find that we enjoy the fruit of our hurts more than the discomfort we will face as we journey to healing.

This book can lead you to Christ, who will transform your hurt and your life, if you choose to step out in faith and allow God to work inside of you. May we all take that step of faith!
