There is no joy in an illusion, whether it concerns the fire of animosity or love’s deep devotion; it is the ardent truth that endows happiness.

Brother Dearest is a chaste novella of approximately 40,000 words and was written for CoWriMo, raising money to fight COVID-19. This work of fiction is created entirely from the author’s imagination. At no point in this body of work has Artificial Intelligence (AI) been employed to write it.
Elin Eriksen is a Norwegian author of Austenesque dramas, a proud mother of four children, a grandmother to a beautiful girl and happily married to her own Mr Darcy.

This is a truly unique P&P story. It alerts time lines, roles and more.
While Lizzy Bennet is in London running an errand for her uncle; as she had been helping her relatives after Mrs. Gardiner delivered her fourth child, she makes a detour to a park where she meets Georgiana Darcy. Lizzy also slips into a pile of horse droppings and Georgiana takes her to Darcy house to clean her up. Enter a disdainful, sarcastic, borderline cruel Darcy. Lizzy is humiliated and returns to Gracechurch street. But Georgiana perseveres and soon she and Lizzy are friends. When Darcy turns up in Meryton he of course doesn't recognize Lizzy. So things go much like Canon except NO Wickham. You see Wickham is the curate at Kympton (What WHat WHAT!!) When Lizzy goes to Hunsford Darcy makes her an offer - to be his sister's second companion. Lizzy declines as she isn't looking for work and by accepting she would be lowering not only her chances at marriage but also her sisters. Darcy unleashes a vile spew disdaining her, her parents, her sisters and pretty much anyone who isn't a Darcy - what a tool He leaves, there is no letter. Jane and Bingley marry, Lizzy goes away with the Gardiners and ends up at Pemberley where only Georgiana is in residence. Georgiana, Mrs. Younge and Rev Wickham (dun, dun, dun)
Lizzy and the Gardiners are presided upon to stay at Pemberley and then Lizzy alone for Georgiana. The Bingley arrive we learn the true evil of Wickham and Younge. Lizzy and Darcy have a spat, the Bingleys and Lizzy leave and Georgiana disappears. Darcy blames Lizzy there is a carriage chase to the border. And a bunch more action before we end up at HEA.
What if Lizzy and Darcy met earlier, but Georgiana and Elizabeth made friends first? Brother Dearest had a startling meet cute for Lizzy and Darcy and the sparks really flew from there.
Brother Dearest begins with Elizabeth staying in London helping her aunt during the birth of her fourth child. During a little break wandering in Hyde Park, she encounters Georgiana Darcy when an embarrassing and painful incident occurs. Unfortunately, Georgiana's dour companion, Mrs. Younge gives Georgie's brother the wrong impression about Elizabeth's misfortune in the park and he sets her bristles up. Darcy comes to her neighborhood with a friend and makes it even worse.
And, he just keeps digging the hole deeper. Meanwhile, Elizabeth can't seem to get away from him and ends up in his company when Georgiana lands in a terrible situation and needs Darcy and Lizzy to work together if all hope isn't lost. Is it enough to help them see past the rough encounters of the past?
Brother Dearest was a mixture of fun and frisk with new possibilities for a variation on the original and new and fun ways for the main pair to battle their way to love. I was all for this and loved seeing the new bits and this more fiery reluctant couple plus a refreshing take on Wickham's situation and how Ramsgate took place. However, I felt like the dazzling beginning led into a passive summary bits of 'here's the Meryton Assembly, and here we have Jane sick at Netherfield and then the Netherfield Ball, if you look over here we have Hunsford... and then I was so glad to be back to that exciting variation portion that was vastly more engaging.
Don't think I didn't enjoy it, but rather that I enjoyed the original variation bits much more- and that ending. Superb to see the fireworks and unexpectedness that really made Brother Dearest shine brightest. Well done romance of antagonistic opposites.
Lovely read. I always appreciate this author's take on pride and prejudice variations. Both Darcy and Georgiana are fortunate Elizabeth came into their lives.
Elizabeth's meeting Darcy is through his sister, who goes to Elizabeth's aid in Hyde Park where E. has slipped on manure and needs to clean both her shoes and her dress hem and so takes E. to her own nearby home.
Throughout this story Darcy keeps in mind what is expected of him in choosing a bride while Elizabeth is not at all afraid to let him know what she thinks of his behavior and words towards her.
Later in the story after Elizabeth and Georgiana have kept in touch and become friends, Elizabeth turns down an offer to become a second companion to Georgiana. Elizabeth does end up staying at Pemberley where she and the Gardiners have visited. Jane and Bingley (now married) are expected to arrive for a stay. Ironically, in this story not only is Mrs. Younge companion to Georgiana but we find Wickham as Vicar at Kympton!
Later in the story there is a chase to Gretna Green to add to the action. Plus, Georgiana makes a decision which is not at all in line with what her brother expects.
We also have Elizabeth looking at her father's role with some enlightenment.
I found the ending rather abrupt but did enjoy this story overall.
Entertaining! The beginning was unexpected with short summaries of the expected events, before the story began to diverge and developed into a more involved storyline with more depth. Very interesting variation once it got going. Enjoy!
Fun variation with enjoyable banter between Darcy and Elizabeth
This is a well-written humorous variation with delightful exchanges, albeit contentious banter between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. It is not until the end that an understanding between them is reached; while the road to their realizations is long and winding.
In this story, Elizabeth befriends Georgiana Darcy first. From the very beginning, Mr. Darcy insults and offends Elizabeth with his arrogant, brusque, high-handed, and inhospitable manner. There is the insult at Meryton Assembly as in Canon, as well as the revelations about Jane Bennet and Charles Bingley in Kent. It is made clear that Elizabeth despises Mr. Darcy, and seemingly so, vice versa. Yet, somewhere along the way, they discover that they are no better apart than together; that life has more meaning and excitement when they are in each other’s presence even when furious with each other.
It’s wonderful how the author, who never disappoints after having read many of her other P&P variations, does not delve into repeating scenes and facts already well-known from Canon. Instead, this novel is presented in a fast-paced way without wasting pages on what is already known. Rather, focus is put on characterization, especially highlighting qualities that make Darcy and Elizabeth fall for each other despite starting as adversaries/enemies/opponents.
Georgiana Darcy is given much personality here rather than just Mr. Darcy’s sister, who always gets relegated in the background. Many of the villains hardly make an appearance, and are merely mentioned.
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a Pride and Prejudice variation. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a chaste novella and was written for CoWriMo, raising money to fight COVID-19. This is enemies-to-lovers, where Darcy and Elizabeth meeting prior to canon, Elizabeth and Georgiana are friends, and altered events at Ramsgate.
There is no joy in an illusion, whether it concerns the fire of animosity or love’s deep devotion; it is the ardent truth that endows happiness. It is the summer of 1811, and Elizabeth is in town to aid Mrs Gardiner through her confinement when an embarrassing mishap introduces her to Miss Darcy and her officious brother. Mr Darcy deems his sister at the most trying age after the vicar of Kympton, Mr Wickham, had to save her from making a grave mistake in Ramsgate. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.
Darcy and Elizabeth's sharp tongues made this a five-star read. Other things also occurred, such as Georgiana's questionable inner circle and brief canon moments that Eriksen made into her own.
However, all of these things took a backseat to Darcy and Elizabeth's no-holds-barred insults, accusations, cold-hard truths, prejudices, and arrogance, all of which I found to be highly entertaining 🤭
What worked for me was the fact that:
1) I believe canon Darcy could have been that insulting (I liked this version of him) 2) The biting dialogue between D&E wasn't overshadowed by misunderstandings or obnoxious 'other' characters. 3) They both gave as good as they got.
And behind all of that came a happily ever after. I only wish that the book had been longer.
Ms. Eriksen has once again provided her readers with an entrancing P&P variation. Our dear couple's personalities remain as in canon, but circumstances are tweaked to create a totally satisfying story. A special delight is Georgiana's prominence, along with an alternative explanation for Ramsgate, and a Wickham who actually has been given the living per the senior Darcy's desires. Darcy is, as usual, slow to realize that what he has been raised to expect in a wife will not suit him, while Elizabeth is perhaps even more vitriolic but admirably more perceptive than usual. The tale veers off in unexpected but logical directions, ending in the much-desired HEA.
Loved reading this variation- Georgianna was a main character. The Bennett sisters and mother were more talked about and a few lines. Darcy was always near with Georgianna. This story did not drag on with needless drama and repetition of emotions, thoughts, and same mistakes. It had some modern views, but I found it Worth the reading. This is a story for all ages to read. I recommend this low traumatic and not too many villains written in the variation.
Nobody was In character. Elizabeth wasn't clever and Darcy was an ass. The conversations would have never happened in Regency England and Elizabeth could have never even admitted to knowing about mistresses and still been considered a proper young lady. Didn't see any redeamable traits in Darcy and have no idea why Elizabeth or anyone would be fall in love with him.
Brother Dearest was fun to read. Darcy’s haughty behavior is exactly what we’ve come to expect. I like the fact that Lizzie takes him to task instead of allowing it to pass and be demure or answering politely. Great read that moves quickly keeping the reader engaged.
I always enjoy Elgin’s stories. Loved the twist on the Wickham saga. I did enjoy the short nature of the story- alluding to, but no detail in many of the cannon events (Netherfield stay). Were this a full novel, many of these events could have been quite humorous given the initial meeting of E&D.
Darcy just loved the taste of those Hessians, didn't he? He sure tasted them often enough.
I found that I liked this a lot more than I expected. And I already knew I would enjoy it. I love the interactions and the almost irreverent way they managed their world. And seeing Wickham not be a known villain from the get go? Wonderful! Well worth the fun read!
Aptly put. This variation takes the reader on a whirlwind ride where Elizabeth goes from friends to Georgiana and enemy of her brother, to the happy bride of the brother and still friends with Georgiana.
The animosity between Darcy and Elizabeth throughout much of the book is wonderfully written, real on her side and feigned on his. Quite cute!
This is a flash though P& P with splashes of changes in the story. The way Darcy is written however, I cannot see how Elizabeth falls for him in the end after all that he says and does in his version. I cannot like Darcy much here, which is sad. Elizabeth however is more outspoken and interesting than the usual which is a bit refreshing.
Darcy was particularly obnoxious and obtuse - why Elizabeth went from distaste to love is beyond explanation. The writing was also disappointing, relying on a flat recitation of events for much of the story. I've read most of this authors work, so I know she's more talented than this book shows.
Of course this rates high. Elin Eriksen always writes an entertaining well edited variation. Enjoy Elizabeth's wit and humor and Darcy's wish to stay high and think he knows all the right answers. Here even Georgian tries to stick to her guns, morals and beliefs. Nice version with the normal, though hidden villians.
A new take on several characters: Georgianna, Wickham, Mrs Younge, and others. Georgianna’ marriage was a surprise as was Wickham actually holding the Kympton living. I also enjoyed the author’s notes where she explains the inspiration for this story.
Great story! I loved the cheeky Elizabeth. The story though necessarily follow the sequence of the original at many places , was interestingly different in others. Darcy was grumpier and Elizabeth cheekier and their conversations funny and entertaining.
This story needs a lot of editing, in my opinion. The writing was clunky and didn't flow well a lot of the time. There were paragraphs that were super long, canon plot points that were glossed over with exposition, and many loose threads.
I didn't even like the romance. It was neither sweet nor passionate. Lizzy disliked Mr. Darcy for most of the book, and how they finally came together was a letdown for me.
The author gets points for a unique take on the Ramsgate situation, but that's about it. This is mediocre fanfiction and not worth paying for.
An unexpected beginning and a surprising journey in this delightful variation inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by the talented Elin Eriksen. I enjoyed it very much.
