The kingdom of Mikor has been at war with its neighbor, Colchara, for over forty years. Dahl Shelby is the king's nephew, but he has never lived the comfortable life of a prince. Born out of wedlock to the king's philandering brother, Dahl grew up despised by his uncle, who never made any secret of his distaste for his illegitimate nephew. Dahl has served at the front lines in the brutal war for eight years. But on a trip home one winter, Dahl meets Evan Tark, a handsome accountant only recently employed at the royal palace. Dahl falls deeply in love with the young man and his passion leads him to question the legitimacy of a war that has become a way of life. But his quest to bring an end to the conflict puts him in direct opposition to the king, who might be willing to kill to ensure that the war continues.
This is a classic fantasy set in a alternate universe in a sort of middle age. There is no magic or supernatural creatures, but I still think it fits into the fantasy genre because of the of the overall feeling of the story and the character types: the brave and noble general, the sneaky Chamberlain, the evil king, the naive main character, etc. I really liked it, though I was annoyed a couple of times about how some situations were resolved only through an inspired speech. I found it a bit unrealistic (even for a fantasy) to manage to end a war or fix up a horrible break between a child and his parents only through some nice words. There are usually deep beliefs behind each of these situations and people don't change their minds so enthusiastically. If there was some grudging acceptance I could have believed it, but the 180 degree change is too much. That being said I love this author! The world and character building is great and there is a lot of action. I found it one of those books that keep you up into the night :)
This author has never disappointed me since I found her.
This tale is about intrigue and murder, politics and backstabbing, friends and family, greed and corruption, and a very healthy dose of love and passion. This story has it all.
The details are well done and it was easy to fall into this world.
The cast are engaging, whether its with respect, love or hate. I felt quite deeply for all involved. Our out right heroes Lord Shelby and Evan stole my breath away many times. They were a true couple in love and often had me sighing in pleasure.
But there was another couple that run a close second in this story. Lord Alonzo and his almost sidekick Joss. What a great combination they made.
Overall a great read for those looking to be taken on an incredible journey.
First two chapters and they're already professing undying love to each other. After knowing each other for what, 2-3 weeks?DNF at this point, maybe to continue in the future, today I'd rather read something with a bit slower pace.
