George Pérez (June 9, 1954 – May 6, 2022) was an American comic books artist and writer, known for his work on various titles, including Avengers, Teen Titans and Wonder Woman.
George Pérez opens his run with the idea that all Amazons are the reincarnated souls of women killed unjustly by men, and just continues to give issue after issue of incredible work. After the New 52 run, it feels great to read a Wonder Woman run where women are actually centred, and all that makes the character cool is finally embraced. We get Greek mythology, we get the peace of Paradise Island contrasted with the war, capitalism and rancid masculinity of earth, rendered in such breathtaking art work that never phones it in. I finally understand the hype.
I have loved the idea of the Wonder Woman character since Justice League. Getting the opportunity to read the character origin has been a joy and act of affirmation to the initial desire. The titular character is well written with good lessons to pass on.
