10 hours, 12 minutes

The widows are back! Big hair and bigger lies collide in the highly anticipated follow-up to Audible’s best-selling Young Rich Widows, where nothing’s more dangerous than a widow with nothing left to lose.

Set in neon-drenched Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1987, just two years after a plane carrying four mafia-affiliated law-firm partners exploded over the Atlantic along with the cushy lives of their once wealthy wives. Now, Krystle fights to keep their fallen law firm afloat. Justine hustles as a lawyer-in-training. Meredith owns and operates the strip club where she once danced. And Camille orchestrates honey-pot schemes for scorned women–until one of her arrangements goes terribly wrong, and she becomes implicated in the debauched Mayor Tom’s mysterious murder in the champagne room. With everything on the line, the widows must join forces once more. But as the conspiracy unravels beyond the mayor's demise, their search for justice pits first wife against second wife and widow against widow. With the widows’ fragile bond now tested, will the women cement their friendships, or is loyalty a luxury they just can’t afford?

In this thrilling expansion of the Widows universe, brimming with sloshed champagne, smeared lipstick, and lethal secrets, Desperate Deadly Widows unfolds as an edge-of-your-seat thriller where desperation wears stilettos, trust is a poker chip, and redemption comes at the cost of everything you thought you knew.

As much as I wanted to love Desperate Deadly Widows, I just couldn’t do it. Over-the-top in a cringe-worthy way, this second book in a series had all four widows feeling like caricatures of girls parading themselves as women. Adding to the disappointment was a plot that—while initially promising—met their unrealistic behavior every step of the way. And while I could easily see the comparisons to Real Housewives and Succession, it still didn’t manage to win me over before I decided to stop reading. At the same time, if you love fast pacing, distinct multiple POVs, or a fun 80s vibe, this book is most definitely for you. After all, there was plenty of laugh-out-loud snark, women supporting women, and complexity to the plot. Unfortunately, though, it just didn’t strike a chord with this thriller lover. Rating of DNF.

Big hair, designer shoes, shoulder pads, over the top attitude, and glamorous ambition can only mean one thing, the widows are back baby! This time someone has put a plan in motion to frame a few of the widows for the mayor’s murder. Motives seem to arrive from every direction in this whodunnit.

Can the ladies unravel the mystery in time?

All things ‘80’s shine in this fun jaunt into the past. When I listened to the first installment, Young Rich Widows, it exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, the second go around lost a little of its magic for me, but there are some welcome additions that balanced out some of the negatives.

The narration of these characters is fantastic! The comedic timing hits its mark in a few moments and had me laughing. I loved the idea of these women becoming more independent and would’ve liked to have seen their business lives explored more, but the growth was nice. The Aidan character’s addition to the series was hands down my favorite aspect of the entire book. His character brought a storyline featuring indigenous culture to the plot which was a fascinating surprise. I could have read an entire novel about his character.

However, the widows felt disconnected from each other. I didn’t believe the bond despite having read the first book. The mystery was obvious and a stronger novel could’ve existed without it.
The way the widows’ friendships with each other were portrayed had me scratching my head. If your friends only show up to support you when you’re in a dire situation, what kind of friends are they? Also they are quick to think the worst of each other. If someone is my friend, they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt. 🤷🏻‍♀️For example Justine is a single mother, law student, working at the widows’ firm, and she lives with her judgmental in-laws. I can’t fathom what her stress level must be. There isn’t a single check-in conversation from one of these women. Each of these women has a difficult situation and you would think there would be at least a scene or two that addresses these facts or shows more of their business lives. They only tend to rush in and defend each other after things get ugly.

What I do love about the widows is their collective grit. They don’t sit around and wait to be rescued. These ladies are resourceful, smart, resilient, and they sure as hell know how to save themselves.

My rating is in the middle with this one, but if the widows decide to ride again, bet that I’ll be looking towards Providence, Rhode Island calling shot gun.

I have to say, as a reader who came into this book rather blind with any of the characters, I appreciate the authors writing this as though it was your first time reading their book. While the authors do refer back to the other story, it’s mainly for clarification and the ties between each of the women so the reader can understand and follow along.

I highly appreciate the fact that each woman and main character in this book was written with extreme clarity and definition as to who that person was. What this means is as you read, you can visualize that person, and you become more attached to the story.

I love that these characters don’t actually seem to “like“ each other but they’re tied to each other because of the other incidents from the first book. They will fiercely protect and support each other, but there aren’t a whole lot of best-friend feelings going around. That can be a good thing.

The plot is very convoluted and leaves you guessing as the authors weave their path of clues for you to follow. The authors do it right by including humor, Snark, attitude, and fierce support for each other. They humanize this story completely for us.

Desperate Deadly Widows is a story of strength and bold women doing whatever it takes to protect each other and their business. A good murder mystery with action and twists to engage and delight.

The four widows return following #1 in the Widows series, Young Rich Widows with #2 the latest thrilling suspense—DESPERATELY DEADLY WIDOWS.

We pick up from the first book with the widows trying to make it in the law firm and a business with some side-off-the-book investigations when one of their own is front and center in a high-profile murder case. The widows must join together to clear their names and find the real murderer.

Edgy, gritty, bold, witty, and suspenseful —a killer audio! There is nothing worse than a desperate widow with nothing to lose!

Set in Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1987, two years after a plane crash carrying four mafia-affiliated law firm partners died. The widows have joined forces to keep the law firm afloat to pay the bills.

Krystle fights to keep their fallen law firm afloat, Justine is in law school soon to become a lawyer at the firm, and Meredith (former striper) has purchased the former Mafia strip club and turned it into an upscale gentleman's Club, The Luna Lounge. It is doing well.

Camille, the southern belle (Sugar), devises a plan to help all the scorned women by tracking down the men and their misdeeds. Terah, the Mayor's current second wife, needed this for risk assessment.

While representing a wife (an off-the-books case), the goal was to tape the Mayor to see if he was up to no good. Camille was to get Mayor Tom in the Club's champagne room; however, before things get started, the Mayor drinks two flutes of champagne and kills over. DEAD!

Camille had not yet tasted the champagne. She is shocked as she uncorked it. Who tampered with the champagne? She did not touch it, but someone put drugs, toxins, or poison in the champagne that caused the murder. But who?

The widows were doing so well, and now this. How will they prove the club or the women were not involved?

Soon, Camille and later Meredith, the club owner, are blamed, and the other widows must stand behind them and begin their sleuthing/investigation to find the real murderer. Meredith, the Luna Lounge owner, caters to the city's most powerful male clients—she had nothing against the mayor.

Who had the motive to murder Mayor Tom? Who is setting them up to take the fall? They need to keep Nancy and her money as a client at the law firm, hire a criminal attorney, and play both sides of the fence with Terah.

Suspects:
The first wife, Nancy. (rich Davenforth family money)
The second younger wife, Terah (has her own money and business)
The son, Harrison
The cocky attorney, Tucker
Any of the strippers or bartenders at the Luna Lounge
Or is it due to the developers who wanted a casino in Providence like Vegas and the tribal land, or the new Paris redevelopment project?
Or someone else?

The widows must again join forces and demonstrate their loyalty to one another. Someone must have been on the inside to put it in the champagne. Who was behind it? Justine, a young mother and law student, gets pulled in, and they all work their investigations to clear their friend before this goes to trial.

They are also trying to play both Nancy and Terah. The authorities shut down the Luna Lounge, affecting livelihoods. Meredith would never be involved in a plot to murder Mayor Tom.

From investigating, property, burial ground, danger, an inheritance, a Paris redevelopment scheme, manipulation, greed, power, a casino, a proposed convention center, tribal land, a doctor, two wives, and a son—The Mayor had enemies. He had land others wanted, and he switched alliances before his death. Who benefits from murdering the Mayor?

Most suspect Terah, the current wife, but she has money. Nancy also comes from money. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to frame Camille and Meredith. Who planted evidence? As the conspiracy unravels in their search for justice, the four must do their part to bring down the murderer.

DESPERATELY DEADLY WIDOWS is even more exciting than the first book. I loved the audiobook!

The women's hilarious personalities will keep you laughing out loud. Nothing will stop the widows! A dazzling, scandalous thriller and I loved the women's friendship and their support for one another while putting their past differences behind them.

From the 80s, big hair, shoulder pads, lipstick, designer shoes and bags, scandal, lies, coverups, murder, conspiracy, legalities, money, drugs, revenge, politics, crime, attorneys, and a fun, lively group of intelligent, independent, and tenacious women who will NOT go down without a fight (against evil)! They are doing it together.

From riveting suspense, twists, and turns, the mystery unfolds when they discover how many are involved in this web of deceit and murder.

What a cast of top-notch authors: Kimberly Belle, Layne Fargo, Cate Holahan, Vanessa Lillie, and talented narrators Dina Pearlman, Karissa Vacker, Helen Laser, and Ariel Blake. A stellar performance, perfect for each voice.

Thank you for this well-written sequel! I hope we see more of The Widows! I would also like to see this in an e-book format, as I enjoyed the Conversations with the Authors & Widows in the last book.

Highly entertaining!

The story flowed well, especially considering four authors wrote the novel.
It was fast paced until the last few chapters.
Then, the story seemed to drag a bit while all the loose ends were being tied up.
Still, it was a fun and easy thriller to read.
I’m looking forward to the next book in this series!

So happy to revisit the world of big shoulder pads, even bigger hair, and endless champagne of the Widows.

All of the narrators were GREAT and really brought the characters to life - my only compliant is that I wish the audiobook had been produced more like a play and each character had been voiced only by their own narrator - so like during the Justine parts, the Justine narrator wasn’t then doing their own version of voices for Krystle, Camille, and Meredith. All of the characters’ voices were so distinctive it felt weird to hear them done differently when it wasn’t their chapter. And maybe get one dude in there to do all of the male voices (?) because then there were multiple versions of those bouncing around in my head.

That said, this was a super entertaining listen, and my fingers are crossed for more Widow books from these four talented authors!

I’ve enjoyed many of the audio-only books and Young Rich Widows was a particularly fun one. It was so popular that it is now in print with a release date of April 2, 2024. The all female writing team of Kimberly Belle, Layne Fargo, Kate Holahan and Vanessa Lillie are once again paired with the all female narration team of Dina Pearlman, Karissa Vacker, Helen Laser and Ariel Blake for Desperate Deadly Widows.

If you enjoyed the first one, you will likely enjoy this one too. I did prefer the first one, but that’s usually the case with a series. Entertaining with a great cast.

🍿 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴: I loooove The Widows series, and I’m thrilled this gang of female authors decided to write them. Desperate Deadly Widows is a rip-roaring good time that starts with the death of a mayor and ends with the perfect last chapter.

🤩 𝚃͏𝚑͏𝚎͏ 𝙱͏𝚎͏𝚜͏𝚝͏ 𝙱͏𝚒͏𝚝͏𝚜͏: Anyone looking for a campy ‘80s read that is both entertaining and highly unique will find that here. It is best to read this series in order for maximum enjoyment and to see how the widow’s relationships and lives progress. I love the way Belle, Fargo, Holahan, & Lillie can write such a fun drama-filled book that still has plenty of serious moments and important topics. The characters really stand out, and the whodunnit was one I didn’t see coming!

🎧 𝒜𝓊𝒹𝒾𝑜𝒷𝑜𝑜𝓀 𝒩𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃: I would say the second best thing about this series is the audiobooks, and once again Dina Pearlman, Karissa Vacker, Helen Laser, & Ariel Blake slayed their narration together. I love the full cast to give Krystle, Meredith, Camille, and Justine each a unique voice and this bunch is a true powerhouse of talent.

💭 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴: Desperate Deadly Widows is over-the-top in the best possible way and reading it was a bit like watching a reality tv show. Secrets and drama are prevalent, and these widows manage to get up to a lot throughout the course of the book. It was an utter delight to experience, and the pace is so quick you gotta be careful you don’t get whiplash. Highly recommend!

Thank you to Sourcebooks for the early electronic arc via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Book 2 in the The Widows series helmed by multiple authors. It's been a bit since the plane crash that took the lives of the husbands of said widows. Now they are scrambling to support themselves and in some cases, children and businesses left behind by their crooked attorney husband's deaths. This outing sees the women being framed for the murder of the town Mayor while a fight for Indigenous land and what will be built upon it rages in the background.

What I liked was the 1980's time frame backdrop. The mention of cell phones had me googling if they were even available back then. They were! Huge and known as bricks, but available. Of course, the shoulder pads and descriptions of hair were a fun throwback for me.

I also appreciated the plight of the indigenous people and who ultimately controls their land.

Entertaining enough but I'm thinking I should have read book one first. I found myself not able to connect to the characters as much without that background.

Thank you Sourcebooks for the gifted digital ARC!

It was so fun to be back in the world of the widows. I found this one pretty predictable but I still enjoyed how the story progressed, and I think it's so fun that each author writes each of our characters. If you've ever wondered which author wrote which character, I tracked that info down for you:

Layne Fargo - Meredith
Kimberly Belle - Camille
Cate Holahan - Justine
Vanessa Lillie - Krystal

I'm impressed that even with this many authors contributing to the book, the writing is smooth and not at all clunky. I would not be one bit mad to revisit these characters again in the future!

Another wild and crazy ride with these widows. This time one and then another is accused of murder. Of course, the widows need to solve the murder which insures that the reader will be well entertained. I noticed that one reviewer had not read the first book in this series. She found it confusing to keep everyone straight. I can definitely see that this would be a problem. This is not a stand alone and should not be read that way. If you haven’t read the first, start there and, I promise, you will want to read this one too!

This was a great follow up to Young Rich Widows! The widows have settled into their new roles trying to move in without their spouses but they all have their struggles. When the mayor drops dead, the widows are scrambling for answers and alibis. The 80s vibe is a lot of fun and gave me flashbacks to my teens with big hair, shoulder pads, and Chrysler LeBaron cars. There were many hilarious passages in this book along with a more serious side. I enjoyed the found family story and appreciated the inclusion of indigenous people and land protection.

The widows are back, with big shoulder pads and even bigger attitudes! This is such a fun series and the narration is fantastic, I loved the whole production of both books, each of the widows had their own unique voice and witty banter!

This book starts with a bang two years on from the events in the first book, the mayor is murdered at Meredith’s strip club and another one of the Widows is prime suspect!

For me this book wasn’t as good as book one but was still a decent follow up!

Desperate Deadly Widows marks the triumphant return of our favorite quartet of unlikely allies in this sequel to the bestselling Young Rich Widows. Set in the vibrant landscape of 1987 Providence, Rhode Island, this collaboration between authors Kimberly Belle, Layne Fargo, Cate Holahan, and Vanessa Lillie delivers a champagne cocktail of intrigue, murder, and sisterhood that fizzes with '80s excess while packing a serious emotional punch.

Two years after their husbands' fiery demise in a plane explosion over the Atlantic, our widows have reinvented themselves through necessity and grit. No longer the pampered wives of successful (if morally questionable) attorneys, they're now navigating a world where financial independence comes at a steep price. What makes this sequel so compelling is seeing how each woman has evolved while remaining faithful to her core character—their edges sharper, their bonds tested, and their loyalty to one another the only constant in their tumultuous lives.

Four Widows, Four Distinct Voices

One of the novel's greatest strengths is how each widow feels like a fully-realized character with her own motivations, flaws, and growth arc. The authors—each writing from the perspective of a single widow—create a seamless tapestry where different writing styles complement rather than compete with one another.

- Camille (written by Kimberly Belle) has transformed her Southern charm and manipulative skills into a lucrative honey-pot business, catching philandering husbands for wealthy wives seeking leverage in divorce proceedings. Her character journey from self-serving schemer to fiercely loyal friend continues beautifully in this installment, culminating in her unexpected romance with Aiden, a man entirely different from her usual type.

- Meredith (Layne Fargo) has come full circle from stripper to club owner, fighting to maintain the Luna Lounge as a safe, professional workspace for her dancers while battling the entrenched sexism of 1980s Providence. Her no-nonsense pragmatism cuts through the chaos as she finds herself framed for murder after Mayor Tom dies in her club's champagne room.

- Krystle (Vanessa Lillie) remains the heart of the operation, desperately trying to keep the remains of her late husband's law firm afloat while managing her wayward son Rom. Her journey from hair-trigger anger to measured leadership showcases some of the novel's most authentic character development.

- Justine (Cate Holahan) continues her transformation from sheltered housewife to ambitious law student, though her desire for security and status nearly leads her down a dangerous path with Harrison Davenforth. Her struggle to balance motherhood, career ambitions, and loyalty to her makeshift family resonates deeply.

'80s Atmosphere That Pops Off the Page

The authors nail the 1987 setting with details that transport readers without becoming distracting. From the "power suits with shoulder pads the size of dinner plates" to cassette players and references to "Material Girl," the novel weaves in period details that enhance rather than overwhelm the narrative. The economic realities of the late '80s feature prominently—the widening wealth gap, gentrification, and the commodification of urban spaces all factor into the plot.

What's particularly effective is how the book captures the paradox of the decade: the glamorous excess popularized by shows like "Dynasty" contrasted with the hard economic realities faced by most Americans. Our widows straddle this divide, reaching for wealth and security while grounded in the practical challenges of making it in a man's world.

A Twisty Plot That Keeps the Pages Turning

When Mayor Tom Bradley drops dead in the champagne room during one of Camille's sting operations, the novel kicks into high gear. What follows is a perfectly executed thriller where alliances shift, motives multiply, and danger lurks at every turn. The plot moves between:

- Camille becoming a murder suspect and scrambling to clear her name
- Meredith facing arrest and imprisonment for a crime she didn't commit
- Krystle attempting to salvage their law firm as clients flee
- Justine falling under the spell of Harrison Davenforth and his powerful mother Nancy

The result is a delicious slow-burn mystery where pieces click satisfyingly into place as the widows uncover a conspiracy reaching to the highest levels of Providence society.

Strengths That Shine

The greatest triumph of Desperate Deadly Widows is how it balances outrageous '80s camp with genuine emotional depth. Moments of hilarity (like Krystle accidentally performing a surprise striptease to distract club patrons) sit alongside poignant character revelations. The novel never sacrifices its characters' humanity on the altar of plot, maintaining a perfect balance between the two.

The book also excels at exploring the theme of chosen family. These women have little in common beyond their shared trauma, yet they've formed bonds stronger than blood. Their loyalty to one another—even when tested by suspicion and misunderstanding—forms the novel's emotional core.

Another standout element is the book's exploration of class and privilege in 1980s America. The stark contrast between the Davenforths' Newport estate and the struggling neighborhoods of Providence illustrates the economic realities of Reagan's America without becoming heavy-handed.

A Few Minor Stumbles

While Desperate Deadly Widows is a thrilling ride, it occasionally suffers from pacing issues. The middle section, where the widows investigate separately, sometimes drags before reuniting them for the explosive finale. Some readers might find the number of supporting characters overwhelming, particularly in the early chapters where it becomes challenging to keep track of everyone's connections.

A few plot points strain credulity, even for a story embracing heightened '80s tropes. The widows' ability to escape dangerous situations sometimes relies more on convenient timing than plausible action. Additionally, while most antagonists receive nuanced treatment, a few drift into cartoonish territory, particularly Dr. Hendricks with his pill-pushing ways.

The Davenforth Dynasty: Compelling Antagonists

What elevates this thriller above genre conventions is its complex antagonists. The Davenforth family—particularly matriarch Nancy—represent old-money WASP power with all its attendant prejudice and entitlement. Nancy's "Paris of the Northeast" redevelopment plan symbolizes the callous gentrification that would reshape American cities throughout the '80s and '90s, displacing communities for profit.

The authors deftly contrast this establishment influence with Aiden's connection to his Narragansett heritage, introducing nuanced discussions of land rights and cultural preservation rarely seen in commercial thrillers. Tara Jordan, the mayor's second wife and finance shark, represents new money challenging old institutions, creating a fascinating power triangle that drives much of the plot.

Final Verdict: An Addictive, Satisfying Sequel

Desperate Deadly Widows delivers everything fans of the first book could want while expanding the series' scope and emotional depth. The cocktail of '80s extravagance, genuine character development, and twisty thriller plotting creates a reading experience as addictive as it is satisfying. While it functions perfectly as a standalone novel, readers familiar with Young Rich Widows will appreciate the continued character arcs and references to the original story.

Desperate Deadly Widows is the 2nd book featuring four women whose attorney husbands were killed when their plane exploded, leaving the women to run their shady law firm. Determined to change the firm’s image and save it from going under, the widows get involved with a prominent family in Rhode Island who are trying to secure a land deal. But when one of the widows is arrested for the murder of the town’s mayor, they once again band together to prove her innocence. This is basically a whodunnit, with the widows investigating the.murder, trying to find the real murderer. The plot’s a little murky, with lots of characters to keep track of and just as many side plots, and that tends to dampen any tension as the reader tries to unravel all the threads. The allure of this series is the banter between the widows as they try to overcome their distrust for each other and keep the firm afloat. No new ground broken here, but the interaction between the widows as they navigate rough waters is worth the read. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’m obsessed with this series!

Desperate Deadly Widows is the perfect follow-up to Young Rich Widows. These books are FUN. They have the girl power vibe of the Finley Donovan books, which I loved. I’m an 80s girl so I love, love, love all the 80s references. I hope they keep writing this series because I will keep reading it.

The widows are back… I just love the 80’s vibe and it’s so interesting how the characters are all written by a different author and how the story just flows perfectly. The widows are trying to keep the practice going and then the mayor ends up dead on the club Meredith owns with Camille it’s a crazy fun ride as the widows need to save themselves and find out who did it before it’s too late

✨What it is about:
Set in Providence, Rhode Island in 1987, two years after a plane carrying four mafia-affiliated law firm partners exploded, this story follows the wives of the men who died in the plane crash, and how they try to keep their law firm afloat.✨

💭My thoughts:
This was so much FUN. This is book two in The Widows Series, an edge of your seat thriller that explores how the widows work together trying to make it in the law firm business and pay their bills, all while in the middle of a murder investigation involving one of their own. The women’s personalities are wild, and their friendship though a little distant at times, shows them to be ride or dies when it matters most. Their mutual support knows no bounds. With so much snark and attitude, these girls are in it to win it, and no one is stopping them! They will do it all, and no scandal, no scheming can get past them…they are set to get to the bottom of things and will prevail, so you better get out of their way if you know what’s good for you. They are smart, resourceful and bold, and will do whatever it takes to protect each other which I loved to see (women supporting women 💪). This story was full of twists and turns, and super entertaining. I definitely recommend it.

Thank you to @bookmarked for my free copy of this book!

When I first got this, I didn’t realize it was the second in the series, and while I was pretty sure I’d be okay reading it as a standalone, I decided to go back and read Young Rich Widows first. I LOVED it and couldn’t wait to dive into this one!

This one can be read by itself, but I’d highly recommend going back and reading the first book because the dynamics between the characters really will make more sense and I think will add to the enjoyment of this story!

After two books, I have fallen in love with all four widows, each in their own unique way. I love the idea of four authors writing a book, with each one taking a different character and developing their character’s arc/story.

This book is twisty, campy, and humorous. It does not take itself too seriously at all. Yet I love the relationships the characters come to develop through shared loss and experience, and there are some tender moments sprinkled in throughout.

The plot kept me very interested and entertained and I certainly wouldn’t have predicted how the ending happened. This one is for sure a fun ride and I think people will love it so far as they don’t go into it taking it too seriously and are willing to suspend some belief!

It’s 1987, the era of big hair and shoulder pads, and 2 years after a plane crash made 4 women widows. Now, the Widows are back running businesses like the bosses they are! The Mayor is murdered. Then one widow is accused, then another. They band together and end up putting themselves in peril before ultimately solving the mystery.

This is a follow up to Young Rich Widows. Even though I haven’t read the first book, the authors did a wonderful job of merging the two books. I really didn’t feel lost and followed this story fairly easy, and it definitely made me add YRW to my list to get more background and understanding. Each chapter is dedicated to a different character, written by a popular thriller writer. I did have an issue at the beginning keeping the women straight, but by a few chapters in, I had it all figured out. This was such a fun read that had me quickly turning the pages. I loved their big personalities, watching them come into their own, taking back their lives. The authors note at the end hint at more adventures for these women. I look forward to continuing on their journey.

Thanks to NetGalley and SourcebooksLandmark for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.

Young Rich Widows was in my top 10 last year, and this will definitely make my top 10 this year! It was so good, and I absolutely loved it!

Providence, RI, 1987. It has been two years since the plane carrying mafia-affiliated law partners blew up over the Atlantic, leaving four women used to cushy lives—widows fending for themselves. Krystale is trying to keep the law firm afloat. Justine is going to school to finish her law degree so she can join the practice. Meredith now owns and operates the strip club, and Camille has become a PI to catch cheating husbands in the act. Everything seems to be working out until one of Camille's schemes goes terribly wrong in the champagne room of Meredith's club. Mayor Tom has dropped dead, and Camille was the last one to see him alive. The widows must work together to find out what really happened. Between his two ex-wives and the people who hated him, it could have been anyone! Will they be able to get past their differences and find out what really happened?

Each chapter offers a unique perspective from one of the four widows: Krystale, Meredith, Justine, and Camille. The women are unique and bring something different to the group. I seriously love them all! This book is highly entertaining, incredibly engaging, and once you start it, you won't want to put it down! The mystery is intriguing, and the drama will keep you hooked! It's twisty, sharp, and so much fun to read! I seriously can't recommend this book enough!🩷 I'm really hoping for another book!

The widows have returned—and what a wildly entertaining follow-up this is! This writing team continues to prove they’re an absolute powerhouse. Four authors, four widows—the concept remains as fresh and compelling as ever.

Set against a delightfully nostalgic 1980s backdrop—think shoulder pads, big hair, and unapologetic sass—this gritty yet witty mystery delivers on every front.

What I love most is the dynamic between the women: they may not always see eye to eye, but when it matters, they come together with fierce determination. It’s a sharp, empowering story of unlikely sisterhood and found family.

An exceptional sequel—smart, stylish, and full of bite.

Desperate Deadly Widows is the second book of The Widows series, following Young Rich Widows. I read it as a standalone and enjoyed it so much that I went and bought Young Rich Widows!
I loved everything about this book- the 80s setting, the big haired shoulder-pad wearing diva widows, the mystery and suspense after the mayor is murdered.. loved it all! I appreciated that each woman had a different personality yet meshed so well with each other. Definitely a captivating read!
Thank you NetGalley, Sourcebooks Landmark, Vanessa Lillie, Layne Fargo, Cate Holahan, and Kimberly Belle for this one!

A combination of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum with the women of Sex and the City and The Sopranos (mixed media, but appropriate). The Widows return to continue to manage their law firm and strip joint (great combination) amidst the poisoning death of a big client/politico, the departure of a rainmaking attorney from the law firm, and a threat to the destruction of the strip club. It's cheesy fun with lots of 80's references to neon, shoulder pads, and hoop earrings which I think are all back in style now . The audio is perfectly voiced by four different narrators, one for each character and I have to admit that the gravelly voice of rough talking Krystle is my favorite voice and character. So yes, you get to play which one are you, like on Sex and the City with this book, too.

Although the story realistically deserves 3 stars, widows hold a special place in my heart, and I can't bring myself to give them less than 4. Fun, flashy, and unfuckwithable, they represent the popular glam of the '80s through the lens of modern opinions. The story is quite simple and predictable, but it brings comfort and warmth. The narrators are excellent, and I even found Krystal more enjoyable than in the first book!

Spunky fun! I truly enjoy the widow books, although I can't pick a favorite. The ladies doing the narration are amazing and different enough that when you hear them you know which widow is talking. If we could all have friendships like this, the literal ride or die kind. This is a romp from high society all the way down to murder in a strip club. Hopefully there will be another installment to this series. Happy Listening!
