Agent Arin: A Man Alone

Rate this book
It’s hard to be a Justice Keeper when your worst enemy is your own checkered past.

Haunted by the years he spent working for the Overseers, Arin Corali yearns for redemption. But opportunities to prove himself are rare; as a newly-minted Keeper, most of his assignments are tame.

That will all change, however, when trouble stirs on the abandoned world of Abraxis. With his crimes exposed to the public, Arin must travel to the ancient stronghold of the Overseers, a world of horrors where human settlements are few and scattered across the vast desert. He must navigate through a complex web of criminal syndicates, searching for a power that can usurp control of starships and turn them against their own crews.

Arin’s investigation eventually brings him to the subterranean lair of his former masters. And there, he will confront a darkness unlike any he has ever faced before.

I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario where I attended Saltfleet High School and McMaster University. I've spent most of my life fighting for the little guy in one form or another, advocating for the poor, for environmental sustainability, for minority rights.

Throughout my twenties, I wrote about five novels and threw them all out because they weren't very good. But I improved and honed my skills with each new manuscript. About two years ago, I had an offer from a traditional publishing house, but I chose to go indie instead. Writing is my passion; if I could dedicate myself to one thing, it would be bringing the ideas in my head to life.

Sci-Fi ARC with thanks to @keeperssaga

The genre is very new to me where books are concerned but I thought I'd give it a go.

Really enjoyed it and the story was fast paced with a lot of action. It didn't matter that I hadn't read anything similar before as there was enough detailed description for me to understand everything completely.

I liked the slight twist in Lin's role within the book and Arin/Pol's character development was good. I liked how the story was constantly moving forward and Arins history was important but he was actively moving on to make amends.

I normally watch sci-fi movies and I can see how this would translate well over to the screen. I think further adventures could look at Arins adventures with his colleagues as they hold him in high regard despite his past and I think it'd be good to explore their dynamics a little more 😊

The story is set in a great universe with interesting beings.
If you are starting your trip in the science fiction genre, it could be a book to start with. It's very easy reading. Once you had a very busy day at work and you want to unplung, it's a go to.
It's like watching a film.

Although, it's predictable in various moments of the story and maybe too describe for the combat scenes (that's only my feeling, it could suit you. That's fine!), the story stays well brought up with a few funny moments.

Sci-fi thrillers are quickly becoming a genre I enjoy. They’re giving me the same captivating vibes I love in movies. There’s nothing like a complex character navigating his past in an immersive world that feels like a captivating story, almost pulling you into the story itself.

The author’s descriptions are so vivid and precise that I can easily picture everything. The world-building is detailed and expansive, and I would love to see this universe brought to life in a film adaptation. Although this book is part of a larger universe explored in other works, I didn’t feel lost reading it. However, it did take me some time to fully invest in the story — the beginning didn’t immediately hook me, but at some point, I found myself eagerly turning the pages.

That said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth in the characters and setting. While the descriptions were there, I craved more backstory, details that could have rounded out the world. The vast universe and numerous side characters intrigued me, I wanted to know more, especially since the author crafted a richly detailed story, and characters that seems to have their own storyline. The appendix at the end, filled with information on the world, characters, technology, and more, offered some insights and left me eager to keep exploring this universe.

Nonetheless, the protagonist’s journey was particularly compelling. Constantly moving forward while struggling to reconcile with his past, facing an internal battle, being alone in a world that kept pointing the wrongs, but still in a way finding himself part of a team along the way. I was eager to read about his journey, and and even though I didn’t totally connect with him, I was still invested in his character and growth.

Thank you to the author for giving me this e-copy 🪐✨

3.75 ARC Experience | This sci-fi adventure gave me feels Agent Carter, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Altered Carbon, and Star Wars Rogue One, creating a fast-paced and engaging narrative that I absolutely loved. The story captivated me, particularly with its fascinating elements such as the Overseers, ancient masters, justice keepers, Nassai, rogue robots, and well the whole sci-fi bunch! Haha. I appreciate that the author allows readers to enjoy this book as a standalone, which provides a satisfying experience without requiring prior knowledge of the series. However, it also left me wanting more in a positive way!

Despite its standalone nature, there are certain details and characters that felt underdeveloped. Some characters appear to be of great significance, and understanding their backstories would have added considerable depth to the narrative because I found myself wanting to know them so much. Moreover, the presence of some spoilers could potentially impact the experience for those planning to read the entire series. But even with these aspects, I found myself completely immersed in the story.

Also, the concept of Spatial Awareness and bonding a Nassai was intriguing, but it would have benefited from further elaboration. I’m assuming the explanations are throughout the series though!

Overall, while this book excels in providing a thrilling and immersive experience, it could be enhanced by more thorough development of certain elements. Nevertheless, it stands out as an engaging read that leaves a pretty good impression, and I might really want to dive deeper into this universe. This book has sparked a genuine love for the series in me, and I highly recommend it to fellow sci-fi enthusiasts! Big thanks for this ARC opportunity. Keep on writing. Cheers!

I received a free ebook copy of this from Henry Roi PR, for my non-biased review of this story. I want to start by saying this book has potential. The opening prologue was so entertaining and had me hooked. The prologue felt a lot like watching an episode of the tv show firefly. I wanted to see what happened.. why did a random ship attack and then flee the scene? The first chapter was well written and had action. I wanted to learn more about this ship and the stolen crystals.. what mades the crystals special? I wanted to explore space with Agent Arin. Unfortunately chapter 5 is where the story started falling apart for me. There is some heavy editing that needs to be done for the story to flow in a way that is easy for the reader to read. There are missing quotation marks and entire blocks of dialogue that is difficult to read and understand. I ultimately decided to not finish this book around chapter seven. I am so sorry. I truly wanted to read agent Arins story but I could not get into it because of the dialogue. This story seems to switch from third person point of view to first person point of view and that was difficult to follow. We hear a lot of agent Arins inner dialogue which makes if feel like first person POV. But then the book narrates what agent Arin is doing. I struggle to keep up with the POV switching. I truly hate not finishing a book and I hate to give a book two stars because I feel like this story has so much potential. It just needs a few more rounds of editing.

R.S. Penney's book Agent Arin: A Man Alone is part of his Epic Literary Universe Series.

A Man Alone focuses on a man that was forced to work for a group of aliens he despised, though being "forced to" is relative on how one defines the words. Years later, after he's away from his past and with a new crew, the leading male is still being haunted by the things he had to do. Including, having to go back to where his nightmares began.

A Man Alone is a fast-paced story, with Jason Bourne type tendencies, except for the part where the main character forgot his past. Mr. Penny does a great job at bringing the characters to life; letting the readers get close to the development of each character and making them feel as if they are part of the story. For a reader that is new to the Epic Literary Universe series, it is highly recommended to begin the series at book one (Jack and Anna: Back to Winnipeg) and read each book in order to get the back stories, but if readers prefer to read to A Man Alone as a standalone, Mr. Penny gives enough details that the readers are able to get the jist of what happened before the story picks up as they read along, and giving A Man Alone a try would most definitely be an excellent use of their time.

This was another enjoyable addition to the Keeper Saga series. As a Justice Keeper Arin is tasked with protecting humanity, but with his checkered past he has only been given tame assignments. When an opportunity arises to investigate a potential dangerous situation Arin is forced to confront his past on Abraxis, a planet abandoned by the Overseers.

I had a hard time getting into the story, but once I did, I didn’t want to put it down. Penney has done an excellent job building a complex universe with enjoyable characters. The symbiotic relationship between humanity and the Nassai is fascinating and I really enjoyed the appendix at the end that had a more in depth look at this universe.

I was given this book to review and I’m just sorry it took so long to read it!

Every book I get to read by R.S. Penney is a book I thoroughly enjoy! The way he’s able to encapsulate the reader into his world is truly something of talent. I enjoyed reading Agent Arin because as the reader, we get enough lore to understand the book, but don’t need to read a long series to get to Agent Arin. As someone who typically strays from this genre, I really enjoyed this book!
