I met Emma at a book event in my hometown in the beginning of 2025. I was very excited to read this book after hearing her pitch, but I didn't read it untill now.
I'm very sorry Emma, but this book was very poorly written. It felt like it was written by a 12 year old who loved to put exclamation marks after every sentence and loved to start every sentence using "I". To be honest, I should have DNF'ed, but I kept on reading to give a justified review.
As said above, there were a lot of troubles with the exclamation marks and the use of 'I'. But more importantly, the story was very off and contradicted itself A LOT. Not to mention the constant changes of lay-out and the choice of how the author would make inner thoughts clear (at first in cursive, next between apostrophes). The writing was very basic and felt like it was written for 12 year olds. Also there were A LOT of typos and words that were written in Dutch and not translated to English. The pace was too fast and everything they needed to go right just went too easy. The stakes of the story were too low and there was no suspense at all.
Probably made myself clear to state that I will not be continuing this series. I read the very first print of the book, after doing some research I see the author republished with her own publishing agency. Maybe she corrected the story, but I won't know for sure.
Initially, I was really excited about this book! Reading the summary, it seemed like a story with a lot of potential. But sadly I wasn’t able to finish the book… it wasn’t written fluently, kind of clear it wasn’t written in her native language. Very basic English, so I’d recommend the writer to take more writing and English classes or consider writing in her native language.
The storyline had a lot of potential, but the quality really decreased because of the writing style and language. Unnecessary sentences, storyline going too fast, not a lot of excitement, very predictable, a lot of empty words like “anyway” and “very” which made it hard to read, way more exclamation marks then necessary, a lot of usage of “I”, …
I’m very sorry Emma, cause after speaking to you at Facts, I was very excited to read this. I think you have a lot of potential because the storyline was cool, but I also think you still have a long way to go/grow. I do wish you the best of luck and hope you’ll get there in the end! 🐸
