Darkened Skies #4

Beyond Veiled Destinies

Rate this book
Destiny demands sacrifice.

With Prince Kaius holding three of their friends for ransom, Astrea and Varojin wearily rally the team for a treacherous rescue mission. But when their quest turns into a violent confrontation, Astrea and her friends question how much void magic the Emperor really has under his control.

Amid the rebellion’s growing efforts to thwart both the Emperor and the Paragon, Victor Nazarov retaliates with quick and violent action, leaving both Astrea and the continent at large reeling. Finally out of their depth, Astrea and Varojin seek new allies, but not everyone is willing to trust the Emperor’s rebellious children.

With news that the Emperor is sitting on a large cache of aetherium, the group must venture back into Helosia to prove their loyalty to the cause. But in doing so, they place themselves in greater danger than ever before—a danger that won’t be outrun again.

ARC READER REVIEW!!!!

Okay where do I even begin, reading all the other books in this series I was really looking forward to reading this book and having the opportunity to be an arc reader is amazing.
Let's get into the book I just want to say first that I absolutely adore Jin and Astrea's relationship so much and witnessing how far they've come has been amazing I've also loved reading about all the other characters' love lives, Marko and Adi, Eliana and Nicos, as well as Cressida and Lennor its been a pleasure to read about how they navigate their relationships besides just seeing the main FMC and MMC relationship.
I think it takes a certain author to write characters so well that I feel like I was there with them. Do you know the saying that your brain doesn't know the difference between real people and characters and that's why we feel so much for these people that are written on paper. I think it's not only about that though I think it's a certain type of person who can write characters so well that I cry with them laugh with them and feel everything they feel. Crying at 2 am was not on the list of things I thought I would be doing when I went into reading this book. Now I can't wait for the 5th book to come out because what a cliffhanger honestly. 10/10 would recommend it to someone who has never read a book like this before. This author writes third-person books like no other, I normally do not like third-person books but this one is beautifully written.

Once again H.E. Bauman did a spectacular job on this book! Just as the books before this one I loved it so much!

Bauman really is such a talented writer, one of the best I might say. 🤭 I enjoyed reading this book so much because of her captivating writing style and diverse cast of characters.

The stake gets higher with each book in this series and this one was definitely a nail biter! I have an unhealthy attachment to these characters and I cannot bear to see any of them get hurt.

As always I loved the characters. It’s also so satisfying to see how much the characters have grown since the first book. They are not the same and so much stronger. I’m also living for the side romances in this series! Trust me Bauman writes the best side romances, which are also very diverse (M/F, M/M, F/F).

Speaking of strong characters, the fmc, Astrea is the epitome of a soft but powerful character. I loved seeing her in full power mode so to speak. Her powers are always so interesting to read about and I love how the author shows this through every piece of this book. (She can sense people’s emotions and so much more!🤭)

The mmc, Varojin is such an underrated book boyfriend. I personally think the deserves all the rave. He is so caring and protective over Astrea. I cannot get enough of him 😍

Overall I would absolutely recommend this series if you haven’t read it yet! It’s so diverse and so well written.

This is especially perfect for readers who love Shadow and Bone and maybe even Powerless 🤭

Thank you so much to the author for a gifted copy of this book!

What can I say about this next book in this amazing series? Go read this book!!!

This book has a lot of action, missions and definitely emotions. The author put them trough so much, my heart aches from all they went trough.

Jin and Az are just made for each other! They care so much for each other and want to protect the other no matter what it cost them self 😭

Be warned this book will make you cry! Happy and sad tears but they are worth reading this book.

Astrea again proofs how strong she really is. She still hasn't recovered from the trauma Nazarov did to her and after all the things she went through, she still hold it togheter😭 I wish she just could have a whole day for herself were she could let all the emotions wash over her so she could heal.

Last but not least I want to thank the author for providing me with an earc.

-ARC reader review-

What can I say, as with the entire series, the author has us deeply invested in the characters. Seeing the evolution in the friendships and (budding) romances is incredible, and they really are some of the most organic ones I've read in some time.

The story itself goes further into the quest of our beloved Astrea, who throws herself at her mission and life with an unmatched strength, at least to me. It was a true pleasure, seeing her navigate life and find the power locked away in her, in more ways than one.

All things concluded, this was a book that kept my attention from the first page to the last, and I already cannot wait to read where it goes from here.

ARC REVIEW! No spoilers ✨
After finishing BVD all I could do was stare at the wall and process. Like the rest of the series, the high stakes politics, beautiful magic systems, and fantastic characters were all amazingly breathtaking. The plot twists left me screaming and gasping. I’m pretty sure my heart stopped a few times. I can’t wait for the next book already, my life will be on pause until then 😭 One of my top series hands down!

Sooo Good!

We're back with Astrea and Jin! I loved how both characters grew and changed in this one. We see a different side to Jin that brings a whole new level to his character that I honestly didn't expect this green flag man to have! Astrea continues to go through the ringer in this one as she continues to be haunted in her dreams, tries to figure out more about her parents and her own abilities and then is forced to make a really hard choice that breaks her heart but is then swiftly taken out of her hands anyway. This is book 4 in this series and it's just as strong of an installment as the others. I enjoyed it immensely! I listened to the audiobook which was fantastically narrated by Brielle Rose!! She brought a lot of emotion and depth to these amazing characters!

Here we are on book 4 and settling into this now feels like coming home. I am so in love with this world and the characters. As we have in the other books, book 4in this series picks up right where the last one left off, with Prince Kaius holding two of Jin’s (MMC – a charismatic and handsome Prince/fireweaver) team and Ada’s sister hostage in an attempt to get his two rogue siblings to hand themselves in. As we know by now, that isn’t going to happen! And let’s not forget the Paragon (the league of void magic mages), who are never far behind.

That is just the start of the twisty and action-packed continuation of the political and dangerous world we know and love. For this book, we move beyond Astrea’s (FMC - a highly relatable, academically-minded librarian/lightbringer) personal growth, which was the core theme for the previous two books, and really get stuck into the action and politics, while still keeping true to Bauman’s character driven story-telling. This makes room for my favourite thing about this book - Astrea playing a more central and vital role in Jin’s team of warriors. She’s finally getting into her stride and really getting to show her abilities. This also means that her team and fellow warriors were finally taking her seriously and relying on her as a true team member.

As with the rest of the series, this book will appeal to a very wide audience - from those who love high fantasy to those who are here for the action, adventure and hidden motivations. We can also continue to relish in the mountain of perfectly-pitched romance that has had all the romance/romantasy lovers hooked since book 1 (*swoon*).

I was delighted to receive e-ARC copies of this book in advance of its release and cannot wait for the next and final instalment. I would highly recommend this series to those who love political intrigue, characters with complex motivations and unique magic systems.

If you’re looking for me, I’ll be in therapy 😭

To say I loved this book is an understatement. This book was so immersive and detailed. The pacing was perfect for how much happened in a relatively short period of time! I was laughing, crying and yelling along with the characters (sorry neighbors). Bauman did such an amazing job as always hooking us into the story!! Her characters are all so brilliant. You feel like part of their big found family going through all the trials with them.

I’ve said all this time about how Jin needs a hug, but I’m desperate to hug Astrea. I somehow want to reach through the page and tell her she’s doing amazingly, that rest is productive, that she’s appreciated and strong and loved and worthy whether things go as planned or not. And of course to comfort her, because she’s been through so damn much.

And it’s not like I haven’t wanted to comfort Az before. She’s always deserved that hug. But there was something about this book that made it feel more dire. Like the end of her rope has been sneaking up on her, and on us too, and it’s just become more apparent as a reader that that’s where she is.

Beyond that, I adored the continuation of the healthy relationship dynamics across the board, romantic and familial and friendship alike. The frequent “I love yous” and support and check-ins make me all warm and fuzzy. That’s not always all shown on-page in fantasy books, so to see it so normalized in this series is incredible!

Nazarov continues to be absolutely despicable. Just when you think you’ve figured out his worst, he proves you wrong. This isn’t a villain to fall for. It’s a villain you want to push off a cliff. It’s the villain you want to see gone. Same with Kaius, honestly.

None of this touches on the twists, many of which had me crying or gasping for various reasons, or my UTTER NEED for the next book. All while balancing the cozy and soft and emotions of being human 💜

H.E., you’ve done it again 🥹

The following is my honest arc review for the 4th book in the Darkened Skies series, Beyond Veiled Destinies. I was so excited when I saw it in my inbox and I was ready to dive back into this world. Thank you H.E Bauman for this opportunity

We picked up right where we left off in the previous book, with Kaius holding 3 of their hostage. I found this book to be more politics and plot heavy, and with an overall more serious tone. That’s not to say that there wasn’t lighter scenes and spice, however as a whole it was more serious. Nonetheless it was written very well and wasn’t too heavy.

I was on the edge of my seat much more for this one than I was for the others. Just when you think all the characters have gone through and experienced enough, they’re hit with another twist, especially that ending. Not sure how I’ll survive to the next one. I read it and couldn’t believe it was the last page 😅

On a more lighter note: I loved how all the characters are given their time to shine, especially Jin and Astrea. Their relationship is so wholesome and supportive. We definitely see all the friendships and relationships strengthen and deepen.

Overall this was a perfect installment to the series, it’s written so well and I really can’t wait for the next one!

💫 Spoiler-Free ARC Review 💫

I started this book with every intention to take detailed notes and annotations only to be swept up into this gripping story. My notes are now just a series of emojis that spiraled into nothing but highlights among the occasional incoherent screams in my mind.
What. A. Rollercoaster.

Not only is the plot intense, the stakes raised to an all-time high since the beginning of the series, but the dialogue is so authentic that, at times, I actually forgot that I was reading. It’s so very immersive. The relationships are organic and relatable, the character growth is satisfying and realistic.

I love Varojin. I love Astrea. I love them as a couple… more and more with each book.

Some themes you'll find in BVD

✨ Chosen Family
✨ Prophecies
✨ A cinnamon roll MMC (who would k!ll if you mess with his love)
✨ A gentle and anxious FMC (who can be savage if you push her)
✨ Political intrigue that’s actually intriguing???
✨ Post-Industrial vibes
✨ Heart-stoppingly High Stakes
✨ Light and dark magic
✨ Plot twists, holy crap!

I need the last book of the series in my hands yesterday! :D

This is an ARC reader review.

By Beyond Veiled Destinies, I've been quite invested in the survival and the happiness of all the characters. So, you can only imagine how happy I am to see that despite all the action going on, there were still a lot of quiet times when we still got to know more about the characters - and have them breathe a bit too!

I do have to say that Beyond Veiled Destinies is a lot more fast-paced than the previous books. There's a lot of movement and transitions between one place to another. I was feeling a bit restless about the lack of breaks that the characters were taking, which makes sense because I'm sure that they are too. Bauman did such a great job of making us feel exactly what her characters are feeling through the book's pacing.

While there's still a lot of mysteries going on around this book, there's also a lot more love (familial, romantic, and friendship) to go around.

As always, HE Bauman has a way with words and creating a world that keeps on growing. Beyond Veiled Destinies is the 4th book in her Darkened Skies series that follows Astrea and her friends as they try to continue their mission.
A lot happens in this book. There were many emotions especially towards the end of the book. The main FMC, Astrea, has really grown throughout the series and she is really coming into her powers. I cannot wait to find out more about them!
And all the side characters. They are written so well that you cannot help but be invested in their lives as well. I have always loved Adi and there were so many moments in this book that made him even better.
Couples goals goes to Az and Jin. They are so good together and show what a healthy relationship can look like.

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my gosh!

The twist, the turns, the politics, the magic! This book has you feeling all the feelings. Sitting on the edge of your seat. Turning page after page searching for the answers and what happens next. It’s a long book and I flew through it. Needing to know what happens next.

And…. When you think you can’t love Jin and Az anymore. Their relationship is so precious. And watching them grow and love each other is wonderful.

All the characters are wonderful. I love them all. But Jin and Az have that special place in my heart.

I can’t wait for the last book to see how this series concludes. But damn! This was a great one

As the fourth installment of a series - H.E. does it again as this book took me on a rollercoaster that would not stop! It made 600+ pages just fly by! So much happens and without being spoilery - I loved all the action, slices of love, and even comedic, heartfelt moments. More info gets revealed in some ways regarding the Paragon and the group works harder to bring down Emperor Auris. I loved the tidbits into addressing mental health and the progression of Astrea communicating more about her feelings. Jin is the biggest green flag boyfriend that I just can’t help but gush when it comes to the two of them. I love all the side characters and I’m excited to read the final installment of the series in the fall.

This series has captivated me since day one. I love Astrea and Jin. Their love story is beautiful and somewhat tragic. To think of what could have been if the emperor hadn't sent Jin away all those years ago. But I'm a sucker for a second chance, and these two have endured emotional turmoil in every book. It's what keeps me coming back for more. I want to see how their story plays out. Even if it has me ugly, crying in certain parts.

I love this series so much- and this book was no exception! I loved the growth in the characters- and there was several scenes I was HOPING we'd get in the series, but wasn't sure we'd get to see.

It was super fun reading this book, and then going back and reflecting on my thoughts from book 1 and seeing where the characters started and where they're going.

If you're just tuning in aka haven't read the first three books, stop what you're doing and GO BACK AND READ THEM :)

wow… I have no idea what to say but that ending actually made me cry 😅🥲😩

Seeing the developments of the team, Astrea & Jin, and the story was wonderful. I love H.E. Bauman’s ability to tell a story and I feel that she just keeps getting better and better.

I actually enjoyed the pacing of this book much more than the others (part of why it’s rated higher) and I feel like we got to see more action scenes in this book than in the last.

It’s a fantastic read and I highly recommend!

This series has me so deeply in the trenches that I know when it’s actually over I’ll be thinking about it randomly for the rest of time. I am rooting for this couple, I am championing their cause with them, and I am feeling all the feelings in real time as they go through it. If you are interested in this story, I highly recommend the audiobooks-they are so good. Also, I’m not ready to talk about the last few chapters or that cliffhanger..

If you're a fan of the other books in this series, you'll enjoy this one. It continues moving the story forward and style, pacing, etc. is what you would expect after the first three books. The characters remain strong. This one seemed to have more sex scenes than the previous (I may be wrong about that!) but they're easy to skip past if that's not your thing.

✨ARC Review Without Spoilers✨

I can’t possibly sum up my feelings about this book into a review. Beyond Veiled Destinies was my most anticipated book of the year and I was not disappointed! 🧡 There is SO MUCH action in this book. I spent a good bit of it internally screaming - in fear and in excitement… and sometimes both at the same time. 😅
I was already hopelessly in love with Jin, but this book cemented him at the top of my list. I loved getting to see more of the intelligent, tactical side of him that we came to love in Forged by Flames. You won’t find a better stabby but sweet, protective and deadly love interest. 😍 Speaking of deadly, our little librarian is also becoming quite the force and I adore her evolution. 😈

Small details that I loved:
✨Captain Auris 😎
✨the gang getting to play Mystery Inc again 😁
✨Exciting (and evolving) system of magic
✨Az in her OP era
✨High stakes politics
✨ABSOLUTELY NOT LORD VICTOR NAZAROV
✨Plot twistsss that hit HARD
✨ Loving all of the “side characters” just as much as the mains 🥹 (I need novellas for each of them. Please, I’m begging.)

In depth review:
The characters in this series are just entirely too lovable because I’m emotionally attached to all of them. 😅 their interactions are entertaining and work so well with the overall plot. The pacing in this book was flawless. Every single chapter was exciting and there was a perfect balance of feel-good family antics and soul-wrenching danger. Throughout the entire series I’ve appreciated that the military strategy, political discourse, and execution of missions are just so well written and this book was another example of that. I absolutely love intense fight scenes and Beyond Veiled Destinies gave me so much more than I could have asked for on that front. My biggest praise for this book, and for the series in general, is that I have formed SO MANY theories about what was coming and I am still gasping at the plot twists, even 4 books in.

HOLY SMOKES what a ride!!!!

This book had everything, EVERYTHING, that I needed and wanted from it. I ate it up, probably a bit too fast because now I have to sit in wait whilst my arc reader friend finishes🙃, but I couldn’t have paced myself if I had tried.

I can’t even begin to put into words how much I love the main circle of characters in this series. Jin and Astrea have a love that is to die for. They’re my favourite lethal lovers. The side plots with Adi and Cress were perfect and I can’t wait to see more of their stories. And Ellie, oh my god ELLIE. Queen of my heart I adore her. Petition for them to just give her the throne now. The Helosians and The Paragon can’t compete where they don’t compare.

The action in this installment had my heart bursting through my ribcage with adrenaline as if I was right there with them, and I love that H.E. Bauman is able to create those scenes that garner that effect in people. It’s priceless.

Beyond Veiled Destinies was so perfect, so incredibly well written and beautifully executed. I’ll be waiting on baited breath for book five!!
