Carol Drinkwater's Olive Farm Series is a guilty pleasure. The writing is often overwrought and she creates a lot of stress and drama where little should exist...but for all of that, she entertains me (us, meaning husband and me.) She deeply loves the Cote d'Azur and that makes her a likable spirit. She's creative and trying to create a certain lifestyle for herself which is probably just a little beyond her actor/writer means. But she works tirelessly at farming, writing, acting, speaking, public appearances, her air b & b and at all the idyllic things she wants for herself, her husband, their family and friends. She appeals to me as an eccentric I'd like to know and be friends with.
The Olive Farm series is her memoirs of their purchase of Apassionata, their stucco house over looking the Mediterranean on the outskirts of Cannes. She battles forest fires, wild boars, olive flies, drunken contractors, nasty neighbors with vicious dogs, and life altering car wrecks. I don't specifically recall what dramas befall her in the Return to the Olive Farm but undoubtedly some.
Mixed in are golden moments of swimming naked in her cold pool, or sipping local wine with dear friends on the terrace, eating bread with their own perfect olive oil. In all, she leaves you dreaming of your own piece of Meditteranean paradise and the toils of harvesting your own 500-year old trees.
Carol, if you are reading this, thank you for the memoires, and especially for your enlightening and brave travels around the Meditteranean in search of answers about the future of olive cultivation. It was a fascinating romp and we miss your stories. Hats off to you.
I found this series of memoir's absolutely amazing. Carol Drinkwater, the author, has a way of describing everything in life in an almost magical way. Her words, descriptions etc are so good that I sometimes found myself reading a paragraph over a couple of times to get the full flavor. I'm presently on the last book in the series, "Return to the Olive Farm". I give the series a five star only because it's the highest allowed. Enjoy!
