I wasn’t supposed to be in Sunset Harbor for more than a weekend. But thanks to, let’s just call it—an unforeseen act of stupidity on my part—I’m here for the whole summer. And for the first time in my life, I’m in a whole lot of trouble.
The sentence? Community service paid toward the person I accidentally wronged.
The problem? That person happens to be Dax Miller. The guy who always spent more time fighting the law than obeying it. He's also the guy I once told to have a nice life amounting to nothing.
So…it’s been fun being court-ordered to serve him now.
Except the more time I spend with Dax fighting and fixing what was broken, the more I remember that sizzling…something…that’s always been between us. Or that smile of his that can get me to do just about anything. Let me be clear, with a politician for a father, I don’t do trouble. But what happens when the temptation to embrace that inner rebel becomes too strong to resist?
And what do I do when the guy who has only dated trouble his entire life, has his sights set on me?
Cindy Steel was raised on a dairy farm in Idaho. She grew up singing Garth Brooks and Reba McEntire songs at the top of her lungs and learning to solve all of life’s problems while milking cows and driving tractors—rewriting happy endings every time. She met and married a handsome Idaho boy and is the proud mother of two wild and sweet twin boys. Which means she is also now a collector of bugs, sticks, rocks, and slobbery kisses. She loves making breakfast, baking, photography, reading a good book, and staying up way past her bedtime to craft stories that will hopefully make you smile.

Ivy (28) & Dax (28) see each other again after 10 years when she accidentally DUI’s the golf cart right through the window of his mechanic shop, breaking his beloved Lego car. The judge orders her to do 200 hours of community service to rebuild it.
If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it's parents of full blown adults thinking they can make choices for them and tell them what to do. Ivy is a very mature woman with a PHD. Yes, she accidentally got a DUI, but she still has her head on her shoulders, so I’m pretty sure she can make her own decisions. You know what happens when you try to tell your child to stay away from someone? They do the opposite, which I know from experience. His name was Alex if you’re wondering.
Overall, they were so adorable and sweet together. I loved the flashbacks to their interactions in high school to see where it all started for them. Their banter was perfect then and now. Dax was one the sweetest bad boy I've ever read. I was thrilled when Ivy finally stood up to her father.
Series notes: The timeline is the same for each book meaning the characters from other books in the series are in the background, but haven’t necessarily had their story told yet. I like this way of doing things since it doesn’t make it absolutely necessary to read them in order, but it’ll be better if you do.
I love her writing!!! The way she takes her time to build each character in the story and uses every scene with intention just does it for me. It’s brilliant. It’s adorable. It’s swoony.
The tattoo scene?😍 The boat scene?!😍 Volleyball??😍 me folded.
Tropes and Triggers: childhood friends to more, bad boy good girl, actual cinnamon roll guy though, sucky politician dad, attempted assault No language and only kissing.
I'm a simple girl, I read a Cindy Steel book, I end up giving it 5 stars.
I know that Cindy doesn't write books for just me, but somehow each book feels like she does. Rebel Summer is a book about abandoning familial expectations, standing up for yourself, and realizing that lofty goals are great...but where you are right now, might be even better.
The chemistry between Dax and Ivy is tangible. I was greedy for each line and interaction as they go from high school bio partners to being forced into a court determined agreement. Ivy is a character who is dealing with never being enough for other people (which...relatable), while Dax is someone who's finally feeling more comfortable in his own skin after years of trauma of his own.
The small town Florida island setting is perfect for summer. From boat rides on the lake, to late night flirtations in the mechanics shop, to sweet and simple moments of honest conversation. Dax and Ivy kept stepping outside of their comfort zones for each other, ultimately discovering that right person can inspire you to do the wildest of things. (within reason of course)
Cindy has created beautiful moments of tender romance full of quiet intimacy & connection...while never leaving out the humor we've come to love. Dax is the sexy, blue collar mechanic of our dreams and Ivy is the girl who finally lets her wild hair loose and takes control of her future.
I smiled, I laughed, and I was romanced. It was hot and sweet...silly yet serious. This book was a huge shot of dopamine and i'm on a high I don't intend to come down from any time soon.
The only bad thing about this book is that it is over.
Be still my heart. I found myself torn between wanting to binge-read and savour this story. The banter alone had me absolutely buzzing with excitement.
Ivy's summer takes an unexpected turn when she’s required to complete community service under the watchful eye of Dax Miller, the delectably mischievous local mechanic.
Like I said, the banter was utterly addictive! The added flashbacks from high school, the playful bartering over community service hours in present day—it had me grinning throughout. Cindy Steel has a remarkable talent for weaving in moments of witty dialogue even within the more serious moments. I simply can't get enough.
Ivy has spent her whole life being measured and controlled, always living for others—especially her politician father. I loved the slice of wild that Dax brings into her world. The safety and freedom she finds with him, the chance to make mistakes and still be loved, was beautifully portrayed. Their romance had me floating on cloud nine!
There. Are. No. Words. Well, there’s one that springs to mind…DELICIOUS!!
Y’all, this book was the perfect summer wrap up. (It makes me sad if I think about it too much, so I’m not gonna do that…)
It was flirty! It was charming! It was growth! It was healing! It was sexy! It was family! It was learning! It was…DELICIOUS!
Sucked in from PAGE ONE!! I’m a SUCKER for a good flashback scene, and each little tiny tidbit we got made me itch for the next one. Like a moth to a flame!
The character growth in this book was *chefs kiss* Both the growth that happened on page, during the course of the characters being together. AND the growth that happened off the page, but that is talked about and learned from.
I was smiling like a loon the entire time I read this book and man oh man I just love Sunset Harbor. (And Cindy Steel…lets be so for real right now)
I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, EACH OF THESE STORIES WAS SO MAGICAL! But these ladies did SUCH an amazing job making this island feel like family!
Obsessed with them all! And Rebel Summer was the perfect close to a perfect summer series!
5/5 stars
*I received this book from the author**All opinions are my own*
'Twenty minutes ago, I was leaving a ritzy ribbon-cutting ceremony. Now I was HIDING FROM A COP. Based on my current heart rate, a life of crime was not for me.'
Okay, this book is all things hilarious and swoony!!!
This has a dual timeline with flashbacks to high school for Ivy and Dax that are perfectly placed in story as things are happening in real time. I loved getting their back story through the flashbacks and seeing them interact from years before and now.
Ivy and Dax are a perfect example of opposites attract and this is a romance you do not want to miss!!!
Opposites attract, forced proximity, frenemies to more are some of the amazing tropes you'll find (and love!).
I'm so not ready for the Falling for Summer series to end, but if it does this is the perfect one to go out on!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content: Abandonment, narcissistic parent, off-page mention of a pregnancy before marriage (not the main characters), a handful of bible swears, a mention of someone not wearing a bra, mention of flipping someone off, romance-kisses only.
I wish y’all could have seen me read this book. I truly had a giddy little grin on my face the entire time (sorry to those who watched me reading at the gym). BUT IT WAS TOO GOOD NOT TO ENJOY WITH MY WHOLE HEART. Cindy Steel is one of my favorites and she delivered another swoony romance again.
There were many key moments in here that will make you squeal. I loved the immediate banter and chemistry between Dax and Ivy. They are EVERYTHING. The tension filled push and pull will bring you to your KNEES. Every single interaction felt tangible. I melted at each kissing scene and I loved how they brought out another side in each other. You can see the growth from their separation Dax and Ivy have had a for a few years and I loved the slow dismantling of their walls and seeing all the love that was between them.
This was the perfect adult summer romance book. I can’t beg y’all enough to pick it up. It is swoony and heated (kisses only!), has this perfectly tuned nostalgic quality and gosh dang DAX Y’ALL. I am not over this man. I’m just not over this book. The soft and tender moments combined with the fun and joy of falling in love squeezed my heart. A new all time favorite.
WOW! Talk about ending the Falling for summer series on an extremely HIGH note!! I really, REALLY enjoyed this indie author, kissing only summer collaboration! This final book was opposites attract, small Florida island, forced proximity perfection!!
Full of humor, heart and emotional depth. I absolutely am OBSESSED with Dax and his bad boy ways that really just masks a heart of gold. Anyone who is discounting a whole genre of romance because it doesn't have open door sex scenes are really doing themselves a disservice!
Cindy Steel is a talent like no other who can truly deliver spine-tingling swoons with her amazing kisses and tender words. I gobbled this up and especially enjoyed the audio narration by Marli Watson. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
This book made me so happy!! There's something about Cindy's writing that brings me joy. The romantic scenes had me feeling so giddy, and the banter felt genuine, adorable, and funny.
I was totally into Dax, being the bad boy. He's the good kind of trouble. The man who is tender and kind underneath his tattoos and getting in trouble with the law.
Ivy was such a relatable character, and I felt for her and all her struggles. I also enjoyed her growth and maturity in the end.
The interactions between Dax and Ivy were fabulous, and the setting was pure entertainment. I was absolutely smitten with their relationship.
THOUGHTS: This had a bit of a slower start, and I feel like it didn't sweep me away as much as Cindy's other books, but it's still super sweet and enjoyable.
OVERALL: If you've loved Cindy's writing in the past, I know you'll enjoy this one. It's impossible not to.
What a perfect frenemies to loves. They held that lovely bickery banter til the very end and I couldn't stop smiling. The romance built and I loved how they didn't just fall head over heads too fast. The duplex set up was genious (and that's all I'll say so I don't ruin it). I loved how both of their traumatic pasts made them the perfect people to help each other. So good! Such good chemistry! Love! The only reason I'd say 4.5 stars is it took a bit longer to pick up/get into than I usually prefer, but I'm so so glad I held out!
“Based on my current heart rate, a life of crime was not for me.”
The last book in the Falling for Summer series started with a literal bang. An accident crashes Ivy back into the life of her high school nemesis, bad boy Dax, and forces them to spend a lot of time together.
I couldn’t stop laughing and swooning. The volatile banter between these two is so entertaining and the way these two complement each other is fascinating. This author writes the exact formula that I love in a romcom: hilarious humor, beautiful banter, charismatic characters, and sassy swoon, but there are also some genuine and deep moments and past hurts that must be dealt with and are done in such a wonderful way. My heart was deeply touched with the healing moments and realizations that allowed for progress and development in many facets of life.
This conclusion is so satisfying and bittersweet. The books about Sunset Harbor intersect so well and can be read in any order, and after I read each one, I declare it my favorite, but this series will always remain a favorite.
Content: mild romance/kisses; very mild language

Love romcoms or just need a break from a heavy read? I highly recommend Rebel Summer! The sweetest in this book almost brought tears to my eyes! I love the bad boy trope. Finding out as the story unfolds how he got the reputation to begin with is so compelling. The chemistry is palpable between Ivy and Dax.
Things I loved - The look back in time at the beginning of each chapter! The mediocre coffee! The song! The tattoos? Um yeah!
Lots of smiles and giggles reading this dreamy romance! I have loved all Cindy Steel’s books. Check them out! Also check out the rest of the Falling for Summer series! It is so good. Sunset Harbor was a fun “get away” and I’m going to miss it!
HOW DOES SHE DO IT?! Cindy Steel hit another home run with this last installment of the Falling for Summer multi-author series. There is so much to love with this book! The humor, romance, depth, growth, and a whole lot of Cindy’s charm came together to deliver everything you want in a romcom. I loved it all!
The romantic moments were FIRE and I was obsessed with all the little gestures. The flashbacks were so stinkin cute and nostalgic and gave the story even more layers to love.
I felt like I was hanging out in the Sunset Repairs garage with Dax and Ivy, listening to 70’s music, eating chips and joking around with island friends. Her writing style sucks you in and I didn’t want to come out!
I usually prefer dual POV, but Cindy writes in a way that doesn’t leave me wishing for the male POV at all. And that says A LOT! With the flashbacks, all their discussions at the end, and a few comments from family members, I knew exactly what was going on in his head. It feels like magic that she masters the single POV so well!
In typical Cindy Steel fashion, every interaction between Dax and Ivy is sizzling with chemistry and flirty dialogue. I quickly fell in love with this incredibly endearing and dynamic pair. Dax and Ivy FOREVER!!
🔥: Kissing
🎧: I reread via audio and I LOVED the narrator. It was so fun to revisit Dax and Ivy’s swoony story and it held up as favorite!
Oh my! I came into this book with very high expectations. I’m happy to report that I was not disappointed. Cindy Steel really knows how to tell a story. You meet the characters and before you know it you’re in their heads and they are in your heart.
I loved the way the backstory was revealed with flash backs and intimate conversations. The humor was on point. The tension was electric!
You must read this story of Ivy and Dax. It is a story of trauma, boundaries, standing up for one’s self, connections and healing.
I am so sorry to see this series come to an end. I’ve been delighted to have had the chance to read them all. This is a series you do not want to miss. I’ll stop now as I don’t want to give any spoilers, but you seriously need to read this book!
I both read the book and listened to the audiobook. The narrator was amazing! I highly recommend both formats.
Just as good the second time. I loved being back on Sunset Harbor and getting a glimpse into the lives of characters from other books for the second time. Dax is great and Books is the cutest nickname ever. I'd read this whole book for one singular moment at the end and it isn't even part of the romance. I love this book.
My favorite of the series! So good. I loved the dynamics of Dax and Ivy. I loved the flashbacks and the growth of both of the characters. It had a little depth to it that I wasn't expecting and I adored it. I am sad to see the series come to an end. I loved it so much and I am so impressed by these women and their ability to weave this story together.
Rebel Summer is the final book in the multi-author Falling for Summer series. All books in the series can also be read in any order as stand alones. I have had so much fun listening to each book in this series and although I am excited to have completed the series, I’m also a bit sad to be leaving Summer Harbor. However, I do plan to return someday…
The audio book was beautifully narrated. I adored listening to this story! The narrator did a great job with the voices and I found myself completely immersed in the lives of Ivy and Dax.
The story is told from Ivy’s point of view and I absolutely loved that we experienced what she was experiencing step by step, whether it was in the fun flashbacks to high school or her current situation of serving community service hours for Dax in his mechanic shop.
The banter was strong with these two and although there was definitely an enemies to more vibe, it was clear that when Ivy needed Dax, whatever the reason, he was there for her. He also helped her to stand on her own and finally let go of the intense need to please her father.
This story had lots of fun and quirky moments, definitely some wonderfully swoony moments, and a forced proximity situation with the service hours Ivy had to complete, but it also had some deeply emotional family situations for both Dax and Ivy. I loved that they were both so supportive of each other when it really mattered. I loved this story from start to finish!
I received a complimentary copy of this audio book, however, I also purchased the ebook. All opinions are my own.
Ivy was only supposed to be in Sunset Harbor for a weekend wedding, but an unexpected mistake keeps her there all summer, paying off her debt to Dax Miller. He’s trouble incarnate, and the more time they spend together, the harder it is to remember why she needs to leave at the end of summer.
“The mediocre coffee here is spectacular.”
If that line doesn’t sell you on Dax Miller, I don’t know what will. Every time he spoke, you could hear the grin through his mischievous teasing 😏
And this is only the first exceptional microtrope…
Confession: I have been getting so annoyed lately with the ridiculous nicknames literally no one would use in real life 🙄 This book REDEEMED the nicknames microtrope for me!!! I could not get enough of Dax’s flirty sass as he unrelentingly provoked Ivy with a couple sentimental names.
This book has turned the tattoos microtrope frenzy into an official trope category. You’re going to be obsessed 🥵
Have I talked about the microtropes enough?? Sure, the mix of daddy drama and bad boy antics in forced proximity creates a nice opposites-attract HEA, but it’s Nick Miller’s—ahemmm—DAX Miller’s impish charm with nicknames and tattoos that will get under your skin in the very best ways.
Thank you to the author the the eARC 🫶🏻 and to @dreamscape_media @netgalley for the ALC 🩷 The ebook is available on Kindle Unlimited #kindleunlimited #ku

Cindy Steel 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You did it again! Perfect ending to the Falling for Summer (standalone) series. This one was so sweet, filled with swoon-worthy romance and witty banter that had me laughing and smiling throughout the book. I have loved everything I’ve read by Cindy Steel and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
Kinda cringe with the whole "bad boy" vibes, and I think the one with Phoenix/marriage of convenience was my favorite book. However, I do think that this was cute. Cute little summer romance! I feel like Dax was just annoying me the whole time...like I know that he's supposed to be teasing but it just pissed me off. His choices and actions actually impacted the fmc and he just didn't really care? I know he was supposed to be giving us butterflies but it just annoyed me. Otherwise this was fine, I thought the lego thing was cute! :)
This book left me an absolute puddle of goo on the floor. Dax and Ivy’s love is just so dang sweet! Don’t let the gorgeous cover and/or the romcom genre fool you— this book has so much depth.
Straight-arrow Ivy Brooks is back in Sunset Harbor just for the weekend. But an incident occurs that ends with her owing court-ordered service hours to none other than her old HS biology lab partner, bad boy Dax Miller.
Ivy and Dax are total opposites but they are so good for each other! Dax helps Ivy to live life on her own terms, rather than her father’s. Ivy helps Dax realize it’s okay to let people in and to care for them again.
I also need to say as a member of a Lego-obsessed family, I was so happy to see that they played a role in this book.
I loved this one so much! Paperbacks are live now and the ebook releases on 7/31!
Favorite Quotes: ⚠️ He was trouble. I just...didn't know trouble could have such gentle hands.
😏 The best thing he wore was the smirk across his face, and I would never admit that in a million years.
☕️ "There's a guy here who wants his coffee from you." "What?" "The hot mechanic guy. He wants a cup of coffee, but he says he wants it mediocre, and you're the only one who can do that." She made a face, looking slightly horrified before adding, "He told me to say that word for word."
🧬 Was I attracted to Dax Miller? Sure. What red-blooded female wouldn't be? The guy could fix anything with or without a shirt and had muscles built from physical labor. The attraction couldn't be stopped. It was science.
😉To my dismay, his door opened right away. Even the way he opened his door was smooth and casual. Smooth like the bare chest he currently wore with not a care in the world. Did I allow my gaze to trail downward? Just a little bit. On accident. The smile he gave me was almost like he'd been expecting me, which scrolled my annoyance factor up from a casual nine out of ten to a one hundred out of ten.
😂 "Why do you assume you're going to be coming to me?" He pointed to himself in mock disbelief. I motioned to where I was standing."Because you're always the one causing trouble." His easy smile brandished before me like a weapon. "I do think it's worth mentioning that, of the two of us, there's only one person court-ordered to be here this summer."
😍 "Just to be clear, this is about proving something to my dad. I'm leaving in a few weeks. And I don't like you." A low breathy chuckle escaped his lips. The unfortunate kind that had me craving a life of beaches and babies and a warm Floridian sun. "I don't like you either," he murmured, his left hand grazing my cheek to tuck a curl behind my ear.
🔥 “The kiss outside your cafe the other night was the hottest kiss I've ever had. I've been dropping tools in my garage ever since because my hands don't work right because I can't get it out of my head. I can't get you out of my head.”
❤️ Because with him, I was safe to fall. I had always been safe to fall. Safe to be less than perfect. The feeling was both addicting and liberating. There was a power in feeling safe with someone-safe to make mistakes and to be completely yourself. Safe to trust someone that much.
‼️ Part of life is knowing that there is going to be disappointment sometimes." … "But when it comes to matters of your life and your heart, it shouldn't be you that's disappointed."
*I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own. No positive review was required.
Even better on reread. Love the characters and how they fit together.
Original Review I've loved every Cindy Steel book and I'm sad this is the last. But I do love to reread, so all of them will be revisited in the future.
This story had wonderful characters with complex lives and relationships that felt realistic and not overly dramatized. I've not read any of the other books in this multi author series, but after seeing glimpses of some of the other characters in this story, I think I want to.
If you haven't read Cindy Steel yet and like romance at all, do yourself a favor and pick them up.
I thought the premise of this book sounded silly, so I didn't go into it expecting much. Shame on me for doubting Cindy Steel! . I loved this story so much. I was rooting for Ivy the whole time and cheered when she found her voice and set some much needed boundaries in her life. . The romance was nice, but it really came 2nd to how much growth Ivy experienced as a character as the book went on. . I'd recommend this to anyone. I haven't read any of the other books in the series.
1/3/26: I got this audiobook for dirt cheap, and it was excellent. Ditto what I said up there.
Superb narrator for this book! She really brought this story to life and did so great with the voices even with it just being from the FMC’s POV. A narrator can either make or break a story, and this one definitely MADE the story!!
This has got to be the BEST book of this series hands down!! Oh my goodness, I’m obsessed!! I LOVED reading about the tatted hottie of the island, Dax Miller. His humor was 100% giving me Ryan Reynolds vibes and his smokin hot looks were giving James Dean; I am so here for it ❤️🔥 The way he would constantly goad Ivy had me cackling my head off 🤣 The grandmas’ obsession with Dax was absolutely hilarious! This right here, folks, is peak Rom-Com humor and romance at its finest! What are you still doing here?! Go read it!!
Ivy grew up with a politician for a father so her every move was carefully monitored by said father lest she make a mistake which might reflect badly on his public image. Life was not what you might call pleasant. She did her best to pull good grades and do whatever would please her father, but then Dax Miller became her assigned biology partner. Dax was a perpetual bad boy and he carried that label with pride. Things just always seemed to go wrong when Dax was is in the picture so when one fateful night led to Ivy accidentally getting involved in a crime with said bad boy, her politician father was less than pleased.
Fast forward a few years and Ivy has moved off the island and away from her tyrannical father. When a wedding brings her back to the island, things quickly begin to go back downhill. Ivy may or may not have accidentally taken Ambien, hopped into a golf cart to go home, fallen asleep behind the wheel, and then smashed into the front of Dax Miller’s repair shop. So yeah, definitely not great. Even though it was an accident, Ivy was given a DUI and told she owed Dax 200 work hours to help repair the giant Lego car she demolished in the wreck. Life was not looking to be in Ivy’s favor at all. Now stuck on the island, Ivy has to settle with living under her father’s tyranny once again (he wasn’t at all impressed that she got a DUI plus had to spend so much time with Mr. Bad Influence himself) unless she can find another house to live in for the duration of her stay. That’s where Dax came into play 😏 Dax had a duplex. Half of said duplex was empty. Ivy connived Dax to let her live in the empty half. And they lived happily ever after!
Okay, I lied. They absolutely did NOT live happily ever after. Things were good for a few days but then, as was to be expected, they started to annoy each other. A truce was made so that they could attempt to live in perfect peace and harmony. Many swoony moments commenced as Ivy and Dax were forced to spend much time in each other’s company at work and at home. Ivy constantly tried to deny what her heart was feeling, but you can only deny a heart for so long. I absolutely died over THE KISS 🫠 Absolute perfection right there! I adored the fact that they made each other better people ♥️
Best Moments: 🚗 Accidental accomplice to a crime 🚗 Dax calling Ivy “Books” 🚗 Biology class — namely the dissections 🐸🐷 🚗 Accidental DUI 🚗 Mediocre coffee 🚗 Rebuilding a giant Lego car 🚗 Sharing a duplex 🚗 Nightly knocking 🚗 Ferry sunset photo shoot 🚗 Dax coming to Ivy’s rescue 🚗 The tattoo 🤭 🚗 Her song ♥️ 🚗 Goading Ivy into THE KISS 🚗 Joy ride at 2 a.m. 🚗 Jail time 🚗 DNA jokes 🧬 🚗 Day 420 🚗 “I love Books.”
