A Silent Hope

Rate this book
Can hope be found when everything seems hopeless?

When illness threatens her brother’s life, deaf peasant Calaine Kalen vows to do anything to save him—including finding work near a war-torn area overrun with giants and nefarious schemes. When war threatens Prince Renner Leorin’s kingdom, he vows to save it no matter what—even if that means convincing a surly former enemy to help. Neither peasant nor prince ever imagined their efforts would place them in each other’s path.

She needs a cure. He needs a miracle. Can tragedy bring two unlikely hearts together, or will heartbreak shatter any hope of both love and saving those they care about?

A Silent Hope, a New Adult, faith-filled retelling of The Wounded Lion, is a standalone novella, complete with tropes like rags-to-riches, concealed identity, and a deaf heroine. It is part of the Hope Ever After series, a collection of twenty hopeful and uplifting fairy tale retellings. Each book is written by a different author, so it can be enjoyed in any order. The proceeds from this series are donated to the O.U.R. (Operation Underground Rescue) to rescue children from exploitation and trafficking.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

An excellent installment in the multi-author Hope Ever After series!

Both Renner and Calaine were sympathetic, well-developed characters that I enjoyed reading about. The plot moved along at a good pace with plenty of danger, excitement, and high stakes. As always, I appreciated that Madisyn Carlin kept both the language and romance clean, and I loved the faith content.

Overall, A Silent Hope was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction, non-magical fantasy, and novellas.

5+ stars (7/10 hearts). I knew I’d love this, but I didn’t expect to love it this much. But it’s so delightfully new and different—while still being so Madisyn Carlin!!

Of course, the worldbuilding is immaculate. And this time it includes lions (so unique) and GIANTS!!! Nobody ever does nonmagical or non-ogre giants and I AM HERE FOR IT. I’ve always loved giants in fiction!! Yeah, that’s probably 65% of my love for the book right there. It’s so cool. I loved Fald. And I loved the giants’ culture. SO. CRAZY. COOL.

Speaking of giants, I loved the characters. Renner was a less typical Carlin hero, not being a great fighter and instead a negotiator/ambassador. MORE YAY! Also, his feelings for inferiority were more valid than most of the Carlin heroes and ones I related so well to. Sibling inferiority is a cruel snare. Renyssa and Conrad were awesome (petition for a novella about Conrad’s romance now????) and so were the parents, briefly as they appeared… And Celaine. She was so sweet and brave and natural. I loved her and she was so inspiring. And I loooooved the Deaf + ASL inclusion. <33 Also, Jared and the rest of her family were sweet, and the villains were so fun to dislike. Though I would have liked more confrontation with the traitor.

The romance was kinda enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, which I love (I mean, they didn’t start out as enemies but Celaine thought he was, so….) and also included the royalty+peasant trope (yussssss). I loved Renner’s protection and Celaine learning to accept love and her own worth—worth being a big theme of the novel and SO well done in the two different circumstances of R & C.

Yeah, this was just adorable and deep and so, so funny and all-around satisfying and perfect. <3

A Favourite Quote: “You and Conrad are two completely different men. Which is as it should be. The Above made you you for a reason. He knew your temperament and skillset would be most beneficial in this circumstance.”
Hope implied there was a change. An opportunity to win or rise above the circumstances. Hope felt… light. Gentle and whispery, like a soft breeze on a warm day. It invigorated the heart and added purpose to one’s step. Reality remained all too eager to destroy hope, that fledgling brush of anticipation that things may work out for the better. Hope needed optimism to survive, and reality ruthlessly wielded the blade that cut down that hope.

A Favourite Humorous Quote: …“You really do act like you hate Cenau. Building her her own bed, catching salmon specifically for her because you say they’re her favorite, and purchasing fresh milk for her are classic signs of hatred toward lion cubs.”
Fald glowered. “Bones and buzzards, boy. You act like I crafted her her own collar decorated with flowers and her name.”
“You did.”
“You’re delusional.”
“I’m looking at it right now. You know, I thought a rock-eating monster with a missing eye and an attitude that matched yours would be the ideal pet for you, but now I’m convinced Cenau is what you needed. Once this is over, I can ask my sister to knit her a bright-pink sweater edged with lace.”
“Do that and I’ll sit on you.” Fald shook a thick finger at Renner. “Aren’t you supposed to be planning or something?”
“I’m trying.”
“Did you ever ask that Calaine girl what the giants looked like?”
Renner nodded toward the scrap of paper near Fald’s elbow. “I gave it to you, but Cenau occupied your attention.” The giant had been baby talking to Cenau, calling her a good girl and an adorable sweetheart, but for the sake of surviving, Renner wouldn’t mention that.

Read my review on my blog: https://penspagesandpulses.wordpress....

The past few weeks have been pretty rough for me. When I signed up to ARC read A Silent Hope, I didn't expect to be accepted into the ARC team. But Madi graciously let me into the team, and words cannot express how much I needed to read this book. Hope Ever After, it's an apt name; I needed the glimmers of hope I got from reading this book.

I LOVE fairy tale retellings, but I love retellings of lesser-known fairy tales EVEN BETTER!!!! I'd never heard of the Wounded Lion fairy tale before reading this book, and it was cool getting to know the fairy tale through a retelling.

Madi's characters were SO well-written!!!!!!

Calaine (who has the most beautiful name like EVER) is so sweet! I love how seeing how she communicates with people even with the hindrance of her disability. I admire her devotion to helping her brother and how she will sacrifice anything to help those in need.

Renner can see a need and does everything in his power to meet that need. I love how he doesn't let anything stop him from meeting his goals. He is so sweet and protective of Calaine.

The running joke with the lion made it hard for me to keep a straight face while I had slow times at work....

Madi writes the BEST sibling relationships!!!!! Renner's siblings and Calaine's brother....... I LOVED it!!!!! They were written perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you need a sweet, uplifting story that will inspire you to become a better person, Madisyn Carlin's A Silent Hope should leap to the top of your TBR!!!!

I received an ARC from the author. A positive review was not required. My opinions are my own.

Cenua! She was so cute! I love her!
And Jared, at the end of the story...lol...totally will be my brothers once I start dating or anything...lol...

This is my first time reading a Wounded Lion retelling and I enjoyed it immensely. Calaine and Kalen the POVs and main characters were well constructed believable relatable characters. Calaine was treated as worthless because of her deafness. Kalen felt unworthy because he compared himself to his brother. They both learned in the end that every person is made precisely how they should be. That there’s a plan and a purpose. The enemy will try to use it against us. But through our weakness the One who crafted us can shine forth all the clearer if we let Him.
Then there were a the wonderful side characters. Tegh was wonderful. I always love the gruff giant warriors who have a soft spot and are immensely gentle and caring with anyone they love. Princess Renyssa, what a lively spark. And Cenau I loved that adorable ball of fur. Who doesn’t love an adorable lion cub?

All in all? Another wonderful book by Carlin. She always does a fantastic job of weaving together a story of love and hope amidst the darkness. Faith battling fears and doubts. Characters who are relatable in their flaws & strengths, doubts & hopes, disappointments & dreams. Beyond all they point to the Maker.

If you're looking for
- A page turner
- Short, but impactful tale
- Nonmagical fairytale retelling with wonderful worldbuilding
- Sweet romance with intriguing characters
- Light and yet slightly agonizing twists

5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had never heard the story of the "Wounded Lion" before, and it was fantastic. Renner is the sweetest, most gentle soul. Calaine is strong and loves fiercely. The bond they form is amazing, and I loved reading it. This story was soo good!

What can I say? Of course I loved it. <3 Calaine and Renner were both sweet and strong in their own way, and the action and mystery kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. I loved the sweet sibling bonds on display, loved the way Calaine's deafness was worked into the story, and adored certain other side characters who I will not name because of spoilers... XD The lions were quite a cool touch as well!

I was provided with a complimentary ARC copy of this book by the author and was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My Review: 5 out of 5 Stars

‘He’d show them that even physically unimpressive lions could bite.’

Oh. My. Goodness. As soon as I saw that quote, I was hooked. I don’t think I have ever finished a book in 2 days, especially not an e-book, and I am a pretty fast reader. Also, the cover is GORGEOUS.

Characters: I LOVED Renner. Loved, loved, LOVED him. Did I mention how much I loved him? Calaine was also so sweet and needed a hug. Badly. I really enjoyed that she was deaf. My mother has a cousin who is deaf, and I, who took sign language for a time in high school, was able to communicate with her when we interacted. I have not found very many books with deaf characters including the hardships they have when they encounter those who do not know ASL. This book was a wonderful reminder to me to continue to learn sign language. Jared was also awesome (even if he wasn’t in the book much), Fald was hilarious- I loved his sense of humor, the villains were nasty, and the other side characters were also well-done.

Plot/Writing Style: As always, Carlin comes up with the most intriguing (and also hilarious) plots. This one was no different, and I absolutely loved it. The faith content was also lovely, and I cannot help but agree with the beautiful truth contained in this story. Absolutely phenomenal. Well done!

Romance: Clean and sweet. Only a couple kisses and I was ecstatic when Renner signed “I love you”. As soon as he started to learn sign language, all I could think about was “he’s going to sign ‘I love you’ at some point. Oh, this is going to be so sweet.” Renner and Calaine were so wonderful together.

Violence: Non-gratuitous and well-handled.

Overall, A Silent Hope was a really well-done, faith-filled, hilarious novella brimming with hope and a reminder that our worth and value are found in Jesus and Him alone. Another job well done!!

Great book for a great cause

I don't typically read fantasy, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It had plenty of action, and the romance was subtle and sweet. I loved that the heroine was deaf and the lengths the hero went to to converse with her. It was an easy, enjoyable read.

That the proceeds from the book and series it is part of are going to support an organization that fights human trafficking are an added bonus. Definitely check it out!

In "A Silent Hope" by Madisyn Carlin, the age-old question of finding hope in the face of hopelessness takes centre stage as two unlikely souls, Calaine Kalen and Prince Renner Leorin, are brought together by tragedy and necessity. Calaine, a deaf peasant, and Renner, a conflicted prince, embark on a journey filled with challenges, sacrifices, and unexpected twists.

One of the most striking aspects of the narrative is its portrayal of diverse characters facing real-life struggles. Calaine's deafness adds depth to her character, shedding light on the challenges individuals with disabilities encounter, particularly in a world where ignorance and prejudice still prevail. Carlin's depiction of Calaine's experiences serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding.

Moreover, Renner's internal battles with self-doubt and anxiety resonate deeply, offering readers a glimpse into the complexities of mental health. Through Renner's journey, Carlin delicately explores themes of resilience and reminding us that we all have our own strengths and shouldn’t compare ourselves with others.

The supporting cast of characters, from the humorous Fald to the menacing giants, adds layers of richness to the story, enhancing its depth and complexity. Each character is meticulously crafted, contributing to the narrative's immersive quality.

Furthermore, the novel's faith-filled undertones add a layer of spiritual depth, imparting valuable insights on the nature of hope and salvation. Carlin seamlessly weaves themes of faith into the fabric of the story, delivering a powerful message of hope and redemption in the Saviour that resonates long after the final page is turned.

Overall, "A Silent Hope" is a beautifully crafted novella brimming with hope, humour, and heart. Carlin's masterful storytelling and rich character development make for an engaging and uplifting read. Whether you're drawn to tales of romance, adventure, or faith, this book offers something for everyone. It's a testament to the enduring power of hope and the transformative journey of the Spirit.

Even though I expected a happy ending, I had no idea how this would work out or where the story might go along the way.

Calaine is a wonderful young woman from a destitute family who just wants to save her sick brother. Unfortunately, they can't afford the medicine he needs, and no one respectable will either loan her family money or give her a job. What's shocking is how truly good Calaine remains despite her situation. She barely complains, and while she isn't exactly a happy-go-lucky ball of sunshine, she is sweet and calm and innocent. It's amazing that she has remained that way after a childhood of dealing with hatred and only her family for solace. I liked getting to know her, but I'm honestly glad that this story wasn't any longer than it was - I'm not sure I could have handled much more of her perfection! Renner, the prince, was a bit heavy-handed as well. Perhaps this is simply the nature of fairy tales.

There were a few things that gave me pause and at times left a sour taste in my mouth, but overall A Silent Hope is a very good book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, setting, and story. The faith is very well crafted and fits with the people well. I look forward to reading more of the books in this multi-author series, as well as other books by this author! 4 stars.

What a sweet story this was!
I loved the unique perspective of a deaf heroine as well as the world-building elements contained within Leorin & so forth (giants, domesticated lions, etc). Those aspects really made the story stand out to me.

These were such terribly endearing characters; how could you not root for them? Calaine powers through so much from her poverty alone, not to mention being deemed cursed on top of it for her lack of hearing. Renner was a believably caring prince with a basket of comparison complexes & an adorable family loaded with personality. Of course Fald & Cenau were a ton of fun too with their “opposites attract” bond.

I also love the mission of this book collection. I don’t know how I’d fit in time to read 19 more novels, but I’d consider buying them all anyway just because it’s a worthy cause.

PS Spoiler corner:
Can I just say this book contains one of the most adorable squeal-worthy proposals ever? I guess I just did.

The story was good

While I lived the story, there were a lot of typos in it. There were so many different variations of the name “Odey”. And also some sentences just didn’t make any sense. But the story itself flowed and I loved it.

Calaine will do anything to save her brother’s life, including taking work far from home where giants and other dangers lurk. Renner wishes he could sacrifice his life for his brother’s, but he’s stuck being a diplomat while his brother fights.

Both determined to do everything they can to save their siblings, Calaine and Renner become unlikely friends when a plot against the country grows nearby. Can they save the people of Leorin before it’s too late? Will Calaine learn to trust someone with her heart?

“Hope. Such a small word with such incredible significance.”

I loved the world Carlin created, one in which lions and giants roam free. Renner and Calaine are both adorable, even though they both compare Renner to their own brothers. Fald was by far my favorite character. He’s snarky and closed-off, but by the end, he’s learned to trust…but managed to keep a lot of his endearing snark.

The story is described as “faith-filled,” and I enjoyed a fantasy book in which characters openly look to God for guidance and help, and don’t lean on their own strength. Carlin did a great job portraying a Deaf character and the story world through her eyes.

Mild violence. Injuries from battles, as well as some abuse. Not graphic.
Two innocent kisses.
In-world swears only.

A Silent Hope is has all the feels of a perfect book--adventure, sweet romance, and a lingering, warm fuzziness at the end.

There were many elements to this book that gave it a unique flavor. The giants made some scary enemies. The lions were too much fun. Calaine's deafness brought an interesting angle to the story (I can only imagine the challenges in some of those scenes!), and I appreciated how Madisyn displayed the difficulties of deafness while still making Calaine a deep and relatable character.

Renner was a delight with his charm and caring ways. I love a good trope of "royalty-and-peasant-falling-in-love," and Madisyn delivered beautifully on that.

The faith content was strong and lovely throughout the whole story. As the title indicates, it's a story of hope that is sure to leave your heart happy.

Calaine Kalen, a deaf peasant, vows to do anything to save her brother. If that means going to work as a donkey herder for a surly couple who don't care a lick about her, then so be it. Finding an injured man on the riverbank complicates things, but since he vanishes as soon as she turns her back, she bids him "good riddance." Only he returns... and neither of their lives will ever be the same.

I greatly enjoyed A Silent Hope. As in, I read it in two sittings. As in, I stayed up late reading it because I utterly lost track of time. As in, I laughed and exclaimed and smirked my way through it (when I wasn't mentally yelling at the characters for doing something of ill wisdom [okay, that only happened a handful of times. With Renner, mostly, though Calaine got her fair share...].)
All in all... well. There actually wasn't anything I didn't like about this story. I'm quite certain I'll be reading it again.

It’s a fairy tale so the world is unique and “far away” but the issues addressed are very important and near to one’s heart. Topics of faith, hope, self-worth, doing the right thing even if circumstances are difficult, prejudices, true love, etc. are just a few things that grip you and make you turn page after page. The story follows the Wounded Lion fairy tale but adventure, mystery, and beautiful love story from friends to more greatly enrich the novel. The characters are very relatable, the plot is well-developed, and the style is easy to submerge in. Give it a try. Carlin’s stories are definitely ones to stock your bookshelves with.

I was given this book for free but was not required to leave a positive review. My opinion is my own.

I've been trying to finish this for OVER a year and during our family trip to Galveston this week, I FINALLY finished it!! This long-overdue completion isn't due to any smudge on the book; it's just my mood-readerness rearing its ugly head again. I've picked this up several times and made it so far before setting it aside for whatever reason.

A Silent Hope is a sweet and gentle story about self-worth and overcoming obstacles. Renner and Calaine made a cute couple. Fald was great, and the lion cub was too precious.

All in all, an encouraging and well-told story that's great for readers of fairytale retellings, Christian fiction, heroines with disabilities (deaf), and unlikely friendships.

I'm so excited to continue the series asap!

This was a really sweet story! A love that grows between two characters in the middle of a war. Both Calaine and Renner struggle with feelings of inferiority towards others, and must work past that to save their loved ones, and their kingdom.

It’s a beautiful reminder of the value of every life, and that we all have a purpose. We’re all created different from one another and that’s a gift.

Also Calaine is deaf, and I thought that the author did a good job of portraying the unique struggles of a deaf character, but also without her deafness being the main part of the plot, or without that being her entire personality.

I am not familiar with the Wounded Lion story, but this retelling is amazing.
I loved Renner and Calaine. Both of their characters were so well written that it was easy to care about them.
Their relationship develops from friendship to romance, so smoothly, I loved it so much.
Fald was very entertaining, a grumpy but big-hearted giant. The fact that he "hates cats" but dotes on the lion cub is so funny. Sounds like every dad that didn't want a pet.
This is a sweet, clean romance that is soneays to read with characters you can't help but love.
It is definitely one of my favourites from the Hope Ever After collection.

I loved this book! It didn’t take long to get into at all seeing as the very first jumps right in to the story. I love how the author incorporated trusting in Gods plan even when it seems like the worst will happen. I loved how this was fantasy but without all the dragons and stuff like that. I’m not against dragons or anything but this was the first fantasy book I read that didn’t have a dragon and it was kinda nice. I 10/10 recommend this book.

I wish Goodreads allowed half star reviews. I enjoyed this book more than a 3 star but I don't quite think it made 4 stars. I rounded up. It was a little slow start to get in with a lot of the scenes towards the middle feeling about the same (when Renner and Calaine are in the field with the donkeys). I feel like the same could have been conveyed with a few less of these scenes. I do like the inclusion of a deaf main character and I loved seeing how the other characters interacted with her as well as how she interacted with the world due to this disability. The story was brought to a satisfying conclusion. The reader is left with a good feeling and also the notion that the characters have more to face in the future. Overall, I did enjoy reading this book, but due to the drag of some scenes, the feeling of too much mystery in the beginning, and the amount of typos throughout the book I am rating this 3.5 stars (rounded up).

I enjoyed this story. It’s my first “wounded lion” retelling, and I’m happy to now be acquainted with it. The plot was interesting and I liked the characters well enough. My only issue with the book is the amount of typos it contained. It seems the proofreading was rushed or something.
