She's a coffee shop regular with a latte addiction; he's the new to town barista with a massive secret.
Zara I’m a coffee loft regular. Give me my latte, clear out from my favorite seat and let me stare out the window at all the people chasing their dreams while I wait for future me to claim hers. It’s a routine, and nothing can disrupt it until Mr. Chaos barges in.
Devon I hear the cafe whispers; They call me Mr. Chaos, the new barista who’s turned the coffee loft upside down. Broken dishes, mixed-up orders, you name it. But the real chaos? The gorgeous regular who sits in my line of sight every day.I want to know her story, but I can’t ask. Because then she’d ask for mine. And if she finds out my secret, everything I’ve worked for will crumble. All I have to do is keep my distance. Wait, she’s coming my way for another refill. Don’t lock eyes with her. Tell your heart to stop pounding so loud. If she gives me that adorable smile again, I’m done. Look away - look away - too late. I’m toast. This is going to be a mess.
"Grounds for Romance" is a heartwarming, small town romantic comedy that proves sometimes love is best served with a side of chaos and a splash of serendipity. Grounds for Romance and is part of the Coffee Loft Fall Collection Series and may be read as a standalone.
Mel Walker is an award-winning rare bird, the male romance author. Specializing in heartfelt small-town romance, he enjoys telling compelling romances with all the feels. A native New Yorker and life-long frustrated NY Mets fan, he enjoys baseball, reading, bike rides, and writing outdoors where he absorbs the energy of the city.
I really enjoyed the romance between Devon and Zara. They were super cute. It was like watching two ppl with a crush fall for each other super fast.
What I did not care for what the way Zara made such a huge deal about Devon not telling her he was an actor. It felt really unnecessary to me. I kinda get being upset but it reality you guys have only known each other for a week so what he didn’t tell you he was an actor. He signed a contract and was not allowed to tell anybody. I understand if she was a little upset but her reaction felt too extreme to me. And for that to be the entire point of the story kinda fell flat for me.
Devon is an actor and is told to play a clumsy barista working at a real coffee shop, the franchise, The Coffee Loft. Issue is, he can’t tell anyone he’s an actor. He must play the part and make it seems real. That all seems fine until Zara, a struggling fashion designer who desperately needs a model for her clothing she’s to show off.. is at the coffee shop every day and she’s gorgeous and a distraction. But Devon is the right size and height for all the clothing she’s made..
These two are instantly attracted to eachother and become friends but…Devon hates playing this clumsy fool when that’s not who he really is but the money it too good to give up… so he keeps up the lie.
"I'm a sucker for creative latte art. You know, me being a designer and all. Can you do that? Will you give me your heart?"
Zara really likes the guy but feels like Devon is hiding bits of him. As they get closer, the lies aren’t going away. How will Zara take that their entire friendship was built on a lie?

I absolutely LOVED this story! Zara and Devon's story was so unique, SO funny, and the chemistry was oh so perfect! This was my first time reading a book by Mel and I am SO thankful I was able to read this! I loved it! I don't think I've ever laughed so much while reading. And then right after there are these sweet swoonworthy moments between Devon and Zara and it is oh so perfect!
Zara is a Coffee Loft regular, she has been working at this same job for far too long and is finally putting her name into an audition for her dream job. Unfortunately, her model for the job splits last minute, leaving her struggling. That is until in walks Devon, into the Coffee Loft. Devon will be the perfect model! The thing is, he isn't just handsome... he's thoughtful, kind, and he and Zara are clearly drawn to each other! Devon is only here at the Coffee Loft as a temporary gig. It's a short term assignment on his way to his dream job. If he plays his part right in this new role, he lands his dream job. Problem is.... playing the part, means hiding his true self from Zara. Both of them have everything riding on this week. She has her big audition, he has his new job. Knowing whats at stake, they try to ignore their chemistry to focus on their jobs... which is near impossible! But when this week is over, what will be the outcome? Will Zara land her dream Job? Will Devon fulfill his temporary role and solidify his dream role? Most of all what will Zara think when she finds out what all Devon is hiding?! And that he's been lying about who he truly is all along!
I've read 3 Coffee Loft books so far and all have been amazing. But this one brought the laughs AND the love, and I enjoyed every moment of it! I literally read it all in one sitting. I couldn't put it down!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. A positive review was not required. This review reflects my own opinion.
Oh, bright havens! These two were such an adorable hot mess together. Devon must stay in character and be somebody other than himself while trying to win the heart of the enchanting creature that’s already stolen his. There have been too many liars and disappointments in Zara’s past for her to take anything purely at face value, but the cutie new barista sure makes her second-guess all that caution. This book was a frothy concoction of angst, heart, and chemistry that just kept drawing me deeper and deeper. The whole way through, I could only worry about this pair; how it would inevitably blow up and how they could possibly put it all back together when it did. I loved Devon and Zara and I’m not at all ready to let go of them now that the book’s over. I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
Devon is sitting in the parking lot of Coffee Loft East in a frustrating Face-Time with his agent. He is on a ridiculous assignment and it is going to take everything he has because 1 - he doesn't drink coffee and most importantly 2 - he is an athlete and gymnast... therefore NOT CLUMSY.
He had auditioned for a bit-part as a barista in an upcoming movie only to find out it wasn't a bit-part, but a role that could be his big break in Hollywood. So he is now in a small quaint town in Southern California to work undercover for a week as a bumbling accident prone barista.
What could go wrong?
I so loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This is my favorite Mel Walker book yet! Devon and his antics in spilling drinks, breaking dishes and making the worst coffee concoctions ever will have you laughing and turning the pages... as you wait for the true disaster to hit.
If you love rom-coms this book has it all and the romance ♥. Mel Walker is one of the male authors who will knock your socks off with his romance novels! He is definitely a one-click author!
This was a cute, sweet, and wholesome romance novella. I loved getting to know Devon and Zara, the main couple. The story had a unique twist with Devon, an up-and-coming actor, going undercover as a "bumbling barista" at a coffee shop as part of his method acting for a big movie role that could launch his acting career. Sparks fly when he meets Zara, a fashion designer and regular at the coffee shop, but so do complications as Devon struggles to keep his true identity hidden.
Personally, I'm not a fan of characters keeping secrets and dragging out lies, so it frustrated me that Devon kept deceiving Zara instead of being honest about who he really was and what he was doing. Another downside for me was the use of insta-love and insta-lust. Those tropes don't resonate with me, so I found it hard to enjoy their whirlwind romance. It felt unrealistic that they fell so deeply for each other within just a couple of weeks. Some scenes and dialogue also felt a bit far-fetched. Additionally, there were moments where Zara's attraction to Devon came across as overly objectifying, which felt unnatural for her character, even though I know some women do sexualize men. It just left me feeling uncomfortable.
It wasn’t until I was about 60% through the novella that I really started to connect with the story and care about the characters and their journey. The first half felt slow and uneventful, and I found myself getting bored and almost giving up. Considering it's such a short book, I wish the more engaging parts had come sooner to hold my interest from the start.
Overall, this was a sweet and charming book, with no strong language or spicy scenes, which I appreciated. The ending, while a bit predictable, was satisfying, and I enjoyed not only the main couple's dynamic but also the relationship between Zara and her younger sister, Stacy.
It’s a lovely addition to this fall romance novella collection. If you enjoy friends-to-lovers romances with small-town charm and cozy autumn vibes, this short novella is definitely worth checking out.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Booksprout for the opportunity to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. These are my own thoughts and opinions.
Devon Alexander, who doesn’t even drink coffee, is sitting in the parking lot of Coffee Loft East while arguing on the phone with his Hollywood agent, Marvin Yonders. He is supposed to look for the owner, Mrs. Alice Whitehead, and get hired for one week as a barista “under cover” to prepare him for his role in a movie working with a top director. He also has to pretend to be clumsy, which he normally isn’t since he is the athletic type. This behavior, however, is necessary since he will be expected to be spilling drinks, breaking dishes, and creating chaos in his new role. If anyone except the owner finds out who he really is, the notorious lead actress Xenia will fire him immediately from the movie cast. And just to make sure he is off to a “good start” as the klutzy barista, Marvin has arranged that he has no other co-worker barista on duty with him that he might study and copy. He’s truly on his own!
Zara is a fashion designer who has made herself a coffee loft regular customer where she can work while feeding her coffee addiction. Then a handsome newly-hired barista captures her attention. How can he impress the gorgeous customer when he has to pretend to be a bumbling mess? His future career is at stake here. Is he willing to ignore his attraction to Zara for the sake of his own Hollywood future?
This storyline is delightful! The characters are amazing, and the author draws the reader in to care for how this all turns out. You won’t want to miss this one, and now the entire series is on my reading radar! Definitely a 5-Star experience!
Grounds for Romance by Mel Walker has a really cute and an unusual plot, a plot I have not come across in books I have read: actor Devon goes undercover at a Coffee Loft Shop to score a role as a bumbling Barista in a very desirable movie. One thing he had not thought of before when he meets designer Zara, who is a regular customer at the coffee shop and who he can’t stop thinking about. But his secret cannot come out.
This book was such a sweet and relaxing read. I enjoyed reading it from the very first. Devon is a great and charming guy, and he does his best to make things go wrong and somehow that is endearing. This is exactly what Zara thinks as well. They have a good chemistry and their building whirlwind relationship is rather sweet. As Zara is in a design competition, Devon is roped in to be a model, but then things go sour. Thankfully Devon stepped up and the scene that followed (you just have to read the book) is so good.
The writing style is flowing, the book is easy to read, and thanks to the dual POV, the plot and story-line I kept on reading. I was wondering while reading the book why Zara and all the regular costumers kept coming to the Coffee Shop (the coffee Devon made was not very good), but near the end there was a very satisfying and unexpected answer to this question.
Grounds for Romance is a great addition to a wonderful cozy romance series, with a good plot, two very likable characters, with humour, some drama and a great ending. I loved reading this book a lot. Recommended for those readers who want to read a lovely cozy romance novel.
Grounds for Romance is part of The Coffee Loft: Fall Collection. This is a multi-author series in which all books feature a Coffee Loft shop, but all can be enjoyed in any order or as standalones.
This was such a fun story! Right from their hilarious meet cute, the connection between Devon and Zara is obvious. They had so much amazing chemistry right from the start and while there were definitely some instalove vibes (which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea)--- I adored it! While the story takes place over a very short timeframe--- there's a whole lot going on in that time... including the career opportunity of a lifetime for them both. The problem is, she can't know that he's at her favorite coffee shop only playing the part of the bumbling barista. Their story was fun and flirty and unique and one that had me smiling from start to finish. This was the first book that I had ever had the chance to experience from Mel Walker, but certainly will not be the last!
Grounds for Romance is a closed-door romance with kisses only and minimal language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Lattes, lies, and love... oh my! This new release has it all! What is a fake barista to do when he meets the love of his life and has to stay in character? The Coffee Loft sets the scene for Devon to work on his method acting, and some hilarious moments ensue as he becomes the "bumbling barista!"
He and regular, Zara, can't help all the sizzling looks exchanged across the store (or the amount of Dr. Pepper consumed). My, my... They nearly set the place on 🔥 with their chemistry.
They agree to wait a week before going all in, but secrets can't stay hidden forever. My heart nearly broke it as many pieces as the dishes the "bumbling barista" knocked to the floor at times late in the story.
But hey, this is the Coffee Loft, where stories get as beautiful of a finish as some gorgeous latte art. I love the satisfying ending (but I wouldn't have been mad about a bonus epilogue!). 😉
Grounds for Romance is Book #8 in the multi-author Coffee Loft series.
I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.
#FriendsToLovers #SecretIdentity Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this standalone ends with a HEA. I met the author earlier this year at Charm City Romanticon and I finally had a chance to read one of his books. It makes me happy to read from diverse authors, and with a BIPOC male romance author, this book made me very happy. It was a romantic feast full of longing glances, sweet brushing touches, and devastating kisses. Seriously, where is Hallmark? This deserves its movie already. Zara (28) is a fashion designer who is frustrated with her day job but still dreaming. Devon (27) is a struggling actor with a shot at the part to make his dreams come true. I appreciated Zara’s fierce nature and the joy that radiated from her character. Even when she was frustrated or angry, I knew she was a good person. Devon struggles with his role, and with not being completely transparent with Zara. I loved his desire to pursue his dreams and his recognition that his omissions left Zara open to hurt. He does bring a grand gesture to the table to win back a chance at the girl. Zara holds the cards, and their HEA delivers all the swoon. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Zara and Devon meet as they're walking into the Crestline, California Coffee Loft, and their mutual interest is instant. They get to know one another better over the coming days as Zara spends time working at one of the tables, and Devon bumbles his way through his first days as a barista. Turns out that both Zara and Devon are dreamers, but will they trust each other with their dreams, and will those dreams allow them to continue this blossoming romance?
The characters Zara and Devon are relatable as they're two people working so hard to be seen. That's what they find with each other – the person who sees them and calls out the best in them because they already see overwhelming success for the other. Throughout this storyline, there are swoon worthy descriptions of each of them when they first meet, their first kiss, and the build up of their attraction and relationship. And the HEA is so sweet.

"Three seconds changed everything." I loved this quote from the book. You will have to read it to understand it. It summed everything about this book in four words. Superb comes to mind when I think of how to describe this book. Everything about this book was perfect from start to finish. The plot and the characters were brilliant and entertaining.
Who knew a bumbling barista and a rookie fashion designer would hit it off? Zara and Devon were a match made in heaven. However, Devon's deep secret could destroy everything.
I laughed so hard at Devon's clumsiness on display for all to see at The Coffee Loft. You definitely did not want a coffee concoction that he had so expertly incorrectly prepared. You never knew what you would be getting. Taste buds beware.
Their sparkling chemistry was instantaneous, but it will be messy before all is said and done. You do not want to miss this installment of The Coffee Loft.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Grounds for Romance is the story of Zara and Devon. Zara is a designer, looking for her big break and hoping to get it with her designs for a local basketball team. Devon is an actor whose been tasked with going undercover at a coffee shop - as an inept barista. Their meet-cute takes place on the street, where he karate kicks her mascot's head as it comes flying at him!
They're immediately attracted to each other and become flirty friends - even as he hides his dance skills/gracefulness under the facade of the tripping, dropping, oopsy barista. He does such a skillful job of it that she's positive that he's who he appears to be; and, as they grow closer, it becomes clear that their feelings for one another run deep and true.
I won't say anything else about the storyline, but I will say that I really enjoyed this novel; both characters are fleshed out well, and their individual storylines gel nicely in the end. Definitely one to read!.

A cute Strangers to Lovers story involving Devon and Zara.
To bag the acting gig of his lifetime , Devon needs to successfully complete a week assignment at a cafe as a barista. He has never done this before and doesn’t think he can successfully complete it until he meets Zara the cafe regular.
Zara is a struggle fashion designer ,who has an opportunity to pitch to a local volleyball team . She has designed new uniforms and is looking for a replacement model to go with her to do the pitch ,now that her best friend micheal turns her down . Devon is the perfect replacement after he accidentally hit and damages the head of the pitch mascot.
Their attraction grows daily , will Devon be honest and tell her the truth that he is an actor that is there on assignment? Will Zara trust him after his confession and embark on a relationship with him?
Is a sweet meet cute, small town romance with no cliffhanger. Some of the lines I really like ---- Remember it’s not the outcome but the journey. Be true to your heart. ---- “Would you rather I stood in front of your face and lied? That’s not the type of person who has your best intentions at heart.” ---- Don’t fall for the words he says. Make note of what he doesn’t say. That’s where the truth lies. ----- I need to stop counting on other people to chase my dream. ---- If your life were a movie, what would the next scene look like?” ---- Don’t let life happen to you. Take control and write your own story.” ---- Will Devon get the part? Will Zara get the contract? These and other questions will all be answered. I loved Zara and Devon's story and I'm sure you will too. I loved everyone of her books that I've read and can't wait to read her next book.
This was my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see a romance book from the male point of view. The characters were different and interesting. Zara is the sweet clothing designer with a little bit of sass and Devon is the new barista with a secret. They have instant chemistry and their story unfolds in a fun way, with great connections. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I adored all of the foam art they talked about and that was fascinating for me.
"...What I'm capable of. I want to show her everything, but mostly, I want to share the real me."
"He's here. He's here for me. He's giving me what he believes I need from him."

This was the first book I read by Mel Walker and I look forward to reading more of his books. This was a cute story. I loved Devon's character. He starts working at The Coffee Loft as a barista temporarily for an upcoming gig he’s working on. He was so sweet and had me swooning from all his sweetness. Zara is a Coffee Loft regular because she can work from anywhere and chooses to work from the coffee shop. These two have instant chemistry and I loved it. I laughed, swooned and smiled through this book. I felt like the story and the characters were well written and enjoyable. This is definitely a must read and I highly recommend it.
Thank you Mel Waker for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.
This is yet another easy to read addition to the fall Coffee Loft series. Devon is undercover as a barista studying for a part in an up and coming film. He's to learn the ropes to successfully take the role, without anyone finding out he's not a real employee. Zara works remotely, but spends most of her time ogling Devon while working on her computer at one of the booths. The chemistry is quite instant between the two, but with plenty of obstacles put in their way. Can the actor pull off his biggest challenge and still win the role and the girl. Or will he crash and burn. This is one of those stories you'll read in one sitting and enjoy the characters. Another win fir this series ❤️☕️📖❤️.

This closed door romcom was so sweet, a little salty, with a hint of spice. Do you enjoy a good love at first sight hidden identity story? This one will be a treat for you! Devon is auditioning for his dream role. It could make or break his career in Hollywood. The catch? He can’t tell anyone that he’s doing a week of method acting as a bumbling barista at the Coffee Loft. Before he even begins his work, he meets local beauty and regular Zara who uses the Coffee Loft’s WiFi for work. Sparks fly instantly. Follow along as these two fall in love with each other. Sparks will fly as will some coffee mugs. This book was a sweet treat. A perfect weekend read. It left me smiling with a happy heart for these two fully relatable and lovable characters.
This was a 4.5🌟 read This insta love romance was a very cute sweet read. Devon and Zara were perfect together and had an instant attraction. Problem was though Devon was only playing a part to try and be cast in a movie. Can he stay undercover without losing the girl of his dreams??? Both main characters have big dreams and will do what they have to to try and achieve them. But Zara feels betrayed when she realises Devon may not be the man she thought she fell in love with. This book made me feel like I was on the ride with them. Putting myself in both their shoes to think how I would react in that situation. This was well written and once you get into the story it takes you along for the ride.
I was given a complimentary copy but voluntarily chose to review
Zara & Devon Devon (27) a struggling actor, needing to learn how to be a barista for his next role. And this role could be the role the sets off his career. Zara (28) is a graphic designer that works remotely so she plants herself at the cafe all day. And now she is having trouble concentrating because of the newest barista. This is a rom/com romance both of the character are chasing their dreams and even if they hurt one another they will discover the meaning of ‘having someone in your corner no matter what,’ really means. The cutesy connection they have and the lies and betrayal will hurt but in the end we have a funny and cute HEA.
