The Second CEO: Accelerating Scale When Following the Founder

Rate this book
The first roadmap for a Founder-CEO succession like no other.

If you’ve been tapped on the shoulder to follow a founder or you’re interested in being in the running, be forewarned that this isn’t your average transition. The founder has skills, talents, and personality that have built the company and the culture. It’s the Second CEO’s job to respect the founder and their vision while creating a culture and vision of their own and adding massive value. But how?

Matt Sharrers knows, firsthand, what you have to get right and what common roadblocks you should be on the lookout for. He details it all in The Second Accelerating Scale When Following the Founder. Sharrers understands what it takes to create culture and value when you’re following a founder. And not just because he did it himself, leading through double-digit revenue growth, but also because he has coached and mentored dozens of Second CEOs through their transitions as well as their first years.

This book takes you step-by-step, through your own journey, whether you’re already in the running or you want to be. And whether the founder is leaving entirely, staying on in a different position, or moving solely to the board, Sharrers has you covered with real-life stories and tips from founders, serial Second CEOs, and private equity investors. And he offers his own advice, called Key Accelerants, that will best position you to drive the kind of growth you need to get to your next benchmark.

In The Second CEO, Matt Sharrers brings his decades of helping leaders improve the enterprise value of their companies to you in an interactive format. Each chapter details his proven process for cultivating culture and driving value and helps you craft your own plan. You’ll learn about the crucial mindset you need, discover the qualities far more important than degrees or even experience. You’ll learn what you need to do during the first twelve months and beyond—to think and act like the leader who’s going to take the company to the next level.

I was kind of hoping this book would be a little more open to people who would work their way up to one day becoming CEO, but it felt as if the book assumed you were already nearing that goal. It was a good read, and I enjoyed seeing what transitions look like across the board when this occurs. I was hoping that the author would dive a little deeper with some of the advice he was providing, but I understand that it's not possible when you're trying to fit so much in a decent short-size book. It's a start, I'd say!

In "The Second CEO: Accelerating Scale When Following the Founder," Matt Sharrers offers a comprehensive guide for executives stepping into the role of CEO after a company’s founder. The book addresses the unique challenges and opportunities faced by these leaders as they navigate the transition from entrepreneurial beginnings to sustainable growth.

Sharrers draws on his own experiences and extensive research to provide practical strategies and frameworks tailored to the specific dynamics of scaling organizations. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining the founding vision while implementing structured processes and systems to support expansion.

The book is structured logically, with each chapter focusing on key aspects of leadership transition, including organizational culture, strategic alignment, talent management, and operational efficiency. This approach allows readers to delve into specific areas of interest or concern relevant to their own leadership journey.

While "The Second CEO" offers valuable insights and actionable advice, it may not appeal equally to all readers. Those outside the realm of executive leadership or without direct involvement in scaling companies might find some sections less applicable or engaging. The book’s emphasis on practical strategies for organizational growth may resonate more with business professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of executive transitions and strategic leadership.

Critically, while Sharrers provides a robust framework, some readers may seek more nuanced case studies or diverse perspectives to supplement the theoretical underpinnings presented. The absence of detailed real-world examples could limit the book’s ability to resonate deeply with readers looking for in-depth, anecdotal evidence of successful CEO transitions.

Overall, "The Second CEO" by Matt Sharrers serves as a valuable resource for executives navigating the complexities of scaling companies founded by entrepreneurs. Its structured approach and practical advice offer a solid foundation for understanding the challenges and opportunities inherent in this leadership transition.

[Rating: 3.5/5 stars]

This rating reflects the book’s relevance and utility within its target audience while acknowledging potential limitations in broader appeal and depth of case study analysis.

There comes a time in any successful company’s history when the founder or original CEO steps down. Maybe they’re steered the ship flawlessly up to this point, but now, this transition creates a vacuum. Who will rise up to fill it? And what can they do to follow someone who seemed like the very essence of the company?

These are the questions that this book endeavors to answer. The author knows all about what it’s like to follow an industry giant. In the beginning, you might not be viewed the same as the titan whose reputation made them such a legend. However, if you follow certain guidelines and you’re mindful of various pitfalls, you may one day be able to say you guided the business entity to just as much success as its predecessor. Consider this to be your instructive rulebook on how to make that happen.

Stepping up – successfully!

Author Matt Sharer retired from professional hockey to become the first employee of the high ranked market strategy consulting firm SBI, subsequently being chosen to follow in the steps of the founder. His progress in making SBI into one of the largest boutique firms in GTM consulting is the foundation of this valuable book.

In a fascinating and accessible guide for achievement in leading businesses, Matt’s writing style mirrors his impact on both the members of his company and on CEOs he has coached. Acknowledging and honoring the path and pattern of a company founder, stepping into that chair as the new CEO and encouraging company growth while developing characteristics of being one’s own unique persona becomes an inspiring path to learn – and be prepared to follow.

Sharrers knows what he is talking about

This guide is ideal for those transitioning into leadership roles, particularly following a founder-CEO. The plot is centered on the author's personal experiences and lessons learned through his careers in hockey, business, and consulting. It is evident that Sharrers knows what he is talking about. The characters are real. There is a strong focus on the dynamics between founders and successors. I found the writing style to be straightforward and practical. That way complex business concepts became very accessible to me, and I am no expert. I would say that this book is useful for aspiring CEOs, board members, and anyone involved in corporate succession. The structure is logically organized. This deserves a huge mention. Structure is the key.

This book is the first one I came criticising on a topic of becoming a CEO straight after founder. There is a good advice and practical recommendations based on own experience finding self in these conditions. I liked the personal stories, what worked and what didn't. Surely each situation is unique however some guidelines are very useful. Bet on yourself is the key, you can make mistakes, have your own leadership style and be guided by your guts and thoughts how things should work. Most importantly is to realise that if you were selected for the role, you were thought to be capable to make it work.

There are a lot of valuable lessons in this book from an experienced entrepreneur. One lesson I have learned is that, most importantly, we can surround ourselves with valuable people who would be able to advise us, like coaches and mentors, even peers, for strategic guidance. Open communication with your team is crucial and most helpful in fostering a supportive environment. Board meetings should be used strategically. An active board engagement is necessary for most of the important decisions. These big decisions are ironed in by the consensus rather than by hasty decisions that might not benefit the company. It is a short read but its filled with valuable information

A book like this one is a must for those in business who are on the lookout for opportunities to scale their businesses.
Sharrers’ book is a sort of guide where his very own experience, real-life stories, pieces of advice, plenty of tips and strategies and step-by-step actions to take are combined to help others thrive.
The Second CEO is not only meant for newbies but also for those who are already in the business. Sometimes, it is not easy to move ahead or to overcome our personal limitations. Those dissatisfied with their current performance can now start fighting against the invisible forces that have conspired to hold them down.

Life Goal

To be honest, books like these motivate me to keep moving forward with my work, but they also help me be more strategic and set medium- and long-term goals to reach a position like that of the Second CEO.
The best part of this book is that the author presents everything from the experiences and perspective of someone who has held the position, and therefore has anecdotes, comments, and reflections on every action one takes along the way.
What I take away most from this book is definitely the mindset change it generates in anyone who gives themselves the opportunity to read it; it's impressive. Thanks to this book, I feel very motivated.

Firstly, a big thank you to Goodreads, the publisher, Advantage Books, and the author, Matt Sharrers, for the privilege of winning a digital copy of The Second CEO in a giveaway. I will also post my review to Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

I will start off my review by stating that I have little experience in business, but always have interest in personal stories of growth and success in hopes to glean insights and motivations from someone’s individual perspective. With that disclaimer, my overall review of the content is fairly limited as my knowledge is limited, but I hope to provide an honest review nonetheless.

"The Second CEO: Accelerating Scale When Following the Founder" by Matt Sharrers is a short and succinct, information-rich text that would be extremely helpful for any executive stepping into the challenging role of succeeding a company's founder. Sharrers offers his insight and life lessons in a collapsed and educational way that feels like a semester’s worth of class truncated. There’s lots of info on leadership transition and is packed with insights on strategies and practical advice that will give new CEOs tools to help them succeed in their new roles and drive growth and success within the company. His writing is engaging, blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, making it a really powerful resource on this pretty specific subject.

I kept in mind throughout that writing style, sentence structure, and word choice are coming from someone with a background in business and not necessarily a ton of experience in writing. I’m not sure that detailed, flowery language is necessary or desired in this kind of text, either. I appreciated the conversational tone and flowing, bulleted nature. Too many anecdotes and examples can make books like this a slog to get through, as sometimes the people writing are more interested in showing off their skills than teaching them. Sharrers has a great ability to give you the information without being too verbose. The anecdotes and examples that are brought up feel especially relevant and poignant.

Sharrers adeptly distills complex concepts into actionable steps (“Key Accelerants” at the end of each chapter) and provides a roadmap with options for building trust and company culture, establishing credibility with colleagues and clients, and driving change within and without. He emphasizes balancing respect for the founder's legacy with the need for innovation. The book's structure seems logically thought-out and well-organized without being robotic or boring. Sharrers also highlights the importance of personal growth, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence, making the book a valuable read for anyone interested in improving in these areas, even if they aren’t in an executive role or even in business.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who is in an executive role and/or hoping to move up, move forward in their career, anyone looking to improve their social skills within their workplace, and anyone looking for actionable steps on how to build resilience and success in a new position. This is a great, quick, knowledge-packed read.
