When the rug is pulled from under Detective Sloane Eckhart, she leaves the Billings PD and returns to Libby, Montana. Eight years ago she left with her pride and the promise of a future, but her heart was broken. On her return, there is no pride left, no prospects to speak of, but at least her heart is safely secured in the back seat.
Still, a bit of groveling, a kind offer of help, and a brand-new job with the sheriff’s office quickly gets her back on her feet.
High Meadow will always be home to Dan Blakely. Working with horses, being part of the HMT search and rescue team, and now building his own home right next door checks all his boxes. Only one thing is missing, but that dream walked out the door a long time ago.
Still, his life is good, steady…and perhaps a little boring.
That quickly changes when the rescue of a young, teenage girl, places the new sheriff’s detective squarely in his path. He’s not bored now, doing his best to keep her safe, even as their past holds them back while they fight for a future.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
Love this start to the HMT Second Generation series! Return to old friends and new with a second chance romance and fast-paced serial killer suspense plot.
Looking forward to "High Intensity" book 2 in the series with Wolf's story!
I absolutely love that we are getting the next generation, and Dan and Sloane were the perfect start of the series. I loved it. Their story sucks you in and won’t let go. If I didn’t have to work the next day, I would have devoured this in one sitting. I’m so excited to get more from this series!
DNF. Bored to tears and once again, 2nd chance tropes suck.
Spoilers Ahead!
Safety:
- 8 year separation - MCs former BFFs who crushed on each other but H rejected her attempts to seduce him on the day he buried his Mother. (he was drunk and doesn't remember it). - h hightails it out of town for 8 yrs with no communication and ends up becoming a cop/detective and getting involved with OM who got her pregnant. OM not interested in playing happy families so she leaves and returns home with her tail between her legs. - H not celibate either during separation. He had just broken things off from his latest fling when h returned to town. OW made a brief drama at seeing him with h and how quickly he moved on, blah, blah, blah. - No chemistry between MCs, no relationship development, no major drama on the suspense front, etc.
In a nutshell, boring and just didn't hold my attention. DNF at 28%.
Wow! What a great story to start this new series with! I adore everything about this couple.
Life has thrown Sloane into a vulnerable position but she’s far from being fragile. I appreciated that she was able to pull herself up and take steps that didn’t offer any guarantees. She’s actually one tough lady and watching her deal with a case that would make the strongest of individuals weak had me admiring her all the more.
Dan is everything I love in a Freya Barker hero. He’s a little rough and rugged, the type of friend who will drop everything, and all kinds of swoony when it comes to his thoughts and reactions to Sloane. And oh lord, there is nothing more alluring (as in my ovaries just exploded) than a man tending to a baby. This author knows exactly how to paint the picture and stir all the emotions along with it.
This is a fast paced read with so many amazing characters. With layers of danger, drama, mysteries and steamy goodness, this book was impossible to put down. I can’t recommend this one enough!
While this is the start of a whole new series there is connections to not only the original High Mountain Trackers but also to the Broken Arrow MC series. Our main character Dan Blakely who happens to be the half sister of Lindsey who is married to Wapi in the broken Arrow series was also introduced to us in the original series when he worked at the ranch to try to make money to care for his ill mother the men of the ranch moved her there so that it would be easier for Dan as he cared for her as she died of pancreatic cancer, we also met Sloane Eckhart these two loved one another but Dn didn't have time for a girlfriend while he cared for his mother Now eight years later Sloane has returned to work as a detective for the Libby police force and she has brought her 5 month old daughter Aspen with her. This time Dan is determined to make both of them his family. But when a rescue of a young girl turns into a hunt for a killer Sloane is placed in danger and Dan will do whatever he needs to keep her safe because there is no way he is going to lose her again
I was so excited for this book. I've been waiting impatiently since I knew this would be a thing. It did not disapoint, this was so good. 4,5 stars for sure (I really wish goodreads had that option but alas). I loved the characters and the whole new generation thing, I've been waiting for Dan's story since the beggining and Jackson's too (I really hope he has a book too, I'm almost 100% sure he will). Dan was a sweet man and an alpha one, as they always are, and I was here for it. He loved Sloane since they were both young, and seeing them having their chance now, was so good. Seeing him with Aspen was just the cutest thing ever. Man and babies are every women's weakness. I loved Sloane too, and the fantastic mother she was to Aspen. Little Aspen was the most adorable thing ever. I can't wait to read more in this series
This was a fantastic way to kick off a new series. It ticked all my boxes and the twists got me good. It very nearly made my top reads list, the only reason it didn't is because I'm a details focused reader and would of loved more information on what was unearthed. I adored this couple both together and apart, and many of the side characters captured my attention too. I can't wait for the next book in the series. (Yes my review is vague, but that's because it's best to go in blind to try put all the pieces together)
Amazing new Series by Freya Barker. Sloane and Dan have History. But both have different memories. While juggling their reconnaissance they find a girl who was missing and with it a whole new criminal case. We see some new characters and come up to a few old ones as well.
Freya never ceases to amaze me with her story telling capabilities. Not only does she do chemistry OH SO WELL, but the suspense she adds to her romances keeps me on my toes! I love her characters, they are relatable and real in every sense.
Dan and Sloane’s story was so good! I loved how they picked up after years apart, and I loved how Dan fully embraced everything that Sloane is (and everything she comes with).
High Frequency, book one in the High Mountain Trackers 2G series brings us a whole new group of characters as they work alongside the more seasoned ones we already know. This story has the same flavor of romance combined with danger that I love from Ms. Barker’s books. Detective Sloane Eckhart returns to Libby, Montana after being gone for with years as a single mom to a beautiful baby girl named Aspen. She takes a job with the sheriff’s office and is immediately thrown into the deep end of investigating the remnants of abductions and murders that happened in the mountains right in the backyard of where many of the High Mountain Trackers team is located. Dan Blakely loves his life in Libby, MT but he feels there is something missing. He is part of the HMT and rescue team and loves his job so when Sloane returns to this small town he realizes what has been missing and bonus, she has an adorable daughter that easily wins his heart. Mistakes were made by both Dan and Sloane years earlier but when they are thrown together to find the perpetrators of these murders the find themselves getting a second chance to open up to all the feelings they both secretly held for each other years earlier. But first they have multiple crimes to solve and the answers maybe closer than they expected.
Wonderful, amazing and action packed are the words I would use to describe this new series.
“Cowboys don’t sing.”
Dan and Sloane finally get their second chance in the HMT 2G starter. We saw Dan grow up and mature into the man he is now. Yummy new additions to the team Thant I can’t wait to read more about. Of course crossover from my two favorite series by this author makes it top notch fantastic!!
As new faces and some familiar ones circle back to the ranch, Sloane returns with some extra baggage and heartbreaks.
New job opportunities come with new complications and other priorities for her time.
Dangerous situations, unexpected hazards, and some heart damage from past bad choices make for a bumpy ride that's a great whodunnit plus hit stuff read.
Wow, this book was soooo good. I couldn’t put it down! I absolutely loved Dan and Sloane. They were perfect for each other. Freya is the Queen of Suspense. This book will keep you guessing until the very end!! I highly recommend it! I can’t wait for Wolff’s book.
***** ❤️❤️❤️ Finally the Spin Off next Gen High Mountain Tracker Serien we all have been waiting for.
Dan and Sloane have a history together. Years ago they were in Love..but circumstances, life and old and fresh wounds held them apart.
When Sloane Returns..their Jobs push them together and old Sparks ignite again. When a rescue mission uncovers a serielkiller on the lose...Dan, Sloane and the whole Mountain Tracker Team have to come together to make sure Justice ist served.
Like always Its a clever written, fast paced and well developed book. A brilliant start of the next Generation Mountain trackers....
So, I loved every bit of Generation 1.0 of the High Mountain Trackers — Jonas, Sully, Fletch, and Bo. Yippee Ky Ai! LOL. They were gruff, built, wounded, older, and mostly wiser. And their love interests were all kicka$$ women, not willing to live by anyone else’s rules. And of course, old standbys are there too, like Jonas’ dad.
And now, HMT 2.0 has begun and all I can say is, “SWOON!”
And if you haven’t ever read Freya’s books and are thinking about starting, OMG, what are you waiting for?
The guys are hot and broody — Dan Blakely is a perfect example. We saw him as a young kid in HMT 1.0 and now he’s all grown up and getting ready to set up a life for himself.
These guys ride horses, find lost and missing persons, and protect the ones they love at all costs. It was incredible to see where Dan has gone since he was introduced. “You’ve come far baby!”
And Sloane. We also saw her in the original series. Related to Sully and making a name for herself in this world. She’s got new responsibilities and is embarking on a new life for herself as well.
But when they come back into contact…. It’s tense. Until they realize… oppps, don’t want to mark this with spoilers so let’s just say that you don’t want to miss this book. Or the new series.
And the best thing about Freya’s Colorado/Montana books are that they are interconnected. Loved Cedar Tree? La Plata Co? Arrow’s Edge? You’ll find the men and women in places you least expect them. And I couldn’t love it more.
All the connections also make me re-read the books again and again. So I start with Slim to None and re-read all the interested books and then swing through Portland, ME and the GEM series. It makes for an absolute stellar month of reading.
HMT 2.0 may have even started off better than the first generation. So go grab it now. And go check out the backlist of related books as well!
Freya, keep these stories coming!!!! SO much love for your characters!!!!
4.25stars-HIGH FREQUENCY is the first instalment in Freya Barker’s contemporary, adult HIGH MOUNTAIN TRACKERS 2G romantic suspense series, a spin off from, and set in the author’s HIGH MOUNTAIN TRACKERS and ARROW’S EDGE MC series. This is single mother, Detective Sloane Eckhart, and search and rescue specialist Dan Blakely’s story line. Dan Blakely is Lindsey Zimmerman’s half brother (EDGE OF NOWHERE 7).
Told from dual first person perspectives (Dan and Sloane) HIGH FREQUENCY follows the second chance relationship between our story line couple. Approximately eight years earlier Sloane walked out of Dan’s life but in the ensuing years, each remember something different about that time. Fast forward to present day wherein Sloane returns to Libby Montana as their newly hired Detective, a position that will bring her up close and personal with the man she once loved. Enter Dan Blakely. A missing teen, and the discovery of several bodies, and damage to Dan’s property finds Sloane diving head first into the investigation only to discover there may be a connection to all three, a connection that places Sloane in the direct line of fire. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Dan and Sloane, as they navigate their rekindled romance, and the possibility of a serial killer in the small town of Libby Montana.
The world building follows the second chance relationship between our story line couple, as well as the investigation into the discover of several bodies. As Sloane begins to uncover the clues, someone else targets Dan, in an act of anger and betrayal.
The relationship between Dan and Sloane is a rekindling romance. Eight years earlier Sloane walked out of Dan’s life, and Dan has no idea what happened or why. As our couple rebuild upon what was, Dan discovers not all was at it seemed. Working together, as well as journey towards their own happily ever after finds Sloane overwhelmed with everything. The $ex scenes are passionate.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and familiar secondary and supporting characters, many of whom we met in original High Mountain Trackers series including Sully and Pippa. We are introduced to Sloane’s mother and step-father, as well as deputies Jason Heany and Frank Schmidt: Dan’s ex Shelby.
HIGH FREQUENCY is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, obsession and murder, forgiveness and acceptance. The premise is dramatic and intriguing; the characters are desperate and charismatic; the romance is magnetic.
This book gives readers a wonderful, sexy second chance at love romance along with a very intriguing and thrilling suspense story. Sloane and Dan were friends nearly a decade ago with hopes of being something more. Then one fateful night changed everything, a night that Dan cannot recall. All communication between them ended. Until she shows up in town again spend time with family, they haven’t seen each other again. But she isn’t alone. She has her baby daughter in her arms.
Now seems to be the time for secrets to be revealed. What happened that night years ago that sent Sloane feeing without any further words exchanged? Why is she back in town now? Why didn’t she tell her family about her pregnancy and her new baby? Sloane and Dan get their chance to ask questions, renew connections and take the step they both wanted so much years ago. Unfortunately, they find themselves in the middle of a situation that is almost too horrible to contemplate, but true nevertheless. Sloane, Dan and their colleagues find themselves in a dangerous race to find a predator, a predator who will do anything to stop them in their tracks.
Dan and Sloane are two characters that touch my heart. Both are stubborn, proud (sometimes too proud) and dedicated to their jobs. They are also loyal to friends and family, dealing with trust and self worth issues, and in need of a change in their lives. Dan has learned not to waste time or second guess himself. This time he is going after what he wants, and that’s a future with Sloane and her adorable daughter, Aspen. Sloane is tired of keeping secrets, tired of pretending everything is alright and that she has everything under control. Her daughter has brought joy, extra stress and new priorities to her life. With her mom out of the country, her uncle and his place in Libby, Montana is her safe haven and the only place she feels is her home. Seeing Dan again under stressful circumstances is unexpected. It takes her a bit to sort out the family situation she has caused. Then she and Dan get a chance to talk and it becomes clear that they both made a mistake that cost them years they could have been together. Dan is ready to rekindle things and move forward, but Sloane is not so sure that’s a good idea. Dan can be patient, oh so persuasive and has a secret weapon. He is great with babies and little Aspen adores him. A big, gruff and protective cowboy who is a hit with babies? How can Sloane resist him? She can’t!!!
I will happily recommend the sexy, steamy and suspenseful book.

High Frequency by Freya Barker High Mountain Tracers HMT 2G #1
Love this author and every book of hers that I have read – love this new younger group of men working at High Meadow Ranch and knowing they will each get a book of their own.
What I liked: * Dan Blakely: strong, caring, protective, put his dreams on hold and found new ones, loves his job a High Meadow Ranch, was and is attracted to Sloane and wants to get it right this time * Sloane Eckhart: detective, single mom, has made some poor decisions and moved back to the place she felt safe and secure, bright, knows her job, loves her daughter, still attracted to Dan * Finding out what happened that kept Dan and Sloane apart for eight years * That I could see Sloane and Dan together and felt they were perfect for one another * That Sloane and her mother were able to work through some issues * Supporting characters like nonagenarian Thomas, the team working on High Meadow Ranch, the sheriff, Baby Aspen, Emo the cadaver dog, and so many more * Getting to see some of the people from older generation in the first High Mountain Series * The search and rescue aspects of the story * The suspense/Crime bits with missing girls and finding out how they ended up missing * The way the community pulled together to provide support to Sloane * Thinking about Wolff and Jillian maybe getting together * All of it except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about how evil people some people can be * Thinking about the fear young girls might experience in the hands of predators * Having to wait for the next book in the series
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely!
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Freya brings us a whole new set of characters to get to know and love as she starts this G2 spin off but she doesn't leave the ones we came to love behind. A great mix of the old and the new. For readers who haven't read the first series but are jumping in, she does a great job of letting us get to know everyone.
Life has been anything but smooth for Sloane from an early age, but she has always seemed to find her own path. She finds herself in a situation once again and knows that there is only one place to help her start over. It's not going to be easy as she upset some people she loved dearly when she left Libby, but knows deep in her heart this is where she wants to give her daughter a new start.
Dan loves his job with the High Mountain Trackers/ Breeding facility. And the people here have become his extended family. Though he has found some true blood family since letting his mom go all those years ago. Building his home and moving forward but knowing that something is missing. He has a deep need for more and though shocked to she her, he quickly realizes the missing piece was always her.
Ms Barker brings us a new grewling mystery to solve as we read Sloan & Dan's story. The mountains of Montana seem to be a breading grounds for bad people. As Sloan dives into her first case being back on the Libby Sheriff's department, she is full of tenacity trying to save these girls and not let this monster take another. Dan being the Alpha he as learned from the HMT team is determined to let her thrive but always being near to help her so she doesn't have to go it alone.
Grab your copy and enjoy this face paced suspense full of emotions and acceptance.
**Advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest review. **
This is the first book in the second generation of this series. I loved the other books and couldn’t wait to read this one. It did take me a minute to figure out these characters relation to the others. Sloane was young in the 1st gen series and Dan was just a ranch hand. Now they are older and we get more of their story. The two had danced around each other for a while. Now that Sloane is back Dan isn’t going to let this second chance slip through his fingers. Sloane must decide if she is willing to take the chance on a man again. Sloane is finding that she wants different things than she ever thought she would want. Her focus has shifted even after coming back to the place she has always felt most at home. Then she works her first case and stumbles onto a much bigger case. Dan is determined to give Sloane whatever she needs. He is going to help her with her case as much as he can and protect her while doing it. Dan sees Sloane differently than anyone in her life. They made mistakes in the past combined with misunderstanding. They will need to be clear with each other going forward if they want a chance at a future together. I love this book so much and can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Sloane and Dan are fantastic characters. Sloane is finding herself all over again. She has been through so much and is facing some issue still. She made some decisions and is now having to live with not really letting her family in on her choices earlier. I love all these characters and I am so glad to get to revisit them. After reading this book I went through my kindle and read all the unread books by Freya I had. I love her and she is a fantastic must read author for me. You should go read all her books too. Congrats Freya on another fantastic read.
Second Chances and High Stakes: The Next Generation of Trackers Delivers!
"A new generation of High Mountain Trackers (HMT) have arrived on the scene. You will not be disappointed." Freya Barker plunges us back into the stunning mountains of Montana that we fell in love with in the original series, delivering a powerful mix of intensity, mystery, suspense, and drama! This series return with the "2G" generation is everything a fan could hope for.
We meet Detective Sloane Eckhart, who returns to Libby, Montana, with nothing left but the pieces of her broken career and heart. Eight years ago, she walked away with her pride, but now, all that's left is the burden of her past. Her return is anything but simple, especially when she crosses paths with the one man she couldn't forget.
Dan Blakely has always considered High Meadow home. Dan happens to be one of those characters we meet back in the first book of the HMT and appeared in a few others, but this time he has his own compelling story. He is building a steady life, though perhaps a little boring, until the rescue of a young, teenage girl places the new sheriff’s detective squarely in his path.
The chemistry between Sloane and Dan is electric and complicated. Their past holds them back, but as they are forced together to navigate the escalating danger, they fight fiercely for a future. Freya Barker makes adult romance with adult content—we get thrilling suspense and intensity, deep family bonds, and a love that feels earned. Come see what the second generation of the HMT has to offer in this unforgettable second-chance story!
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Entertaining Easy-to-read Wonderful characters Great world building Page-turner
High Frequency is the first book in this author’s next romantic suspense series, High Mountain Trackers, HMT 2G. As an avid romantic suspense reader since an age when I was probably too young to read romance, I first found this author with her PASS Security Series. Freya Barker cemented herself on my must-read list for romantic suspense authors after I gobbled up the entire series. High Frequency is technically a standalone title, but I believe you’ll better understand the characters and backstory if you first read High Ground (the 3rd book in the original High Mountain Trackers series). However, it’s not a prerequisite in order for you to enjoy Dan and Sloane’s story.
This book has everything an avid romantic suspense lover wants when they start a new story: dynamic characters, a beautiful and challenging setting, and perfectly paced action. Add in a sassy yet stubborn heroine, a tough and rugged hero with a heart of gold, and secondary characters the author so eloquently brings to life, and you have an unputdownable winner of a novel. Oh, and a sprinkle of angst. Sloane is stubborn and independent to a fault, so there is a good bit of angst between her and Dan, as well as a massive misunderstanding from their past that they must work through to move forward. Now that I think about it, Sloane’s relationship with almost everyone of importance in her life is pretty angsty but not so far gone she can’t work through the intricacies surrounding each one. Finally, the action ebbed and flowed until the plot twist I didn’t see coming, which is honestly one of the biggest reasons why I return to this author’s work time and again. I eagerly anticipated this story, and yet again, Freya Barker did not disappoint. I can’t wait for the next one!
This new series, a spinoff of the author’s much loved series, High Mountain Trackers, starts with a bang. To really appreciate more this story, this reader highly recommends reading High Meadows. In that story, we met Dan Blakely, the main character of this book. At the time, he was a young, recently hired ranch hand, caring for his ill mother. Years later, Dan not only is an essential part of the ranch, but he’s also a member of the Mighty Mountain Trackers. Dan never expected the girl he always loved to come back to the ranch and with a baby. Sloane Eckhart, has left Billings and is the newly hired detective in Libby. She has no desire to see Dan , especially since she felt he turn his back to her. Little did she know that he too felt left behind. While a relationship seems to blossom not everything is going smoothly. When a young girl that was likely abducted is rescued from the mountains, human remains are found around the area. To whom do they belong? Is there a serial killer and if so , is this related to the abductions? This was an engaging story from the beginning to the end. Both main characters as well as the secondary ones were well developed. While the romance was sweet, the whodunnit keeps the readers guessing. Lastly, it was nice to “visit” with some of the characters from the-previous series and see how they are doing. Looking to the next book in the series. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Buoni Ami Press. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Once again, the writing of Freya Barker does not disappoint. I loved the plot line, the cast of characters, which includes characters from both the High Meadow and the Arrow’s Edge MC series, and the fact that the characters feel so very real. So human. You become invested in the characters and their issues because the writing pulls you in and allows you to care about them.
This story is about Detective Sloane Eckhart and Daniel Blakely. They share a history although each remember it differently. Sloane is Sully’s niece while Dan is the half-brother to Lindsay (who is married to Wapi). Dan’s mother has passed and Sloane, having left Billing PD, has returned to High Meadow with her baby daughter hoping to get her life in order. Sloane takes a position with the Libby PD which puts her in close proximity to Dan who is determined to make Sloane and her daughter, Aspen a part of his life. Unfortunately, the discovery of human remains intervenes.
The storyline has something for everyone - an -ex, a rescued young girl, skeletal remains, romance, and danger. As with Freya’s writing there are questions - Will Sloane and Dan get their HEA? Is there a serial killer in their midst? Will Jackson return to High Meadow? I must admit that I didn’t envision that ending - but no spoilers here.
I read this book in one sitting as I didn’t want to put it down. I would definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
High Frequency is the first book in Freya Barker’s new romantic suspense series called High Mountain Trackers HMT 2G. It’s characters are the next generation of trackers. This fantastic second chance story is written in first person from the point of view of both the hero, Dan Blakely and the heroine, Sloane Eckhart.
Eight years after leaving Libby, Montana, Detective Sloane Eckhart returns to start over with her infant daughter, Aspen. With her new job with the sheriff’s office, Sloane begins to settle down and build her new life, until a missing person’s case throws her into the path of Dan Blakely, her former crush. Dan has made a good life for himself at High Meadow as a horse trainer and member of HMT Search and Rescue, he’s only missing someone to share it with, until Sloane walk back into his life.
First, they must overcome past misunderstandings, and deal with their changing circumstances. Then, they have to uncover the secrets discovered in the valley gorge. Will their past get in the way of finally get their happily ever after or will an unknown enemy ending everything before it begins? Read it and find out.
This book, while linked to the original series, can be read as a standalone. The readers are given glimpses into the lives of some of the founding members of the High Mountain Trackers, while being introduced to new characters. I can’t wait to read Wolfe, JD, James and Jackson’s stories.
This is a voluntary review of a reader’s advance copy from Booksprout.

When Detective Sloane Eckhart returns to Libby, Montana, she hopes to get her old job back at the sheriff’s office and start over again.
Dan Blakely, Sloane’s former friend, still lives at the same ranch he’s worked at since leaving school. He’s also a part of the High Mountain Trackers Search and Rescue Team, so Sloane finds it very hard not to meet up with him. They both have memories of when Sloane left eight years prior, and both are different!
These two lead characters are fabulous together, and their chemistry is still extremely strong. Sloane has changed, but to be honest, I think for the better. I think she acted and then thought things through, whereas now, although she is still a tad impetuous, she thinks things through more.
The suspense element in this story is terrific. It really had me guessing for quite a while, and the twist when all was revealed was great.
I look forward to reading more in this series, especially the next book about Jillian and Wolfe.
