Ted Reese really succeeded in taking socialism out of the shadow of the last two centuries with this book! Often, in Marxist/socialist/communist debate, it is blatantly obvious that the theories and talking points feel very dated and stuck in talking points from Marx’s time, the Victorian age. Ted Reese draws an effective and beautiful picture of what it means to be a socialist in the 21st century, with AI, automation and other new technologies and how these technologies are used to make our lives in the current system worse and more stressful, while they should be a net positive. These positive aspects are held captive by the capitalist, and Ted Reese logically argues that these technologies should not be used in a manner which makes people fear them, but should be used to lower workload, create abundant material wealth for all and allow the flourishing of human potential.

This book does not shy away from taling about a vast array of topics, and that is what makes it a good draft manifesto for another’s to use, you could highlight certain parts while maybe leaving out others, there’s room for personal preferences.

I also recommend that people actually read the footnotes from at least the first parts since they’re very important for grasping the theoretical Marxist framework which Ted Reese uses.

Overall, this book has changed the way I view socialism in this new age of technological advancement. Ted Reese paints a beautiful picture of the tasks of future socialism. A picture which makes me jealous of the generations to come who get to see this blossoming of freedom and human potential.
