This is just one of the many rules Benjamin Riley Franklin has been expected to live by. It’s also the rule that will test him the most in the wake of his parents’ divorce. After moving to Indiana with his mom and younger sister, he is forced to live with and work for his abusive grandfather. Just when Ben’s anger and life begin to spiral out of control, he finds hope in an unexpected

It's a topic that has passionate readers on both sides of the some need them and others hate them for fear of spoilers. And, of course, there are those who fall somewhere in between.
While I write fiction, I try to pack each of my books with a strong emotional punch. Because of this, I've always respected that the topics in my books may be triggering for some. In hopes of finding a solution that will meet the needs of the entire spectrum of readers, a list of content warnings for each of my books can be found on my
There are days when I still can’t believe that I’m a writer. I’m so blessed to have been given the opportunity to write the stories that speak to my heart. My goal as a writer is to not only create a means of escape for the reader but to also generate an emotional connection between the reader and my characters. The stories I create are fictional, yet true to life.
This book is not at all what I was expecting, in a good way! There were depictions of pretty spot on people who are "set in their ways," and those trying to break that generational way of thinking. We follow a teen boy who is struggling with moving when he meets a girl up in a tree. That's all I'll say for now....This book was full of ways to combat other people's opinions and ways of thinking along with an element of mystery. I would recommend it!
FAVORITE QUOTE: "We are often much harder on ourselves than we are with others. It's easier to use logic rather than emotions when you remove yourself."
I have now officially read all 4 of the books written by Carrie (thus far - I hope there’s more to come!) and I enjoyed this one just as much as her others even though it was different. This book was a heartfelt coming-of-age novel that had themes of identity, family dynamics, and the transformative power of unexpected relationships. I thought this was inspiring and thought-provoking. I loved seeing Ben’s growth throughout the story and how Ren helped him to heal. I also loved Ren’s “rules” and advice she gave Ben to help him navigate his new world.
