Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. Sometimes Batman is best when he is dark and gritty and street level. Sometimes Batman is best when he is goofy and grandiose and cheesy. This deluxe volume collecting the entire series is the latter, and it is fun! Snyder crafts three main arcs with a rotation of amazing artist talent. In the first, Batman is on the run against a huge variety of his rogues' gallery on a "unlikely paired-up buddies" style adventure. JR JR's art does not disappoint in that classic JR JR way. (IFYKYK) In the second, separate artists contribute to a zany, frenetic stop-the-plague in time adventure that highlights some classic Batman villains. The third sees solid Albuquerque artwork and a familial love story between Alfred and Bruce. All said, it's comics fun. The stories don't make a ton of sense, and their ties to continuity are tenuous at best. However, if you want to see the gadget-wielding, honorable, no kill Batman in action against a ton of classic villains, this is it! The two back-up arcs are also collected. They are okay. The Shalvey-Francavilla art pairing on "The Cursed Wheel" was very stunning and a nice break from the broody Batman that sometimes is too much en vogue. The second back-up arc didn't interest me at all. Russian mob-stuff gets old and was better done in the Hawkeye solo by Fraction/Aja at Marvel. In the end, this is a fast, fun, read. But, it is also inconsequential and removed from other Rebirth titles. I'm sad the series didn't get a chance for a few more arcs, but this is a good, self-contained series for the casual reader!
Fantastic art--the coloring in the first arc is especially gorgeous and creative. The Two-Face arc is really entertaining and fun, with lots of villains showing up throughout the journey. The other arcs are definitely not as interesting--they have weaker stories, and one arc just ends without a resolution...
There are some cool extras at the end: an ink version of "My Own Worst Enemy: Part 1"; a 1st draft script, which is fun to go through and see the notes about how the pages will be set up; a bunch of variant covers; and page setups and sketches.
Hmmmmm. There's five total stories here - three full arcs and two smaller arcs. I thought the first one, "My Own Worst Enemy", was incredibly fun and vibrant, and that story on its own is worth a solid 4 stars. The rest of All-star Batman was full of a lot of hit-or-miss elements, for me, but I really liked how balls to the wall weird and large scale all the stories were. It's Snyder having fun and doing blockbuster genre jumping Batman. Pretty cool.
This was an entertaining read. There are 3 story arcs, with the first being the weakest imo, primarily because of the phoned-in Romita Jr art (I love his classic work on titles like Spider-Man and Daredevil, but his DC stuff is just not for me). The other 2 arcs and the 2 backup stories were all fun and engaging.
A nice little collection of Rebirth Batman stories that all loosely connect to one another within the same time frame. Each story enjoyable on their own. Spoilers, but the top stories for myself were the Two Face story of course, The First Ally, and then Killers-in-Law as a top 3. The rest were okay and weren’t bad by any means. A nice read for any Batman fan.

I love Batman. My fav of all time. The fact that I wasn’t even able to finish this pile of garbage is telling. I now completely understand why Snyder gets all of the hate that he does, he absolutely deserves it. His run on the new 52 Batman was entirely carried by Capullo’s art. This dude is a hack, a squeeze-by parasite which is given more opportunities than he deserves. Anything he touches, he turns to mush. Everything he leaves behind with the exception of “The Court of Owls” is for the brain dead. I’m returning “All Star Batman” back to Amazon and happily getting a full or even partial return. I don’t want this garbage staining my bookshelf.
