Shakespeare In The Romanian Cultural Memory

Rate this book
Matei-Chesnoiu (English, U. Ovidius Constanta, Romania) examines the cultural impact of Shakespeare in Romania, viewing performances and translations of his plays during the communist regime of the 1980s and 1990s as subversive and escapist. She discusses early translations and English histories in Romania, productions of the comedies since 1949, and the performances of his tragedies before and after the fall of communism. The last chapters focus on productions of Hamlet and the romances. Some of the chapters were based on papers given at various conferences by the author. Distributed by Associated University Presses.
