After missing his flight back to Seoul, a disillusioned K-pop idol finds love, acceptance, and the strength to fight for his own happiness at last.

As a member of the internationally beloved K-pop group Apollo, Eunjae has learned firsthand that fame and fortune come at a steep price. But leaving it all behind is easier said than done, and it seems Eunjae has no choice but to continue… until he steps through the orange door at Wanna Waffle on the way to the airport, fails to catch his plane to Seoul, and upends his entire existence.

Jiyeon and her family don’t know the truth about this quiet, handsome stranger who stumbled into their restaurant. Regardless, it’s clear that he needs them. And the longer he stays, the more Eunjae realizes that he might just be willing to trade the adoration of millions for home, family, and even one chance at true love. But his powerful entertainment agency will never let him go without a fight, and Apollo’s fate hangs in the balance along with his own. If Eunjae hopes to win, he must stand his ground and fight back — not only for himself, but for the brothers who have loved and supported him all this time.

Brimming with warmth, waffles, and too many brothers, This Place is Magic will resonate with any reader searching for a comforting escape. Debut author Irene Te delivers a cozy contemporary read interwoven with found family and gentle romance. Step through that orange door for a heartfelt, hilarious, and irrepressibly hopeful journey of self-discovery, perfect for fans of Axie Oh and Jenny Han.

Waffles are the currency of power.

This book made me do multiple fist-bumps and happy dances. I probably looked like a fool but it was absolutely necessary. This Place is Magic is the cutest, fluffiest, most adorable and wholesome thing I have read in a long, long time. I cannot stress how much I had a big stupid smile stretching across my face during this entire book.

I'm always skeptical when I see a book only has all five star reviews, especially when it's an ARC or freshly published. The hype gets me nervous. But this book earned every last one and more. I am a simp for a fictional band. I am yearning for a spinoff about each brother. AND THERE'S A LOT OF THEM.

Between the cover and the blurb I genuinely thought this book would be more of a romance. There is certainly a romantic subplot, but it's so minimal and ends up being more of a subplot, which was actually really nice. Because this book is actually about Eunjae and his brothers, and the relationship between all of them, which is perfect since they're all so lovable and perfect.

The atmosphere of this book kind of reminded me of a Pixar movie, in a very good way; it was magical and very gentle and sweet. Everything flowed smoothly but a lot of it felt very low-stakes, yet that only added to the allure and comfort of the book. There was still a thread of seriousness and genuine emotional stakes, but they weren't overplayed, allowing the book to focus more on the love and support between the characters, the inner emotional conflicts of Eunjae, and the details of his decision to make a huge choice for the direction of his own life.

The characters all shine here, which is fantastic for a family-focused book. The sibling bonds between Eunjae and all his brothers was adorable, as was his bonding and brotherly friendship with Denny as it developed.

Denny, Jiyeon, and the entire Han family are absolute gems who I adore. Sweet, funny, all heart and banter and good intentions. And Eunjae is a sweet cinnamon roll angel who I would protect with my life, so watching him and this whole family who randomly adopts him bond and fall in love with each other was so funny and heartwarming.

As for the members of Apollo, Eunjae's brothers are iconic. I love Max and Kazu, I love Jaehwan even though he was such a background character. I loved how even though he was busy in the military, Jaehwan's priority is his brothers and he makes sure to be there for them and stay involved from afar, with his presence and influence on them being felt all throughout the book. The way the brothers always close rank to protect each other and have such a loving, supportive, playful found family dynamic was the highlight of the book.

This Place is Magic is hilarious overall and I found myself laughing out loud at least once or twice a chapter. These pages are bursting with comedy and delightful surprises. THE GROUP CHATS BETWEEN THE BOYS. The interview snippets between chapters. The fan podcast transcripts. The slow trickle of information about Eunjae's upbringing and Apollo's career. The DETAILS.

The chapters are all short and fly by, the book never lingers where it doesn't have to, allowing the dynamics and status quo of the book to move along and change naturally, with nice, even pacing. The book is almost evenly split 50/50 with the first half being Eunjae's adventure with the Hans in America, and the second half being Eunjae's return to Korea and reunion with his brothers, and it works SO WELL. Seeing those two worlds eventually collide is genuinely amazing and kept me laughing and smiling as the two separate groups of main characters finally met and began interacting with each other.

If there was any one book I could magically demand a sequel to and have the cosmos conspire to make it happen, it would be this one. I need another book about Eunjae. And I need a book about every member of Apollo. Especially Max.

I am so curious about Jungwoo's love life, WHO IS HE DATING?

I want an entire novel about Denny, too. He is my ideal husband ngl. And yes, waffles ARE the currency of power. I'm convinced Denny is a secret agent and running his parents waffle house is just a civilian cover identity. Because what the heck?!

The way that Jeanie clocked Eunjae the very first day. Never underestimate kpop stans lol.

I cannot believe we never meet Arthur Hong on screen. WHO IS THIS MAN AND WHAT IS THE TEA? What were those two breakups like?

Jiyeon is still such a mysterious character and I want to learn more about her. I feel like we barely scratched the surface of who she is and what she's gone through, I have a billion questions about her life and motivations, yet I totally get her and where she's coming from in every scene. I think retreat is a major theme of this novel; needing shelter from constant exposure and turmoil, and she and Eunjae both clearly have that in common.

All in all This Place is Magic is an astounding novel perfect for anybody who needs positivity, optimism, wholesome loving male friendships and brotherhood and found family, and people who love waffles, kpop, and sassy banter, let alone people who like all three.

Patiently hoping for this to spawn an entire series because IT'S TOO GOOD TO JUST BE ONE BOOK. Thank you to BookSirens for the advanced reader copy. This read has cemented my growing opinion that BookSirens has all the hidden gems.

This Place is Magic releases on April 30th and I can tell you I absolutely snagging a paperback of this one as soon as I possibly can. If this doesn't blow up on TikTok and BookTube, there is no justice in the world!

thank you so much to book of matches media and the author for the early copy! all opinions are my own!

i knew i would adore this book as soon as i read the synopsis... i just didn't expect to love it as much 😱😭
this is just the perfect example of found family: the way Eunjae kept referring to his members as his brothers made me swoon so much, i adore so much when friendship is so strong and so beautiful that any of them would follow him without hesitation so that he can be happy. and the main theme was that: can a Kpop idol find happiness in the middle of a chaotic life?? during the second half i just wanted to hug him so badly, the things that kept going in his head were too bad and he is just a smol baby who deserves so much love and a huge hug 😭😭😭
and then there were the Han's. they were such a magical family, their banter was amazing and Denny is just a force of its own, someone unpredictable that made me laugh so much. Jiyeon was so adorable and loved her, tho i wish we knew a bit more about her. the romance was sooo slow and the hints were so subtle, i could definitely say i have finally read a book where not much happens, that everything is shown with attitudes and small gestures 😍😍
pleaaaase give this book the love it deserves, i promise you will laugh so much at the Apollo boy band and the Han's crazyness 😎💜

Heartwarming! Ari is a KPOP star who accidentally ends up away from the band and into a cozy cafe with the most eclectic family. Reading about Ari briefly joining this slice of life family while he finds himself beyond stardom was wholesome!

This Place is Magic is a delicious read - with sweet characters, fun banter, and fluffy waffles. (Real waffles must be purchased separately.) This is a cozy comfort read that draws you in with a fully realized portrait of what it means to be a k-pop idol.

Eunjae, or Ari, as he is known to his fans, is a reluctant idol, and the author paints a portrait of what it means to live under the intensity of the idolatry. As a new fan of k-pop in general, this book gave me a perspective that I was not expecting, but made the world of the genre so humanizing and relatable. I've watched some of the variety shows real life groups put out there, and it is amazing how much these stars give of themselves to their fans. It's hard to remember that there is a real toll from public scrutiny like that. And it's difficult for me to understand why it's such a big part of the culture in Korea to push pop stars into a life like this. I really felt for Ari throughout as he tried to find the life he always wanted while not letting down his other Apollo group members.

Yet it was delightful for this reader, that this struggle included romantic feelings for someone he shouldn't really be with. Jiyeon is the perfect every-girl - funny, smart, compassionate, and even better for Ari, not really familiar with his k-pop group. Jiyeon's family ends up helping Ari as he tries to find himself, and the family's different theories about who Ari is and why he's hiding out is hilarious. Jiyeon also has her own issues with the public spotlight which makes for an interesting contrast to Ari's life. All this coupled with Jiyeon's support and sensitivity to Ari and his plight just makes for the perfect springboard of a charming and fulfilling romance.

This book paints an entertaining and empathetic portrait of k-pop life and the difficulties idols have when it comes to romance. I rooted for Ari and Jiyeon so hard and I think the author was so inventive and thoughtful in approaching what would be such a difficult relationship in the real world. Not to mention also crafting engaging side characters in Ari's group members (oh their endless banter - I love it!) and in Jiyeon's family (I'm sure Denny would not like being called a "side character".)

If you are interested in a cozy, sweetly clandestine romance with humor and wit, and a way for you to imagine what it would be like to encounter your favorite idol randomly in your neighborhood, this is the perfect read for you!

(Thanks to the author for an advance reader copy of the book!)

Thank you to the author for this ARC!

As soon as I read the initial description of this book, I knew I wanted to read it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is a book about the Kpop industry, but you don't have to know anything about it to enjoy the story.

The story follows the main character, Eunjae, a Kpop idol who is struggling with burnout and figuring out what he wants his future to look like. One night he misses his plane back home to Seoul and instead walks through the 'magical' door of the Wanna Waffle restaurant where he is taken in by the family that owns it. All of the characters, not just the main, are well written and you become invested with all of them. The main focus is on Eunjae's journey to figure out his path but the exploration of his friendships, family relationships, and a budding romantic interest makes for a fully engrossing story. All of the bickering interactions between his Kpop group members are also hilarious.

Besides being a funny, warm, and cozy story, the book also explores issues within the Kpop industry that all Kpop fans have had to ponder while supporting their favorite artists.

I highly recommend you take time to read Eunjae's story and meet the members of Apollo and the family that runs the Wanna Waffle restaurant.

This book brought a smile to my face while imagining what it could be like to see a k-pop artist find comfort in a found family and a Waffle House. Eunjae and Jiyeon are the perfect pair, along with Eunjae’s list of brothers (Denny has me cackling everytime he changes the number of members because there’s a lot 😅). I came across this book by chance and glad I was able to dive into it! I can’t wait to read the next installment before book 2 drops later this year 💜☀️🦁

It took me way longer to finish this than normal, yet I REALLY enjoyed this story! I felt that this story gave me a deeper look into what goes on with K-Pop artists, and really for any creative out there. It’s insane to me how many restrictions there is to live, love, have freedom, and a family. This story made me feel so many emotions. I’m happy to know that there will be a second book coming in November! 🤭 I can’t wait to dive back into this duology and this magical world. 🎶🪄

This Place is Magic By Irene Te is an introduction to a world of chaotic coziness with deep themes, the meaning of brotherhood, and the understanding that sometimes staying strong is not the easy path. If you like K-Pop or KDramas, this book will be right up your alley, or if you just like cozy stories that make you feel like going home, this one’s a winner in that category, too!

I went into reading This Place Is Magic, knowing nothing about the synopsis or Irene Te; #blameitonthecover. When I saw the cover (I mean, there are waffles on it!) I was intrigued. There was an instant move to the top of TBR moment, and I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely K-drama inside.

“Eunjae had felt the flicker of a wish stirring in his heart: to be known. Really, truly known."

This Place Is Magic reads like a cozy, coming-of-age journey to finding your place in the world and finding the strength to stand up for yourself, all the while learning that family is truly a choice you make. It introduced me to a world of chaotic coziness with profound themes, the meaning of brotherhood, and the understanding that sometimes quitting is being strong.

I loved how Irene Te mainly told this story from the male, Eunjae’s (Ari’s) POV. It’s not something I’ve read often, but it was done well and thoroughly enjoyable. I often found myself smiling over the back-and-forth dialogue of the characters and their fun, sarcastic humor. It was well-balanced, though, with deeper topics and threads that made me want to savor this book.

“Sometimes running is the only thing you can do. Sometimes you’re just not strong enough for anything else. They say you shouldn’t be a quitter, quitting is for cowards, losers, whatever. But it can be so much harder to quit something that’s hurting you."

The secondary characters in the band had some great personalities that I’m hoping Irene Te explores more. The podcaster segments were a delightful little surprise interwoven through the story that gave us background and context to current events without seeming like an information dump.

The gentle romance as a background to this story added just the right touch of sweetness and left me eager to see where Irene Te will take this story next. I loved Jiyeon (Emma), and the way her character was written left a distinct air of mystery about her that made me really want to know her story, as well as the story of her brother Denny and his “security clearance” iykyk.

If you couldn’t tell already, I really enjoyed this story and all its chaotic coziness. I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. This story was the definition of reading a book that feels like a warm hug.

When a famous K-pop star stumbles into a waffle house, the last thing he expects is to find happiness, found family, and possible romance… that is if he can remain hidden from his agency and his band. Eunjae is part of Apollo, an extremely famous K-pop band. Eunjae is tired, he wants to leave the band but he doesn’t want to hurt his bandmates who he loves like brothers. Eunjae yearns for more, he wants freedom, he wants to escape the constant pressure, the fans, the spotlight, the grueling lifestyle that he never asked for and is afraid to leave in case he disappoints people. So when he stumbles across an orange door like the one in his favorite novel he goes inside… and is immediately warmly welcomed by a sweet waffle shop family. Eunjae meets Jiyeon, a sweet and beautiful girl who works in her families waffle shop. When it’s time for him to leave he realizes he missed his flight and Jiyeon and her family welcome him to stay with them, no questions asked. The longer he stays the more he yearns to never leave. But his bandmates need him back, his company is threatening him, and his fans will come after him…. can he find a way to escape it all and hold onto this little bit of happiness that he’s finally found? This was such a cozy little read, there was an adorable found family ( both Jiyeon’s family and Eunjae’s bandmates were all so sweet and cute), and the growth that Eunjae went through was a sweet read. This book really focuses on the struggles that many K-pop stars go through and I loved that this book was from Eunjae’s POV. We get to see him dealing with so much and finding a way to go after his happiness and his own freedom, how he stands up for not only himself but for his bandmates. The romance was really light but it was sweet and cute, Eunjae and Jiyeon were a light and very supportive couple with cute moments. This book just felt like a warm hug, it’s a cozy read that is perfect for reading at your favorite cafe (and with a waffle of course).

*Thank you to @irenewritesthings for this heartfelt story and @literaryinspired for bringing us together for this read. Ready for an escape into a world where authenticity shines? This novel is for you. #LiteraryInspiredARCs *

This Place Is Magic by Irene Te is truly magical.
Growing up under the spotlight of the Korean entertainment industry, Eunjae might look like he has everything—fame, money, and status—but behind the glitter is a young man who’s lost his sense of self. From page one, I felt such deep empathy reading through Eunjae’s perspective.

Jiyeon, the female lead, is an enigma in the best way—funny, smart, and compassionate, yet quietly wrestling with her own relationship to freedom. Both she and Eunjae want the same thing: to live a normal life while still chasing their dreams. Their chemistry is tender, real, and beautifully understated.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the inclusion of Apollo’s podcasts and livestreams. Those moments made the characters feel so real—not just idols but humans with emotions, insecurities, and humor. I adored the sibling and family dynamics—Eunjae’s bond with his brothers, and Jiyeon’s warm (and often hilarious) relationship with her brother Denny and her parents. These family moments gave the story a grounded coziness that balanced perfectly with its emotional depth.

This novel explores themes of agency, freedom, sacrifice, loss of childhood, and dreams—all woven into a heartfelt narrative about identity and self-worth. Irene paints a vivid portrait of what it means to be a K-pop idol: the pressure, the performance, and the longing for authenticity. I found this story incredibly humanizing. It reminded me how much idols give of themselves to their fans, often at great personal cost.

Eunjae (or Ari, as his fans know him) is a reluctant idol trying to navigate love, loyalty, and the need to be known—really known. Jiyeon’s presence in his life is a quiet rebellion, a reminder that love and understanding can exist outside the spotlight. Their relationship felt so genuine that I was rooting for them from start to finish.

The supporting cast—Ari’s brothers in Apollo and Jiyeon’s family—were equally engaging. Their banter, humor, and affection created such a full, lived-in world that I didn’t want to leave. And let’s not forget the waffles—sweet, fluffy, and symbolic of all the cozy comfort this story delivers.

It offers a rare and refreshing male perspective in a romance that’s as emotional as it is funny. The writing is warm and introspective, filled with relatable quotes that linger long after you close the book.

This book feels like a cozy K-drama come to life—a coming-of-age journey about finding your voice, standing up for yourself, and realizing that family isn’t just who you’re born to, but who you choose.

In short, This Place Is Magic is the definition of a warm hug in book form. With its blend of humor, heart, and hope, Irene delivers a story that’s both deeply comforting and thought-provoking. Whether you love K-pop, K-dramas, or just stories that feel like home, this one’s an absolute winner.

I received a review copy of This Place is Magic from Irene. This review is voluntary and 100% honest.

This was a very cosy book that tugs at the heartstrings.
Eunjae is a member of the Kpop group, Apollo, and it follows his story as an idol. I expected more of a romance aspect to this book, but I was pleasantly surprised that this was not necessarily the case.

There is some romance in the book, but it is very wholesome and uncomplicated in many ways. I really enjoyed how the romance was dealt with as it was really refreshing! Jiyeon and Eunjae seem to just understand each other, and they really found each other through everything. It was an unspoken thing almost that they loved each other. But the other love in this book was definitely the love of found family between the Hans and Eunjae. This aspect made it really cosy and enjoyable because it feels like exactly what Eunjae needed and also was a place of comfort as a reader.

The romance was secondary to Eunjae (and Jiyeon's) story about finding themselves in a world where everyone's eyes are on them. I enjoyed reading this POV of the Kpop world because it's not sunshines and rainbows.

It was also really refreshing to read the story in Eunjae's point of view, it's rare to see that nowadays. The way he was written was also so normal (in the best way) and unproblematic. He felt like an actual person, unlike a lot of men in romance novels.

As someone who sees the agencies as the corporate institutions they are, I think seeing this part of the K-pop world was great, especially for fans who see the agencies as 'friends'of the artists.
The relationships between the members felt a bit utopian, I don't think this is always the case, but I had fun reading about their relationships and could find my own thoughts and hopes about their relationships to each other expressed in the book.
This book is definitely in the perspective of a seasoned fan, so there were some realistic parts and some unrealistic parts, but I had a great time reading this either way. It was really refreshing and cosy, and something I can recommend to any Kpop fan.

Wholesomeness:🧇🧇🧇🧇🧇

Being a member of an international K-pop group is hard work. So when Eunjae decided he’s had enough, he found his chance one day when he saw a little waffle spot called Wanna Waffle. There, Jiyeon, just a girl helping her family run their business, took it upon herself to help this stranger in the night find himself. This was just the beginning of what will later become their real life kdrama chock full of secrets, an overprotective brother, two loving parents and lots of waffles.

I loved this book. The way it was written had me thinking of all the kdrama I’ve watched. I envisioned the first meeting of Denny and Mr. Han like how you would in those cultivator shows, epic characters with huge amounts of power that could crush you at a moment’s notice. I couldn’t stop laughing. There were other moments like this as well and they were just so enjoyable.

Every character was truly their own individual. You can feel their emotions as each member of Apollo interact with each other. And I liked how this book was formatted to show the history of how Emerald Entertainment was created and how Apollo came to be. Really well put together.

Would I say this is a romance novel? Yes, but like how a kdrama is and on the wholesome scale. It was more on the descriptive side when Eunjae and Jiyeon interacted. To really know what I mean, you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

I definitely recommend reading this book if you’re a fan of kdramas, wholesome things, and waffles. Find out where to get a copy at https://irenete.com/

Much like Eunjae, I wandered through an open door into a wonderful, warm, waffle-tastic world. After a 6 month reading slump, slogging through book after book of promises to fulfill its predecessor unkept. I finally found my joy in reading once again. Magical, heart warming, and surprisingly hilarious, this book fulfilled my every wish. Combining K-dramas and k-pop onto paper it gave ‘Lovely Runner’ vibes with the fictional band, Apollo. And while there was romance, it wasn’t the center piece of the book. Each character was fleshed out and felt like a solid person I knew, even if they only popped in here and there. Irene’s ability to bring them all to life with just a few sentences and snippets showcases her talent. I felt as if I truly knew each and every one, down to the villainous management agency, and not so wonderful mother dynamic. I could taste the waffles through the pages. I could feel the love and warmth through the words. Apollo became more than just a fictional band, they became family. Denny and his family became the side kicks Apollo never knew they needed. I often find myself thinking of how Denny or Jeannie would handle a situation. Fictional characters that made their way into my non fictional life.
Irene continues to give us peeks through her social media updates, and amazing character art. Various bonus stories through her newsletter, opportunities to help Apollo on some serious name decisions, and tidbits of multi media keep you immersed in this joyous world.

I am so grateful that I could read such an incredible debut novel by Irene Te.

It was the perfect contemporary novel to end April with, one that really gave all the cozy, happy feelings and that also made the perfect palette cleanser from my usual dark reads. Irene literally had me beaming like sunshine rays reading this book, I still can't believe that this was her debut novel!I fell in love with the blurb and beautiful cover, but then I fell in love with Irene's characters, a K-pop star, and waffles of all things. The storyline of this book was amazing, especially with the realistic aspect of experiencing burnout as a pop star, dealing with fame as a pop star, and so much more. I loved the family aspect of this story, especially between Eunjae and his brothers (their group chat was HILARIOUS). I was so glad that this book wasn't just solely revolving around the K-pop star aspect, being a cheesy pop star romance. It had so many layers, making it one of the most incredible reads to end April with. Very rarely do a book really leave me speechless and madly in love. This is one of them. And it's going to be a physical copy in my library. Thank you Irene for stepping in faith & giving us readers a masterpiece of a read! 🌟 5/5
🌶 G

What you get: K-Pop Fandom, waffles, light romance, brotherhood, found family, resources, lovable omma and oppa

Trigger warning: strained parental relationship, evil music empire.

This Place is Magic is the debut novel from Irene Te. I came across her post on Instagram and she had me at K-Pop and waffles.

The story follows K-Pop superstar Eunjae of the worldwide famous group, Apollo. One minute, he's living the pop star life, the next minute he's entranced by a magical door leading him to Jiyeon and the Hans in Wanna Waffles.
It took me a while to write this review because I couldn't put my excitement and feelings into words. I started this book only knowing K-Pop and waffles. I didn't know what to expect, which is usually how I like to read my books. And boy, did it exceed my expectations – especially from an author's debut novel.

The plot was unique and totally had all the vibes of a Korean drama with a cozy twist. It had funny moments, excitement, plot twists, and a little romance.

The characters were well written. You fell in love with the relatable ones, got angry at the villain, and invested in the side characters. I also enjoyed the chapters dedicated to podcasts, social media posts, and gossip columns.

This book was a quick read, pulled you into the plot, and was so hard to put down. I'm crossing my fingers that there are future books about the other band members and maybe Denny.

This book made me laugh, made me cry, made me angry, and made me feel loved. It did everything a book is supposed to make you feel.

✨This book is everything you could want in a contemporary romance, coated in dreamy K-drama charm and sprinkled with irresistible K-pop. We follow Eunjae, a K-pop idol who’s burned out, disillusioned, and longing for something real. One missed flight leads him to Wanna Waffle, a small, magical café overflowing with warmth, charm, and people who finally see him, not the polished idol the world knows.

Inside this cozy little haven, Eunjae discovers more than just comfort. he discovers connection, slow-burning romance, and a sense of home he never thought possible. The way Irene Te captures these quiet, tender moments is heart-melting, like a scene straight out of your favorite K-drama.

But life as a K-pop idol doesn’t let go easily. Eunjae’s agency won’t release him, and the book does an incredible job showing the hidden struggles behind the glittering stage: the loss of privacy, the sacrifices of self, and the invisible weight idols carry every day. Fans see the talent, the performances, and the smiles, but rarely the cost. This story shines a light on that truth, without losing any of its magic.

Heartwarming, romantic, and full of gentle swoons, This Place Is Magic is a love letter to finding yourself, finding love, and finding home in the most unexpected places. Curl up with this book and get ready to fall in love with the romance, the magic, and Eunjae himself. 🧇💖

"This Place is Magic" is the most charming, delightful, and heartwarming read I've come across in quite a while.

This book delves into the story of Eunjae and his brothers, exploring their relationships, all portrayed as endearing and flawless.

The book creates a movie-like vibe, sprinkling magic and charm into a peaceful storyline. Its laid-back scenes bring a cozy feel, mixing in just the right amount of heart and depth. Centered around relationships, Eunjae's struggles, and a pivotal choice, this tale is a journey worth taking!

"This Place is Magic" is a hilarious book filled with humor in group chats, interviews, and podcasts. The story of Eunjae and Apollo is captivating with intricate details setting it apart.

The book maintains a smooth pace with short chapters, transitioning seamlessly between Eunjae's adventures in America and his return to Korea. The storyline progresses naturally, uniting main characters in an engaging manner.

Overall, "This Place is Magic" is an incredible novel that is ideal for anyone seeking positivity, optimism, heartwarming male friendships, brotherhood, found family dynamics, as well as those who enjoy waffles, K-pop, and witty banter – especially those who appreciate all three.

While I’ve been aware of K-Pop bands, I can’t say that I knew a lot about them or the culture of that music industry. I’m so glad that Irene Te’s love of K-Pop brought so many aspects of the challenges K-Pop artists face to the page. I had no idea how tough the contracts and schedules of these groups could be. So it makes sense to me when the Eunjae, aka Ari of the band Apollo (now incognito as Ryan Kim) takes a detour through an interesting door to Wanna Waffle restaurant, and decides to escape there for a while. Missing his flight on purpose, he becomes this mystery man who is embraced by the family who owns the restaurant. Their warmth and welcoming spirit makes them the best found family, even if older brother Denny is skeptical about everything. (We like Denny though. Gruff with a heart of gold.) The relationship between Eunjae and Jiyeon is very sweet. Their storyline is lovely. And I like how intertwined throughout the story are texts and transcripts of the band. I feel this adds to the world building. The interactions between all the brothers of Apollo are funny too. It’s a great light read that K-Pop fans (and even those new to it) will really enjoy.

This book is magic. As a kpop fan that’s seen it all since 2012, I loved every single page and moment in it (The author can confirm this with how much screaming I did in her DMs as I read through). Irene does NOT hesitate to call us fans OUT!!!

I went in scared that this would be something along the lines of a fanfic, but boy, oh boy, I have never been more happy to be so so SO wrong!!

What I expected to only be a romance turned out to be a love story in other ways as well: an ode to brotherhood, found family, the chances we happen upon, and the choices we make with those chances.

I will definitely be purchasing this book for the trophy shelf because I know it’s something I’ll reach for again and again. I cannot wait for the next installment and I KINDLYYYYY DEMAND books for all 9 members + Denny. Kindly.

Thank you Irene Te and Literary Inspired for a copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for the magic that is This Place is Magic.

What can I say about Irene Te’s book? I am unsure how I stumbled across her but I’m so glad I did!

This was such a cute cozy kontemporary read (see what I did there huh huh). I just loved everything about it! From the imaginary scent of waffles to Eunjae finding himself and what he wants. I loved the different perspectives throughout the story. It was like watching a kdrama but in my head!

Also the scenes Irene painted for each location was perfection. I could imagine the Hans and Eunjae inside Wanna Waffle or seeing him standing outside the Ivy Apartments in the evening after a fresh rain.

Our MFC Jiyeon is captivating from the beginning and I just love her personality. I appreciate that she isn’t one dimensional from how she ended back with her parents and the mystery of where she was before that.

I know we’re a week away from This Place is Magic coming out but I’m ready to devour the next book whenever it may come!!

Heartwarming, cozy and wholesome. 🧇🧇🧇

I've just recently got into this whole kpop world and was looking to begin my kpop era in books, my friend recommended me this book and I just had to dive in it.

I really enjoyed the way the story went with the flow, and the interviews and podcasts in-between made it much more appealing to me.
The amount of love between the characters is astonishing, the way the Hans automatically accept Eunjae within their family and help him out of pure kindness just warms your heart.
Even though the romance aspect is present, the story is more focused on Eunjae's struggles about what he wants and what's best for his brothers and himself as a group.

I stan Apollo now but I'm still unsure who's my bias. I need more of these guys, can't wait for the sequel. Can we have a light stick? 🫰🏻

A big thank you to the author for being so kind everytime I reached out.

i love a good found family, this reminded me of some i used to read on wattpad lol. i really liked the addition of mixed media and how it tied into the storyline at some point. i think my favorite would be the old interviews and maybe the podcast eps! i think i was most interested in his fascination of the door and how that was founded by his obsession w the brass key.. like the way he spoke about this book and used it to discover the life he wanted vs the life he was forced to have… yea more of that pls!!

my one complaint would have to be about a majority of the dialogue. their jokes + silly remarks were not my type of my humor and it was kind of nonstop. and all of the characters seemed to have the same kind of humor so that wasn’t much help in establishing different personalities for each character. the dialogue that i did enjoy was when they were serious!! i needed more of that kind of dialogue, i would’ve definitely enjoyed it more!! (like when eunjae would talk about vivi)
