The Version You Hide

Rate this book
An empowered survivor. An optimist risking it all...

Things haven't always been easy for Mackenzie Riley. Having grown up on the proverbial wrong side of the tracks with the absence of parental guidance, she'd quickly become entangled in the twisted web wound by her abusive criminal ex-boyfriend.

Now residing in Cliff Haven with her half-sister, Mackenzie wants nothing more than to put her old life behind her and start over. But after a chance encounter with a stranger, she soon learns that no matter how desperate she is to shut the book on the past, some chapters won't stay closed.

Dylan Abbott is the epitome of positivity. Or at least that's how it appears on the surface. Little do the customers of the rustic seaside tavern he runs know, this charming, carefree surfer leads a double-life, with obstacles of his own to overcome. But his unwavering passion for a life of adventure and sunshiny disposition are no match for Mackenzie's pessimistic attitude and sassy one-liners.

The last thing she needs in her life is a man, but after one fake date for his overbearing parent's benefit that exposes his deeper side, Dylan quickly weaves his way under Mackenzie's skin.

But after everything she's been through, can Mackenzie learn to confide in a man with so many secrets?

And will Dylan's father threaten to ruin it all?

"The Version You Hide is a story of learning to live again and a reminder that family can be found in the most unlikely of places."

(arc received in exchange for an honest review)

⁤’the version you hide’ by eve blakely is one of those books from a series that tend to stick with you. ⁤⁤it talks about the parts of ourselves we keep tucked away, even from the people closest to us. ⁤⁤
blakely has a way of making you feel seenᅳlike she's talking directly to the version of you that doesn't always show up in the world. ⁤⁤
the characters feel real, their struggles with identity and truth as well as deeply rooted traumas are things we've all dealt with in one way or another. ⁤⁤it is a simple story, but it hits deep, reminding us how important it is to be honest with ourselves and not be afraid to let others help you. ⁤⁤
while this book felt like a hug, it will probably make you think about who you really are beneath the surface. ⁤

i think it’s safe to say i have fallen head over heels with this author and i am so thankful i was given the opportunity to review a book ahead of its release. i’ll be waiting for her other novels in the future.

oh and ‘matilda’ by harry styles is SO mackenzie coded.

Tropes:
💙 Reverse grumpy x sunshine
💙 Found family
💙 Small Town romance
💙 He falls first
💙 Mental health rep
💙 Dual POV
💙 Closed Door
"You're safe with me, Kenz. Always."
"I've never really known what home feels like, but I guess, I'd say this is it. It's him."

💙 This was such a sweet story. I'm a huge fan of the found family trope, and this book did it so well. Dylan is the epitome of a perfect book boyfriend. I love him for Mackenzie so much. I did feel like the ending dragged a little for me, maybe because I found it a little predictable. Either way, I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to my mom. She would love this book!

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy by the incredible Eve for her upcoming release, The Version You Hide 🩵🐢

”Sometimes we don’t need to forgive someone to release them from their demons. We do it to free ourselves from our own.”

A wonderful, heartwarming story about overcoming demons, learning to trust, finding hope, and pursuing a life you want to live.

I don’t want to spoil too much if you’re yet to read. But here’s a few bits I loved:
♾️ Dylan and Mackenzie gave total soulmate energy.
🐾 I want a Chance and I want a beach house, and I also want to go snorkelling with turtles really effing badly.
📖 You could find Dylan’s name under Patience in the dictionary. He really understood the assignment that was Mackenzie.
🎨 Betty and May were the best addition.
💪🏼 I wanted to crawl into the pages and hug Mackenzie. But her strength, wow. I was really proud of her character.
✌🏻 Dual POV and I loved both of their voices equally.
🌧️ Sometimes, a rainy day, makes for the brightest day.
🤲🏻 The ending on found family, was perfect.

”Family doesn’t always mean the one you’re born into. It’s finding the ones who will stand by you, unflinching, even in your darkest times. It’s cuddles with a stray dog during a thunderstorm. It’s chocolate chip pancakes on a rainy day. It’s finally finding a place where you belong.”

You did them such justice, Eve. I loved it.

I have read all three books in six days, while working full time and being sick. If that doesn’t tell you how much I loved and recommend The Cliff Haven series, I dunno what will. The Version You Hide is live on August 13 so get reading.

the found family trope is one of my absolute favorites and it melts my heart and makes me wanna sob every time. Kenz has been through so much and i’m so glad she was able to get her happy ending with Dylan and everyone she now gets to call family. it was such a beautifully written story and i loved it so much.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Kenz has a bucket tonne of trauma to deal with, Dylan is charmingly patient & understanding all while dealing with his own (family) demons.
Great story of overcoming life & learning to love self, while allowing others in & beginning to trust again.
Love the end paragraph about what Family is 🥰

Eve! What a beautiful story. I knew I was going to love this one! Not just because I loved the first two in this series but because of who this story was about.

Mackenzie has had such a hard life. With an alcoholic father, a mother who abandoned her and an abusive past relationship it isn’t easy for her to open up to another person. Dylan wasn’t a part of her plans… but when he became her boss at the tavern she started really enjoying being around him.

This story has so much more depth than your typical romance. It is so beautifully written and will definitely pull at the readers heartstrings. We see Mackenzie work through her past hurts and struggles and decide to rise above to create a brighter future for herself. Dylan is just the perfect person for her. I loved the way they complimented each other. He was such a calming protective presence for her, which was beautiful because she never had that before.

One thing I love about series is that you can see the continuation of past couples. Like I mentioned before I loved the first two books in this series. So, it was so much fun to see these characters come to life again.

Thank you so much Eve for this #gifted copy. I adored this story so much! 😍

Okay let me start off saying I received this as an ARC and went in having no idea what this series was about. So I went back to read the rest of the series first and OMG. I loved every single second of this roller coaster. Such a sweet story and so relatable. I LOVED Mackenzie and Dylan so much. If you're in a book slump this will literally get you out of it. All 3 stories were so good but I think this one was my favorite. Eve, please keep writing and keep the books coming I will read them all.

This was a beautifully written, captivating story and about accepting your past and dealing with the demons you heal for yourself.

It drew me in like the rest of the books in the series and I couldn’t wait for more. It was a heartbreaking yet heartwarming story 🩷

I’ve really love this reading! There’s a lot of difficult topics covered in this book, but it is done with lightness and a beautiful love story. The vibe of Cliff Haven is really great with the beach house and the diving. I fell in love with the character of Dylan. He is such an optimist and there’s a lot of green flag in this relationship. With this amazing story, it is sure that I’m gonna add the other books of the series on my tbr.

Closed door romance

Opposites attract in this small town romance about two people trying to find happiness and love, despite the hardships they’ve faced.

Eve Blakely has a way of drawing me into her stories with her beautiful writing and intriguing storylines. The Version You Hide was a great addition to the Cliff Haven Series. This book had angst, romance, character cameos and a MMC who just wanted to love the FMC🥹

Overall, I like how Mackenzie forces us to think twice about the assumptions society makes about people in abusive relationships. I also love how Dylan becomes a safe space for her to land and for her to open up, even though this is the last thing she’d thought she’d ever do. I’m nothing if not a sucker for a romance plot-line following a shitty relationship.

I also like how Dylan sees Mackenzie & how she starts to see herself & her life more positively the more time she spends with this optimistic mans🫶.

I do find that the last 25% of this book fell kind of flat for me. The “twist” was predictable and ends were tied up a bit TOO perfectly for me. I can’t really be too mad about that though considering we got such a strong character evolution for Mackenzie. The abusive relationship and Mackenzie’s healing were treated with the respect they deserve. However, I think I was expecting a bit more in terms of the emotional fallout, recovery and the way that this played out in her relationship with Dylan.

Overall, this is a beautiful closed door romance about two people who are a perfect match.

If you like:
⛵️ Reverse grumpy x sunshine
⛵️ Small town romance
⛵️ Mental health representation
⛵️ Characters pursuing their dreams despite complex family dynamics
⛵️ Dual pov closed door romance

Then this one is for you♥️

“There she is. There’s the real Mackenzie Riley.” 🌊

First and foremost I want to thank Eve Blakely for giving me the opportunity to read this book before it’s release! 🫶🏻 I loved this book! Mackenzie intrigued me in Versions of Us (which if you haven’t read I recommend)! Mackenzie as a character is so complex and has so many layers and over the course of the book readers really get to see her walls fall and she finally lets not only Dylan in but also Kristen and the other people in her life in. The twist of Grace is amazing (you have to read to find out 😉) Dylan is a golden retriever in human form and he is so patient and understanding with Mackenzie’s reactions and reservations when it comes to relationships! I also love that he helps her when it comes to her family issues and listens to her and gives her space to feel the things she’s feeling! I loved the little cameos of Kristen and Henley and Liv. In regard to spice there are 2-3 closed door scenes and it was very well done! 🌶️ Overall, I highly recommend this book and will be reading Eve Blakely in the future! 💚🫶🏻

Mackenzie Riley is a resilient young woman who has endured a difficult past, including the absence of her parents and years in an abusive relationship with a criminal ex-boyfriend. After escaping, she now lives in Cliff Haven with her half-sister, seeking a fresh start and trying to leave her painful history behind. Though she prefers to keep to herself, a chance encounter with a stranger makes her realize she can't fully escape her past. Struggling with trust, she surprises herself by opening up to her boss, Dylan Abbott, who also seeks to break free from the family business. Will Mackenzie and Dylan be able to overcome their pasts and embrace new futures? Read to find out!

Eve Blakely writes contemporary romance novels with an edge. The writing is exceptional however what I loved most about this novel is that the prologue starts off as a cliff hanger that keeps you engaged the whole time as you want to resolve the mystery from the beginning! This was such an emotional read but that ends in a happy ending! Highly recommend to read this book!

Many thanks to Eve for providing me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This was a really heartwarming and cosy romance, following Dylan and Mackenzie. It has a grumpy sunshine, opposites attract feel, and a slow burn romance that grows so naturally.
I loved their chemistry, their fun banter working at the bar together, and how they both help each other.
It's a closed door romance, with lots of family drama, some fake dating, recovery and healing from loss and trauma, and some unexpected twists.
It's a story full of hope, patience, building trust, letting yourself love again, and forgiveness.
It also had some great side characters and animal companions.
I loved the picturesque small coastal town vibe, and the sense of community and found family. This is a cosy and emotional read.

⛵ "She doesn't want my pity. Or anyone's for that matter. She doesn't need it."

⛵ "She may be vulnerable, but she's also the strongest woman I've ever met. A fighter"

⛵ "This kiss isn't like the last. It's patient. It's comfort and protection. And about a hundred other things I could never put into words. It's more. It's a promise"

⛵ "We're both trying to start afresh... And we're both running from things that have consumed us"

⛵"Family. My heart used to ache hearing the word, but now I realise that family isn't just one thing. Family means unconditionally loving someone in spite of their flaws"

*I received an E-ARC of this book for free in exchange for an honest review* - Thank you @eveblakelywrites!

I absolutely love the cover of this book! I have never seen one like it before. The Version You Hide is Book 3 in an interconnected series, so you don’t need to read the previous books to follow along but it does enhance the reading experience. There is also a playlist, which we love! The Version You Hide gives the perfect coastal summer vibes. Summer is not over yet, so now is the perfect time to read this book! Personally, I feel like the book is more character driven than plot driven because it feels more about characters than plot but I still enjoyed going along for the ride. If you like the miscommunication trope, this is the book for you! Overall, The Version You Hide is a sweet romance with some tough topics and character growth.

If you like reverse grumpy x sunshine, fake dating and dual POV, you should give The Version You Hide a try!

This book is heartwarming. It's sweet, it's a comfort story to pull you out of a slump. And it did just that for me.

Dylan and Mackenzie's story is emotional, it's powerful and downright adorable.

Dylan is the sweetest, kindest soul who anyone would be lucky to call a friend. He gained Mackenzie's trust just by being himself. By showing you can be vulnerable and strong at the same time.

Eve's writing is fabulous. The romantic scenes are written so well, they never give me the ick like many books have before. Yes there is not much spice, very little infact but the story and characters make up for that.

I loved the character growth with Dylan's father, with Harper and obviously with Mackenzie herself.

It didn't pull me in quite as much as Versions of Us did, however it's still a 5 star read for me for being so heartwarming.

I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this, I love how much Dylan was willing to listen and just be there for Mackenzie when she was going through troubles. There was so much communication throughout and no misunderstanding which is what I find you get sometimes in most romance books so that was really refreshing.

I also like how some other romance tropes weren’t in it either, as I find most romance fiction follow an outline but this was really one in itself and made it that more special to read for me.

Slight bias as Dylan nicknames Mackenzie “Kenz” which is the nickname only my partner calls me and is really rare to see in a book!

I was hooked on this one by the prologue! I loved being back in cliff haven for the third instalment of the series.
I love these characters so much! Dylan was such a sweetheart and I loved how much of a rock he was for Mackenzie.
Mackenzie put up high walls around herself because of being hurt in the past but she was so strong! I loved seeing her let her guard down with Dylan.
The found family in this was just everything! And the small town vibes and community!

I have been looking forward to reading the last installment of the Cliff Haven series and it did not disappoint! Eve writes the most gorgeous books, very raw and real, and you definitely go through all the emotions reading them. She also writes characters that you can't help but love. Watch out for Betty in this one, bringing the comedy and some light relief. An absolute class character and definitely worthy of a mention. Dylan is quite literally the definition of 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚. He just gets Mackenzie so much without much word. 💖

Genre: Contemporary Romance

This is the third book in the Cliff Haven series, which is a series of interconnected stand alones, though I would highly recommend reading at least Book 2 first (but seriously read them all!). Our FMC, Mackenzie, has not had the best upbringing. She has had no parental guidance and a traumatic past with an ex-boyfriend (check your triggers!). Luckily, now living in Cliff Haven she is ready for a fresh start. She has a job working at the local tavern owned by Dylan. Mackenzie is making friends and living a calmer life, enjoying the best she can while still working through some PTSD and trust issues. Dylan is an optimistic, loves life type of guy. He comes from a well-to-do family, but he has rejected that life. He loves owning the bar, fixing up a boat, and leading scub diving tours. He is intrigued by Mackenzie and thinks she is great. He knows her history and what she has been through and wants to be there for her. Dylan and Mackenzie build a sweet friendship first based on trust and patience and it grows from there.

I have said it before, but I love a third or further book in a small town romance series because it really does just feel like coming home. It is so cozy and makes me so happy to be back with my favorite characters and familiar places. This series is so wonderfully written as well. In this book, I loved Dylan. Eve Blakely said it best in her social media when she said Dylan is "a 10, but... nope....he's just a ten". He really is! Such a kind, genuine good guy. I loved that and I especially loved that for Mackenzie who has just been through so much. She really needed him. They are paired so well together. This is a closed door romance FYI, so I highly recommend this book regardless, but definitely note it if that is something you prefer in a romance. The character growth, also especially for Mackenzie, was wonderful. I love to see characters who experience trauma to heal over time in a healthy way in books. Eve Blakely takes such care with her mental health representation and healing (it was something I really remembered from Book 2 also). I am hoping Harper gets a book in Cliff Haven soon, but I am looking forward to reading whatever Eve Blakely puts out in the meantime!!

Thank you Eve Blakely for the opportunity to read this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Family.
My heart used to ache hearing the word, but now I realise that family isn’t just one thing.
Family means unconditionally loving someone in spite of their flaws.
It means having a soft place to land. A light in the dark. A safe haven from the storm.
Family doesn’t always mean the one you’re born into. It’s finding the ones who will stand by you, unflinching, even in your darkest times.
It’s cuddles with a stray dog during a thunderstorm. It’s chocolate chip pancakes on a rainy day.
It’s finally finding a place where you belong.
Family isn’t just one thing.
No.
It’s everything.

I was lucky to receive an ARC of Eve Blakely's newest book, The Version You Hide (book three in the Cliff Haven Romance Series). It follows the story of Mackenzie and Dylan.

Eve has such a way with words that she can pull you into the story and hold you captive. The Version You Hide was so beautifully written. Her writing has a way of making you feel seen. It feels like she is talking directly to the version of yourself that does not always show up in the world.

I loved Mackenzie and Dylan's story and thought they were perfect together!

I was not expecting to feel such a roller coaster of emotions while reading this book!

Mackenzie has been through absolute hell, and my heart broke for her many times. I cannot imagine what that must have been like for her to experience, but I am in awe of her strength after everything she has endured.

I loved seeing her growth throughout the book. You see her come into her own, thanks to Dylan earning her trust and supporting her. He showed her what it means to be loved and to be someone's first choice.

Dylan was the perfect book boyfriend. The way he was with Mackenzie was everything. He saw her, really saw her which made me fall in love with him. That man has a heart of gold and the patience of a saint. The way Dylan was there for her and became her safe space just melted my heart. Where can I get myself a man like Dylan?

I cannot wait to see what Eve comes out with next!

Thank you so much to Eve Blakely for this ARC 💙

"You're not him." She gasps the words out.
It doesn't take a genius to guess who she had mistaken me for. Her ex has put her through more than any person deserves to go through. A few choice words come to mind when I think of him, but she doesn't need to hear those right now. She needs my reassurance. To know that she is safe. Her mind has gone somewhere dark, and I need to bring her back to me. "I'd never hurt you, Kenz."

HOW DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING?! While not sobbing per se, but why is it EVE BLAKELY that gets me worked up 😭 This was an absolutely gorgeous read, a bit lighter than the other two but still with its fair share of heavy undertones. Discussion of abuse and toxic relationships (romantic and familial) occur with minor conversation about parental death and cancer. While these are daunting topics, I PROMISE they are fitting for the plot and character development. AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND?! I'm so proud of Mackenzie and her growth from book 2 when we meet her - she is witty and feisty but has so much care for the ones she loves, especially helpful for Dylan who appreciates the spontaneity with frustrating parents trying to control his future. These two brought such a light into Cliff Haven, definitely having more of a comedic side than the other 2 books.

But bring on book 4 ; )

I love love love how this series just keeps continuing to pick up from the previous book because I am still swooning over EJ and Liv and then add in Henley and Kristen and now we get to add Mackenzie and Dylan! I also really love how each character is completely different and has different battles/stories. There’s just something so special about this series I think about it allllll the time.

Mackenzie has unfortunately dealt with some traumatic upbringings. The way her story unfolds made my heart ache for her and I just kept thinking hasn’t this girl been through enough? I wanted her to get her happy ending so bad! The growth that is displayed with her character is admiring. Again I don’t want to give too much away with my review because you just have to read it to understand! Dylan… oh Dylan how are you so perfect? This man so young but so perfect even with all he’s been through as well just in a different way than Mackenzie. Their friendship, the compassion he has for her, the way he cares and is so patient and just their chemistry is literally perfection. One of my favorite couples right next to Liv and EJ! I’m so excited for what’s next with this series.🥹🤍

I love Dylan and Mackenzie.

TVYH is third book I’ve read by Eve Blakely along with it being the third in her Cliff Haven Series. I’ve read the previous books in the series and loved those. I couldn’t wait for this one, I loved this one too. It’s truly special.

It was sweet to see Dylan and Mackenzie get to know each other and connect as the story went by. I know I was moved by the parts that showed their vulnerabilities (heads ups to check content warnings before reading)

I loved their bond & story, thank you for writing it 💗

Mackenzie and Dylan

The third installment in the Cliff Haven series. I absolutely loved Mackenzies whole personality. She's a breath of fresh air, she shines so bright.

I loved how Mackenzie and Dylans whole dynamic. I genuinely had a smile on my face most of the time reading this story. It was so cheeky and fun. Whilst also navigating some serious, heart wrenching topics.

I love Eve Blakelys writing! It draws you in and just makes you want to be part of the Cliff Haven world.

🌊ARC REVIEW🌊

Eve Blakely has a way of squeezing your heart and keeping you on the verge of tears.
Mackenzie Riley first appeared in book 2 of the Cliff Haven Series ‘The Version of Us’ and we later learned she was the unknown half-sister to Kristen Riley.

Mackenzie had been dealt a plethora of trauma, from her mother abandoning her as a child that left her under the care of her alcoholic father, to being physically and emotionally abused by her boyfriend. After feeling like she was worthless, Cliff Haven kind of brought a sense of relief but also a lot of self reflection to Mackenzie.

Dylan Abbott on the other hand had experienced nothing but privilege growing up. Never left wanting and having everything at the palm of his hands. Unlike other privileged rich kids though, Dylan refused to follow in his father’s footsteps of taking over the family multi-billion dollar company. Instead he chose to move to Cliff Haven and work for what he truly wanted to do. Educating others on the importance of oceanic preservation. However, he kept his true identity a secret.

While Mackenzie stormed through trying to find her place, what she found was support and love like she had never experienced before. Both her and Dylan leaned on each other, with Mackenzie having to learn how to trust and open herself up again, despite the past traumatic experiences she endured, and Dylan learning how to be unashamed of his upbringing while sticking true to what he believed in.

Their story was uplifting and inspiring. You felt so much for Mackenzie, understanding how tough it must be, while admiring Dylan for providing her with such an encouraging safe space to open up and process the tough emotions buried deep within her.

While I didn’t cry as hard as I did with book 2, this one took my breath away and kept me teetering on the edge of tears.

If you are in search of a closed-door, uplifting story of perseverance, I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

Thank you so much to Eve Blakely for the opportunity to ARC read this book.

This book is filled with characters you’ll love and a swoon worthy leading man who isn’t afraid to drive a falling apart beat up car.
Mackenzie has her issues and Dylan has his secrets but together they figure things out with humor, love and friendship.

Trope things: (I still suck at breaking books down)
- fake dating
-small town
-found family
- complicated parental relationships
- beach town
- addiction recovery
- mended relationships
- hidden identity
- closed door romance (well maybe door cracked open)

And here’s what Eve had to say about it:

The Version You Hide is finally here!

“Check this one out if you’re looking for your next emotional, small town, grumpy x sunshine read, complete with a gorgeous bartender that has a thirst for adventure and a woman described regularly as a force of nature. Oh, and did I mention there’s a pair of witty old ladies with sass thrown in for good measure?

I’m so excited for the world to meet Mackenzie and Dylan. I poured my entire soul into this little book. May it be everything you need and a little more.”

And yes Eve it was everything I needed this summer! Such the perfect light and yet hardy clean romance.
