Modian Consensus: The Rediscovery of Bharat

Rate this book
Modian Consensus: The Rediscovery of Bharat maps the Indian political trajectory of the last 150 years. It locates various periods of consensus that developed in Bharat from time to time and drove the policy, planning and politics of the day. Four of these consensus phases of the past have been identified as Civilisational Consensus, Gandhian Consensus, Nehruvian Consensus and Secular Consensus. The fifth and ongoing phase, the book argues, is Modian Consensus. The book examines how the politics of the day finds itself willy-nilly amidst a consensus around the politics of Narendra Modi. In the current phase, parties and politicians diametrically opposed to Modis ideas are compelled to follow the line of policies and programmes set by him. The impact of this consensus can be observed far beyond the domain of politics as it stands on the three postulates of cultural rootedness, assertive nationalism and welfare for all. The book explores various manifestations of Modian Consensus, including the challenges it faces and what it augurs for the future of Indian politics.

⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️½/5
When we discuss Indian politics, we need to take into account an array of events, beginning with the founding of the Indian National Congress. Modian Consensus traces the journey of the same in the last 150 years, describing how the Indian political atmosphere has evolved into something completely unexpected but not surprising.
The author examined the advent of the various cosensus phases the nation has went through, them being Civilizational, Gandhian, Nehruvian, and Secular phases with the ongoing Modian Consensus as the centrepiece of the book. Singh dove deep into details of the Nehruvian and Secular phases, discussing the government's shortcomings and what it costed the nation. He traced the events of the infamous Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, her assassination, and the establishment of the National Advisory Council, among other significant events.
As the name suggests, Singh put special emphasis on India after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, and to set the stage for the same, described in great detail the rise of Narendra Modi in the Indian political atmosphere. He further discussed Modi's leadership skills and how in his tenures, a lot of changes have happened in the nation for good. The way Narendra Modi has changed the meanings of nationalism and become the face of 'Hindu' nationalism is nothing short of revolutionary.
The writing is in great detail and kept me hooked with the book. The book has been excellently edited and compiled as each chapter ended with a clear conclusion and made the process of absorbing whatever I had read rather convenient for me. The research that went into this book was certainly back breaking as in the Notes section of the book, the author clearly mentioned the date of when he accessed a certain resource. The longest gap I noticed between two resource citations in the same page was of three years, which is no small thing.
Although, some things in the book did not exactly sit right with me. The book is an analysis of the political environment of the nation, and it meant the author was praising the execution and operation of BJP in various pressing issues, especially religion and nationalism; but I felt that the author did not exactly call the ruling party out for some of the problematic decisions by them, maybe because it was not the right place to do so.
In conclusion, Modian Consensus is one of the most interesting reads before the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, where the a looming question over the steadfast belief in the Modian consensus is in question.
