[CW: Eye trauma, child abuse]
This is a fun little mystery/thriller that doesn’t warrant inspecting too closely, lest its narrative fabric crumble to dust and blow away in a sharp puff of logic, but certainly makes for an entertaining bit of suspense.
The case has been solved with Juzo’s confession, which comes amidst a bunch of Sherlock-esque posturing and villain-style monologuing on his part. Except that’s entirely too simple, so something must be up.
Jin has his own case, a mysterious figure beating up child abusers, to tackle, so he lets sleeping dogs lie. For about five whole seconds before somebody attempts to kill Kanon and she tries to entice him into helping her clear her father’s name.
There are lots and lots of classic suspense tropes in this one - the fact that nobody could possibly have perpetrated the attack on Kanon, everybody having secrets upon secrets, and mysterious symbology that probably means something.
It’s almost nonsensically violent at times - that eye scene doesn’t need to exist, but it’s just more shocking that way, so there you go. The amount of misdirects is also a bit much too, with a whole slew flying at you over the volume.
But, in this case, I do think that more is probably more for a change. This feels like a big old 90’s movie and I’m not mad at it for evoking that era with its creepy killers and all that.
Plus, for all that it doles out a plethora of reveals, some of them are actually really well done and at least one caught me off guard. It’s entirely too entertaining to give it too much grief.
Now, I will say that I think I have figured the mystery out, simply because nobody really digs deep into something that even the cops on the scene tag with an ‘allegedly’. That’s a big red flag that I couldn’t unsee, but I’ll just have to keep reading and see if I’m right.
Besides, this sure knows how to end a volume and, much as the series has reached for the ‘but is that what actually happened?’ card before, I can’t see them walking it back that easily.
4 stars - had a great time and this is a fun entry in its genre, with all the highs and lows that entails. I think something like The Decagon House Murders is more to my tastes, but this makes for a nice break from my usual books.

Actually gasped out loud at the end! We're getting deeper into the story now, encountering different twists and turns, building up suspicion. It's actually pretty good, although still feels like it's lacking some depth.

Bin momentan nicht so gefestigt, um Thriller/Horror/Krimi Sachen sehr zu genießen, habe ich gemerkt. :( Fand die Geschichte auf in Band 2 ganz gut, vor allem die Cliffhanger sind hier immer spannend, aber gerade nicht so meins. Werde erstmal stoppen und irgendwann schauen, ob ich die Reihe weiter lesen werde.

Le pongo 1 estrella debido al contenido sexual que el autor ha decidido añadir en una escena en la que para nada tenía sentido. Lo peor es cómo justifica el personaje esa "reacción" tan gratuita que parece sacada más de una visión misógina del autor que de una inspiración en un posible hecho real.
Que haya contenido sexual en manga, cómics o libros no es malo en si mismo. El problema está en el contexto y lo que se quiere dar a entender con esa escena.

This story is insane! Kanon, that girl goes from zero to sixty in a blink lol. Now Jin and her are carrying out their own investigation into the murders and despite all the family having alibi's there is still questions about all of them. Then on top of that the stuff that comes out about Jin was like running into a brick wall. But you think that revelation was enough oh no they have to go and end things in the prison and that ending is where they leave is hanging!?! WTH!

Continues the fun and twisty mystery! And seems to surprisingly have something to say about the cyclical nature of violence in families, and the hollowness of retribution
