Beyond the Ice #3

Ice Cold Rival

Rate this book
One night, one chance, one hundred percent a lie…

Reece
Hookups are my jam, but I’ve never had a girl shuddering with one breath then running away the next. And I can’t stop thinking about her. Probably for the best I’m trading in party games for extra practices. I can lead us back to the Frozen Four, but I need a sign of my dedication to persuade Coach. All I have to do is convince the one who got away to fake a relationship with me—and remember my oldest rule: only one night.

Kenzie
Nerd. Prude. Boring. Not anymore. After my ex proves hockey players really will stick their…uh, sticks…in anything, I swear off his type forever. But I don’t last a single night before hooking up with his rival. Turns out I’m bad at fun, though with my ex being thrust upon me at every opportunity, I’m willing to try—and fail. Until Reece offers me a choice: fall back into my boring, safe life or play along with him. The answer seems simple, but I’m worried playing will never be enough.

Ice Cold Rival is the third book in the Beyond the Ice series of interconnected standalones featuring the hockey players of Teagan University—a fake dating, reformed playboy, one night stand, rival's ex, college hockey romance with plenty of heat.

I got to read an ARC for Ice Cold Rival and loved it! Reece and Kensie were such a sweet pair and their almost one night stand turned into fake dating, into friends with bennies, and then true love!

Reece is the guy you turn to for a good time, but he wants to prove that he is more than just the party guy. He's sweet and fun and proves that he is a hardworking! And thats exactly how he wins Kensie's heart, by being himself and showing her that not everyone is like her ex.

Kensie is the new tranfer into the Chi Omega Sorority house and it's not been a fun time. She's targeted by the Mean Girls of the sorority and found out her ex cheated on her multiple times. She finds a friend in Reece and together they form a companionship that leads to love.

Nikki's characters are always so fun to read and I love the appearances from the other characters that pop in! I even love the unexpected "Voren" thrown in!

I was so excited to receive this book as an ARC reader. I've always loved Nikki Hall's books, her Wild Card series was the start of my sports romance obsession. Each book just gets better and better. Just when I thought she couldn't write a better man than Gavin, she writes Reece Turner. You get a small glimpse into this play boy from the first two books of the Beyond the Ice series just enough to have your interest peaked but Ice Cold Rival gives you a whole different version of him that will have you swooning and wishing he would help you check off things on your "to do" list.

You have two very well throughout main characters who are battling similar life struggles and are willing to help each other in whatever way they can. What started out as a fake relations (enter one of my favorite tropes), turns to friends, into lovers that will have each others backs no matter what.

Between the funny banter, spice hitting just right and finding their own voice moments you have a perfect blend for a sports romance novel. Not to mention the return of the duck roommates (Henry and Sunny) and a surprise visit from my favorite Wild Cat alum, Eva!

This is Book 3 of the Beyond The Ice Series!

I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC 🥰

Ice Cold Rival by Nikki Hall is an electric college hockey romance that delivers fake dating, revenge, and an undeniable enemies-to-lovers spark in one addictive package. With witty banter, simmering tension, and a dash of emotional depth, this story is perfect for fans of sports romances that balance heat with heart.

Reece is known for his easy charm and one-night-only rule. He has no problem moving on from a hookup—until Kenzie. She’s the one girl who shudders under his touch one second and bolts the next. Now, she’s stuck in his mind, and that’s the last thing he needs while trying to prove to his coach that he’s serious about leading his team back to the Frozen Four. When he realizes that convincing Kenzie to fake a relationship could solve both their problems, he jumps at the opportunity. He’ll show the world he’s a changed man, and in return, she gets to stick it to her ex. Win-win. As long as he remembers his number one rule: only one night, no attachments.

Kenzie has spent her life playing by the rules—until her ex-boyfriend proves that even the "safe" guys can break hearts. She’s tired of being predictable, tired of being the girl who gets walked over. When one impulsive night with Reece shatters her good-girl persona, she tells herself it’s just a mistake, a fluke, a moment of bad judgment. But when her ex won’t leave her alone, and Reece presents a tempting proposition—fake date him and finally have some fun—she makes a choice she never would have before. If she’s going to be reckless, she might as well do it right.

But the more time they spend together, the harder it is to keep up the act. The stolen touches start to linger, the teasing banter turns into something deeper, and the lines between what’s real and what’s pretend blur until there’s no distinction left. Reece, the ultimate playboy, suddenly finds himself wanting more than just a temporary game. And Kenzie, who was so sure this was just an escape, starts to wonder if she’s been running from the very thing she needs.

With jealousy, rivalry, and sizzling chemistry driving them closer, Kenzie and Reece are about to find out that sometimes, the games we play lead to the most unexpected victories. Ice Cold Rival is a must-read for fans of college sports romances, reformed playboys, and fake dating that turns all too real.

Kenzie and Reece both want to change their reputations.

After transferring schools to be near her hockey player boyfriend, now ex, Kenzie is left without a support system when he spreads lies about her. Now that she is out of her long-term relationship, she is ready to shed her “good girl” image and people-pleasing ways.

Reece is seen as a carefree playboy at school and a puppet for his wealthy family, but he is determined to prove himself. Hoping to become team captain in his senior year, he and Kenzie agree to fake date, each hoping it will help them reshape how others see them.

Nikki Hall once again delivers an engaging college sports romance, filled with warm, charismatic, and quirky characters. The fictional Teagan University in Texas provides a rich backdrop for a variety of stories.

Reece, a familiar character from previous books, is given a deeper exploration of his background and motivations. His character growth stood out because he realizes early on that he is unhappy with his current path and makes intentional changes to reach his goals. Similarly, Kenzie embarks on her own journey to assert herself, refusing to be a doormat for her family and those around her. Their growing confidence throughout the book had me cheering them on.

The story unfolds over a short timeline with minimal focus on hockey as a game and instead emphasizes team dynamics and interpersonal relationships. This may be because only part of the season takes place within the book. I expect the final book in the series will wrap up the season. While I appreciate that the author avoids excessive technical details, I would have liked to see more gameplay on the page. At times, hockey feels like a background element that is mainly referenced when players are absent due to practice or games. Although I am not an avid hockey fan, I enjoy the structure it brings to a romance story.

I am excitedly awaiting the final book in this series and to learn more of Mase’s story.

I am grateful to have received this free ARC from Nikki Hall, which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily share my review.

I was excited to receive an advance copy of this book as an ARC reader. I've been a big fan of all the TU characters and was thrilled to finally see Reese get his story.
**some general spoilers, but I tried not to give specific details**
After teasing the arrival of Tobias Kane in the other Beyond the Ice books, he's finally at Teagan U and looking to cause trouble. Reese is done with the hookup scene & literally (unknowingly) runs into Kane's ex Kenzie at a party, kick starting a mild obsession, a second meet cute where Kenzie summons up her courage to win a bet & shut up a mean girl, and a whole fake dating situation that is well written & free of all the usual annoying pitfalls. Both Reese and Kenzie are well written, mature, and so supportive of each other - and Reese really gets his chance to show his leadership and maturity both on and off the ice as he helps Kenzie with her bucket list, her confidence, and his quest for team captain and independence from his overbearing family. Absolutely loved him, and I didn't think he could top Gavin and Cole....

Loved how both of the characters helped each other see their potential, built the other up, and also that Reese respected Kenzie's wishes when she said she wanted to handle her drama herself.

Mason's strong silent type and sweet duck daddy is too good and I CANNOT WAIT for his story next!!! We've been getting glimpses of him over the past few books, and getting more in this one with his protectiveness over both Kenzie & Reese, and his surprise computer skills - I cannot get enough!

Loved this book, and can't wait for the next one. Rated 4/5 - loved the book and the characters, but really wish that it was longer & more time had been spent heating up the rivalry between Tobias & Reese, Amanda & Kenzie, and even some more time digging into the family pressure from both Reese's grandmother and Kenzie's mom and sister. It felt like a quick read and I just didn't want to get out of their world as quickly as I did, I wanted more. 😀

Let me start this off by saying I have been waiting since July of last year (after reading Ice Cold Heart) for this book and it was worth the wait! I devoured it in one sitting and I could not help smiling like an idiot and kicking my feet like a schoolgirl. I love Reece and Kenzie dare I say as much as I love Gavin and Eva. I loved Reece since the first book and I knew when we were finally able to dig deeper into him, it would make me giggle and blush like a dork. 😂

Truly my only complaint is that I wish it was longer, I think it's the shortest in the series so far but only by like 10-20 pages I believe. And once or twice I felt like something was missing like it may have been taken out in the editing process but it did not hinder the story whatsoever.

When I review books it's normally just giving stars based on vibes because really I care about how the book made me feel and this book made me so happy and giddy. I definitely recommend this entire series!

P. S. I also loved the set up it gave for book 4, which is Mase's book and I am so excited for that!

Who doesn’t love a little good girl/bad boy fake dating revenge plot to spice up their kindle? Despite his one and done rule, Kenzie is the hook up Reece can’t stop thinking about. So when they start fake dating to stick it to her ex, Reece doesn’t know if he’ll be able to keep from coming back for seconds. Or thirds. Or if he even wants to try.

As you would expect, the chemistry between these two is so good. There’s something about two characters who have been kind of shoved into a box by everyone else about who they should be finding someone else who sees them for who they really are that just makes me twitterpated. And, as usual in this series, there’s plenty of found family side character hijinx, including some sassy pets. This was a really fun, spicy read that’s better than peanut butter.

This series has been so much fun to read. Reece and Kenzie’s story was no different. Though I got angry at her house sisters and douchey ex on multiple occasions. But Reece is was book boyfriends are made of, and Kenzie deserved the world. These two together were fun and sexy, but so much more! They got the things about each other that everyone else close to them missed. I love seeing how characters can just click and reading as it’s happening is so much fun.

Thank you to team Nikki for the ALC!

Now I will patiently wait for the story I’ve needed since the beginning! I can’t wait to get inside Mase’s head!

This is the third book in this impressive series and this is Reece and Kenzie’s story.
Reece is a hockey player who does not do relationships, until he crosses paths with a heartbroken Kenzie, but a 1-night stands changes everything.
This is a beautifully written easy to read story, which has family, friendships, emotions, heartbreak, fake relationship, trust, humor, witty banter, revenge, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and fun, compelling page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

This was a good book for what I needed it to be. Reece and Kenzie had a cute story about fake dating to help the other out: Reece to get captain of the hockey team and get his grandmother off his back and Kenzie to get her ex and sorority sisters off hers. It was cute and I enjoyed seeing them together. He definitely fell first. I don’t know if I’d read Cole or Gavin’s story but I would definitely read Mase’s story. He was very protective of Kenzie and hilarious in a blunt way. I would recommend if you’re looking for something short, cute, and quick.

I was surprised I was chosen to receive an ARC copy of Cold Ice Rival. I have read all the books in the Beyond The Ice series by Nikki Hall. Cold Ice Rival is another college hockey winner.
An excellent storyline and witty banter between Reece and Kenzie. I enjoyed the fake dating where Reece was able to draw Kenzie out from being a people pleaser and standing up for herself, particularly with her family and ex-boyfriend. At the same time, Kenzie was able to show Reece that not all girls are after the same thing. Kenzie didn't have any close friends until she discovered found family at the hockey house. Reece and Kenzie helped each other find their inner strengths. I like that Reece realized he had a choice. He could be like his father and get things the easy way, or he could work hard to reach his goals and have the satisfaction of attaining them.

“What’s your name” “Reece” “Like the candy” sold! Plus he has a peanut butter addiction I mean with a name like Reece you better. Another fake dating book but they really sucked at it. Like the only fake part of their fake dating relationship is the fact they called it fake dating.

This is book 3 of the series, but it is a standalone. I was so excited to read this. I enjoyed the previous two books in the series and was looking forward to Reece's book because he's been an entertaining side character. With his story, he proves there is more to him than meets the eye. I really liked Kenzie, she's an awesome female main and a pretty perfect foil for Reece. Seeing Kenzie grow and find her inner strength throughout the book was so satisfying.

I cannot wait to read Mase’s book next. I do love that grumpy vampire 😂

I loved Reece and Kenzie! I’m not usually much of a fan of the manwh*re trope, but this story was well written. I really enjoyed how Reece took everything more seriously and was pretty much all in with Kenzie from the beginning even if he didn’t quite realize it at first. I also loved reading about Kenzie’s growth as a character throughout the story. The chemistry was amazing too. I can’t wait for Mase’s story next!

I received an advance copy for an honest review.

I loved this book. I didn’t want to put it down. In the previous two books of the series, Reece comes across as a bit of a shallow playboy, but we see glimpses here and there of something more. His care for sassy Henry, his respect for ball busting Eva, his concern for a reclusive and withdrawn Mase. Each start to reveal that Reece is a man who cares more deeply than he lets others see.

Kenzie is the epitome of a people pleaser. She’s spent her life smothering her own wants and desires to avoid confrontation. After a situation that forces her to take notice, she’s ready to start living life on her terms.

December 2025 update: I had the opportunity to do an advanced listen of the audio of this story. Honestly, I liked the story more via audio than I did when I had eyeball read it. When I read with my eyes, I felt like the pacing was off but I didn't feel like I picked up on that as much with the audio. I still enjoyed Reece's secret cinnamon roll side and seeing Kenzie grow as a person. This is my first listen with each of these narrators. Bryant isn't how I would have imagined Reece sounding but, regardless, both narrators did a good job with the text.

ARC review for Ice Cold Rival by Nikki Hall

Thanks to Nikki for the ARC opportunity!

Featured tropes: fake dating, friends to lovers, reformed playboy, he falls first, sports romance, rival's ex

Trigger warning: emotionally manipulative ex, MCs undervalued by their family, brief emotional/mental episode with side character, physical violence (one punch)

Review: 3/5

I was so excited to come back to TU! Let's jump in!

Things I liked:
- I obviously loved returning to TU. I love the characters we've met here and enjoy getting to see them again. The little Easter Eggs and call backs from previous books make me happy (although you totally don't miss anything if you haven't read the prior books).
- I love a secret cinnamon roll MC. Reece has spent the entirety of his time at TU as a one night only kind of guy. But when he finds the right girl? You instantly find out how much of a sweetheart he is. For a man with little to no relationship experience, he figures it out pretty quickly.
- I liked seeing Kenzie grow during the book. She went from a people pleasing supporting role to main character energy within her own life over the few months the book seems to span. And it was great seeing her put Kane in his place. Couldn't have happened to a better guy ;)
- As usual, Nikki provides absolute banger book pets. Loved getting some Boo and Sunny time with the cameos from Henry (and a future puppy book pet...?!)!

Things I disliked or missed the mark:
- The pacing in the whole thing felt really off to me. The book seems to span the first semester of their senior year at TU and man, do those months fly. The book clocks in at 248 pages but could easily have used another 30-50 to help flesh out the story a little without really ramping up the length. Everything just seemed to move very quickly and, while the book spans several months, it doesn't feel that way because a lot of passage of time is along the lines of "The next few weeks were a blur..." type phrasing. You can assume Kenzie and Reece's relationship develops during that time but you don't see it so, for example, when Reece realizes he wants their fake relationship to be real, as the reader, it seems like it comes out of left field because really, we haven't participated in any of that build up. It left me feeling a little unfulfilled and wanting more.

Overall, I liked the story but the pacing just really threw me off. I’d still recommend a read but be prepared for a little choppiness and a very quickly moving story. That said, I still can't wait to keep coming back to TU. I am so hyped for Mase's story and to learn more about his mysterious background!

This series just keeps getting better! Loved that they were going through similar struggles with familial expectations and realized what they wanted for their future and what they were worth.

We got to see a totally different side of Reece (former party playboy) while he worked towards his goal of being captain of the hockey team. Even though the idea of fake dating with Kenzie was his idea, he was still very considerate, patient, and a pillar of support for her. Kenzie was the typical good girl next door who got burned by her ex, who constantly gaslit her and was trying to make her life at their new school a living hell. She was such a sweet and caring person (albeit a people pleaser), and I'm so glad she got brought into the group. I loved how Reece and Kenzie helped each other see their potential (which was always downplayed by their friends and family) and built each other up. Their growth as characters was really nice to read, and their personalities really brought out the best in each other.

As usual, there were more duck shenanigans (Henry does make a return!) and the addition of Boo, and there were some scenes with Gavin and Eva (who are now alumni). I can't wait for Mase's book as he's always been such a mystery throughout this series (adored his relationship with Sunny).

I wished it was longer so that we got to see more of a rivalry between Reece and Tobias (Kenzie's ex), a little more hockey action, and more family pressure and reconciliation.

4.5

ICE COLD RIVAL is the third instalment in Nikki Hall’s contemporary new adult BEYOND THE ICE erotic, hockey romance series focusing on the Teagan University Wildcats hockey team. This is college senior and soon to be team captain Reece Tanner and Kenzie Booth’s story line. ICE COLD RIVAL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Reece and Kenzie) ICE COLD RIVAL follows the building but fake relationship between Reece Tanner and Kenzie Booth. Reece Tanner wants the position of team captain but his off-ice antics are a black mark against his reputation. Kenzie Booth’s ex boyfriend cheated with not one but two women, and our heroine was determined to keep him in her rear view. A chance meeting between Reece and Kenzie found our couple agreeing to ‘fake date’ in an effort to appease Reece’s coach, and to keep Kenzie’s mother from pushing her back with her ex boyfriend but jealousy will rear its’ proverbial head, and target out story line heroine.

Reece Booth comes from money, and in this, our hero doesn’t do relationships but something about Kenzie draws Reece like a moth to a flame. Kenzie’s ex is one of Reece’s hockey teammates, a fellow player who is determined to destroy our heroine’s life.

The relationship between Reece and Kenzie begins as a fake relationship but quickly turns into something more. Kenzie’s sister is getting married, and Reece is the perfect foil for our heroine’s revenge. Reece is determined to make captain but he is about to lose his heart to our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text

The energetic secondary and supporting characters include several of Reece’s teammates and their significant others:Gavin and Eva, Cole and Avery, as well as Mase, Marco; Kenzie’s ex Tobias Kane, and her sister Brighton.

ICE COLD RIVAL is a story of betrayal and vengeance, secrets and acceptance, family, relationships, and love. The premise is captivating and entertaining; the romance is seductive and provocative ;the characters are charismatic and dynamic.

I absolutely love @ books and have numerous copies of each one. Getting this ARC was such an amazing privilege that I'm still smiling from it. This is an interconnected series. You don't need to read the other books but they are so good I highly recommend you do. I have been in a MASSIVE reading slump but that meant nothing when it came to her book. I could NOT put it down. I devoured it in one sitting.

Reese
He has been known to party and hook up with everyone in the previous two books. When his best friend and former captain graduates and he enters his senior year he decides he needs to make a change. He has a rule, NEVER more than one night. He is absolutely the goofball who hides behind jokes to try and protect himself from the outside world. He doesn't want to take the easy way out and turn out like his father. He just wants to prove to everyone, especially himself that he can take things seriously.

Kenzie
Heartbroken and wanting revenge she finds herself at a party doing things she never does. She has lived a life of being put on display and trying to keep up appearances for her family. She never does what she wants and let's everyone decide for her. That all changes when she meets Reese. He helps her make a list of things she's always dreamed of doing.

I loved every second of this story. They were so perfect for eachother and were exactly what the other person needed. Their humor had me dying the entire time and their chemistry had me swooning 🥵
I will not lie. I got so happy and laughed so hard when he said they could be the next Voren (book 1 in her football series). Soren and Vi are my favorites. I was a little worried about another fake dating but let's be real there was nothing fake about their relationship, it was just their way of avoiding stressing over titles.

Seriously every second of this story was entertaining and fun. There wasn't a moment that felt like it dragged on too long. It was all perfectly paced. I loved the little snippets from the previous characters as well as the nerd humor mixed in (pokemon illegal gambling ring 🤣)

If you love goofy yet protective Hockey guys then THIS IS THE STORY FOR YOU. All her stories are literally perfection. I am so ready for Mase.

I was beyond excited and honored to be selected as an ARC reader! I’ve read every one of Nikki’s books and was eagerly awaiting Reece’s story!

Reece, the resident hockey playboy who doesn’t take life too seriously, is entering his senior year. Reece soon realizes that if he wants a shot at Captain, and to be taken more seriously by his coach and teammates, he needs to start treating hockey like the future career he wants it to be. Easier said than done when your rival, Tobias Kane, is suddenly on the same team as you and gunning for the Captain spot too. Enter Kenzie.

Kenzie, the sweet girl-next-door who always tried to please others, followed her long-term bf “Toby” to a new school only to find him cheating on her merely days in. Questioning her relationship and her ability to stand up for herself, she turns to a hot hockey player (Reece) for “one night only”. What they both discover is how they could benefit from “fake dating” each other - Reece to show he’s settled down from partying and Kenzie to get back at her ex.

As proven before with “fake dating,” keeping real feelings out of the equation proves more difficult as Reece and Kenzie begin to fall for each other and they realize what was missing from their lives and past relationships.

Reece and Kenzie both go through incredible character development as they offer mutual encouragement, support, and a safe space to grow into the new versions of themselves they want to become.

Of course, fans of the series will love seeing Reece’s teammates and their gfs, as well as our queen Eva and Sunny & Henry - your favorite ducks!

My only constructive feedback (hence 4 stars) was that I felt the transition for Reece was a little too seamless for me - knowing Reece as we did as being such a player and jokester - I expected more bumps in the road for him personally - maybe a little more fear of commitment and trust? I think compared to Kenzie (who ofc had reason to be hesitant in the relationship), Reece seemed to struggle way less internally. Though sometimes when you’re ready, you’re ready! This was just a personal preference for me.

Otherwise, highly recommend Ice Cold Rival and can’t wait to see what Nikki releases next!

🏒Ice Cold Rival🏒
Beyond The Ice #3

By Nikki Hall

🏒 College Romance
🏒 Hockey Romance
🏒 Sports Romance

⭐ 5/5

Kenzie, she has to find out who she
Reece, never wants a woman close to him again

Kenzie’s thought: I didn’t need to trust myself. I needed to trust Reece - and I did.

Quote: ”I love you more than anything else in my life, including peanut butter, and I want you with me all the time.”

Reece and Kenzie

I have waited for this story so much, and it didn’t disappoint. Two characters who had their experience with disappointment through family and others. Who understood the issues of the other one without telling too much and exactly that was what made them so perfect for each other.
They weren’t supposed to care for each other or catch feelings, but in the end, they did. Reece and Kenzie’s story is a slow burn one, full of chemistry and developing feeling without wanting or expecting too.
Reece has his secrets and for good reasons he doesn’t let people get close, especially women. His only goal in life is hockey related and to achieve that he has to change some things of lifestyle. That is where Kenzie comes in the picture.
Kenzie is fresh out of a relationship, one where she lost sight of who she really is. running literally into Reece helped her get some issues off her back, at least at first.
But trouble finds its way when it must, and so it is there when Kenzie and Reece finally get to a point when they head in the right direction with their pretending.
A little chaos and riding high emotions make their happy end a really hard fought and deserving one. A really sweet and wonderful story with a swoony guy whom you least expected one to be.

Sweet & spicy college hockey romance

4⭐️ 2.5🌶️ Book 3 in the Beyond the Ice college hockey 🥅 🏒 series

Kenzie transfers schools to be near her boyfriend, now ex, but he spreads lies about her. She wants to get revenge and shed her ‘good girl’ image. Reece wants to be team captain in his senior year but he has an image as a playboy rather than a leader. To convince his coach and teammates he’s up for the challenge, he makes a deal with Kenzie to fake date. The more time they spend together, however, lines between what’s real and pretend blur. Reece realizes he likes Kenzie and wants to break his ‘one-night-only’ rule, and Kenzie discovers Reece is more than just an escape. I loved their chemistry, witty banter, text exchanges, her sassiness , his hot 🥵 dominance, and their individual character development.

“This thing between us hasn't been fake in a long time. Maybe it never was. Neither of us wants to admit it, but I know you feel it too."

‘Reece had shown how he felt about me in a million ways. I was willing to fight for me because Reece had helped me believe in myself. Why wouldn't I give him the same opportunity?’

“Now, she's all I see. All I want to see."

‘I hadn't noticed, but Reece did most of my laundry now. He'd cleared a drawer in his dresser and space in his closet, and he put my clothes away there. He gave me food when I got hangry, he made me laugh when I got upset, he took care of me - without making me feel incapable or beholden.’

‘I'd finally figured out how to fight for what I wanted, and I wanted her.’

‘I could have what I wanted. Captain. Hockey. Kenzie.
All I had to do was convince her we were good together.’

"Ice Cold Rival" by Nikki Hall is a sizzling college hockey romance that masterfully blends the irresistible allure of fake dating with the fiery tension of an enemies-to-lovers dynamic. From the first witty exchange to the lingering stolen touches, this book is an addictive treat for anyone who loves a sports romance with both heat and heart.

Reece, the notorious charmer with a strictly enforced "one night only" rule, finds his playboy persona challenged by the enigmatic Kenzie. She's the one woman who both captivates and confounds him, making him question his carefully constructed walls just as he needs to prove his leadership to his hockey team. Their solution? A mutually beneficial fake relationship designed to reshape their reputations and maybe, just maybe, drive her annoying ex away.

Kenzie, tired of being the predictable "good girl," is ready to embrace a little chaos after a life spent playing by the rules. One impulsive night with Reece cracks her facade, and his tempting fake-dating proposition offers the perfect opportunity to finally live life on her own terms. What begins as a strategic game soon ignites into something undeniably real.

Hall expertly crafts the slow burn between Reece and Kenzie, their teasing banter evolving into a deeper connection that neither anticipated. The lines between their fake act and genuine feelings blur with every stolen glance and lingering touch. Witnessing Reece, the ultimate player, yearn for more than a temporary game, and Kenzie discover the strength in her own desires, is utterly captivating.

With the backdrop of college hockey rivalries and simmering jealousy, "Ice Cold Rival" delivers a must-read experience for fans who crave reformed playboys, strong heroines, and a fake-dating trope that melts the ice. Get ready for a story where the games they play lead to a love that scores big.

Captain Campaign-

5 stars 3.5 spice - This is Reece’s story. With Gavin gone, he’s decided he wants to be the captain. He ends up hooking up with a stranger, Kenzie, at a party. One who runs scared immediately after. That night Kenzie found her boyfriend Toby cheating with 2 other women. Toby is the creepy teammate who helped drug Avery. A week later, they run into each other at Kenzie’s sorority. They decide to fake date in order to get payback for Kenzie and the captaincy for Reece.

Reece doesn’t date ever, no repeat hookups either. But it turns out, he’s an excellent boyfriend to Kenzie. They build a real friendship that is super supportive despite lots of negative gossip around campus. Their feelings grow as he helps her cross things off her fun list. The trip to the pet charity was so romantic and sweet.

I love how the roommates step up to support Reece. The friend group makes the book believable. Sunny the duck is hilarious. I also like how the group rallies around Kenzie toward the end against Toby. Eva helps Kenzie own her power.

The family dynamics are complicated. Kenzie’s mother is so unsupportive throughout as she holds on her dream of Kenzie marrying Toby. She’s very dismissive of Kenzie’s feelings and aspirations apart from Toby. Reece’s Gran is equally as bad. I enjoyed the dinner where he stands up for himself.

Mase’s book is definitely set up in this story. He’s such an enigma. Can’t wait to learn more about the brooding goalie.

Overall, I binged this in one sitting. Highly recommend if you like golden retriever hockey players and cinnamon roll nerdy girls. A lot of the previous characters are included in this book, so it would be best enjoyed after reading the first two books.

Fun, flirty and cute pets!

This book was such a fun read with lots of sweet, flirty and cute moments. And I can’t forget the debut of the precious Sunny and Boo, I wanted more of them!!!
I absolutely could not put this book down and finished it in one go. The characters were very loveable and were such a perfect match.
Reece and Kenzie were the epitome of adorable together. They meshed so well and their chemistry was delicious. I enjoyed how their relationship developed from fake dating into something real. Their sassy and hilarious banter was fantastic. Reece was such a sweetheart , he was so much more than the party boy everyone saw him to be. His support, thoughtfulness and protectiveness over Kenzie was very swoony. He definitely helped rebuild her shattered confidence and encouraged her to believe in herself.
I sympathized with Kenzie's heartbreak and totally wanted to smack her ex but I liked how sassy, and independent she was. She regained her self worth and stood up for herself when it mattered. She was also good for Reece, she grounded him and helped him be comfortable being his true self.
Reeces's friend group and roommates were all supportive and they stood up for both Reeces and Kenzie when necessary . I loved how they accepted Kenzie and went to battle for her when she needed it. The cameos by Eva ,the gang and of course the OG Henry was awesome!
I absolutely enjoyed Sunny and Boo, they were just adorable!
Nikki Hall has again written an easy, fun, heartwarming book filled with wonderful characters and animals, steamy moments and funny banter.

5/5⭐️ 2/5🌶️

I’ve been waiting for Reece’s book since I found out he was getting his next. I think it’s safe to say that Reece has taken over Cole’s spot as top Beyond the Ice MMC.

A reformed playboy is always a good story when it’s done right, and Nikki did Reece justice. Making a conscious effort to change his ways inevitably led him to Kenzie. Offering to help her also helps him in achieving his goals. Little does he know, he never needed her, but he had wanted her from the get go. Reece is the perfect amount of funny, ambitious and protective while being supportive of Kenzie standing up for herself. There isn’t a thing I would change about him.

Poor Kenzie and her terrible taste in a boyfriend. It was nice to see she ditched him when she realized what he was really like. Thinking a one night stand will get back at her ex, Reece was the perfect person for the task. Weeks later a coincidental run in set in motion change in Kenzie’s life she didn’t realize could happen. She ended up being stronger than she knew she was, made unexpected friendships and fixed her family relationships. She also ended up loving our goofy playboy for exactly who he was inside.

Ice Cold Rival continued giving us the always lovable duck shenanigans, group banter and hurricane Eva.

I can’t wait for Mase to get his book and see what he is hiding from everyone.

At just under 250 pages this book was a quick and engaging read that has me hooked. It had been a while since I read the previous book in this series, so I sorta forgot Reece was a carefree playboy. But he wasn’t…or isn’t anymore. In his last year of college, he seems to have had an epiphany about who he really wants to be and really wants to do with his life, so he needs to clean up his act and put his nose to the ground and grind. I honestly love when an MMC has a reputation for being carefree and skating by in life turns his act around, especially if it’s with the help of the FMC that he ends up falling for! This was Reece and I loved him! I loved seeing Kenzie come into her own after losing the dead weight of her ex, Reece’s rival and teammate. She is a people-pleasing good girl who finds the strength to shed that part of herself. Reece supports and encourages her in this but he doesn’t 100% step in for her because he knows she can do it herself.

I was so happy that this book continued with the pet duck content and added a kitty to the mix. I can’t wait for Mase’s book, his character is so mysterious and I need to know more!

Oh my goodness, I really, really liked this book.
I'm glad I put my day off to good use and read this beauty!
Ice Cold Rival is a college hockey romance.
We have Kenzie who has recently -as in minutes ago- caught her boyfriend cheating.
She runs into, literally, Reece, who is a senior hockey player with a "no repeats" rule.
Feeling reckless and furious after catching her boyfriend in the act, Kenzie takes Reece by the hand and leads him upstairs. When I tell you that sparks fly, I ain't playin'.
Kenzie comes....to her senses and high tails it out of there.
Well you know what happens next...they meet again when neither expects it...but they haven't stopped thinking about that night.
Long story short, our sweet couple come to an understanding to their mutual benefit.
What I really loved about this story is the fact that they talk to each other. There are no misunderstandings or assumptions. They may wonder what the other is thinking but it never lasts long because they ask the questions. I love how they are there for each other. I love the found family feeling we get from Reece's roommates and friends. They are quick to accept Kenzie for who she is. And don't let me get started on the ducks!
Nikki Hall, you wrote a winner that makes me determined to go back and read the first two! I cannot wait for Mase's story!
Thank you so much for the ARC...I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I devoured this book in a day and loved Reece and Kenzie. Reece and Kenzie meet at a party and have a moment, after she finds her boyfriend cheating on her. They go their separate ways, Reece puts his focus on hockey and approaches his coach about becoming the new captain of the hockey team. After talking to his coach and friends, Reece realizes because of his past behavior, that nobody takes him seriously. Reece decides to get his act together and show that he deserves the captain spot. Kenzie is part of a sorority, but would rather stay in her room and read books because the other girls are bunch of mean girls. Reece decides to go to one more party and runs into Kenzie again, they go back to her room and start talking, and decide to fake date to help get her ex of her back and her sorority sisters, and make Reece look more responsible. As things escalate with Kenzie’s ex, who is also Reece’s teammate/rival, their feelings become stronger and they start dating for real. I loved how Reece stepped up and showed everyone what he was capable of and did everything he could, to keep Kenzie safe. I also loved how with Reece’s support, Kenzie stopped being a people pleaser and stood up for herself. Kenzie and Reece, ended up being exactly what the other needed and I’m glad they got their HEA. If you enjoy a good college hockey romance, add Ice Cold Rival to your TBR on March 21st💙
