4.5! Been wanting to read ever since I signed up .. definitely lived up to the hype! I feel like I related so much because just when things go great you want to run before you get hurt. Hailey and Eric’s story is a whirlwind read!

2.5⭐️
I was so excited to read this book, but eventually, my excitement lessened as I felt the story was a little bit flat. I believe it needed more enthusiastic events to stir up the plot.
Also, Hailey annoyed me a lot as she cried almost every single chapter. She may be kind, but she made me annoyed at times.
I think some parts were rushed and needed to be discussed at a slower pace.
This book had so much potential at the beginning, but it lost its spark with the rushed events, Hailey’s cries and excitement-less plot.
The author herself knows how to express emotions and describe the surroundings, so I believe the next one will be way better☺️

* Thankyou to the author for a copy of this ARC

"Each insult, each cutting remark from my father, has left indelible scars. While the scars from my past may not be immediately apparent, they've etched within me a sense of caution that colors my perception of love."

So, before I started this book, I could feel the start of a book slump. I decided to start the first chapter of the six books I have left to read for the month of November. I got to this book, started reading the first page and saw a FMC with daddy issues (check), then I see her name is the same as mine (double check), I'm already highlighting parts from page one (triple check), and 164 pages (sold).

This book tells the tale of Hailey, who is struggling with understanding what true love looks like. She feels she needs to back away from dating because she is scared that finding unconditional love in a romantic relationship just doesn't exist for her. Until along comes sweet Eric.

Obviously, I loved Eric, but I also loved all of the people in her life who also loved her unconditionally (not in a romantic way) and how, along her journey she discovers that.

You get:
• FMC Daddy issues
• Insta love
• Virgin FMC
• Lovable MMC
• Found family
• Short read
• Verbal & physical abuse
• Mental health representation
• Finding yourself

The book definitely has its share of tough subjects to get through, but I would describe it as a feel-good story. I would highly recommend!

Ps. @amyroseauthor ... how did you happen to write a story so similar to my actual life? Eerie 🙃

"I suppose we're all shaped by our experiences," I begin tentatively. "And sometimes, it takes the right person to inspire us to share those experiences. I've always had a love for stories. They have a way of transporting us to different worlds, helping us understand ourselves and others. Yet my story ... well, it's been a bit of a journey."
"Mine too. Maybe one day we will be in a place to share our stories with each other."
"Maybe."

This is a quick little read!

If you like
-coffee shop
-a littleeee bit of insta-love
-best friends
-quick pace
-and just a sweet little time
You should definitely check this out!

This was a sweet, easy read. The pace was super speedy; in fact, I wish the author had slowed down! Our characters lacked a great deal of depth, and though serious situations were happening, I found it hard to connect at times. The FMC also just started crying a lot. Like a lot. I get it girl, but watch out for that if that’s something that bugs you.

Thank you SO much to the author for the eARC; I had a wonderful time reading! I am voluntarily leaving this review.

It took me awhile to finish this novella. And it should be a quick read but I struggled to finish this that I had to convince myself not to DNF.

I can't connect to any of the characters and I feel like Hailey is always crying in almost every chapter. It also felt like this was written for YA audiences even though the characters are almost or in their mid-20s already.

I think it would've been better if there are more background stories with her stepfather. His death will have an even more impact if so. Her narcissistic father is also so random and weird? And her relationship with Eric too. One minute she's trauma dumping the next they have a “connection”. Please. Everything just fell forced and flat.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to be able to review this ARC.
I really wanted to be more connected to the characters in this book but I found that I didn't really feel like any single character was fleshed out enough to make a connection with. The book has more of a novella feel, and it feels rushed even for a novella. Given the TW at the beginning of the book I thought there would be a lot more concentration on the healing portion of Hailey's journey, and although we do get to see her finally stand up for herself this part of the story felt like subplot.

For me there were a lot of missing elements and a lot of contradictory behaviors from some of the characters and a lot of 'meat' was really missing from the events in this book. At the end I didn't find the relationship between Hailey and Eric to be a realistic one. Their dialogue always seemed awkward and flat.

I struggled also with Hailey's attitude at the beginning of her relationship with Eric, her feelings were up and down a lot that I was beginning to wonder if she was really even interested in him. I think my biggest 'huh?' moment was finding out that Hailey lost her virginity to Eric and it was not discussed a single time before or after the event. I 100% believe that we all get to decide whether or not it means something to us as individuals and that it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be talked about. However, Scarlett says that she knows it is important to her, so it felt out of character to breeze by something that meant something to her.

This was a quick, but easy and good read! I would have loved to see more into backgrounds on some more characters! But this was a story on Hailey and her difficult relationship with her father and how it changed the trajectory of her life. It changed her outlook on love and relationships. Look into trigger warnings for some!

Agreeing with other's sentiments, this novella lacked an incredible amount of substance. Of course, novellas have storylines that move quick, however, this one sprinted to the ending, leaving much to be desired.
Every character presented has a story to tell, and a reader is intrigued, only to be let down.
Hailey and Eric have absolutely no chemistry. They had a nice meet-cute, but that's really it. The author did not give these characters a chance to really fall in love. Hailey just trauma dumped on Eric and used that as their "love" connection.
And a note of Hailey's trauma, it's not ever really explained. Yes, her father is clearly verbally/mentally abusive. However, a reader only gets surface-level text messages and a forced confrontation as the only evidence that he's terrible. Not to mention, Hailey does defend him quite a bit. But suddenly jumps to blocking and pressing charges, literally in the blink of an eye. Honestly, if the author had added a therapy session here and there, it would have been more plausible.
Finally, Hailey's relationship with her step-father was such a missed opportunity. Here is a man who owed her nothing yet stepped up to be the father figure she yearned for. And as a cruel twist of fate, he's terminal. I really wish the author would have dug down deeper into their bond and how it (positively) influenced Hailey's view of men.
Side note: Not telling someone you've never had sex before you both end up sleeping with each other is definitely going to cause issues down the road.
As someone else said, the story has great bones, but absolutely no meat.

Big thanks to Amy Rose for sending me the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

So, the story digs into the complicated relationship between Hailey and her dad, showing how it shapes her views on love and the people around her.

What I really liked is that the story tackles a topic I don't often come across—mental abuse. I enjoy reading books that touch on sensitive, real-life stuff like this. I love the whole small-town vibes and the coffee shop where Hailey works. It gives off this cozy feel, and I really want to visit that cafe.

I gave it 3 stars because I wanted more details and depth in Hailey's relationships, both with her biological and stepdad. Also, her connections with her bestie and Eric felt kinda shallow, just on the surface. I didn't feel a deep connection between them. I usually like love-at-first-sight stories, but the insta love in this one didn't quite convince me and left me pretty disappointed. I think the story needs to be longer, with some pivotal events to spice up the plot.

Overall, this was a quick and easy read. Looking forward to reading more in the future!

Very fast-paced book. Definitely an easy read. I do wish there was a little bit more background on the main characters, but you do still develop an attachment to Hailey as her character has gone through so much with her father. Amy did a great job on this book, especially conveying the emotions Hailey has about her father and how conflicted she is about her feelings.

I had the privilege of being an arc reader for "that's what love is" by Amy Rose.

The author had a story trigger warning list; abuse from a parent and death of a parent.

With a dedication like that, I feel like maybe the TW should be a little elaborate. Though reading that dedication, I started to question if I was in the right mental state to read this.

After seeing the short playlist recommendations, I definitely started to question if I could handle this story..especially since prior to this book I have heard those songs and know the theming of those song..

I feel like the love interest segwaying after the guilt from no contact dad falls flat. I could see what the author was trying to do but it feels like it's not working.

By the 12% mark, I felt like the story was repeating itself.

At the 12% mark I felt like this story was a therapy homework; something for a client and a therapist to read rather than the whole world, especially with the way it writes in grounding techniques without calling them grounding techniques.

At the 15% mark, I felt like there was too much information while too little information at the same time.

I found it a bit creepy that Eric meet Hailey once, than asked her out, now all of a sudden their on cloud 9 for each other. I feel the storyline between them should've been elaborated a bit more before dating was on the cards.

I don't understand the use of Itatlics used during present scenes. Bit of an odd creative choice there.

By the 31% mark, I felt like this story was too much of a wattpad story. Where it wanted to repeat itself, rush it self to "key details" while skimming over key details at the same time, the need to make the MC "not like other girls" and the drive to make her as depressing as possible until she meets a boy.

Like, I get this story was supposed to be about daddy issues and the affects of daughters.. as someone who told their dad to "get fked" when she was 13 and has only spoken to him 3 times since turning 18, I get what it's like to have a complicated relationship with her dad and how it may affect her own relationships towards men in general..and I get every daughter experiences a different relationship with their dad..

But this story almost felt like it was pushing the "bad dad" story for all the wrong reasons, almost like a gimmick to drive audiences to the story..similar to how a wattpad writer would do their story.

Unfortunately as I finished the story, I realised this doesn't focus on what the author thinks this story focuses on. I went in thinking it was a story of healing from bad parents instead it focused more on a chance encounter with a guy; who she's instantly smitten and in love with, even if they barely know each other.

The story glosses over the bad dad story elements, glosses over the step dad dying story element.

All the characters felt like they all spoke the voice, which meant reading the dialogue just felt the same..rather than individual.

My mental state was able to fully cope throughout this story, the TWs did their purpose but again, I felt like the author forgot what the brunt of their story was supposed to be.

I wish Amy Rose best of luck with their writing career, but their not an author for me.

I hope everyone finds the Eric to their Hailey 🥹

Hailey is just trying to take each day as it comes. All while dealing with the up and down roller coaster of words from her dad. Thankfully she has her long time bestie (who is also her boss) and mom & step dad to keep her spirits high. But with the continued damage her dad continually gives her, she refuses to let love in from someone. One day, Eric, a construction worker comes into Haileys work after moving back into town and introduces himself because she has caught his eye. But Hailey only accepts to being friends because love is not her thing. But when Hailey finds herself going through a major change in her life, she finds that she doesn’t want to do life alone anymore and is willing to give Eric a chance. But it wouldn’t be Hailey’s life without some obstacles. Will Eric stick around & will Hailey let him with her constant worry of insecurities of love?

📚 Contemporary Romance
📚 Emotional Struggles
📚 Stranger To Lovers
📚 Slow Burn-Build Up /No Spice
📚 Single POV

This was my first read by Amy and I felt so connected to this story. It was quick novella style story. The emotions in this story continued to pull me in. It has no “spice” but you felt the emotions so strongly between Hailey & Eric. Definitely swoooon worthy 🥰

First off Disclaimer received ARC in exchange for an honest review

2.5 ⭐️ I want to start off by saying I enjoyed the overall plot of the story a lot. Who hasn’t had to deal with someone like the FMC’s dad at some point in their life? And the way he’s portrayed was so accurate I had to chuckle. Definitely sounds about right ESPECIALLY the hot and cold behavior. Personally however, for me I do agree that the rest of the story fell flat in the delivery. All the characters relationships and interactions together were all surface level. Most of the time the dialogue consisted of are you okay, how are you and thanking someone for something. I just wanted to see more especially between Hailey and Scarlett who have been best friends for almost 20 years and yet all their convos consisted of are you okay and do you want to hang out. Also the FMC and her love interest never bridge that gap of surface level conversations. They never had deep talks together besides that one on the couch where she tells him her step dad is dying and her bio dad is abusive WHICH his reaction after is I’m so sorry and then tries to sleep with her.. Like SIR?? Did she or did she not just trauma dump 1 min ago and you’re already trying something PLUS this was their first “date”…??? That rubbed me wrong. And when they did have sex idk I just wished they had a more intimate talk about how they feel like they never even said I love you the whole story so it kind of left me hanging in the end.

Plus the plot of the story centered around her dad being abusive and her kind of navigating that and when that part came around it was a tiny little section and I felt it was a bit rush in my opinion. I know this is a romance book, but I would have loved to see FMC journey and process navigating that more and the romance/love story be a second/side story instead. FMC has been through a lot and it would have been nice to see her grief and growth more than her relationship. (Also never have said this for a story but I wish there was more monologue instead of dialogue! I don’t think it needed as much as it had and would have loved her thoughts more!)

I just finished reading this ARC last night and 🥺. This story follows Hailey, a woman who has to overcome her trust issues with men caused by the mistreatment of her father. (I mean, same 😅.)

Do check the trigger warnings if content like this is not for you. It does not go into horrific detail but it is mentioned and situations do occur throughout the book.

This is a short read and very down-to-earth. It feels like your being told a love story by your best friend. This story did become emotional for me and well up on certain parts as you could feel the sadness and hurt of Hailey. There were some experiences Hailey had that hit very close to home for me as I had almost identical situations in my life. I think the representation and empathy I can feel for Hailey is what really made me enjoy this story and become fully engrossed in certain moments.

While I did enjoy the book, there were things I wish were different that I think could be potential dislikes:

• I do wish the book was longer. Some of the conflicts that arose throughout the book resolved really quickly in my opinion. They felt kind of brushed off.

• I know the main focus was on Hailey, but I also would of liked to know more about Eric. There were parts where I felt Hailey opened up a lot to him and it didn't feel like he offered the same in return.

• While the relationship with Hailey and her father is the main struggle for her throughout the book, it isn't deeply dove into. The events feel kind of sporadic but that is what makes it feel like a story being told by someone you know. I feel like Hailey and Eric could of been explored more throughout the story which goes back to me wishing the story was longer.

It is a very cute story in my opinion, and if you relate to Hailey in any way, it'll pull on your heart strings.

*** I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own. You may love it or hate it. ***

This is a short read, but worth every page!!

This book follows Hailey who works in her best friend's coffee shop in a small town. Hailey is craving true love. She believes she is not worthy of true love from anyone since her biological father is always verbally abusive to her and tells her otherwise. This causes Hailey to have self-doubt and low self-esteem. Hailey finds out that her stepfather, the man who shows her that fatherly love is real is dying and she does not know how to handle it all. But she meets Eric who she has a hard time letting into her heart and has a lot of doubts about. Eric slowly starts to show her that he is there for her in the hard times with her stepfather and he wants all in with Hailey. Hailey has a really hard time with this but she slowly starts to let him in and opens up more to him. As Hailey starts to let him in more she gets more excited as to what's to come and Eric shows her what the meaning of true love is.

This was a short read for me however I loved it. I was starting to get into a book slump where I would start to read a book and seemed like I couldn't finish it or it would drag on. But not this one! I could not put this book down at all. There were little funny moments, sad moments, loving moments, etc. It was just overall amazing! This is definitely a heartwarming book that will pull at your heartstrings and with an FMC that starts off with doubts and low self-esteem to finding someone who loves her for her and not who they want her to be without asking for anything in return.

Trigger warnings: Family trauma, emotional, and mental abuse.

That's What Love Is will take you on a journey of Hailey's experience of emotional abuse, a childhood trauma that will lead into adulthood, and how finding love can give you the strength to move forward in life. From a young age, the bad outweighed the good times with Hailey's biological father. Although her stepfather stepped to the plate, Hailey always wanted her dad to show more love and compassion. Luckily she had her best friend Scarlett who kept things raw and realistic for her throughout the book. When Hailey needed her she was there as her true ride-or-die! The absolute best part is when she meets Eric who turns out to be her knight in shining armor. For most of the book, Hailey struggles with letting her walls down and allowing Eric in on what she may consider a dysfunctional life. What Hailey doesn't realize at first is that Eric is a truly wholesome, attentive, and romantic gentleman. Her walls begin to come down and the love story will have you speed reading through this book.

I am giving this a 3-star rating only because I wanted more storyline to her past with her biological and stepfather. However, if you're looking for a YA love story this one is for you! It was a light and easy read that I easily could've finished in one sitting.

Thank you #AmyRose for this ARC in return for an honest review. I look forward to your future books and wish you the best of luck!

This was a quick read and I did enjoy it just felt like it was missing something. I wish we got to see a deeper connection with Hailey and her best friend of 20 years, Scarlett. We get to see Hailey’s journey with her abusive father and how she lost her stepfather. Eric had just moved back to town and went to the coffee shop where Hailey works. After a few times Eric showed up they did hang out. Hailey was not ready for a relationship but they seemed to move into a relationship really fast. On their first day Hailey unloaded a lot of trauma onto Eric and then he tried to sleep with her which kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

After Hailey lost her stepfather she called Eric for comfort. Her abusive father did show up and towards the end she cut things off for the time being but I feel like it was just rushed and it was only a tiny little part. I was happy for Hailey when she finally stood up to her father so she can work on her healing!I do wish we got to see more of the relationship with her father from the past instead of just the text messages. Also, to see more of her and Eric's relationship once that formed. They both seemed to work well together.

I really really enjoyed this story.

I got this book during stuff your kindle day and I'm glad I did
hailey seems to be very sensitive and does feel like a bit of a cry baby but I don't blame her, maybe if her dad wasn't such a jerk she wouldn't be the way she is. I actually have been mental abused like this with my mother, its not easy to go through. Not everyone has a bad parent and i think people who read this book need to keep an open mind.

I read other reviews before sharing mine and while I do agree that some areas kind of felt flat, I don't agree that the story is bad because someone may not relate to it or because it wasn't what someone expected.

It feels raw & real. The only complaint I have is that I wanted more memories or backstory with her dads. What was her dad thinking sending her messages like that? Idk how hailey dealt with it I wouldve thrown my phone at the wall.

I have a blue collard man myself , he's the sweetest guy, it was nice seeing someone like him in abook like this. brings back a lot of memories with my own mom and my husband and the things I went through.

I wanted so much to like this book and sat on reviewing for a while, but decided to gather my thoughts overall.
I think this was an easy, quick read. But I think it lacked connection to anyone. For characters in their 20s I often felt I was reading about people in their early teens. The way they spoke to each other and Hailey as a whole I just kept envisioning kids maybe in 10th grade.
I also usually can get behind male main characters with golden retriever energy, but something about Eric just didn’t do it for me. Being a man with a blue collar career I was hoping for some of that rough around the edges vibes at times but we didn’t get any of that.
I also wish we had been able to see more of a connection with Ray and how Hailey’s birth father treated her and her mother.
I found at times there were too many adjectives used, like a student trying to meet a required word count.
Overall, I think if someone is looking to reach their reading goal for the year, this is a quick and simple read to get through, but it lacked much sustenance or depth.

It appears that more exciting content may be on the way based on her Instagram posts, and this book seems to like an introduction, so if soo...PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER BOOK I'd love to read it!
4.5 STARS.
This piece is concise and to the point, yet it brings enough of the story to leave me feeling thoroughly satisfied.

Firstly, the portrayal of the game nights in the cafe is so vivid that it's made me want to visit it myself! Additionally, this story delves into a common experience that many people have faced dealing with a toxic parent. Amy's deep exploration of Hailey's emotions is truly commendable. I believe that a lot of readers will be able to connect with the main character.

Personally, I may not relate to Hailey's experiences, but I could strongly empathize with her pain and heartbreak, especially in dealing with her dad's hurtful text messages. The way she was subjected to such messages is truly distressing. It's great to see her find support in someone like Eric. I'd love to see more romance between the two.

The following review was based off of an ARC copy I have received. The following review is from my own personal thoughts and options.

The excitement I had waiting to read this book was immense. Truly while waiting, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. However, once I got the book and dove into it, my excitement started to dwindle down. Sadly, I found the story a little ho-hum for lack of a better word.

The story needed some more oomph. A little something something to help stir the pot as some would say. Another thing, consistent speed to the story would help this as well. Some parts kinda dragged by while others were too fast paced.

The FMC, Hailey, was sweet with a kind soul, but the fact that she cried every chapter or nearly every chapter seemed a little excessive. Other than that, the emotions of the characters were spot on as well as the descriptions of places and events.

Over all, this book had immense potential, however the plot and inconsistency the speed and plot of the story, caused me to loose interest. Here's to hoping the next book will be better.

Wow! What a great introduction to Hailey and Eric's story. Hailey is strong and persevering, yet vulnerable and raw. She has set boundaries with who she allows or doesn't allow to come into her life, but struggles to maintain those same boundaries with people already in her life such as her verbally abusive father. Her day to day is affected drastically by the toxicity of her relationship, but she desperately holds onto hope for change. Eric is the man every woman desires - level headed, patient, kind-hearted and reliable. Their meeting is laced with interest, but starts as a friendship that builds slowly through trust and connecting, not just physical attraction. While there is a little steam, this slow-burn, friends-to-lovers contemporary romance is closed door. A quick read that had me turning pages the whole time. With Eric's help, Hailey overcomes loss and grief, but learns to not only trust again, but believe that she can actually be loved n- this is a book you don't want to miss out on!

A light read, but not very entertaining

This would be a good read for a young adult, not a mature reader. If that is you, then the relevant parts of my review ends here for you.

For others seeking a deep love story, here is my assessment. I'm an avid reader of many genres, so I have high expectations that stories should be entertaining. This was a story about what someone thinks a love story should be about. This story tried to make an emotional plea but the intellectual parts that build on the heartstrings was just skipped. There was nothing that made me as a reader want to engage with the protagonist. The mood swings of the protagonist caused whiplash, and did not build up to be the angst-filled story the author wished it to be. There was no climax, just a thousand buildups resolved with one blaise sentence. I almost always finish a book that I started b because I want to say I have it a fair try. I finished the book but not with the usual satisfactory feeling I get at that last page. I accept I may not be the audience for this author.

Thoughts💭
This is a great and sweet short story.

I definitely enjoyed reading the book, very meaningful and show what love is supposed to be like.

It was adorable reading Haileys & Eric’s relationship develop. And reading how Erics shows her that she deserves love. omg Definitely a sweetheart and one of the best book boyfriends 💗

One thing I will say though is I wanted more, more of Eric. You see Hailey Side, but Eric has issues too, and it would have been great to.
As loving someone involves 2 people.

ARC Review

This was a sweet novella, but the reason for my rating was that there were moments that I wished had been handled with more sensitivity, lacking the necessary context. One in particular, when Hailey was told that her stepdad's cancer made him weaker and was hospitalised, her choice to go partying over being by his side felt abrupt, leaving her mother all alone.

The story overall felt hurried. While I am glad it touched on real-life situations, such as Hailey having a very troubling relationship with her narcissistic father, there was not much of background information to go on. Her stepdad's passing was not given enough attention. It focused more on Hailey's reluctance to commit to a relationship and then diving headfirst into a serious relationship with Eric, a man she had just met at the coffee shop. This overshadowed the important aspects mentioned before, making this story feel rushed and somewhat imbalanced.

That's What Love Is by Amy Rose

Cute short Novella about a young woman who had to find strength in herself to tell her verbally abusive father that she will no longer tolerate his behavior towards her. She then meets a nice wholesome boy named Eric, whom she slowly allowed herself to open up to a possibility of a healthy relationship. I wish the story was longer and that there was a little bit more plot and substance in the story. I needed more backstory of her past relationship with her father. Check it out! There is no spicy scenes, this book is a slow burn. The story is more geared towards emotional connections and unesolved childhood trauma/issues. Interesting book for sure!

3/5 stars ☆☆☆ just because I wish it had a little bit more plot to the story , maybe a little bit more background as far as her and her biological father in contrast to her step father whom she adored.

First of all, thank you Amy Rose for this ARC. 🤍 I am so, so sorry to report an unpopular opinion but I didn’t love this book. I really wanted to love it. I requested this ARC because it takes place in Beaufort, NC which holds a special place in my heart. I felt sympathy for Hailey from the jump. The mental and emotional abuse she withstood from her biological father was heartbreaking. I kept thinking to myself, please cut him off! I felt like the poor girl could not catch a break! It was one heartbreak after another for Hailey. Then like a gift from God, Eric walks into her life. I was rooting for them as soon as they met. I felt like some parts of the book were very slow paced and others were too fast and glanced over. I was thankful that Hailey had such a strong friendship w Scarlett especially given everything else she had going on in her life.

It was a cute novella that has a guy who was Amazon supportive and a FMC that has been mentally abused by her father which has lead her to not want to open herself to men or potential for happiness out side of being alone. Like I said it’s cute and there is more to the guy that becomes the love interest. He is very good to her and understanding. He is there for her through some difficult times and their time together just makes your heart happy. I’m rating it lower not because it’s a bad book but because the writing didn’t flow to their completely and there are parts I feel like had a few slip ups that could have been fix in editing. Also I felt like the story needed an extra 100 pages to help things settle and things explained. But over all good little story and leaves you happy and hopeful for the couple.
