Trapped in the past and hunting a serial killer? Of course Zatanna's birthday got magically messed up.
Continuing from the Webtoons tale—when Zatanna is attacked and bested by a powerful sorceress, her father casts a spell to protect her—accidentally sending her to Whitechapel, London, in the year 1888.
She soon discovers a serial killer plaguing the streets of the city, Jack the Ripper. Unable to return home and certain that the supernatural killer has answers, Zatanna sets out in pursuit of the Ripper alongside the denizens of Whitechapel and one John Constantine.
Is it bad that I liked the side characters the most :P
But overall not bad. There was like... kinda a plot hole but not really but I'm not going to look too much into it. I enjoyed the ride and that's all that matters.
But seriously the cat was my favourite :P Can't wait to continue reading the DC Webtoons - onto Red Hood and the Outlaws before I jump back into Wayne Family Adventures which is a fave.
This series finally ends, in a cluttered Superhero Finale Battle mess that undermines the mystery work of the first few books with an overly complicated group of villains, attempting to wrap up so many plots in a neat bow.
The art has stopped almost all attempt to look like 1890s London or have any background at all, just existing as characters yelling at one another while doing magic. A disappointing finale considering the strong opener.
Oh I loved this series as a whole, the final was great and I am delusional that we will get another season, I NEED to know what will happen between zatanna and john, and i need Roz to find a gf. This was so cool to be free and i loved Zatanna so much you can’t even understand. This is from episode 36 to episode 51 (the end of the season) The art was fire too!!
Very good ending to an incredible series. Artwork was great, and I liked reading this new story of Zatanna and John Constantine as it unfold.
There were two things that I struggled with while reading, though. The first was Zatanna's spells. Some were incredible easy to read, but others weren't. Considering the whole thing with her powers is that her spells are spoken backwards, I often tried to read them, and many were impossible to decipher.
The second thing was that even though the graphic novel is only around 200 pages, it was incredibly dense. In the first third of this volume, there are three separate flashbacks alone (four if you count Mary's)! Admittedly, two of the flashbacks involved a young Bruce Wayne, and that had me really excited. If Sarah Dealy ever considered expanding Zatanna's story, I would highly recommend doing something from Zatanna's youth, when she and Bruce Wayne were friends.
Anyhow, that was a lot of flashbacks within one portion of this volume. While I preferred some more than others, it kept causing the main storyline to drag out. Not to mention, there was a lot resolved in this volume. There was Mary's backstory, the conclusion of Jack the Ripper, Allura, Zatanna and her father, and Zatanna and Constantine. Once I got past all the flashbacks, the story hit the ground running. Everything had a satisfactory conclusion for me, but there was a lot going on all at once. The storylines and different events were easy to keep separate, but it was an incredibly fast pace. Once one thing was finished, it was like you couldn't make it one panel without the next major thing suddenly happening. Again, not that I didn't like the story itself, it was just that it was really fast paced and sometimes became overwhelming.
I will say, I was really happy with the way Zatanna and Constantine's story ended. It felt right based on all the other storylines I've read involving the characters. Overall, great series, and I loved this version of Zatanna and Constantine.
I’ve finished the whole series and now I’m sad🥺 The art was fantastic, the characters were so cute and quirky (in a good way), and the world was just so fun! I want so much more from this world bc I need Zatanna and Bruce’s backstory as kids and I ESPECIALLY need Zatanna and Constantine’s romance🤭
