We promised to keep each other’s secrets. Until they found the body…

The Wife:

My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can…

The Husband:

I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper. That I’ve not always been faithful. Will they think I killed her?

I think of my wife’s jealous streak, of the lies she’s told our loved ones. But if I tell the whole truth, they’ll look into her past. And that will destroy me, too…

Two people fighting for their lives. Two people with secrets to hide. Who will you believe?

Two people are fighting for their lives after a road traffic accident - Parker Vance and his wife Luna. They both have secrets, but one of them is lying about something very serious. Who is it? You decide!

The night before the accident, Parker had told his mother, Nicola, he needed to talk to her the next day - “I have something very important to tell you. But you mustn’t tell anyone...”

Well, of course I was desperate to discover what was so important, and why did it have to be a secret between the two of them. But Nicola can’t talk to her son now because he’s literally fighting for his life.

Told from multiple perspectives, with a very divisive set of characters, this was a story that gripped and wouldn’t let go. It had the inevitable twists, and I have to say they were totally unexpected. The author has a powerful gift for keeping her audience permanently on edge. Highly recommended.

I have something very important to tell you. But you mustn’t tell anyone... 🤫

Parker has something private he wants to discuss with his mom, Nicola. But it will have to wait as he is leaving for an overnight event with his wife, Luna. But there’s a good chance this little secret may remain forever silent. Parker and Luna were involved in a serious car accident on the way back to town. Parker's fighting for his life and oddly, his wife refuses to see or talk to anyone!

Nicola, now left to look after her grandson, lets herself into Parker’s home to pick up some extra clothes and necessities. As Nicola repeats a mantra of “I will not snoop…I will not snoop…oh wait! What’s this!?😱

Now Nicola scrambles to protect her family.

I felt Nicola made for a great MC! A true mama bear that would protect her child no matter the mess they find themselves in. As for Parker and Luna, they’re hiding so many secrets that you’ll question where the truth lies, if any truth exists.

Told from multiple perspectives, all characters were clearly defined and had no trouble following along.

K.L. Slater once again delivers a captivating thriller that’ll have you guessing all the way to the last page. I’m a true fan of this author’s work and look forward to more!

The premise of this story is really interesting. I don't think I've read anything similar before. I loved the concept of multiple POVs and time jumps. They were done in a way that never felt confusing to me and made the story flow nicely.

I had my suspicions along the way and, even when some of them were proven right, the author did a good job at keeping me guessing and second-guessing until the end. There were things that I didn't see coming and that took me by surprise. What I loved the most is that everything that happens and is revealed makes sense when you look back.

The characters are well developed and distinct. I wouldn't describe them as likable, they range from annoying to pretty terrible, but I couldn't help caring and actually rooting for some of them. I'm very happy with how the story ended. It made perfect sense.

The narrator, Claire Corbett, is fantastic. Her narration is one of the reasons I was fully invested in the story from the moment I started listening to it. I loved the voices she gave different characters. And I have to say that the voice she gave the child in the story is one of the cutest I've ever heard.

Another riveting, twist-filled thriller from K.L. Slater!!! I thought I had things figured out, but I was so very wrong! Husband and Wife kept me on my toes and turning the pages! Secrets and lies are the names of the game in this book!

Married couple Parker and Luna are in the hospital after a horrible car crash. Parker's mother, Nicola is beside herself with worry. The night before, after dropping his son off at Nicola's home, Parker told her he had something to tell her in the morning. Will Nicola ever find out Parker wanted to share? Needing to gather more clothing for her grandson, who she is watching, Nicola goes to Parker and Luna's home and finds a scarf. A scarf that looks like the scarf belonging to a dead woman....

This book is told through various POV's and jumps to different timelines, but nothing is confusing as the sections are appropriately titled letting readers know who and what time is being shared. As the book progressed, I had many questions and happily kept turning the pages hoping for answers. I had my suspicions as did many characters in this book. I enjoyed the mounting suspense and tension as the book progressed.

I found this book to be well written, well thought out, perfectly paced with a shocking reveal! K.L. Slate never disappoints!

Dramatic, tense, suspenseful and well written!

While husband and wife are in hospital hoping and trying to recover from a serious car accident, the police are investigating the murder of missing young mum. Both or neither may be involved in the murder.

This psychological thriller with a bit of crime has a bit more to it than I can write in a brief summary without spoilers and it's quite juicy with a reasonably impressive twist. I enjoyed the book mostly but I also wasn't rushing back to keep reading each time that I had a spare minute.

A couple of issues for me reducing my rating to 3.5 stars were:

1. Just how repetitive this was. Too many times Nicola's (husband's mum) thought processes were drilled into us, over and over the same thing repeated to the point one time I was just hoping her POV (which had the best content) would end. If I had to read one more time how her son confided in her, trusted her, couldn't defend himself etc., then I'd lose it. My kindle notes suggest I was closer to losing it than I thought 😆.

2. This is multi POV, which I liked - characters were well developed. It also changes timelines, which also was ok for the most part - you have present day or # of weeks or months before the murder. BUT then there's also random chapters that say the time is "Friday" or "Monday" and I was like ???? 'which Friday? Are we before? Are we after? How many weeks? How many months? Where are we?!' The only redeeming point of that huge qualm is within a few paragraphs you eventually can figure out where you think the timeline is.

And oh so petty, but can you really make dough and cook homemade pizza with it immediately? Where's the resting time? - I have just learnt that yes, you can with instant yeast 😮.

I'd recommend this for an easy and twisty read but only if you are in the mood for forgiving some frustrating repetition.

PD: 3 November 2023.

This is my review of Husband And Wife.

The police show up at Natalie and Cal’s house and inform them that their son, Parker and wife Luna had been in a serious car accident and now fighting for their lives in the hospital. Parker is in an induced coma while Luna has less severe acute injuries. The couple had left their 7-year-old son, Barney with his mum and dad overnight while they attended a function.

Two people with secrets to hide. They had promised to keep each other’s secrets. …who should you believe?

Meanwhile, DI Helena Price and her assistant, DS Kane Brewster, of the Nottinghamshire Police are investigating the disappearance of 25-year-old Sarah Grayson, a social media influencer and mother of a 4-year-old girl, Millie. She had failed to return home to her mother and daughter after an evening out in the city. Sarah Grayson’s body was found in an alleyway in the city and a scarf around her neck, possibly used to strangle her was missing.

Parker is being linked to the murder. What is his involvement?

This is a well-written fast-paced novel with intense descriptions that heighten the suspense level, and give depth to the characters. The tension builds slowly with twists and turns to a satisfactory conclusion. This suspenseful thriller that kept me hooked until the very end…and an ending I didn’t see coming. A great read!

Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for my digital copy.

It’s twisty that’s for sure but:-

Repetition, repetition especially from Nicola, the husband in question’s mum

Talking of Nicola. Irritating, much?? Felt my fists clenching

Awful characters, such as wife’s mother. Jeez. Double fist clenching mode

However, great to be back in Nottingham where I was born and it’s an easy entertaining read and sometimes that’s just what you need.

I started this only yesterday. I sat listening to it. Then when I had to go do something I left my ear pods in and traveled around the house listening. Went out to fetch something and still listening.

I love KL Slaters ease in telling a thriller. It’s not necessarily an edge of your seat but I find them captivating and really enjoy them.

Entertained me so it’s a 5* from me.

“He was trapped. They both were, like two rats in a cage. Both had the capability to destroy one another, but there was a catch. If they revealed each other’s secrets…they’d end up destroying themselves, too.”

I absolutely loved the tension created by the secrets in this masterfully crafted domestic suspense! K.L. Slater spotlights the Vance family and the secrets that bind them. Once revealed, you’ll feel gobsmacked. How could they pull the wool over your eyes? How did Slater do that?

I can always count on Slater to present an ordinary family, doing ordinary things, and suddenly having to deal with the extraordinary. In this case, we have the Vance family. Nicola and Cal are like most grandparents and hope for more time with their grandson. Sounds ordinary, right?! Nicola has recently survived cancer and is lovingly supported by her husband, Cal, who continues to work as a self-employed plumber. They live an ordinary life. Their son, Parker Vance, and his wife Luna Barton-James, are also an ordinary couple hoping to carve out an evening for themselves. They drop their son off with Cal and Nicola while they head to an event in the city. Sounds ordinary, right?

That’s where ordinary ends.

Something unexpected happens that upends the Vance family and throws them all into a tailspin. As each member twirls out of control, all hell breaks loose, revealing a well-disguised network of secrets and lies. As readers try to make sense of it, Slater forges ahead examining betrayal, past wounds, the need to do the right thing, and this ordinary family’s complicated dynamics.

Nicola finds out the hard way that sometimes the quest for privacy is simply an effort to protect others. If only she hadn’t snooped around at Number 4, Orchid Close…

Although all the time-hopping irritated me at first, I realized that the story actually benefits from the way the author chose to unfold it. I was in awe of how Slater controlled the narrative, doling out the twists when they had the most impact.

I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Holy freakin’ cow was this good! I mean, I’ve read one K.L Slater book, The Liar and did NOT like it one bit. Now this thing…. I absolutely could NOT PUT IT DOWN!!! Today marks the second time I’ve ever driven and held my phone up just so I could continue reading. Yes folks, I endangered the lives of everyone else on the road just so I could keep going. I do not recommend this lol.

Saying Parker and Luna Vance have a troubled marriage isn’t the half of it. With jealousy and allegations, Luna is a mess. One night they have to attend a dance and leave their son with Parker’s parents, Nicola and Cal. As Parker is about to leave, he tells his mother he has something very important to tell her later. Only Parker and Luna end up in a terrible accident that leaves them both in the hospital.

While this is going on, Nicola finds a big piece of evidence that could lead to a woman’s unsolved murder. The evidence being at their home. Luna and Parker’s house. Suddenly she is scared of what she thinks could implicate her son and tries to hide it. Did her son kill this woman? Did Luna?

This story is all about psychological suspense! I sped through this thing as fast as I could! I highly enjoyed it and rate it 4.5 ⭐️ I’d like to thank Bookouture, K.L Slater and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

I am glad that I said "I DO!" to "Husband and Wife".

This twisty well-written domestic thriller/police procedural kept me guessing from start to finish.

BEWARE!

THIS BOOK'S TITLE IS DECEIVING:
The book is NOT a domestic drama about one husband and wife.

Instead, it's a "Who Dunnit?" thriller that painstakingly delves into the lives of three husband/wife couples in one family.

And one husband and/or wife is guilty of murder.

I listened to the audiobook read by Claire Corbett who did a superb job with the narration.

4.5 stars.

BOOM — DYNAMITE!

The British Queen of thrills, K.L. Slater, pulls out all the stops in her latest twisty, fast-paced psychological thriller, HUSBAND AND WIFE —her BEST yet! Deserving of an award for the best non-linear plot, crafted with finesse, a brilliant storytelling technique in which the narrative is told out of chronological order.

Jumping back and forth in time (like a yo-yo) but clearly defined, the author cleverly weaves multiple plot lines, unreliable narrators, and timelines to create a cohesive, unputdownable story that will have your heart beating with suspense, glued to the pages until the end! Only K.L. Slater could pull this off like a rock star!

Unreliable narrators, dark secrets, deceit, betrayal, trust, protection, and a web of lies. How far will each go to protect their loved ones? Where nothing is as it appears.

Meet the players:
Parker and Luna (Main Characters)
Barney (Parker & Luna's young son)
Nicola and Cal (Parker's parents)
Marie and Jo (Luna's parents)
Sarah (young mother found murdered)

EXPLOSIVE: When one wrong deed turns into a domino effect—it causes irreparable damage and harm to everyone involved.

A cautionary tale that could be ripped from today's true-crime headlines. Never cover up, assist, or keep deadly secrets! They will come back to haunt you.

Parker and Luna have dropped off their son at Parker's parent's house (Nicola and Cal) for a sleepover. They are to have a night out for a function and 'staying' over at a hotel. (British seems to call this 'stopping')

Nicola (a former cancer patient) and loving mother/grandmother is concerned about her son. He seems distant, and they hardly see their grandson. Parker told Nicola he had something to say to her the following morning (Saturday), and he did not want his father or wife to overhear. But there is an accident before he has a chance.

Nicola and Cal live a modest life, and Cal owns a small plumbing, heating, and air conditioning company. Parker was never interested in his dad's business and closer to his mom. Parker is an ambitious and successful businessman in sales and has done very well. Luna is a fashion influencer.

Luna's parents, Joe/Marie, are wealthy and look down on Parker's family. He was not quite good enough for her family. Therefore, Parker's parents seldom see their grandson since most of the time is spent with her family.

For some reason, Parker and Luna do not stay overnight at the hotel and are instead involved in a horrible car accident. Parker's injuries are worse than Luna's. Barney is still at Nicola's house, and she gets the keys to go to Parker's house to gather more clothes and items for Barney for an extended stay.

However, when she is there, she sees things that make her concerned. They are sleeping in separate bedrooms. The house is for sale? What is going on? Then she is about to leave and notices everyone's trash bins are out, so she puts them out and discovers a bag behind them. It looks like good stuff, so she takes it home with her.

When she discovers a scarf inside that looks like the scarf on the news, she is distraught. What is going on? Could her son or daughter-in-law be involved in a murder?

A young mother, Sarah, has been strangled and murdered in an alley. There were no suspects, even though a car like Parker's was seen near the crime scene, but he was away at a conference and not a suspect.

Nicola cannot let this go. She must hold on to this scarf until she can speak with her son. But he says a few words that chill her to the bone. Then, he is put into an induced coma and not able to speak further about the scarf.

Told from POV: Nicola, Parker, Luna, Sarah, Maria, and the Nottinghamshire Police detectives—bouncing from one time period to another, past and present, when the dark secrets are slowly unraveled in this complex web of lies and deceit.

OMG! This twisty mystery of domestic suspense will have you guessing and second-guessing every character and their motives. It is not until around 70% that the real killer is revealed, and all the puzzle pieces and players start coming together. I will say I guessed the second twist; however, it did not alter my level of entertainment.

Your loyalties will change throughout the book as the author keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Wow! HUSBAND AND WIFE IS INTENSE! With mounting suspense, tension, unreliable narrators, red herrings, and a spectacular non-linear timeline —A STELLAR domestic suspense and one of Slater's best!

Like a stick of dynamite that simmers and finally explodes! Great characterization, well-written, multi-layered, complex, emotional, perfectly paced, and mega-uber twisty. 5 Stars +. Trust me, I stayed up two nights until the wee hours of the morning with no sleep as HUSBAND AND WIFE is utterly unputdownable!

I am a big fan of the author (fav) and have read almost all her books; however, HUSBAND AND WIFE is like nothing I have ever read, and well done, Queen Slater! The novel would make for a great movie!

Sarah's part reminded me of A. R. Torre's The Girl in 6E (minus the erotic part). For fans of K.L. Slater and Freida McFadden—those who enjoy well-written psychological thrillers.

Special thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced digital reading copy.

This is one of those books where the reader is led to believe X happened, but really it was Y. For the whole book, we are fed small snippets, and the characters reveal vague and ambiguous pieces of information designed to lead us right up the garden path. Then the big twist is finally made known, and suddenly not a single thing any of the characters did makes any bloody sense.

1. AS IF you wouldn't have destroyed that scarf. I don't care what else you've got going on in your life; making sure the scarf is destroyed or gotten rid of is your only priority.

2. Luna is not just an unlikeable character; she does not have a single redeeming feature, which I hate in characters because if this were really the way they were, there is no way that they could sustain a relationship with anybody, let alone one where somebody is devoted to them.

3. What was the point of all the cloak-and-dagger stuff? Looking at a bit of porn and engaging with somebody with an OnlyFans account really isn't enough to warrant the level of blackmail they all went along with, then the murder, etc. Nicola is a complete twit; Cam would have been able to lie his way out of it, and even if he couldn't, he didn't have an affair; he just paid money to a webcam girl. Like FFS, she survived cancer; she'll survive finding out her husband is a pervy tosser.

4. You don't actually need to read the whole book; just jump straight to the last few chapters, where not 1, not 2, but THREE different characters retell the whole stupid plot from start to finish. Yawn.

5. Nicola is a twit. Everything she does, from confronting her gravely ill son and DIL in the hospital to visiting the victim's mother (and LMAO becoming friends with her) and feigning dementia when the cops turn up, is just idiotic.

No stars for you! Ok, 2 stars I'm feeling generous.

What in the 'family affair' is going on here?

Husband and Wife follows a married couple who have gotten into a car accident. While at the hospital a police investigation is taking place over a murder of a young mum. We follow the journey of how all is connected.

This is my first K.L slater book and I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. I think her books would be great as a filler read after reading a heavy book. I am not opposed to checking out her other novels.

PROS

‣ Twisty, fun, popcorn thriller read
‣ Short Chapters
‣ Multiple POVS
‣ Unreliable narrators

CONS

‣Repetition with more repetition, with another big scoop of repetition.
‣The characters were so draining and annoying beyond belief
‣ Far Fetched and dragged on in some places
‣ The constant jumping in timelines made it quite confusing at times

2.5 ⭐

K.L Slater has done it again with her latest offering ‘Husband and wife’.
Parker and Luna are unhappy with their marriage but, decide to go out for the night, but tragedy strikes, and they have a car accident which leaves Parker in a critical condition. Luna gets off a bit more lightly and is in the main hospital ward.
Nicola, Parkers mum is looking after the couple’s son and as decides that Barney will be staying with her until the couple come out of hospital. Which Luna’s parents and none to pleased about. Nicola takes Parkers keys and decides to get some of Barney’s belongings to make him more comfortable. After getting some of his things and she is leaving the house she sees that the rest of the street has put the bins out. So, she decides to do the same for the couple. When she sees including a picture of herself and Barney in the bin. Underneath that she finds a scarf that she recognises the Police are looking for in the connection of a murder. Nicola’s wonders in Parker or Luna has something to do with the woman’s death. So, she takes it and waits to see if Parker wakes up to aske me about it. But as she told Luna of her findings. Luna’s tells the Police.
Thank you Bookoutre for a copy of ‘Husband a wife’ I have followed this author since her first book, and I reckon this is her best one yet. This is brilliant unputdownable thriller from the author that I read it in one sitting. It kept me guessing and guessing. I loved it. “Husband and Wife”, by K. L. Slater

This was my 13th by this author (all read in the last 7 months) and I kind of enjoyed it.
The story wasn’t crazy, absurd or silly, but believable.
I did think that the writing was solid and the storytelling was engaging or captivating, never mind the unlikeable characters.
The storyline (told through multiple POV’s) was interesting and I didn’t find the timeline structure confusing (there are lots of back and forth, now and then).
I did try the audiobook, which is currently available on Audible (Canada) at no additional costs for subscribers, but although I liked the narrators voice, by chapter 15 I couldn’t remember anything and I didn’t know which character was being played, as her voice did not change that much, so I purchased a copy of the e-book and started reading from the beginning. I enjoyed reading the writing words a lot more.
I wouldn’t call this book a thriller or suspense, but a drama mystery.
I quite loved the twits at the end.
As I was very pleased and entertained, I’m rating it as 5 stars.
A very easy and fast read.

e-book (Kindle): 350 pages (default), 69 chapters (including epilogue)

Husband and Wife is an utterly gripping and unputdownable domestic suspense thriller . Right from the start I was absorbed into the story and read this book in one sitting. Of course I knew in my head where the story was going and who the culprit actually was… until the reveal and I was left utterly flabbergasted. Yes I truly was and I love when that happens in a book . This is such a well written read with some great characters and not all of them nice . KL Slater writes such brilliant suspense thrillers and you are guaranteed to be in for a twisty ride and this one was certainly no exception.

As a fan of k l slater i have never been disappointed and once again this is spot on..The burb tells the story in essence a husband and wife inteoven into another missing mother myatery. Its a skillful blurb and you believe the story is based on parker and luna and the other characters mainly their both sets of parents are side characters but that is so wrong.
This is a psychological thriller that has you hooked from page 1 told from the pov of parker. Nichola his mum and luna his wife with the interwoven missung story from the pov of the police. Skillful writing brings everything together and you are lead betwern luna and parker and then bang bang twist after twist and you realise she's done it again with her creativity i loved every second of this from the front cover and burb and had to admit I was sad for it to end.
Thanks so much netgallery, publisher and author for my highly tecommended 5 star arc.

Disappointed

Expected a great read but that is not what I found. The writing style of this author put me off with so much detailed description of every single thing. Such as.. the zipper is on her puffer jacket , then the jacket is padded, next the jacket isn't warm enough, all in one scene. But my biggest problem is every chapter is labeled either past or present. I'm on 17 now and am tossing this in the trash.

Karin slaughter never disappoints. True to form, this book kept the twists and turns coming. My husband pointed out that I kept putting my hands up to my face. Even though this book was told from multiple pov's, I didn't have an issue keeping up with it. This book will really make you think, "how far would you go for your family?"
Parker tells his mom that he has something important to tell his mom but never gets the chance because he is fighting for his life. His mom is watching Parker and his wife, Luna's son and needs to go pick up some things for him. She ends up finding a scarf that could belong to a dead woman. She doesn't know what to think or who to trust. This book was just riveting. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
