No Fat Chicks will change the way you see the world and feel about your body. Timely and controversial, passionate and intelligent, it exposes how big business has perpetrated a lucrative hoax that turned fat into gold and prejudice into profit. This book is in the vanguard of the anti-diet movement, which some are calling the next great social revolution.
I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. It’s an older book so some of the information is slightly out of date, which I expected when I decided to read it. The history of anti-fat history is still there and is explained in detail.
What frustrated me about this book was the author’s constant need to compare the struggles of fatphobia with racism or homophobia. The author says a number of times that racism and homophobia are no longer acceptable/appropriate where fatphobia is. Those struggles can be compared in some areas, but it was inappropriate to compare the suffering of people in each group and claim that racism/homophobia no longer exists. The author spends way too much time comparing these struggles. It would’ve been cool to have the overlap of fatphobia and racism and homophobia rather than pit them against each other.
It’s interesting to look back and see how fatphobia has changed in 30 years. I recommend this book if you’re willing to look past the comparisons of struggles, and a little bit of outdated language.
Much of this book was siting other sources. Most people are like sheep and do what they are told. If the media tells people fat is bad, they will obediently believe. I already know that advertising and tv and movies does not favor fat women. Obviously! But this book is still motivating to continue looking critically at how women are portrayed. And not be sucked into hating myself
