weirdly insistent that nonbinary people and trans people are inherently different. not all nonbinary people identify as trans but also many nonbinary people very much do? also has good information in terms of legal and medical procedures but not very much of it and only in the last few chapters. most of the book is dedicated to explaining how to support and love a trans child which is great but also is strangely tolerant of shitty behavior and includes a lot of quotes from parents that really aren't supportive of their trans children. i used this book as a potential part of research for a project and i don't know how much of it i'll actually be using. would maybe recommend to a cisgender parent/guardian/caretaker on the grounds that some cis people know next to nothing about trans kids but i think also that could be damaging depending on how some people may really take to having a neutral response (which is encouraged over a negative response, which is somewhat good but also your trans child Will notice that you are being neutral and not encouraging) rather than trying to learn to be fully supportive. would definitely not recommend to other trans people because it's emotionally difficult to read the quotes from the parents who refuse to try and understand their children.

My state & country have been using trans people (& immigrants) as scapegoats for a while now. They keep passing anti trans laws. Millions of dollars have been spent by politicians to bring this small percentage of the population into the forefront. It works because people are uninformed and fearful of situations they don't understand. I don't think this trend will be acceptable for long. More and more people are realizing they know a trans person, or have one or more in their family. Adults who never felt safe to open up about their experiences will continue to come out later in life.

Trans people aren't going anywhere. That's the goal anyway. Too many have died by suicide or been victims of violence.

I've listened to, watched , and read hundreds of stories from different trans folks. I'm very well connected to the emotional, often traumatic, experiences of trans people in the US today.

I read this book to learn from an expert. It was helpful, but at times seemed more directed to people/parents who don't already accept their trans child for who they are. Maybe this view is helpful because there are people in that space. I hope families learn to celebrate their trans loved ones.

The medical information was extensive and helpful, though! I consider it a helpful resource, even if many of the parents quoted in the book don't share my views.

I spent almost as much time googling as I did reading. It is a lot, and overwhelming, and so worth it to support trans and nonbinary folk.
