Embla longs to experience what it is to fall in love. Astrid yearns for freedom in a city that looks down on her.
Demendia, the city of walls has been their home, their entire lives. A city run by the rules and restrictions of the King’s laws. But a plague spreads through the Farm District, leaving the harvest short-handed, and Embla’s life at risk — for if the tithe isn’t paid, Embla, the youngest daughter of the district leader, will be taken in sacrifice.
A choice must be made. Ask the King for help and risk the consequences of him saying no, or they can escape. Leave behind everything they have ever known to find a cure.
Two sisters, one choice that will change the fate of not only their lives but the entire empire’s.
Sydney Skye was born and raised in Florida. When she's not spending time with her 3 dogs and 3 cats she's either pouring over a book or mentally building a world somewhere far off.
I enjoyed the worldbuilding and how it showed the complexities of the human world, the mystery plague illness, and the harmful religious aspects of their society particularly against woman. It was interesting seeing the various characters across multiple pov, and insights into their motivations and feelings. The sisters endure so much and have many battles to face including trauma. I like that there's mystery and hidden identities scattered throughout and you don't find some truths until the end. It's an interesting series with Fae, magic, magical creatures, fated bonds, and secrets.
Heir of the Demon War by Sydney Skye beautifully illustrates the bond of sisters battling different demons (literally) but with the same struggle to find their purpose in a precarious world. Embla and Astrid's journey will immerse you in a uniquely crafted world with modern and fantasy elements. Filled with action, longing, lust, and magic, this book will keep you hooked until the very end!
This book is incredible. I got an ARC and got hooked really quickly because of the storyline. Easy to read and 1000% recommended! NEED THE REST OF THIS SERIES RIGHT NOW!
Beautifully written (debut?) novel. I personally loved the way Sydney intertwined real world issues into this fantasy world; pandemic, homelessness, patriarchy, human rights. She did such a wonderful job.
I received this book in exchange of my honest review.
This is a fantasy story that includes fae, faeries, demons and people of course. Astrid and Embla are two sisters and Demendia is their home. They haven't seen anything beyond Demendia. Women are trained to be a perfect housewife here but Astrid is a little different. She wants to be strong and she achieved part of it. But Demendia is not a great place to live and the king does not care about his people. Now Embla’s life is at risk because of the short harvest due to the spread of a plague. They need to leave the home they've known their whole life to get help for their people,to save Embla. But do they really know about their own self? In this journey they'll uncover many truths and face a lot of danger.
This story ends with a cliffhanger. I'm eagerly waiting for the next book. I loved the story building and the plot. Astrid and Embla, even though sisters, are totally opposite. Astrid is strong and brave and on the other hand Embla doesn't want to be strong, she wants to be ladylike because she wants to be the perfect housewife. Due to their journey they meet a lot of people who help them with everything. I loved how the story progressed and it holds a lot of intensity and suspense. The whole time I was like what's gonna happen now and in every twist I was like wait, what? I can't say much otherwise I'd reveal everything. Read this book, it's so good.
Fantasy with mystery, self discovery and a touch of spice!
Two sisters, Astrid and Embla, have been lied to their entire lives, having grown up in a secluded city cut off from the outside world and kept in the dark about their true identities by the man they called father.
A series of horrible events force the girls to flee in search of answers... And we're dragged along behind them as they're hit left and right with one revelation after another.
The world building is digestible but wholly unique, and the secondary characters not only get their own POV but they're just as loveable as the main characters! There's a touch of romance with a couple spicy scenes sprinkled in there, and quite a bit of personal discovery and growth.
This is a great choice for any fan of fantasy series such as Throne of Glass and is adapted for upper YA or NA readers. This book ends on a doozy of a cliffhanger, and if you're anything like me, you'll be dying for book 2 to release!
The world was intricate and has so many interesting places and creatures. I LOVE the creatures. And they talk. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Obsessed. I found the parallels between this fantasy world and ours very interesting.
The mystery of the past and the magic that seems to follow these sisters wherever they go will have you hooked. There’s a lot of unhealed wounds that are addressed, and the reality of how everyone deals with them differently brought a sense of genuineness to the story.
Um. Thea? What? She’s my favorite. I’m making her a friendship bracelet. I need her as my bestie.
This book sets the perfect base for an explosive kick butt second book. Like I didn’t know I was at the end but then I was on the last page like.. WHAT? You’re gonna tell me that, leave me here with them, and crack this door of possibility open? 😲 Sydneyyyyy!!! Aghhhh. 🧗🏻♀️
I truly enjoyed this book. The world-building is richly detailed creating an immersive experience without becoming overwhelming. While the story starts off slowly, it quickly gains traction, drawing you in deeper. As I learned more about Astrid and Embla, it became increasingly difficult to put the book down. The sisters have endured so much, navigating a harsh, patriarchal society before being thrust into the world of the fae and magical . Witnessing their transformation throughout the story is remarkable. Effie, in particular, stands out as one of my favorite characters, and I would love to see more of her journey. The author expertly weaves an intricate lore, bringing this fantasy world to life. And that cliffhanger! I am desperately waiting for the next book!!!
Ok, I'm behind on some ARC deadlines, but Sydney was so kind to give me extra time.
This was such a compelling read. The beginning was a bit slow, but it picked up after a few chapters. It reminded me of *Frozen* with Embla wanting to find love and Astrid yearning for freedom.
I loved the dedication and found the world-building easy to understand. Also, I've mentioned this before, but I usually hate younger sisters, and Embla seemed problematic to me. I loved the dynamic between Astrid and Augustus and his nickname for her. Loved Thea a lot! And I have my suspicions about who Nonna actually is.
I received an arc, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
A fantastic debut from Sydney Skye. A high fantasy romance.
With two FMC’s… the sisters. These are well imagined characters. They are well crafted and complex and they will inevitably pull out your heartstrings.
Brilliant complex and unique world building with a small amount of spice sprinkled throughout the narrative. It is an intriguing and unique concept and very well constructed.
It starts slowly gaining in tempo as we traverse through the plot ,that builds to an intense cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more…
A beautiful, intriguing and powerful storyline I absolutely loved it.
I loved love love this read. Anything that has to do with demon shifters or just plain romance I absolutely have to read. I really like the world building and the different aspects of human nature that show through in the story. it really put up in a situation where you had to rethink your morals. Like would you really leave everything behind to find a cure? I think the answers in the story is proof that I would use to leave in order to help more.
I have to say, as a reader who comes in and out of fantasy reads, this was such a great read for a debut!! This is a high fantasy read and I ate up the different povs. The fmcs reminded me of me and my sister and that just made this all more enjoyable to read. If fantasy is your thing then definitely check out Heir of the Demon War!
Let me just say, this book is soooooo good! The way Sydney wrote this book I just felt so completely emerged and I felt as if I was in the characters shoes while reading .
I really enjoyed the world building and getting to know the sisters. The banter was good and had me giggling. The pacing was a bit disjointed after the half way point but I think it will make more sense as the series progresses. There is a lot left to unfold and the ending was quite the cliffhanger. Looking forward to everything to come! The character artwork throughout was beautiful and I loved knowing what they looked like!
