Nix Murguia is a dark contemporary romance author. She resides in Boise, Idaho with her husband and three sons. As a young Chicana growing up in the 90s her grandfather introduced her to various movies that would help her connect with her culture and embrace her identity. It was in the 1987 movie La Bamba that Nix realized the bad boy was much more attractive. The Bobs, the Miklos, and Chuchos. Her love for the anti-hero, morally grey alpha male bled into the books she read. She uses her love for story telling and writing to create diverse characters that Latina women can relate to and love. Morally grey men that say “Mija.” And “Te quiero.” And the strong women who would be their only weakness.
I draw the line at feet fetishes, I understand that some of the content of this book was good but the feet thing and some of the dialogue just wasn’t for my personal liking.
I’ll read the next book because I’m a chismosa at heart
Nix!!! You blew me away, Eres tan talentosa, no puedo esperar para seguir tu viaje! <3 Readers, If you're like me and you love it dark, hot, heavy, with an MMC who does not give up, and with characters you'll love please pick this debut release up. It is dark so check the author's provided CW/TW before diving in. As always if I see a Chicana author or Latinx author/romance y'all know I will run to it and support however I can! <3
Are you ready top learn the Consuelo family secrets, or perhaps the secrets that keep them up at night?
Adrian is delicious and gives us Rio/Spooky vibes for those who may be more familiar with those shows - he does NOT disappoint. Mireye Torres however is an FMC many of us will relate to with a spica and fire that cannot be smothered even in the worst and most toxic conditions. But that's what you get for playing with danger.
"I am too ruthless, too raw, and too broken to let her be happy without me. I am the worst thing for her, but I don't care. She was always supposed to be mine."
I wish I could say more because If I could I would word v0mit the whole plot - I AM OBSESSED and I will make a full blog post as soon as the stars allow me a moment to myself haha
El's Personal Scales Characters: 5/5 Plot: 5/5 Spice: 3.5 on the El scale but with the context and pairing in this book it's easily at least a 4 for spice! Overall: 5 STARS - GET ON MY SHELF #SIGNEDCOPIESWHEN!? <3

Who doesn't love Rio from Good Girls? Well Adrian is the MMC that absolutely gives those vibes! Filled with suspense, romance and spice, this read took me on a rollercoaster, but in the best kind of way! I fell in love with Mireya (love this name!), her curves, her overall good girl vibe and the banter with her and the other characters, and also felt relatable.

Tropes: 🌹 Mafia / Cartel Romance 💀 Possessive MMC 🌹 Touch Her and Die 💀 Hand Necklaces 🌹 Emotional Scars 💀 Good girl 🌹 Tragic Past 💀 HEA
Wow, what a rollercoaster! This book pleasantly surprised me. I haven't read a mafia romance in a while and this book brought the suspense, the romance, the action, the mystery and the spiiiiice.
Things I Liked: I liked the complexity of the multiple cartel / mafia groups involved in this story and loved the Latin X representation! Also the side characters were so fun - I need a book for Thalia and Alma RIGHT NOW. Thalia was such a badass and Alma definitely has a story to tell. I also LOVE a tortured soul / tragic past romance, it tends to make their development as a couple that much more tender and suspenseful.
"I'm not afraid of your darkness"
The spice in this book 😩😫 was TOP TIER, and definitely bumped my rating a bit higher. Adrian is the perfect possessive (but still supportive of the FMCs goals) MMC "I'm thinking this dress is too tight and I'm going to have to kill every man looking at you." OOOP ok I'm sat. Not to mention grade A dirty talk and a certain feet kicking moment... "Thank you for lunch" IYKYK 🔥
Things I didn't love: The first 20% of the book was a little heavy on the info dump and had quite a few flashbacks and POVS, including from those who were not the FMC or the MMC. This made it a bit hard to follow at the beginning, but past that, the story flowed well and I was hooked!
Overall an enjoyable read!
Thank you so much @unalivepromotions and @hauntgirlnix_ for the ARC! Punished is available on KU!
Tropes 🔪 Second-chance ❤️ Possessive & protective MMC 🔪 Traumatic past & healing together ❤️ Touch her and you’re ☠️ 🔪 Found family ❤️ Cartel romance
This book was great! Like do you want Rio from Good Girls and Oscar from On My Block? Then read this book! Adrian gives you both! Adrian and Mireya both have traumatic pasts but they learn the importance of honesty and how to move past the trauma. The way Adrian has two sides to himself and only shows the soft side to Mireya 🥹 Adrian and Mireya are both better people when they are together. I loved their relationship and chemistry.
Also the side characters? Loved them! (Well most of them) I can’t wait for Thalia’s story! 🖤

Okay let’s get started into the review!!!
First of all, thank you so much for this advanced readers copy!! I absolutely devoured this book and that’s that i’m not a dark romance person but there was so much more to that!! I fell in love with the characters and I can’t wait to read each of their stories. Also first time in a long time that I devour a book this fast!
Adrian is such a badass but of course he has a heart for our girl Mireya which we love. I actually think I myself fell in love with both of them lol. I’m glad she was able to slowly start working to be the person she wants to be & fuck her mom( excuse my language).
I never been in the cartel or worked for them lol but I loved that I was still able to feel so much connection to the characters because #brownpride. Now I have also been craving grilled cheese and sopa de fideo!
This was just an overall great book. The spice was spicing 🌶️. The characters pov’s were well written and each had their own story going on yet it all blended in together smoothly. I couldn’t decide who I loved more, Thalia or Alma??? I loved Mireya’s story but those two girls, yup I need more. I loved the friendship and the way the family had such love and loyalty for each other.
Final words because I can go on forever, Nikkeya you did such a great amazing job on your debut novel. I absolutely loved every second of it. The acknowledgments made me want to cry and laugh all at once and this was just so amazing, i’m so dang proud of you & I will forever keep mentioning that. 🤎
This book caught me from the beginning and didn’t let go. I love the characters Mireya and Adrian. Mireya was curvy and feisty and I enjoyed all the banter between her and all the character her best friend Thalia and Alma and then Adrian when he came back into the picture. I love that Adrian was making her ask for what she wanted in all aspects. Some strained relationships in her life made her always push her needs aside and he wasn’t having that. I would have agree and say that Adrian definitely gives Rio vibes do the show Good Girls and I am here for it because uh yes please. This second chance romance was everything. I can’t wait for book two to get more on Thalia. I love all the family dynamic in this book and how much emphasis was placed on that. Adrian and Mireya relationship is end goal because that is exactly the relationship you want for you main characters they challenge each other and accept all parts of each other without question and I loved that. I have to admit my favorites part was when Mireya was drunk Adrian start bossing her telling her what she is and isn’t going to do I was like uh yes sir you tell her. The spicy scenes were well written. There was a trope in here that I’m not always a huge fan of but I feel like it was written well and didn’t take away from the story line. Well done I am impatiently waiting for book 2 can’t wait to see what’s next.
This whole book was a ride from start to finish! No cap there were a lot of people introduced y me perdí but I made a guide 😂 There was already plot twists happening from the beginning but nothing could’ve prepared me for the outcome of everything 👀 I loved all the references from the gansito to the drunk singing of Vicente Fernandez, this book felt like a piece of home, mi cultura 🇲🇽 Adrian’s relationship with Mireya was giving por vida vibes since the begging and I couldn’t wait to see everything okay out between them. The tension between them was so good and when the sleepwalking scene hit, my jaw dropped😅 I laughed my ass off with the dog guapo because every Mexican family has an ugly rat dog 😂 I also loved the dynamic between Mireya, Thalia and Alma , it’s giving primas 💅 Like Crystal said it’s definitely a smutty version of Rosa de Guadalupe , it gave what it needed to give ✨

Side note, all the side characters could be main characters. They’re so entertaining and so damn crazy 😂 I hope Axel gets his own book because he is something else, talk about morally pitch black he probably doesn’t even have a soul 😮💨
Six years ago Mireya thought Adrian was the love of her life. After he breaks her heart, she tries to rebuild who she is but it comes at the cost of Adrians freedom. After reuniting, will Mireya help Adrian escape the darkness or help him find it.
✨“In this life, you will need alliances, and those alliances are built from secrets. Secrets are the most powerful thing you can keep.”✨
✨”I was old enough to know fairytales didn’t exist in the hood.”✨
This was my first Cartel Romance and I devoured EVERY second of it. I’ll definitely be adding more to my TBR.
This was Nix’s debut novel and I cannot believe it honestly. The writing flowed, I fell in love with the characters, and it felt like I knew the whole family by the end of it. The storyline was sooo amazing I finished it in 2 days. Overall it was such an amazing read and I am so ready to see what the rest of the series has in store for us!
I feel that after months of not doing a review and just rating, I need to write one for this.
In reality this is a 4.5 rating.
For this being Murguia’s debut novel it is well done it just needs a little bit of skill honing.
I’m not a dark romance reader. I read and tried a couple within this genre but they were mostly “okay”.
My surprise with Murguia’s novel is with the introspection of the characters and I think that’s the reason I kept reading. This novel offers introspection, plot and spicy scenes. I’d say that: even though it was not perfectly balanced, it was still close from it. Obviously, since I’m not that much of a dark romance reader (nor read a lot of spicy books) I didn’t care about the spicy scenes (and no, I didn’t skim anything).
Another aspect I loved so much was the representation. I was not born nor raised in the US, I’m not Latino myself either but I grew up, from kindergarten to high-school, with LatAm people so a lot of the representation in this books feels so dearly and nostalgic for me. Even the telenovela aspect! My mom and I used to watch a lot of telenovelas!
Perhaps I finally found a dark romance author to read more from! Excited to read more from this author!
𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: First of all, thank you so much to Nix Murguia for allowing me to read this ARC 🖤 This book was SO FREAKING GOOD!!! I was hooked the moment I read the prologue lol I absolutely loved the characters. They had an amazing back story, and an amazing growth throughout the book Mireya was such a sweet soul. I loved her the moment she was introduced!! Adrian, was a total badass!!! But I love how soft and sweet he gets for Mireya! Their story was just perfection!
Both these characters had a very rough upbringing. Adrian having a mother who was absent a lot. Mireya had a mother that would be the cause of her self image issues. It was nice to see her find herself despite how her mother made her feel
Also, I need a book on tia Vicky and Thalia FOR SURE!! Like these Latino women were BAD ASS!!! I need more lol!!! So obviously, getting to the end of the book and seeing that Thalias book is already in the works had me SQUEALING!!
Amazing job Nix, congrats on this debut book! I can’t wait to read more about the Calavera Hotel Series
Y’ALL, THIS BOOK! I really couldn’t put it down. I picked the worst time to start it bc Friday is always a hectic day for me but then I had a graduation party this past weekend & I swear I was so annoyed 🤣 I just wanted to stay home with this book.
It follows Adrian & Mireya, seeing each other again after he was in prison for a few years. He thinks she had something to do with the reason why he was in jail & he’s intent on revenge & finding out the truth. This is a Cartel Romance, with a little bit of frenemies to lovers & second chance.
I love Adrian 🥵 he was CHEFS KISS! [(As a Mexican American girlie, I grew up in the early 2000s with the dickies & Nike Cortez style on guys (I married one) so needless to say that he’s right up my alley.)] I really enjoyed the way he bonded with his family as soon as he came home from prison. He just had good lines & had me smiling most of the time with his banter. Now Mireya, the FMC was cool. She isn’t my favorite character necessarily but I also don’t dislike her. I can’t pin point exactly why she didn’t hit for me, she was just there. Now her bff (& Adrian’s sister) Thalia, I really loved & can’t wait for her book next! 🖤 Overall I loved this book! The Mexican American representation through the entire book is just amazing & so relatable! 🫶🏻🖤
This book touches on a few triggering subjects so definitely check those CW before going in.
Why did I wait so long to read this? 😭 I love Mireya & Adrian's story 💕 I enjoyed the back story, the drama, the passion, the SETTING, the spice (esp the janitor's closet scene 🔥)the cartel themed family... I love finding a new author to obsess over! but more so, finding this author feels special. Reading about Mexican American characters and mentions of loteria, the tiger blanket, Santa Muerte, Dickies and a white tee 🫠, and other cultural things hits differently for me. Thank you Nix Murguia 🖤 And ty for making this a trilogy! Starting Trapped NOW
The chemistry between Adrian and Mireya? Absolutely electric. The spicy scenes were 🔥🔥🔥 in the best possible way! Dirty, bold, and unforgettable. But what really stuck with me was the depth of love they had for each other. It wasn’t just lust; it was loyalty, obsession, and a soul-deep connection that made every scene between them hit harder.
If you love your romance raw, dark, and steamy with characters who would burn the world down for each other. this one’s a must-read. I 100% recommend it.

My thoughts Wow this book had me interested from the start! I love when a book does that. The banter with the girls and between Adrian and Mireya is awesome and had me giggling. That spice though uhhhhweeee! It was spicin! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
This book is an absolute masterpiece. We love a mafia romance 🤤 the spice 💋chefs kiss. The funniest thing I have ever read: “Note-to self: research sandwich eating kink later.”
"Here is the plan-you are going to strip out of these wet clothes and get down on your knees like a good girl. You want to keep running your mouth? Then let me help you keep it shut."
Punished is a dark cartel romance with sexy scenes, a charismatic found family and two main characters with painful pasts that find love together.

Spice scale: from 0-5, I give it 4.

I liked this book, but it didn't impact me as much as I thought it would. Maybe I wasn't the right audience. Still, it was a fun read and good book to start off the series.
As a latina, I really enjoyed reading about latin characters and seeing references of my culture. I laughed at the Walter Mercado bit and felt seen when Alma pulled out the bottle of Tajin.
Mireya was an intriguing character. She's a kind woman that has some inner demons she struggles with. Some of things she felt, did and went through were rough. Her character felt very human. I liked Adrian. He was a sexy mmc. The dialogue when he told Mireya to take off her wet clothes had me screaming. I liked the romance between them. They didn't have much love or stability in their lives, but they were able to become family. And the spice was fire. 🔥
I think the author needs to find a bit of balance with her writing when it comes to telling about a scene and showing it. Showing vs telling. I felt being told about certain things instead of it being showed at times affected my ability to connect and bond more with characters. Another issue I had was I wasn't sure how I felt about the person helping Bryan and Diana with their schemes. Maybe that part of the plot felt too telenovela like for me.
I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Nix Murguia! ❤
"Punished by Nix Murguia: A Cartel Romance" In Nix Murguia's captivating novel, readers are drawn into a world of danger, desire, and forbidden love. Set against the backdrop of a ruthless cartel, "Punished" delves into the complexities of relationships forged in the crucible of chaos and uncertainty. The Main Characters find themselves entangled in a web of forced proximity, their fates intertwined in a dance of fate and desire. At the heart of this gripping tale is a second chance at love, a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness that surrounds them. As they navigate the treacherous waters of the cartel's world, they are forced to confront their pasts and the choices that led them to this point. There is no third act break-up here, only a raw and unfiltered exploration of the depths of human emotion. One of the most intriguing aspects of "Punished" is the concept of sexsomnia, a condition that blurs the lines between passion and unconscious desire. As the characters grapple with this unexpected twist, they are forced to confront their true selves and the desires that lurk beneath the surface. The heroine, a good girl caught in a world of darkness, is a compelling and complex character. Her journey through the shadows of the cartel's empire is a testament to her strength and resilience. As she navigates the treacherous terrain of love and betrayal, she must confront the darkest parts of herself in order to find redemption. Set against the backdrop of the Calavera Hotels, "Punished" is just the beginning of a thrilling new series. With its blend of romance, suspense, and unflinching honesty, this book is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Dive into the world of "Punished" and discover the power of love in the most unexpected of places.
What a thrilling, edge of your seat, adrenaline packed story that was! It started off slow but continued to build and build until the twisted and shockingly explosive ending. This story kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with anticipation and disturbed over what transpires quickly right before my eyes. It was one hell of a crazy rollercoaster ride.
Adrian is fierce, domineering, protective and dangerous, but oh so damn delicious!!! After being in prison, he has some demons to track down and dish out revenge they deserve – and I couldn’t wait!!!
Mireya is such a relatable character. She’s got body issues, family issues and has lost a parent. But the worst issue she has, besides her terrible track record with men, is the undying crush she has had on Adrian that only gets stronger over time. When she sees him again after many years, those deep desirous feelings have not dissipated, and she can’t get Adrian off her mind.
The banter between Mireya and Adrian is filled with intense emotional turmoil, and some insane sexual chemistry. There is some kind of force pulling these two together, even if Adrian feels unworthy of Mireya.
"I am too ruthless, too raw, and too broken to let her be happy without me. I am the worst thing for her, but I don't care. She was always supposed to be mine."
This is a well written, dark and twisted, cartel/second chance at love story. It has such amazing characters and so much action, suspense, violence, spiciness and love, that I couldn’t get enough of it.
Punished is a dark cartel romance. Mireya, with a heart of gold, thought Adrian was her forever prince. But when he pulls the rug out from under her and ends their romance, she undergoes a wild transformation that feels like a betrayal in disguise! When destiny throws them back together, she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place—fight for love or wave goodbye for good? This tale is a rollercoaster of spicy drama and jaw-dropping twists!
Adrian, Mireya's ex, is no stranger to trouble—he's an ex-con on a mission for revenge against his betrayers. Oh, and the forced proximity? Absolutely loved it! The book beautifully captures the vibrant Mexican American culture, and I found myself snorting with laughter at several moments. But it was the witty back-and-forth between Adrian and Thalia that stole the show; their banter was pure magic!

This book made my Latina heart soo happy, let’s start with saying that the chemistry that Adrian and Mireya or should I say Mariah? 🤭, was beautifully written, this was my first book by Nix Murguia and it definitely won’t be my last, I loved her style of writing and the Mexican Representation all together. Highly recommend this book but I do suggest reading trigger warnings since this is a cartel dark romance, your mental health matters most 🫶🏼
A perfect balance, that's what I would call this book. Don't get me wrong it's not all roses! As a matter of fact, it has representations of violence and other gruesome stuff, but at the same time it shows and the other side of the coin by giving us an insight into the Consuelo family dynamics. The love, nurturing and devotion are all there for the reader to enjoy.
The spice in this one is chef's kiss! Adrian and Mireya are definitely my kind of couple, they were so attuned to each other it seemed as if they were never apart. The way Adrian protected Mireya even when he felt conflicted, showcased one thing and one thing only, him and Mireya were meant to be despite the tug of war between their hearts and minds.
Regarding my girl Mireya, she carried the world on her shoulders. Furthermore, Mireya's mind was a terrible place, and man, she didn't deserve that level of pressure and negativity in her life. The only thing she ever wanted was to be enough for someone, so she was blessed to have Adrian back in her life. Mireya is depicted as a warrior who fights her insecurities and thrives the best way she can, THIS GIRL.
All in all, I am excited to pick up Thalia's book because the goth barbie 👠 definitely has some skeletons in her closet and I am all for opening the closet.
Really enjoyed this debut book by Nix Murguia. She blends Mexican culture, family bonds, cartel dangers, and burning spice into this gem of a story. Not only does she write complex characters and the ways they navigate tricky family ties, but the main MCs have to deal with real emotional and mental issues.
Mireya - I just fell in love with her. I appreciated that she was raw and had issues and tried her best to cope in the ways she knew how to. Sure, she knew her methods weren’t the best but they’d have to do the trick at the moment. It didn’t take me long to warm up to Adrian, because I’m always a sucker for the misunderstood bad boy. Even though he starts off wanting revenge against Mireya for essentially sending him to prison, that all disappears in a puff of smoke as soon as he lays eyes on her.
I can tell there are so many more stories to this world that need to be told. I think Nix is off to a great start with Punished: The dialogue is good, there plot moves nicely, the spice hits, and the characters have depth. I totally adored the female relationships Nix put around Mireya, and seeing them banter made me miss my girlfriends. Excited for book 2!
Once I started this book I couldn't stop, instant suck in. Everyone loves a good 'happily ever after'. This book is just that, but with the bumps along the way. And by bumps, I mean the bullets and bloodshed.
This book follows Mireya (FMC) and Adrian (MMC). These two were childhood sweethearts, stimming from the time that Adrian fought off Mireya's bullies. As time goes on, people get involved and put thoughts in Adrians mind that makes him pull away from Mireya. These thoughts end up following him up to the present day of 'not being good enough'. Adrian is not the flower type of man, and he feels that Mireya deserves that. But even he gets told that 'flowers die', what good are flowers over love?
A second chance at love? Yes it is!
Mireya leaves to get away from her mother, and the guilt of getting Adrian locked up. She grows up into a glow up. Yes. I loved that. I absolutely loved that she gains her confidence as the book goes on. Adrian gets out and runs back into Mireya, and he wants to punish her for doing him wrong. But he ends up deliciously punishing her for all the right reasons.
I cannot wait for the second installment to this series.
This Book was steamy and beautiful. It had me hooked right from the Prologue. I couldn't put it down but I also had to take breaks to cool down after the spicy parts. All the character's personalities and insecurities are very relatable so you can connect with them. There was so much heart put into this book. I love the layout of the story where each chapter was from a different character's perspective. Even though each chapter was told by a different character the story continued smoothly and flowed perfectly so you were never lost. I felt everything from joy to sadness, anger, lust, suspense, and anxiety. I felt the deep love of the Consuelo family and the friends you choose to be your family when you don't come from a family of protection and love. I read so fast that by the end of the book I wanted more! I can't wait to read the rest of the books as they come out. The Author did an amazing job and the storytelling was so visual as I read that it felt like I was watching a movie in my head.

Wow….. fucking wow. Is there a Calavera hotel in Houston I can stay in? This book had me hooked from the 1ST PAGE. But I did get a little bit confused in the beginning since a lot of characters were being introduced which is perfectly fine with me but I needed to like reread a page here and there or even think hard 😆 I love how Nix wrote lot of Mexican 🇲🇽 themes, she mentioned Peso Pulma, Vicente Fernandez , and more.
This book is a Mexican/Chicano SPICY, cartel, dark romance. Freaking ADRIAN is everything my Brain 🧠 will tell me to stay away but MY HEART and body will want 😂‼️💦🔥 That’s why I love Mierya so much for him because I am her and she is me🫶🏻 She is the good smart girl that knows it’s not good for her but she DGAF. She loves her Adrian. Both of them were destined to be together. Adrian is Toxico and possessive and it’s so attractive to me. This book had me 💦💦💦💦 no kidding 💯
I can’t wait for the 2nd book coming out. But NIX hurry up 👏🏻🇲🇽❤️🔥💦🖤🫶🏻
