All Ellie Merkowitz has ever known is living a sheltered upbringing. But that’s her normal life as a subservient, Orthodox Jewish woman. Her future is already laid out. Ellie will marry, have many children, and be giving to her husband and family. That is, until everything changes with one dream, and an unexpected trip in the middle of the night to meet the boy next door.

Now, Ellie wants more out of her life. But as a recent high school graduate, she must first escape her narcissistic father. And more than anything, she needs answers about her troubled past and the dreams that have been haunting her for years.

Falling in love with his neighbor was never the plan for David Cohen—neither was helping her escape the night terrors that haunt her dreams. But he had no choice. After all, the girl in the red wig was never supposed to keep showing up in the middle of the night. But Ellie’s dreams had other intentions. And she kept finding David.

ARC review:
I enjoyed the book from the start.
Originally I had no idea what the story is about and was a bit shocked that it was religion based as well, but it is well written and captivating. I love how David takes care of Ellie and how their relationship grows.

Ellie is very sheltered by her abusive dad. David is the one that is there for Ellie when she needs him. So when Ellie jumps in David’s car when he is about to go on a trip, he doesn’t say no. She has some things to figure out and he is going to help her. It can’t be that hard, right?

This was an entertaining read with a little spice. Usually books with religious themes are not for me, but this one kept me interested through it all.
As someone mentioned before, there was a lot things that could have been showed rather than said straight but it wasn’t a huge problem here.
A lot of heavy themes including suicidal thoughts so if you are easily triggered I recommend checking trigger warnings on the last page before reading.
Overall I don’t regret reading this at all and will recommend this to a friend!

It is something so freeing about the book. Both are messes with anxiety, depression and ptsd which I can 1000% relate to because I suffer from all three and not only seeing their love blossom but they can get through anything is truly poetic and amazing to see unfold. It is the perfect blend of a love story, smut (didn’t expect so much of it) and thriller!!!

The Girl In The Red Wig was a captivating story featuring Ellie Merkowitz and David Cohen. The two are next door neighbours whose meeting is quire auspicious for both. David, unable to ensure the pain following the tragic loss of his mother, is minutes away from ending is all. It is at that moment that he catches sight of Ellie in his backyard. Her presence gives him pause. The need to see if she's okay pulls him away from his current intention, and saves his life.

Ellie suffers from night terrors. That is what brought her to David's backyard.

I never knew what a night terror was until I met my next-door neighbor, Ellie Merkowitz. Initially, I thought it was just a horrific nightmare. But it's much worse than that. It's when a person wakes up in the most heightened state of panic. They're inconsolable for a short time and either screaming or talking in ways that make no sense. People who have them will typically sleepwalk and can even become violent towards themselves and others. However, the most unique aspect of night terrors is the amnesia that follows. Ellie never remembers anything about what happened or why she says the things she does in this panicked state of mind.

David seeks to comfort and calm her without touching her as she is a devout Orthodox Jew and her faith is very important to her.

Ellie's faith has led to a very sheltered life however in befriending David, she learns a lot about the world outside her community. David spends hours upon hours with her, tending to her every time she has a night terror and finds herself in his backyard. He tried to help her decifer her ramblings, but more than that he just wants her to know that she's not alone.

These two beautiful and damaged souls are drawn to each other, and while a relationship would be forbidden, their friendship is miraculous and serendipitous. They help one another move past their pain and suffering, and heal their spirits.

I wanted to read this book because it is rare that I come across advance reader opportunities for books with Jewish characters. Religion can be a very divisive topic, and while there is extremism in all religions, Judaism has taken center stage lately. I thought the author did a pretty good job of trying to explain some aspects of the religion without portraying it as "the big bad", so thank you for that.

I was hooked on the storyline from the first chapter, and desperately hoped for peace for both characters. The author took me, and his characters, on quite the journey. I would never have anticipated all the twists and turns. It was a moving and memorable piece of writing.

I would highly encourage readers to pick this one up, but please check out the trigger warnings as there are quite a few.

The Girl in the Red Wig
By Timothy Kyle

4.5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Content Warnings: Religious Extremism, child neglect, verbal abuse/racial slurs, violence, depression/mental illness, mention of suicide

Tropes: Forbidden romance, found family, first love, slow burn, emotional rollercoaster

I am not one to read any sort of books containing aspects of religion, but I’m glad I gave this author a chance. It wasn’t an in your face type of book, more so one that pulled on your heart strings.

David and Ellie are neighbors growing up. David claims to be Jewish while Ellie is an Orthodox Jew. Ellie grew up in a very strict household with a father who is extremely controlling in her life.

One fateful night brings these two characters together as children and an innocent connection forms immediately. As years go by, they rely on one another to learn about each other’s lifestyles. Ellie is always curious about life outside her religion and how others live. She wishes to be free to explore without fear/punishment. David, always the protector, still struggles with grief and loss but tries to always be positive for Ellie and his family.

Before David takes off on an adventure, an unfortunate event happens with Ellie and David now has a choice to make; take Ellie away from her upbringing or risk leaving her behind in a potential dangerous situation.

This book put me through so many emotions which I’m still processing. My heart broke for both characters. David had such a heavy burden on his shoulders while Ellie just wanted freedom to explore life.

There were a few twists and turns at the end along with new found family, graphic violence, illegal activity and forbidden romance. It’s a quick read which I really enjoyed. I will say, I wish there was a further epilogue at the end which talked about Ellie’s life with religion. The plot kind of drifted away a bit from that aspect in the end and didn’t close the loop on what she felt religion wise and I wish we had that closure.

If you are sensitive to this lifestyle/religious upbringing, please take caution reading it.

This was a 3.5 read for me. I absolutely loved the writing. It was so descriptive and painted such a vivid picture. I felt like I was immersed in the story with the beautiful imagery. There were moments when the descriptions gave me chills. This author is incredible talented.

(Potential Spoilers ahead, but not really I don’t think)

Ellie was by far my favorite character. The way her story progressed kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t put the book down because I wanted to know everything about her and what happened to her mom. As the story unfolded, seeing the ways in which Ellie developed made my heart happy. I am a Christian woman so it’s sad knowing that the type of abusive religious extremism that Ellie was subjected to actually happens. That realism added so much depth to her character and her story. Again, beautifully written.
Ellie and Sasha were adorable and I loved that they found each other.

- Now… the negatives. I couldn’t have cared about David less. Anytime it was his POV, it made me want to rip my hair out. I just felt like I was getting hit on the head with his hate for Judaism, his hormones, and his erections. At the beginning, it felt like every page mentioned his erections. Overall as a character, I didn’t like him. I thought the romance was cute, but he irritated me to no end. His character is the big hit to my rating.

Overall, this was a really well written book. I had never read a romance written by a man before, so it was a new experience for me. There were moments where I was like “yup… a man wrote this” but those moments were few and far between. I truly believed the author knocked this one out of the park with exceeding my expectations for a male romance author. Again, OBSESSED with his writing style. I would recommend this book.

### Book Review: Ellie's Journey of Self-Discovery 🌙❤️

This book description presents a captivating and emotional journey of Ellie Merkowitz, a young Orthodox Jewish woman navigating the complexities of her life and dreams. Ellie’s story is one of courage and self-discovery, making it a compelling read for anyone who enjoys tales of personal growth and breaking free from societal constraints.

Ellie has grown up in a sheltered environment, with her future meticulously planned out for her: marriage, children, and a life dedicated to her husband and family. This is a common expectation in her Orthodox Jewish community. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when she experiences a vivid dream and decides to meet the boy next door in the middle of the night. This pivotal moment sparks a desire for something more in Ellie, a yearning to break free from her predetermined path and explore her own identity.

Ellie is portrayed as a deeply relatable character. Her struggle against a narcissistic father 👨‍👧 and her quest for answers about her past 🕵️‍♀️ add layers of complexity to her character. Readers will likely root for Ellie as she bravely confronts her fears 😱 and challenges societal expectations 💪. David Cohen, the boy next door 🏡, is an intriguing counterpart to Ellie. His unexpected involvement in Ellie’s life, particularly in helping her deal with her night terrors 🌙, adds a romantic 💑 and supportive element to the story.

The book touches on several profound themes, such as self-discovery 🌟, breaking free from restrictive norms 🕊️, and the power of dreams 🌙. It also delves into the emotional impact of family dynamics 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 and the struggle for independence 💪. These themes are woven into Ellie’s journey, making the narrative both thought-provoking 🤔 and inspiring 🌈.

Ellie lives a sheltered life. As a young woman in the Orthodox Jewish community, there are many rules and standards she must adhere to. Add to that an abusive father and the trauma that came from her mother leaving them and its a recipe for her eventual night terrors. Night terrors which lead her to David, the boy next door who becomes her escape.

David loves the girl next door but he can never have her because of her faith. Her night terrors lead her to his backyard most nights and he helps her through every single one, writing down the ramblings that stream from her mouth and trying to make sense of them. When one terror leads to a completely different type of fear, things change for both David and Ellie in an unimaginable way.

ARC REVIEW

First things first. This book literally kept me hooked and I couldn't put it down even when I thought its getting was way too dark. There are certain TWs you have to keep in mind before starting this book. Despite all the TWs I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.

Although the plot of the book is based on the orthodox nature of a certain religion which I don't know much about so I cannot specifically comment on that but again it was interesting to read how an unjustified part of a religion can keep you tied down and deep down how much you struggle between the right and the wrong before wanting to break out of it.

This is a story about two preteens, neighbours, who weren't supposed to know each other let alone fall in love. This story is about suffering and pain Ellie and David endured while heading on their journey towards discovering the truth. This is about them falling in love and choosing each other as their anchor, no matter what happens in life.

This is a story about how you circumnavigate yourself around the trauma and experiences life throws at you. This is a story about loss and destruction but also about hope, love and a better tomorrow. This is also about found family, friendships and second chances in life.

This book touches almost all the dark themes one could think of and they are also nicely dealt with. Besides there aren't any loose ends, the author has done tremendous work by tying up all the loose ends at the end.

PS; If you love reading books with dark, twisted and TWs theme then this is the book for you. I recommend it.
Thank you Timothy Kyle and Nicole Kincaid PA for providing me with the eARC.

This was more than a 5 star read for me, it's now in my top 3 favorite books of all time!!

The amount of times my eyes betrayed me by skipping ahead on the page accidently to see what happens next, I had to hold my hand over the page to read one line at a time :D

These are the tropes:
Forbidden lovers, Friends to lovers, Childhood Friends to Lovers, First Loves, Romantic , Suspense, Found Family, Forced Proximity, Slow burn, Dream exploration, Dual POV, contemporary romance

I really enjoyed the Dual POV of David and Ellie. It was cool to hear both their thoughts and how they aligned.

Timothy (the author) did a fantastic job leaving almost every chapter ending on a serious cliffhanger. I could not put it down! I'm a slow reader to be honest but I read this book in about 3 days which is extremely fast for me!

The angst, the trauma, the drama and all the answers and resolve you get in the ending are everything I could ask for in a book.

Also, I'll be honest I knew very little about Judaism going into this book and I loved learning about Judaism and Orthodox Judaism. I love learning about other cultures and religions.

This was such a well written love story with the literal emotional roller coaster, I wish I could read it again for the first time. I will be re-reading this book! Also, the chapter before the epilogue made me cry legit happy tears. This is the first book I've that made me cry.

I wish I could talk about the spice part but if I do I'd give things away. I forgot there was going to be apicevin this book because the build up of their relation is just so cute and emotional and all I wanted for them both was to be happy and together in the end.

You need to add this one to your TBR stat!!

This book is an emotional story that pulls you in from the very first pages. At its heart, it’s about Ellie Merkowitz, a young woman raised in a strict Orthodox Jewish community. Her journey is raw, unsettling at times, and deeply moving as she struggles to break free from her father’s control and search for her own identity.

The author captures the tension between faith, family expectations, and personal freedom. The writing is unflinchingly honest, and the darker themes—trauma, abuse, and loss—are handled with sensitivity while still packing an emotional punch. Ellie unexpected bond with David Cohen was tender and full of tenderness. He tried to protect her, he cared about her and spent hours with her, every time she had a nightmare. She learned about the world outside her religious community and questioned many things about her own life. The relationship between them grows deeper. It doesn’t feel like a simple romance, it’s about healing, trust, and finding hope in the midst of pain.

Timothy Kyle had crafted a story to make us think, feel and questioning. Meeting his characters through their vulnerabilities and their quest to find themselves, makes this story stand in contemporaneous romance. In a world that spin so fast and plenty of superficial information, this book invites us to slow down and reflect. This is the kind of book that moves our minds and touches our hearts.

I highly recommend this book to all readers who love emotional stories, that combines love, survival, and the courage to defy expectations. It lingers with you long after the last page.

This book is exceptionally written for the damaged souls who are also hopeless romantics.

The Girl in The Red Wig introduces Ellie, the main character of this story, who has her life planned out for her. Everything from high school to marriage is all set. However, things take a turn one night when she meets the boy next door, David, through a dream. Her brain chemistry changes making her want more, crave more.

This book is so emotional and powerful for people like me. I heavily related to the content displayed here because it’s so melancholic yet beautiful. The writing is engaging and descriptive which I like. David and Ellie are amazing characters and the plot is good however I did find some plot holes.

That being said, Timothy Kyle did an amazing job writing this book. It’s really a beautiful piece of art & I cannot wait for it to be out in the world.

"The Girl in the Red Wig" by Timothy Kyle is an enthralling journey into the lives of Ellie and David that captivates from the very first page. From the dedication at the beginning, which evoked tears and hinted at the emotional depth to come, I knew I was in for something special.

The story of Ellie and David unfolds with a perfect balance of excitement and suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats throughout. Kyle's masterful storytelling had me hooked from the start, unable to put the book down until I reached the very end.

What sets "The Girl in the Red Wig" apart is its ability to seamlessly weave together romance and suspense, creating a narrative that is as heart-pounding as it is heartwarming. There were moments where the intensity was so palpable that catching my breath became a challenge, yet I couldn't tear my eyes away from the page.

Overall, "The Girl in the Red Wig" is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a captivating story that keeps them guessing until the very end. Timothy Kyle has crafted a truly unforgettable tale that will stay with readers long after they've turned the final page.

This book is a coming of age romance but not of the average variety. It’s an adventure of minority populations that have to overcome the expectations set by their religion and what society considers normal. This book is anything but normal in that it had representation of religious restrictions, medical hair loss, mental delays, and so much more. This book takes you on a cross country road trip across the US and takes a almost thrilling turn when secrets of the past come to light and what these two love birds thought were true is shattered into a million pieces. You will laugh, cry and be angry with and for the characters, and serves as a great reminder that sometimes life can be challenging but with love loyalty and a bit of faith you can overcome anything. Overall spice level is about 2 stars, and very much represents the inexperience of the couple involved so if you where coming for the spice it’s not for you. If you’re wanting a thought provoking insider look at some very tough situations this book is definitely for you.

“The Girl in the Red Wig” by Timothy Kyle is an absolute masterpiece that left me breathless. From the very first page, I was drawn into the vivid world Kyle creates, and I couldn’t put the book down until I reached the final sentence. The protagonist’s journey is raw, emotional, and deeply moving, with every chapter offering new layers of complexity and growth.

The writing is exquisite—poetic yet accessible—and the themes of identity, loss, and resilience are explored with such care and depth that I found myself completely immersed. Kyle has an incredible talent for crafting characters that feel real and relatable, making it impossible not to root for them at every turn.

This is the kind of book that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best novels I’ve read this year. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a beautifully written, emotionally resonant story. A must-read!

This book was great. some of it was a little hard to read, but overall, it was really good. It is a story about David and Ellie, who are neighbors who become best friends one night when David is mere seconds away from ending his life. It was the same night that Ellie showed up in his backyard with problems of her own. The story follows them through the years until they become seniors in high school and upon graduation David and a friend decide to go on a road trip to New York because David is in the running to receive a scholarship. At the last minute though Ellie who has been not only sheltered but verbally and mentally abused by her father, takes off and goes with David on this road trip that ends up changing both of their lives. This book is heartfelt and emotional. It deals with some heavy issues, so be sure to check your triggers warnings. I personally am glad I read it, and I will definitely recommend it to others.

The Girl in the Red Wig is about Ellie, an Orthodox Jewish young lady raised by her abusive father and sheltered from much of the world. When she meets David, it all turns upside down. David and Ellie fall for each other in waves and teach each other the importance of friendship, true acceptance, and self exploration. And when Ellie runs away on a road trip with David, she has to face her identity, her religious beliefs, love, new experiences, and so much more she never expected.

What a book. Genuinely didn’t know what to expect from the blurb, figured it would be a sweet young adult romance with the heavy topics of Ellie’s faith and her abuse. But this turned and thickened in so many ways over the course of the novel!! So many unexpected additions to the characters and story with an added twist of danger towards the end, all glued together with the unwavering love and acceptance David and Ellie shower each other with. A beautiful story.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster that completely captivated me. Ellie’s journey of self-discovery, breaking free from the only life she’s ever known, was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Her struggles felt so real—every moment of doubt, fear, and longing for something more pulled at my heart. The way her past unraveled, piece by piece, kept me glued to the pages, and I felt every ounce of her desperation to find the truth.

David’s role in Ellie’s story added so much depth, not just as a love interest, but as someone who truly saw her when no one else did. Their connection was both tender and intense, making each of their encounters feel charged with emotion. This book isn’t just about love—it’s about courage, breaking cycles, and daring to chase a different future. It left me breathless, and I know this story will stay with me for a long time.

☆Ellie and David♡
The Girl in the Red Wig is an emotional story with a beautiful lining. Ellie has a very traumatic life. She's an orthodox Jew and has an abusive father. Ellie unfortunately also suffers from nightmare terrors. One night, it brings her to her neighbor David. Little does Ellie know, but David has always loved her but can't be with her due to her religion.
I completely loved every aspect of this story. It's mysterious, emotional, full of suspense, and a crazy plot. I thought David was amazing, and I love how protective he became of her. Timothy did an amazing job delivering this story! 🙌🖤

The story definitely didn’t go where I thought it would when I started with The Girl in the Red Wig. Although this is a step up from most indie works I’ve read recently, I will say it does suffer heavily from tell not show. Wish there had been a touch more research done on a few things, but as long as you check the trigger warnings (if you’re inclined), you shouldn’t be offended. Religion is involved (Orthodox Judaism), but it kinda falls by the wayside early on thematically.

Overall, if you’re looking for an indie author to support, this is a good choice.

We all need a David in our lives someone who loves you unconditionally and is there for you no matter what.

A story of a forbidden friendship and love. A girl with her whole life planned out for her and the boy next door who would do anything to save her.

A beautiful written story with a some spice in a coming of age romance but it’s not your regular old coming of age story… with twist, turns, and dark moment’s. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. You will, feel anger, happiness, sad, hopeful. A journey of many roads trauma, death, love, sex, a family reunited

If you want to read a book that will have you crying , all in your feelings , very little spice , with family secrets coming from every direction, then this book is for you. The FMC has a lot of family drama as well as physical and verbal abuse happening to her, and it feels great to see her progress in the book. The MMC has some family baggage as well, but he is the hero in this book. This book flows very well, and the speed at which everything happened was perfect. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great book that will have you in your feelings.

This book was quite the ride. It had a lot of twists that I wasn’t expecting. At the heart of it all is a love story of two young people, David and Ellie, both suffering losses and bound by a chance encounter on one of the worst nights of David’s life. While the characters are definitely young, there is some spice, but overall it is a tale that has 2 characters meeting their soulmates at a young age and that meeting literally changing their lives. What was even nicer is we get completion for all of the characters through the epilogue.

In this story, you will witness the unbreakable bond between Ellie & David, despite their unique circumstances.

Seeing Ellie break free from all she’s ever known to find herself was incredibly inspiring and I love how supportive and protective David was towards Ellie the whole way through.

In the progression of the story, unforeseen drama unfolds and the suspense picks up… I found myself turning pages far past my bedtime. Well done, Tim! 👏👏👏 I am eagerly looking forward to future works from this author!

First of all..this book had me crying one minute..then the biggest smile the next! We all need a David in our lives! The way he makes Ellie feel beautiful about herself despite how she was treated by her father..my heart fell instantly for him! How respectful he is as she navigates her way through her way to live with her religion and just life in general! This was filled with twists and turns! I definitely didn't see a few things coming when I was reading! I really enjoyed this book!
