Two wounded heroes shattered by tragedy and paralyzed by guilt and must find their footing and work together to catch a killer.

A warrant service in the San Bernardino Mountains goes horribly wrong when an IED blast kills four police officers. Devastated by the loss of her team, the lone survivor, Long Beach sergeant Jodie King, struggles with her guilt and grief, especially as the case remains open with no clear leads or suspects. Weeks after the explosion, Jodie retires from the police department and returns to the mountain bomb site seeking peace and resolution . . . only to find herself in the crosshairs once again.

Sam Gresham just happens to be in the right place at the right time when shots are fired at Jodie. The newest detective for the county sheriff’s department, Sam is assigned to work the IED, his first case back after his own traumatic loss. While Sam sees an opportunity to help Jodie heal from her lingering scars, Jodie hopes fresh eyes will bring new insight to the investigation. Because after this latest shooting, one thing seems Jodie has always been the intended target—and the threat may be much closer to her than anyone wants to admit.

Christian romantic suspense.

An IED killed four police officers in the San Bernardino Mountains. Suffering from survivor's guilt after losing her team, Sergeant Jodie King retires from the force. She meets Sam Gresham a new detective working the IED case.

One Final Target is more investigative with little romance which is fine with me. Even after Jodie retires, she was not out of danger but still has a target on her back. Who would want her dead and why? A great pace mystery, suspense with compelling characters. I wasn't able to guess whodunit until the reveal! There are many references to God and faith as the characters deal with the tragedies.

A solid read/listen by a former Long Beach California police officer turned author. 7/10~ 3.5⭐

I love a good fast paced suspense thriller, so was excited to read this one. I failed to realize it was Christian based, and while I am an agnostic, I usually have no problem reading books with religious references, if they aren’t too preachy. However, this book started right away with a bible reference, and I knew I was in for a doozy. I was determined because I find a lot of legitimacy and usually love books written by current and former police officers, so I kept going. Oh boy. I really couldn’t wrap my head around the references to God supporting the officers in the way that the characters were praying for them. I struggled with how many references and how strongly in my face the references to God were throughout the book and I found them to be too preachy for me. I think that had the references been toned down, I would have loved this book because it was a great story underneath. So, this is a mixed review for me. On one hand I just don’t get about half of the book, and on the other hand, I loved the other half of it. The author is clearly talented for being able to provoke such strong emotions from their audience though! The suspense was there and on point, I couldn’t wait to find out what was going on, if only I wasn’t aggravated with the characters the entire time. I do think that among certain audiences this book is going to be a huge hit, however, I do think that this book could have a much larger audience than it currently does the way it stands.

Thank you so much to the publisher and netgalley for allowing me to read this book.

This cover caught my attention. Then I read the blurb. I am intrigued by this book for a couple of reasons. First - I worked in Long Beach, CA where the heroine was a cop. Second - I have been camping in the San Bernardino Mountains for more than 60 years. So, like I said, I'm intrigued. It is rare that I read a book and know, first-hand, every scene site. This book more than met my expectations and the narration by Jeannie Sheneman was a delight. I love the organic references to these character's faith in God. I know a lot of cops and most of them have a deep-seated faith. That faith helped both Jodie and Sam cope with the tragedies they endured and sustained them through the tumultuous investigation.

Two tortured, grief ravaged souls come together with a new purpose: find the bomber who killed Jodie King's team before he can kill Jodie also. While serving a warrant an IED in a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains killed her team and Jodie is having trouble coming to terms with what happened. Three months after the blast, she takes a trip to the site and a sniper opens fire on her.

Sam Gresham has suffered the loss of his partner and is just now returning to the San Bernardino Sherriff's Department. He has just been assigned to the IED case and decided to take a look at the site. What he encounters is a sniper trying to take out Jodie. With the shooting, the focus of the investigation is renewed and refocused. This time on Jodie and if the attack could have been personal. Now Sam and Jodie must find the person responsible.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

Two hurting people feeling guilt about their partners killed in action. Taking a higher priority is trying to figure out who is continuing to hunt down one of them. I didn't figure it out until the reveal.

“God is good, even when life is not.“

Oh my goodness, One Final Target is a tension-filled ride with complex layers and surprising twists.

The story kicks off with a bang, and I was instantly engrossed in who wanted Jodie’s team – and herself – dead. I felt as though I too were trying to stay a step ahead of the danger that plagues Sam and Jodie at every turn, and I stayed firmly invested in trying to figure out who was behind the threats to her life and who could be trusted. Cantore caught me off guard more than once with a plot turn, and I only saw the final answer just ahead of our intrepid heroes.

Both Jodie and Sam are incredibly compelling main characters, and the differences in how each is coping with their traumatic on-the-job losses and subsequent survivor’s guilt made them all the more so. There are no pat answers to their authentic and raw questions for God, especially Jodie’s, and the author doesn’t give any, even as she keeps pointing them back to the truth of His Word. And while I didn’t go into this novel expecting the faith thread to be so impactful, it nevertheless resonated deeply with me – as I suspect it will for anyone who has ever wrestled with how to reconcile God’s goodness with soul-deep grief and disappointment in what He allowed to happen.

Bottom Line: One Final Target is one of my new favorites by Janice Cantore. The suspense thread kept me on the edge of my seat, the gentle romance made me happy, and the exploration of the goodness of God in the ‘badness’ of life rang true for my own journey. The author’s experience in the law enforcement field gives her novels depth and detail when it comes to police procedure, and One Final Target is no exception. I learned new things, gained new perspectives, and enjoyed myself all at the same time. An entertaining romantic suspense with meaning and insight.

“God is good, even when life is not.”
What a crazy ride for Sergeant Jodie King as life deals her blow after blow. Reeling from the deaths of her whole team, she discovers that someone is out to see her dead. No stranger to grief after his partner dies, Detective Sam Gresham is at the right place to save Jodie from a sniper. Together they try to figure out who still wants to kill her.
Filled with lots of twists and turn and possible suspects, this is a nail biter of a story. The author used her experience as a police officer to make this an interesting, authentic and thrilling tale. The pacing was great and kept me guessing as to who the villain was.
The two protagonists are Christians but at different places of healing as they deal with the deaths of those close to them. “Faith does not always take away the pain, but it does give you the ability to handle the pain.”
Fantastic look into the warped mind of a killer. With a solid faith thread, this story follows the spiritual growth of Jodie and Sam.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

An important thing I overlooked when I selected this book, is that it is a Christian mystery, filled with references to God, as the characters pray for each other.

Don't get me wrong, it includes a compelling enough mystery, about someone leading a team, who feels guilty about those she has lost. . I prefer my mysteries sans other distractions such as: politics, religion, and ideally without sex or romance sidelines (this book doesn't include the sexual scenes of course).

I like pure mysteries, and I cannot even IMAGINE cops or ANY characters praying for the healing powers of God to support a fellow officer.

Definitely NOT my cuppa, I found it preachy and irritating - your mileage may very of this is the type of mystery you are searching for...

About half way through this novel I had to set it aside and move on.

Pre review thoughts: These sort of books are so hard to door me to rate. I loved the on going action and the fact that this was not just a Christian book with a slight mention of faith. It was throughout the whole book!, which is truly kinda rare lately. (Nothing wrong with “just a clean read, but I wish they were labeled as such. BUT the faith and plot are all so similar. Guy come to a woman’s rescue, and the faith is bc they experienced something life shattering. This is so real don’t get me wrong but there is so much more Christians deal with. Sooo what to do what do?

Ultimately I’m going to give it a 4.5*! While the basics are the same they were done super well! This book kept my attention from the start(for a little bit it got repetitive ) and the full blown faith content over ways anything else.

Jodie goes into a home to serve a warrant when she quickly realizes it’s been a set up. After being saved from a team member; Jodie’s team of 4 people die in a house explosion. When Jodie returns to the scene of the crime months later she is meet with another unexpected experience. As a new agent ,Sam, arrives to help on the investigation he quickly has to come Jodie’s aide as more attacks are to come. Through investigation, Jodie and Sam realize the explosion was meant for her, and the attacks had to be someone she was close to. As her and her story unfold of her childhood you begin to see why she is struggling in her faith. Sam also has been dealing with the loose of his cop partner. Guilt of surviving makes holding to “God’s promise of it working together for your good”hard. This book takes you on Jodie and Sam’s separate healing journeys of their past all while trying to figure their future.

A Christian thriller…how did I have no idea this existed? I really enjoyed this and could definitely get into the genre more with books like this. Most thrillers are either too dark or not exciting enough but not this one! It was the perfect in between. Kept me wanting more without keeping me up at night.

"Four good cops died on my watch. They. Were. My. Responsibility."

Continuing to reel under relentless waves of grief and guilt over the deaths of her teammates, former police sergeant Jodie King is still trying to figure out what "life after" looks like; resigning from her job and taking an early pension has left her mentally, physically and spiritually adrift. Returning to the scene of the fatal explosion, she suddenly becomes an unknown shooter's bullseye, until a "superhero" in the form of officer Sam Gresham randomly shows up at exactly the right time. What were the chances?

Sam Gresham is well acquainted with loss, his body bears the scars of trying to rescue a fellow officer who was also a best friend; his heart is filled with compassion while observing the gaunt figure and haunted eyes that reside within the former special units officer. Jodie's scars penetrate deep on the inside, her faith questions are valid, and even to be expected, but it's the continued attempts on her life that are a grave concern. Sam is fully prepared to fight . . . on her behalf and to pray . . . for her faith to be renewed. Perhaps, after the dust settles the two of them can become much better acquainted.. . . . on a more personal level.

"Be still and know that I am God."

What great faith principles are embedded in this novel! Through multiple conversations with multiple characters, words of truth encircle Jodie in a protective covering of prayer and supplication, coaxing her heart to release its burden. The take-off and landing of this plot were exemplary . . . . I never saw the end coming and neither did the characters!

One Final Target by Janice Cantore
Audiobook Edition

From the very first minute of "One Final Target," Janice Cantore establishes a firm grip on the listener's attention, a hold she maintains skillfully throughout this twisting, action-packed narrative. Cantore's latest offering in contemporary romantic suspense is a vivid exploration of themes like grief, guilt, and the resilience of faith amidst trials.

The central characters, Long Beach Sergeant Jodie King and Detective Sam Gresham, are drawn with a keen sense of empathy. Both law enforcement officers, united by their experience of loss in the line of duty, navigate their survivor's guilt with strikingly different approaches. Their layered personalities add depth to a plot already brimming with suspense and intrigue.

One of the audiobook's standout features is its treatment of faith. Cantore doesn't shy away from the complexities of spiritual struggles. The story resonates particularly with those who have ever felt their prayers echo into a void, as Jodie does. A memorable quote from Jodie's friend Estella encapsulates this theme beautifully: "Faith doesn't always take away the pain, but it does give you the ability to handle the pain. God is good even when life isn't."

Jeannie Shenaman's narration is a key component of this audiobook's success. Her voice, imbued with a range of emotions, brings the characters and their challenges to life. Shenaman's performance enhances the storytelling, adding an extra layer of engagement to Cantore's already compelling narrative.

In conclusion, "One Final Target" is an audiobook that should not be missed by fans of romantic suspense, especially those who appreciate a strong Christian message. Cantore's skillful storytelling and Shenaman's expressive narration make this a must-listen. Its exploration of faith, grief, and healing is both timely and timeless, appealing to a wide range of listeners.

One Final Target by Janice Cantore might just be the best Christian Suspense book I've read in a while! Wow! All of the edge-of-your-seat, action-packed thriller, without feeling like you want to go lock your doors. It was perfectly written! 🙌

The characters were excellent and I loved seeing them all as they worked through their individual issues.

As for the mystery itself, I had suspicions but I was constantly second-guessing myself, trying to figure out who had the most to gain from it all. All in all, this was a *fabulous* book to introduce me to Janice Cantore's writing. I will definitely be checking out her backlist!

If you're like me, and you love books by authors such as Lynn H. Blackburn or Natalie Walters, this is one book you *have* to read!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book starts strong. Action is Packed throughout the entire book. It's a truly engaging book! It's a complex romantic suspense novel with plenty of twists and turns. Two wounded heroes shattered by tragedy and paralyzed by guilt, both are dealing with their trauma, Sam's scars are more physical and emotional, and Jodie's scars are more emotional, This story follows Jodie and Sam as they search for answers not only regarding the explosion that kills four police officers but also seeking peace and resolution to the devastating loss of her team... and they must find their footing and work together to catch a killer.

It is a pulse-pounding contemporary -Faith-filled- romantic suspense novel about overcoming grief and learning to trust again.

I’d been looking forward to One Final Target by Janice Cantore since I first heard of its existence. The novel has the perfect amount of mystery and thrill, flavored with a dash of romance. When I say a dash, I mean a dash. A sprinkle. Janice Cantore does not focus on a growing relationship—instead, the novel centers on the threat. In this case, an IED killed Jodie’s team several months ago. It looms over her, as Sam struggles to overcome the loss of his partner. When a sniper tries to shoot Jodie, Sam is in the right place to intervene. The case quickly becomes more complicated—and more dangerous—as details are revealed. Jodie and Sam can only hope they solve the case before Jodie loses her life.

As a former police officer, Janice Cantore provides novels that make sense. She pursues every lead and motive. Cantore marvelously portrays the plot from the beginning to the end. One Final Target is filled with twists, suspects, and speculation. Everything about Cantore’s newest novel is believable. I was left with no questions, no plot holes. Like a master investigator, she covers every detail. I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the story. One Final Target does not need any of the romance. The novel’s description calls it ”pulse-pounding,” and that is the perfect word for it. Exhilarating. Suspenseful. Real.

Grief is a heavy burden on the mind and soul. Jodie and Sam both struggle with it but in different ways. One Final Target depicts the war against despair so vividly. So poignantly. Being a Christian is not easy. Life after salvation is not sunshine and roses. The “prosperity gospel” is nothing but lies. The easiest time to be a Christian is during the good times. The darkest hours, however, it can be hard to find the light. It is hard to trust God when there are no answers. When survivor’s guilt kicks in. When God stays silent.

But, as Cantore wrote in the book: “God is good, even when life isn’t.” And “No one in this life is immune from bad things. Trusting God doesn’t mean no trials. Trusting God means an ever-present help when trials come.” God is there. He’s in the lions’ den. He’s in the fiery furnace. He’s there in our celebration and our pain. One Final Target by Janice Cantore offers comfort to the broken-hearted and weary. It provides a message of hope and closure. It is a wonderful novel for all readers and one I recommend whole-heartedly.

Thank you Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read and review One Final Target on NetGalley.

Published: 02/13/24

Narrator: Jeannie Sheneman

Stars: 2.5

Synopsis starts "A Warrant Service" and of course I saw genre: Christian, General Fiction (Adult), Romance and audiobook. Keeping with my plan to branch out of my norms, I put in the request to read.

What does Warrant Service mean? I thought maybe bounty hunter. After reading I still really don't know. Early on there was a team who entered a house, an explosion and one survivor. This is repeated numerous times throughout the book. While I recognize this is a police procedural and there are interviews, etc., repeating the situation in written/audio form left me in a challenging situation between finishing or not finishing the book.

Jodie, the main character, is a Christian woman. She prays and talks to God. I found those sections written well. My concern was group prayers and hugs going into a standoff and not portraying her realistically. Fortunately those things didn't happen. With respect to those character traits, you could have been watching me.

Jodie works around a lot of men, and is drawn to just one. I appreciated that. A person does not have to make rounds and date an entire office/force. There is a line -- be serious about the case and keep the romance on the back burner. As far as I was able to stay focused that happened.

I would love for Jeannie Sheneman to narrate books where empathy, compassion and respect are the driving forces for harsh realities. She has such a calming affect. She was too soft for this book.

Overall, this is a miss for me. It felt as if sections were written separately and Cantore tried to merge them. The ending left me shaking my head and wanting my time back. I'm rounding up to 3 stars. I would use this as a communication bridge with a daughter. There are several topics that could be initiated.

There was no foul language.

Explosive, bone-chilling suspense make this book a must read for suspense lovers. This book had everything I crave and love in a thriller including realistic investigative procedures, addictive characters that I loved and edgy suspense that kept me turning the pages late into the night.

Sgt. Jodie King and her team are tasked with serving a warrant which goes horribly wrong. Jodie is the only survivor, and she has a severe case of survivor's guilt and the blame game. Jodie decides to retire. While visiting the scene where her team was lost, someone starts shooting at her. Detective Sam Gresham happens to riding by and sees what is going on. He saves her life. Coincidentally he has been set up to work her case.

Sam and Jodie are more alike than they realize. Sam lost his partner in the line of duty. He is also suffering from survivor's guilt and plays the blame game with himself daily. You have two heroes who have suffered a life altering tragedy, but they are so set on blaming themselves for the loss that they cannot see the forest for the trees.

As the story continues to play out, it is evident that someone wants to take Jodie's life. The action was just right with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. I suspected everyone at one time or another. Then another twist would be thrown into the mix that left me scratching my head. I felt such empathy for both Sam and Jodie. They were both true heroes, but their grief had robbed them of any further joy in their lives. The suspense and intrigue will keep you glued to the pages with eye opening reveals that you will not see coming. Their faith has also been tested, and there are people in their lives who want to reopen their eyes to their need to lean on their faith. This is all while Jodie has no idea who she can trust as there seems to be a killer in their midst. Now I can breathe.

Thank you Tyndale House and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I been waiting to read these author book and I’m glad I saw this book at my local library because I can’t wait to dive into more of the books.

This was a fast paced read and it was a quick read for me. I didn’t see the ending coming to see who commit those crimes like I was expecting someone totally different from who it was. I’m glad they everyone got closure and this case in my mind brought two people one a former cop and one a cop together to help them out in their time of need I glad they did get to together at the end of the story I was really hoping that see each other outside of the case that brought them together.

This book was good. It’s labeled as a romantic suspense novel, but it was very, VERY subtle. It almost wasn’t there, and as someone who enjoys romance, I was highly disappointed. They had feelings for each other, but they kept it professional until everything got sorted out. But besides the romance being almost nonexistent, this was a great thriller and mystery. I seriously didn’t know who was good, bad, or even who to trust. The two main characters had lots of trauma from past situations, but Sam was able to help Jodie overcome hers. The ending was definitely a shocker, and it kind of hurt my heart. A little bit, though. Either way, if you’re looking for a thriller mystery book with a touch of romance, this is for you. If you’re looking for more romance, this wouldn’t be the best choice.

This was my second Janice Cantore read, and I liked it! The plot was exciting and explosive with a really interesting and twisty mystery. One thing I really appreciated about this book was the major focus on the characters’ faith. The level of faith elements varies amongst Christian fiction, but it really did play a major role in the both Jodie and Sam’s growth though the story, and you see them praying often and working through their struggles in understanding why God has allowed certain things to happen in their lives. Another thing I appreciated was the authenticity of the investigation. Cantore is a former law enforcement officer herself, and that really shines through her writing. The romance was pretty light, so if you prefer more suspense than romance in your books, you’d probably love One Final Target!

A big thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the audiobook ARC! All thoughts and opinions above are my own.

When Jodi King returns to the remains of the house where her team died in an explosion, and only she survived, someone once again tries to kill her, this time by shooting. Deputy Sam Gresham saves her. But it soon becomes clear that someone wants Jodi dead.
This fast-paced suspense novel is hard to put down. Both Sam and Jodi have suffered losses in their jobs as officers, but this murder of her team overwhelms her faith, her friendships, even her being able to do her job. Cantore, a former officer, surprised me in who the villain was. I always enjoy her books.

PRE-READ THOUGHTS
i went from so excited to “oh god what have I done”, I’m pretty sure the genres were updated after I requested this 😭

STATS
⚠️ Stay Safe, Friends: violence, death, murder, genre-typical warnings for cop-based thrillers
Cliffhanger: no
🌶 Spice Check: water
⭐️ Rating (?/5): 2/5
🔂 Re-Readability: no

Thank you, NetGalley, for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Let me just say that, although my rating is low, this book wasn’t necessarily bad or poorly written! It’s just not a genre that works for me (I swear this wasn’t listed as Christian fiction when I requested it or else I would never have picked up a book in a genre that is best suited for other readers 😭). While reviews are for readers, they’re also for the reviewer to sort their catalogues and libraries and reading history. So I’ll put my personal rating, but I’ll list my pros and cons below and you can determine if this would work for you!

description

SUMMARY + BASIC CHARACTER INFO, THOUGHTS, AND/OR DYNAMICS
After suffering great losses, two people are thrown together in another crisis. Working together to heal and to bring justice to those they lost, a retired officer and a detective have to consider everyone a suspect.

WHY YOU SHOULD PUSH THIS ONE UP/DOWN YOUR TBR

UP
•This book is well written! If you’re able to ignore things you don’t like in books (or if the things in this book are exactly what you’re looking for), I really see no reason why you shouldn’t at least give this one a shot. The reveal wasn’t immediately obvious, so if that’s important to you, there you go!

•The author is a former police officer! What this means is that you get an involved and detailed experience from two characters who are also involved in the police force. While this is not a requirement for an author to produce fantastic police-focused suspense, it usually helps and adds a bit of credibility to the processes and procedures described within.

•Even though the faith is a push down for me, this does portray people suffering from deep loss and grief and they rely on their faith to help ground them and heal. For anyone that may need to see a faith-based healing process, this might be a good one to pick up to help you feel like you have someone sitting next to you who knows what it’s like. Even if they’re just characters.

DOWN
•Faith and God are truly lines of lifeblood in this story. While it’s great for those who are looking for this in their books, it does not work for me and is actually one of the biggest reasons for my low rating. I am spiritual, but I do not enjoy reading about it in my fiction because it’s just such a individual and specialized experience for each person who participates. Some could read it and feel like there isn’t enough faith or God, others can read it and completely relate and feel connected because it’s mentioned a perfect amount and in the perfect places, and others can read it and find it overwhelming, unrealistic, or too prominent; I unfortunately fell into the latter category.

•The characters can be a bit frustrating to read. Jodie and Sam did not really make me want to root for them and the self-loathing, self-pity aspect of the healing was a bit too much for me. I understand it’s a common thing, especially in circumstances like theirs, but it was pretty annoying to read regardless. I also did not find their romance believable or something I really cared about, but that might be an unpopular opinion.

•This could be added under the faith bullet but, separately, the continuous use of prayer as a sort of protection or the “giving it to God and everything will be solved” mindsets really bothered me. Personally, I won’t go into why. Narratively, however, it takes away any kind of responsibility or motivation of the characters, which likely lead to my finding them not very dynamic or interesting. This also leads the reader to not find much actually suspenseful since we’re reminded over and over again that everything will work out, which is not a great thing in a suspense genre.

OVERALL
This book is written well, but it is too heavy in the Christian vein for me to have enjoyed my time. While it’s not for me, this book definitely does have an audience and if you’re looking for a good romantic suspense based in Christian faith, this one could be a consideration.

Until next time!

2.5⭐️s rounded down
**Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for access to this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I received it just before the pub date.**
Sergeant Jodie King is the lone survivor when her whole team is unexpectedly taken out by an IED blast. She takes early retirement, and deals with her grief and guilt by returning to the scene of the crime. Little does she know, the case is far from over, as Jodie is still a target
-genres: Suspense, Christian Fiction, Contemporary, Romance (romance is a very very side plot)
-Jodie and Sam are both survivors of (separate) on-the-job incidents that kill the other officers around them. Both sound incredibly traumatic, and like a lot to work through. I thought it was a huge plus that Sam is so open and promoting of therapy, as there can be a stigma around therapy in first responder types
-action packed opening that draws the reader in. The author was good at building suspense, and offering a believable cast of suspects (I’m assuming drawing from her experience as an irl officer)
-Jodie feeling anger/betrayal towards God for her teams’ deaths feels authentic; every other character randomly thinking of Bible verses, thinking in biblical analogies, and guilt tripping & preaching at Jodie doesn’t. It’s a bit gaslight-y; no one (other than Sam?) sits with her and listens to her, they’re all just uncomfortable (distraught, in the case of her old friends) that she isn’t the stable/devout person she was before - it leaves you wondering if they do actually care if she gets “better” (or that she takes the time to work thru her trauma), or just want her to check all the boxes to ensure she’s devout again? There is a point where Estella (a mother-like figure, who lost her husband in the same accident) has a heart-to-heart with Jodie; if she had been the only person to talk about faith, revenge/bitterness, letting go/moving forward, it would have been more impactful, and overall wouldn’t have been so bad/cringe
-I almost DNF’d, but kept going for the whodunnit. I think the author nailed the suspense/thriller part!
-The audiobook quality was very good. I think the narrator did a great job (especially switching between different character voices)!

** “If you choose to live in the past, regretting things you can’t change, it will destroy you. God is sovereign. Lamenting the past is denying his control, saying you know better than God. That’s not possible. God can fix what is ugly; you need to let him.” **

Once again Janice Cantore delivers a high-intensity thriller with “One Final Target,” a story that reminds us that “God is good, even when life isn’t.”

Still reeling from her team being killed in an explosion, Jodie King has left the Long Beach Police Department to attempt to move on and away from all that offers painful reminders. But when she’s drawn back into the fire, she must use her policing skills to figure out who seems to be after her.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Detective Sam Gresham is still recovering from his own nearly fatal experience when he’s pulled into Jodie’s case. As the two work together to solve the string of deadly events, they must both overcome their guilt over each of their own experiences and find healing and forgiveness … all while trying to stay alive.

Cantore always creates intense plots filled with twists and turns, heart-thumping action and just enough romance to curl your toes. She develops amazing characters that have real issues that readers can relate to and root for.

She also filled “One Final Target” with several great themes, like sometimes you have to just say “But God”; dealing with guilt and blame, especially survivor’s guilt; God can turn any evil into good; when you feel like there is a barrier between you and heaven; don’t stay stuck in the past or let bitterness take root; and the concept of Romans 8:28 (“It’s hard not to see God’s hand in things when everything goes well. You have to look harder whey they go sideways. Remember, God works all things out.”)

Fans of authors like Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason and Terri Blackstock will love “One Final Target,” which is due out Feb. 13.

Five stars out of five.

It’s a “meet cute” that’s not cute at all. It’s a situation fraught with peril. But it’s a meeting the hero and heroine will never forget. And while this possibly burgeoning romance is as important as the theme of faith in this story, it’s very much a mystery/thriller. One I found compelling and exciting.

Sam is finally back in the field after losing his partner and recovering from the injuries he sustained trying to save him. Jodie lost several team members in an explosion she barely escaped and completely blames herself for. Though she’s physically recovered, she’s struggling emotionally and has opted to take an early retirement.

These two make a good pair because they understand each other’s pain. Their training and experience give them an edge in the investigation he’s been assigned to... the same one she’s conducting on her own outside of the protocols of the job. Someone is trying to kill her, and evidence points to the person who killed her team. But all is not what it seems. For every clue that fits that profile, there’s another that doesn’t. When her safety is again compromised, Jodie and Sam realize a cop is probably involved.

The plot progresses (in clues and intensity) at a solid pace. The main characters (and even a few secondaries) are fully fleshed out and a few steal the show. Jodie has a satisfying arc, and the ending alludes to a happy future for most of the survivors. The climax left me shaking my head. (Not because of bad writing but because I didn’t want Jodie to have to weather that particular storm.) I saw the reveal coming and still didn’t want it to be what it was. But all loose ends were neatly, if a bit painfully, tied at the end.

This is a solid mystery/thriller with elements of romance and faith that I give an easy four stars.

Another fantastic romantic suspense by Janice Cantore that proves why she is one of my favorite authors!

Long Beach sergeant Jodie King takes her team to serve a warrant in San Bernardino when things go horribly wrong, and she loses her entire team in the raid. Losing her team leaves her with major guilt and grief causing her to leave the force. When she recovers, she makes her way back to the site of where it all happened and is almost killed when a sniper takes a shot at her. Detective Sam Gresham can save Jodie when he arrives seconds before the shot is fired and gets her to safety. Sam is returning to the force after recovering from his own accident and is thrown right into it as Jodie becomes the target and he must determine who is after her and why.

I have always loved the way Janice Cantore writes, her years in law enforcement gave her the expertise to write characters and plots that are believable and will make readers fly through the pages. I never find myself rolling my eyes at ridiculous plot points or characters in a Janice Cantore book, which is great. I would like to say that I figured out the twist early on, I thought I had but then when it was revealed I smiled at how it all turned out. The twist was great, and I loved how it all came together in the end, all the loose ends were tied up and I was satisfied with the story. I highly recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense and if you haven’t read a Janice Cantore book yet, you are missing out.

Janice Cantore knows how to ramp up the suspense! Her background as a police officer gives her unique insights into the workings of law enforcement that make her characters and their situations very real. I've read a number of her books and have several more on my Kindle, and each has ratcheted my pulse and nerves to screaming pitch.

Jodie King, sergeant in the Long Beach police department, lost her entire team to an IED explosion. As the lone survivor, her guilt drives her to quit the force. With no clear leads or suspects, her grief sends her back to the scene of the crime where she again finds herself in the crosshairs of a killer. Could it be that she, not her team, was the original target of the bomber?

Sam Gresham has finally been cleared for duty following the fiery crash that killed his partner. As a bomb expert in the military, Sam is assigned to work the IED case as his first case back. Happening on the scene of the original crime just as someone takes a shot at Jodie, Sam sacrifices his truck to protect her. As he gets to know Jodie, he realizes that her scars are every bit as deep as his, and her guilt every bit as strong. Can they work together to find and neutralize the threat before either of them loses their life? Because, Jodie's target has suddenly become Sam's as well, and neither one is safe until the other one is.

Jodie and Sam are fantastic characters. Both are broken and damaged but they are also strong and very smart, as they take the smallest clues, weave them together, and find redemption as they work to solve the case. I loved that, as they worked together, they discovered that love can grow, even amidst the rocks (bullets, bombs) that are being hurled their way.

Readers who enjoy a fast-paced, authentic sounding crime story will love One Final Target. I highly recommend this book - or really, any book Ms. Cantore has written. I've read both her Cold Case Justice and Line of Duty series, and both were excellent.

One Final Target
Janice Cantore
The setting is the San Bernardino Mountains. Sergeant Jodie King was there when her team of officers were killed, murdered, when an IED is detonated. Jodie has survivor’s guilt. She feels responsible for their death and grieve for their lives. She takes early retirement and begins her own search for the murderer.
Detective Sam Gresham has been assigned the IED case. He quickly realizes that Jodie was the intended victim. Sam suffered a loss and still bears the emotional scars. He hopes to help Jodie heal from the loss of her team.
This is a fast-paced thriller, Christian romance with suspense. I enjoyed the scripture references and prayers. It was easy to see why Jodie was resisting God; she was hurt, felt unworthy and she was angry with God. She felt as if her prayers were unheard. Sam was also hurting but was working through his pain. He was ready to fight for Jodie. The theme throughout this book is “God is good, even when life is not.” This book demonstrates bad things happen to good people. Being a Christian does not mean bad things are not going to happen to you. The key is how we handle the bad things in our lives. We grow through adversity. “Faith does not always take away the pain, but it does give you the ability to handle the pain.” “Be Still and know that I am God.”
It was fun watching Sam and Jodie’s relationship grow.

This was such a good book! I went into it with zero knowledge on the author or book because I have been thrifting books lately and giving them a go. This was a great read, and I would most definitely read another book by this author. I enjoyed Jodie and Sam and I loved that this book wasn’t super romance heavy but it was still there. It was a refreshing change from the other romantic suspenses I’ve read lately.

Essentially, in the beginning Jodie is grieving the loss of her partners due to an IED explosion while working for the local PD. She carries immense guilt and resigns from her position as sergeant, but someone is still after her. She meets another LEO named Sam when he saves her from an attack, and they connected immediately. Sam lost a partner in a car crash/fire and carries the guilt of being survivor. They work together to find the source of attacks against Jodie and ultimately grow closer together, but most importantly closer to God at the same time. They walked through a lot of similar things and find healing in the Lord as they finally let go of the weight they were carrying.

I did have a pretty good idea of who was after her but I still enjoyed the reveal. If you enjoy Christian romantic suspenses this is a great read with heavy faith content that was very solid.

I didn’t know what to rate this but I am gonna say 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute but I don’t think this one would make it to my favorites shelf.

Supercharged Suspense! Author and former police officer Janice Cantore lends her authentic storytelling once again to her latest, ONE FINAL TARGET.

Forget laundry, dishes, etc., etc., etc., folks. You won’t be able to put this book down! Non-stop action with twisty turns and enough red herrings that will keep the reader in suspense to the end.

THE STORY: Jodie’s team are all killed by an IED set in a house where the team was to issue a “routine” warrant—she was the sole survivor. Her team were not only co-workers, but her dear friends. Devastated, she resigns from the force and wonders why God allowed such tragedy in her life.

Sam has emotional and physical scars when he loses his partner and friend in a fiery crash caused by an inebriated driver. He is ready to get back to work and is assigned as a detective for the county sheriff’s department. Sam is on a similar path of trusting God again.

The two encounter each other when Jodie revisits the scene of the crime and Sam happens upon her. Their introductions are brief because a rain of bullets aimed at Jodie sends them for cover. So begins the action-packed plot that had me fully engaged in the story.

With themes of faith, romance, grief, and healing, ONE FINAL TARGET is the ticket to a fast paced winner! Highly recommended.

I received an ARC from the publisher for my honest review.
