Rate this book
Claire Branson just moved across state lines into Salem, Virginia, and she wants her life to go right for once, please and thank you. Having freshly escaped from a criminal past and the ex-boyfriend associated with it, she needs routine. Monotony. A happiness that could feel…simple.

Luke Turner is simple—sexy, sarcastically sweet, and, above all, radiating innocence. He could be her simplicity, there’s no doubt about that. But with Claire’s past festering under the gauze of her quick runaway, could he keep his innocence?

And, more importantly, will they get out of everything alive?

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the small town aspect and the found family that we get in this book.

I love the the way the drama wasn't dragged out and it was resolved very well. I think the characters are lovable for sure and I definitely want to read more from this author!

Escape. It was always a word that daunted me, but I supposed that was because it’s more of a relative term than anything.

I’ve been reading so much fantasy lately that it was nice to switch it up a bit with a modern day romance! I flew through it, too. A lovely read for a sunny day!

Thinly Veiled follows Claire and Zoey when they leave their hometown for a fresh start in Salem, Virginia. The lucky ladies manage to find jobs almost immediately and quickly fall in with the locals: Luke, the barman and Liam, the neighbour. And then James later on, Luke’s brother.

From the get go, it’s clear that Claire wants to forget her past with her ex, Colton, and the secrets she’s keeping about her family situation, and the things she had to do to get out. So she is firmly in the past? What’s that? mode upon arrival in Salem and no matter how many questions Luke asks as they get to know each other, she remains pretty tight lipped. And Zoey, as her best friend, is only too happy to help her do so. (Random aside: It’s actually funny, now that I think about upon finishing the book, how that’s the first thing Claire notes about Liam – not talking about his past – yet she does the same thing! And then tells Zoey that it’s why she has some doubts about him. And whilst she doesn’t trust him, in retrospect he totally had the the right to feel the same way.)

I must say, I really like how the relationships developed between the four (later five). I do think Luke was a little too harsh on Liam, though. Like, from the way he was acting, I totally thought Liam was going to end up being WAY WORSE, but he ended up being one of my favourite characters and he really did nothing wrong. Like, not once. (Liam and Zoey were darn right heroes, honestly.) It honestly took me by surprise when he ended up being so cool? Luke’s reaction to Liam’s mere presence at the start made it seem like he was going to be a nightmare, lmao. So, that definitely took me by surprise. Diversionary tactics!

I really liked James when he came along, too. He was a fun character and I wanted to see more of him and Luke, and him and Zoey. (James and Zoey follow up book, yes yes?)

Claire and Luke’s relationship was very cute from the onset. Their chemistry was great and their romance was very believable. I really liked where the story ended up, too. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say that I liked how everyone was just really determined to have everyone else’s back and actually listened to each other.

Definitely gonna keep an eye out for more books from Modiste!

Thank you to the author for sending me a paperback edition to review!

Thinly Veiled is a funny, romantic romp with a bit of crime interwoven into the story as a group of new friends try to figure out a plan to stop a blackmail scheme, while a blossoming romance prevents someone from admitting to a shady past as they fall in love.

Claire Branson has moved to Salem, Viginia in hopes of putting her past life to rest. Growing up was a difficult process for her made worse by a mother she now realizes she never really knew. Yes, her past is a bit sketchy, but with the help of her best friend Zoey, who in some ways is her protector and guardian angel, she hopes to start a new chapter in her life and quite frankly to stay away from men.

Until…she meets a bartender, Luke Turner. When he finds out Claire is looking for a job, he hires her as a bartender. And that’s when the crazy ride begins. She comfortably flirts with him thinking he could never be interested, but as fate would have it, she’s wrong. Now, she must decide what to tell her new “friend” about her past bad habits. She is torn because she feels this could be something real.

But unfortunately, all good things must have a glitch to them and someone from Claire’s past has found her and has threatened to expose her if she does not help him get out of a sticky jam. She realizes she has no choice but to help him, so she comes clean to Luke, the only person who has really made her feel safe. And he’s not happy.

But her new quirky friends ban together and decide on a plan to help Claire so she won’t end up doing jail time, but when things begin to go terribly wrong, Claire finds jail is the least of her problems, she may just lose her life!

Thinly Veiled is filled with humor, sex, terrific characters and an exciting plot.

Thank you #ElizaModiste #ThinlyVeiled for sending me your book.

It’s been a crazy few weeks but here I am, finally able to write a review - I know you’re all very excited. Me too! Because this book is so cool.

1. Cute lil, seemingly, small-town-I’m-running-from-my-bad-decisions-romance drop kicks you into a full blown heist (kinda)

2. The slutty best friend trope done right. Is that even possible? 👀

3. Plot twist lovers - like hello ACOTAR whiplash

4. Found family of 🤌🏼 🤌🏼🤌🏼 proportions

5. Ahh yes and the third act breakup - wouldn’t be a contemporary romance without it, now would it?

Here is my one and only complaint/critique/grievance/whining… all of the chapters are really long and my ADHD was revolting. In all sincerity though, I think some of the scenes could be trimmed and be just as effective while allowing the plot and pace to pick up a smidge.

Refreshing take on romance staple

✿ Thank you to the author for
the gifted eARC of this book. All opinions are my own! ✿

“You’re messy—and I don’t want you to be sorry for it. You just are. You’re stubborn, flighty when it comes to conflict, and you have a past that I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand but…all of that makes me want you more.”

💌⁀➷

So I first read an arc of book 2 then received a copy from the author for book 1. I did enjoy that (Zoey's story and writing) more but main character wise I prefer book 1's mmc Luke and fmc Claire. Even while reading Zoey's story I loved Claire,Luke and their relationship.

It made me want to read about them and now that I have, I can say for sure that Lukey boy is my fav but his brother James for sure takes the W and I'm so eager and excited to see him get his own full story + happy ending in book 3 coz he deserves it. Eliza, what are you planning for him? 👀

The found family trope ate hard and I wanna be part of a ride or die group just like this coz it was goals fr! Tho they do keep getting into really dangerous situations and finding ways to conquer + humor it 😂 glad to see it carried over onto book 2,Veiled In Brick (review posted)

Luke is an amazing book bf he is protective, understanding, supportive, funny, sweet, caring & nonjudgemental. He won my heart & he let Claire handle her shit the way she wanted to + stood by her side always ❤️ Liam is a really great friend too btw so props to him!

I do love all of these chaotic and wholesome og characters from Zoey/Liam to Luke/Claire and my guy James with his wit + general personality. Eliza created these wonderful characters whose lives are all dramatically and sweetly interlinked.

There were certain things that could have been explained a bit more imo coz I was kinda lost at one part when it all went down and the chaos increased exponentially but it wasn't too bad.

Overall it was funny, spicy, sweet & suspenseful. They combined to create a story that was enjoyable to read.

Summary 💋
Claire and her friend Zoey, pick up and move to escape her past. They settle in and look for jobs. Which is where Luke comes in, Claire agrees to work as bartender along side Luke.
They start hitting it off, and things get spicy between them. However, when a visit home leads to her to be blackmailed, she must face and her past, and fight it.

Thoughts 💘
I really did enjoy this book.

For me, it felt like a slow burn, but was very speedy when things happens.
But honestly when they did they were so cute. I absolutely loved Luke personality. Some of the comments he made, made me giggle.

This book, had quite a lot of spice, not not much but enough, and I forgot to note them 🤦🏽‍♀️

This was also heartbreaking, her leaving Luke. To protect him, and everyone else. For him to follow her anyway, but he couldn’t let her go, because he loved her. It was so cute.

Even her friendship with zoey I loved Zoey even she followed to help, even though Claire wanted to protect her. It just showed how strong their relationship was.

Coming the end, I think I held my breath till the end, I was worried but I’m so glad it ended the way it should have, the guy deserved it. And she was finally free and didn’t have to look over her back anymore.

It was filled with laughter, fun, love, heartbreak, but honestly I loved it.

Other:
I fell in love with Zoey and Liam as well was so glad to have the next book as well.

A special thank you to Netgalley and Eliza Modiste for access to this wonderful book!

Claire tries to start a new life in Virginia after leaving behind her criminal ways. There she meets Luke, the sexy new bartender who offers her a job and becomes a large part of her life. Once she feels like she has it all; peace, love and friendship; her life goes spiraling when her past catches up to her.

Claire's sassy personality along with her smart mouthed best friend Zoey made this a hilarious read. Add in Luke's stubborn personality and this story was a whirlwind. This is a must read if you're looking for a feel good comedy!

This was such a suspense filled romance, I loved it so much! I felt for Claire as she tries to establish a new life for herself, and Luke who wants to just have his simple, sweet life gets into Claire’s world of drama. I loved Claire realizing her own strength and knowing she’s worthy of goodness and love in a life she can be proud of. And she & Luke have such a sweet relationship built on such sweet friendship. The suspense and intrigue and drama was off the charts (for me) in this book! I’m not used to romance with such high stakes drama but I loved it & was happy with the ending.
Thank you for the ARC!!!!

Thank you to Love Notes PR, and the author, for providing me with all three books in the series for review and promotion.

This book was a solid start to the series. I think it was a great set-up and I started to care deeply about the characters and was invested in their relationships.

3 stars is a completely 'good' rating for me, it just didn't absolutely rock my world. I was very excited to continue the series and moved on to book two very quickly!

She ran away from her past.

I became so engrossed in this story that I forgot to keep track of time. The friendship between the two girls is so real. They get jobs, they meet people, life is good. Then the plot thickens with the bad ex from the past. What damage will he do to the fragile relationships just beginning to blossom.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

An easy, small down read with laugh out loud comedy and angst that keeps the story going, this was like a romantic Scooby Doo (minus the dog!).

Maybe it’s for this reason I struggled to find the angst believable? I mean, I know it’s a fictional story but I found them too funny and entertaining to be able to sort a crime out and get out alive - almost without resolution with regard to Colton? I know there’s a threat made but… I don’t know I don’t feel like it was closed off enough crime-wise. And I wanted reassurance in the form of the epilogue that Luke and Claire would be together. Is this the case of a Happy For Now ending???

The time frame confused me a little it didn’t feel long, then suddenly it had been six months since the move.

Either way, an easy very spicy read with some good laughs in it!

A fast paced read. Claire runs to Virginia to escape her past. She isn't expecting to meet Luke and then her last catches up with her. Some great side characters, particularly Zoey.
Looking forward to more books from this author.

“You left me in Virginia without saying goodbye and shredded my heart to pieces when you did—and I still f*cking love you.”

In her debut novel, Thinly Veiled, Eliza Modiste drives home the message that you can run but you can’t hide. (From your past, that is.) The blend of rom-com and suspense is always so much fun to read because it can simultaneously keep you laughing and on the edge of your seat. Modiste checks off both of those boxes. I was definitely hooked on the storyline, interested to know just how crazy things were going to get as main character Claire’s past unraveled. Told entirely from Claire’s point of view, you get to experience her inner turmoil with what making a new name for herself entails. At the same time, you get to meet some secondary characters that, quite frankly, make the book what it is.

You are instantly drawn in when you find out that Claire is fleeing her hometown and her no-good ex alongside her best friend, Zoey. From there, you get to meet two key characters who you will grow you love—Luke the bartender and Liam the neighbor. Everyone has such distinctly different personalities and, yet, their friendship (for the most part) comes easily. What it boils down to is that coming to Salem, Virginia was Claire’s best decision in years… By far. She lucked out by her near-random choice of city becoming the place that feels like home.

While you may not agree with all of Claire’s actions in life, she’s the type of character that you root for. You want her to get the man, you want her to stick it to the man, and you want her to experience genuine peace for the first time in her life. Sure, this book is anything but peaceful considering there’s a constant backdrop of criminal mischief, but there’s still hope! And with all of Claire’s friends at her side when the going gets tougher than expected, that notion of hope is looking brighter and brighter.

I had a good time with the banter in Thinly Veiled. There were some moments where I caught myself smiling at the humor, which is always a big deal for me. I want to be amused when I’m promised a rom-com! That said, I felt like there could’ve been some tweaking to the language across the board. There was a significant amount of filler words used like “um,” “er,” and “ah” that, for me, took away from what was being said at times.

I also found myself wishing that we could’ve seen more of Claire’s relationship development with Luke initially. There is a jump between when they first start hanging out, so you won’t get the full extent of their evolving dynamic. The same ultimately goes for her friendship with Liam. Still, you do get to know the characters and see how far their friendship has come. Things really ramp up around the halfway mark, so prepare yourself for how everyone responds to the central conflict in support of Claire.

If you are someone who doesn’t shy away from spice, raunchy language, or a little bit of blood, make way for Thinly Veiled. A story about a girl who wasn’t looking for love but found it in more ways than one, it’s especially great for those times when you’re looking for a romance that isn’t too light or too dark.

Will I be reading more from Modiste in the future? Yes. Did I already devour the second book before I even finished writing this review? Also yes. And when the next book comes out, ya girl will be ready.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Okay, first of all - I 🤍’ED THIS BOOK! 🥹🙈✨

Before the release of the 3rd book in this series “Shattered Veil”, I wanted to catch up on the other 2 to get a feel of the characters & the underlying dynamics. I am happy to say that I did just that (& best of all - enjoyed it immensely ☺️👏🏻).

So, 1st thoughts before reading the book & browsing a little bit to gather information:
🤍 “Oh, a trilogy about people coming together? This sounds like the one from Lucy Score. BUT I 🤍 LUCY SCORE, THIS IS GREAT! 🤩”
🤍 “All the books have “Veil” in it. BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?? & WHY CAN’T I FIND THE EXPLANATION ANYWHERE?? 😫 I need to start reading ASAP to find out!”

Once I started reading, I honestly thought that it would go as follows: girl moving away from her sh*tty ex-boyfriend, falling in love with a toxic guy, toxic guy falling in love with the girl eventually, couple living happily ever after. THE END. BYE.

BUT NO. 🤯 Eliza Modiste toooootally surprised me with Luke being thé actual nice guy. It’s so refreshing to read that girls ARE actually able to fall for the nice guy the 1st time (after Liam was “out of the picture” - romantically speaking). It shows a sense of women empowerment (a much-debated topic these days, I would say 🫶🏻👏🏻😉) & I feel we need more books to spread this message!

Everything in this story felt so real, as if I was there myself. Especially the characters & their specific traits were amazingly put together. I found myself laughing every time (read - grunting with laughter, oink oink 🐽) when Zoey made one of her smutty comments again 🤣😭. That girl has no shame, & I 🤍 it! She’s my favorite character by far!

I’m so happy that, Claire & Luke eventually ended up together, going back to Virginia. It was so heartwarming to end the book with a new year’s celebration where everyone’s enjoying each other’s company.

I also have to point out that this was such a smooth read 😍! It read effortlessly (even though I felt the vocabulary was much more advanced compared to other, similar books).

I would really recommend this one to everyone, an enjoyable, captivating read which will make you forget the passing of time. 🫶🏻✨

I read this entire book in a few hours one night, so it definitely keeps your interest. The plot is a little far-fetched but exciting. The two main characters were actually less interesting to me than the supporting characters, so I'm curious to see this series continue. If you like a slow burn, this might not be for you. The main characters don't immediately get together, but there is a time jump so you miss a bit of their relationship.
I still don't really understand the relevance of the title 😂
Also, friends calling each other "slut" and "whore" is so 2008.

Whew!!! Whew! Finally!!! My review is here, after I’ve been long overdue😭.

Firstly, I’d like to apologize to the author for taking so much time to put this out here. I’ve been really busy with life, and reading become very difficult. So of course, I’m very glad I got to finish this now.

RATING:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

MY REVIEW:

When I first got into this book, I wasn’t even sure I’d read it to the end😂😂. I have no idea if it was just life getting in the way or it was the book, but it was difficult getting into it (I felt bored at times.) So, I spoke to a friend about it, and she told me the book is so good, and Jsyk, it was!!! All I can say is, I’m grateful I kept going😂.

Anyways, the first thing I noticed about the book when I started reading was the writing style. Now, I am a sucker for good writings, so I did really love this one, paired with the pretty covers😻! (Y’all get yourselves cover designers like Eliza’s.) Eliza’s writing style was so clear and engaging, and the emphasis on certain words, together with those em dashes all made it really easy to read and flow with the story💕. I can swear I felt almost everything the characters did while reading, and hey! You needed to see me clutching my imaginary Pearl necklace towards the ending of the story because of the tension that was so packed over there!

As for the characters, at first, I loved Zoey even more than I did Claire (I still do). For a while, I even low-key felt Zoey deserved to be the main character! And just when I begun to understand Claire’s character, motivations, and arc, while also shipping her with Liam — even though he was a cocky person — the bartender came from nowhere. I genuinely thought Luke was going to be a side character, Yk, so imagine my surprise when he became Claire’s love interest😂😂. It’s either my brain took time to feel the chemistry between them, or I just irrationally wanted Liam.

Well, Claire was also very relatable!!! A very self aware queen through and through, despite all the lemons life threw at her. What made it even more easier to relate and understand her was that fear that no matter how self aware one can be, they also find it hard getting themselves out of terrible situations (I hope I’m making sense). However, her hiding the truth from Luke did annoy me. But at the same time, it was very understandable and a natural, human thing to do.

Now, Luke — the jealous, panicked, and protective man any girl with so much spiraling thoughts like Claire would really need 😂😂. Despite not thinking he was the main male character at first, I was actually genuinely intrigued by him — especially the gay story he put up for the world🤍. However, I loved watching this man unravel literally every scene for Claire, and what even made it better? The strings of words and explosives😹. Talk about a finished man girllll😭😂.

Eiiiiiii, the side characters (I think it’s been established by now that I somehow love them even more?) Anyways, these people literally carried the whole book!😂 Think Zoey — the perfect example of a fierce, humored bestie any girl would ever want. Or Liam — the funny, cocky dude in the group who barely takes life serious. Then James, the big, bulky, tattooed man who is both protective AND funny. (I genuinely still don’t understand how on earth Liam is bigger than him😭. James is literally a BIG BOY in my head😔✨). Anyways, with these side characters, the book actually felt more like a gang friendship story rather than a romance one — save for the spice between Claire and Luke — and I loved it!! Like, genuinely, broooo. I like to tell myself I am not big on friend groups, but this book was just IT. Literally made me see the good in group of friends shii — the playfulness, the supportiveness between them, everything😭✨.

To the parts where I believe should’ve been better:

* More internal conflict for Claire: I feel more of these would’ve made her much more easier to relate with and even more likeable at first.
* Less vague details about Claire’s past: Personally, I also feel like the details about her past life before she ran to Salem should’ve been much more detailed to help understand her and her motivations better, plus the fact that it alone, is what pushed her into leaving.
* Genuine moments between Claire and Luke: I’m not saying the moments they shared weren’t genuine — they were. Just that they felt unearned in a way. I feel like cute scenes, deep conversation scenes of them and all should’ve been much more than the spicy ones so they actually, really understand each other as a couple and don’t come across as flat characters who are just there for the spice.

All in all, I think Thinly Veiled is a very good book, and the author did I really excellent job balancing it with humor😂😂😂😂. If you’re looking for a book that’ll show you the good sides of friendships, then this is for you — this is what personally took this book to 4 stars for me. If you love a sarcastic FMC to relate with, I recommend you get to know Claire, and if you just want the safety of knowing protective, intentional, JEALOUS men actually exist, Luke is waiting for you.

While you add this to your TBR and get reading, I’ll be off to read the second book in the Veiled series “Veiled in Brick” which is not-so-coincidentally, my fav’s story — Zoey, here I come🫶🏾✨.

LASTLY, THANK YOU TO ELIZA AND BOOKSIRENS FOR OFFERING THIS BOOK COPY TO ME🖤.

Did someone say small town, found family, and drama???? SIGN. ME. UP.
When I saw that the girls move to Salem I was sold. Now I know it’s Salem, VA but try telling my mind that…because I did and it did not work. I am imagining a small town, spooky Salem, MA and it made me love the book even more. I was born on Halloween and love allll things spooky and ominous so it made the book even more perfect. PSA TIME: I will automatically be reading all of Eliza's books from here on out.

I loved love loved the relationship that developed between the five of them. And don’t even get me started on Liam, Zoey, and James. I was rooting for Liam, then James, and now I don’t even know. How could I possibly choose??? They’re both so different yet perfect. Meanwhile my brain was struggling to decide if I wanted Claire to be with Luke or get back together with Colton.

Next order of business… I need to have a little “discussion” with Luke about why he is SO dramatic about Liam. He made me think Liam was gonna be so awful and he’s literally a golden retriever like bro what??? I love Liam…dare I say he’s my favorite?

Claire and Luke are so cute like…almost hallmark movie cute. Now that I think of it, this book is like hallmark meets lifetime but in book form and I felt like I was watching a tv show. Their romance and chemistry blended perfectly and I loved how much everyone cared for each other immediately.

….i’m gonna say it, you may hate me and discredit this ENTIRE review but I can’t keep living a lie. I LIKE COLTON!!!

Whew that felt great to get off my chest. I’m tired of living a lie. I genuinely think Colton is a hot name so therefore…he’s hot. Which means I may be biased but I stand by what I said. K cool…I’m gonna go hide now before anyone bullies my judgment.

Peace out Girl Scout and stay tuned for my other Eliza reviews.

It is always a pretty amazing experience to read a book written by an author who obviously masters every single bit of what she’s doing.

Indeed, it is not that common to notice such exceptionally fluid writing style from the very first page; remarkable descriptions and details resulting in immediate visualisation as a reader, and last but not least, perfect transitions between each dialogue, scenes and insights from the narrator.

The author definitely has an eye for detail, with a highly elaborate literary portrayal of places and atmospheres, which makes the story very immersive; one of the greatest qualities for a contemporary fiction piece, in my opinion.

In addition to that, the narration also adds to the realism of the story: Claire is a super interesting character as a protagonist in the way her emotions, feelings, inner thoughts and conflicts are depicted. As opposed to what you could sometimes expect from ‘romance novel heroines’, she is not perfect and doesn’t pretend to be. On the contrary, she has many colours, shades and a real charisma of her own, and that makes her incredibly endearing and relatable.

And of course, this also applies to all side characters. Every interaction is a delight, thanks to a constant comical rhythm, but also very precise and smart details giving each dialogue or situation kind of a ‘movie-like’ aspect (for instance, as a reader, wouldn’t you perfectly picture what the author describes as a “sarcastically impatient gaze”, or a “voice that emulates Austin Powers”?).

Overall, “Thinly Veiled” is a novel that delivers great character development, an entire ambiance of its own with a constantly funny and witty tone, without even lacking a captivating plot. Indeed, it tells you about what it’s like to be a woman with a painful past to deal with, and a will to regain control over your life in order to start over, and try and building your own happiness.

Nothing is left behind, neither the storyline nor the characters. That is, each element of the book is remarkably well thought out and integrated to the others, resulting in an excellent piece of literature that deserves all the exposure it can get.

🥃“You’re stubborn, flighty when it comes to conflict, and you have a past that I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand but…all of that makes me want you more.”

This was a cute small town, coworkers romance novel. We have Claire Branson and Luke Turner who meet on the first day that Claire arrives in Salem.
It was an instant attraction for both of them but they didn’t pursue it because they didn’t think the other liked them. What I enjoyed about this story was that they became friends first and really solidified their friendship before anything else. The banter, sly looks, the flirtation we’re all 🔥🔥
Love the friendship between Claire and Zoey because their banter was hilarious. I love that Zoey told Claire things exactly how they were and didn’t beat around the bush. Think we all have a friend who tells it like it is lol so it was nice to see that in this book.
I didn’t enjoy how closed off Claire was in regard to her past. I get that she was trying to protect her friends but hiding it was only causing her to stress. I was happy when she changed her perspective on the situation she was coerced into and allowed those around her help her out.
Love that she was able to see that she is not alone and that she has a great support system in her friends and Luke. 🥰

4/5 recommend

Running away from a toxic past with a toxic ex boyfriend to a whole new state & finding love when you were least expecting it, to then find a family of your own who will literally take a bullet for you?! Oh yes, that right. Thinly Veiled had it all! Secrets, criminal history, angst, lots of banter, falling hard, found family, suspense, held for ransom, do I need to keep going?!

The family history of the FMC & how it negatively affected her, to her then following in the same footsteps as she tries to get away from it. That storyline was powerful yet remarkable. Remarkable because she was able to leave it all behind and move forward. Until her ex made her come back without a choice.

The suspense in this book was everything!! It was fast paced & definitely kept me on my toes. The found family who would do anything for the FMC had me loving the book 10x more! Literally the definition of “ride or dies”. The way Luke didn’t like Liam, but put that difference to the side to help his girl, *swoooon worthy*

Also, the MMC is a bartender & you already know what that means. He’s a softie & a gentleman, but mess with his girl & you’ll regret it. He stands behind her no matter what.

I’m super excited to read book 2, and hear all about Zoey’s story! She’s the FMC’s independent & spicy, but private roommate and best friend.

The only thing that made me rate this book 4 stars instead of 5, is the long chapters. The plot was perfect, the storyline kept me intrigued, I loved the different characters & backgrounds. I just loathe long drawn out chapters. So if I could rate with half stars, I’d give this book 4.5 ⭐️

“If Luke and I grew even closer and he knew what kind of life I used to live, I feared that I would lose him altogether.”

overview-

Claire moves to Salem for a new start, leaving her mysterious (and criminal) past behind. She didn’t expect to meet and fall in love with Luke so soon, and she’s forced to decide between owning up to her past or pushing him away with lies.

When Claire is forced to revisit her past life, Luke, pulled by the strings of love, follows with her.

review-

3.5⭐️

The premise of this book is like nothing I’ve ever read before. A suspenseful romantic comedy? Sounds very unique.

If you like books about lovable friend groups, this one’s for you! I loved watching Claire and Zoey expand their circle-for-two with unlikely friendships and romances. This book keeps you guessing in more than one way.

It was interesting to read a mesh between a suspenseful, high-stakes novel and a romantic comedy. To me, they’re two very different things, but it made for an entertaining plot.

There’s a few things I feel could have been done to take this book to the next level. Claire had a colorful and complex past, I would’ve liked to see more of that. If it had twice the amount of flashbacks, really playing into her childhood with her mother and finding out about her identify theft it would’ve added so much more to the story.

Happy to see that book 2 comes out soon, and this one is now on KU!

This book was gifted to me by the author but these thoughts are all my own 😊

I read this book in one day. If that doesn’t tell you how much I enjoyed it, then I don’t know what does! I absolutely loved everything about this book. Two best friends starting over in a new state, a town where the men are handsome and charming, and a suspenseful plot that leaves you on the edge of your seat - what more can you want?

I immediately fell in love with Luke. From the second Claire walked into the bar, he was sweet and playful. And as their relationship developed, he was patient and loyal - even when it became dangerous.

I also adored Claire and Zoey’s friendship. For as opposite as they were, they balanced each other out. I loved that Zoey was a bit crazy and carefree, but didn’t let that get in the way of showing her love and loyalty for Claire. Even hearing how their friendship started showed Zoey’s caring nature and how devoted she is to those she loves.

Of course, Claire was frustratingly stubborn in the way she chose to handle things. I found myself getting annoyed every time she tried to push people away and handle things on her own. But without her stubbornness, the story wouldn’t have unfolded the way that it did, so I was able to accept it and come to appreciate it in the end.

Overall, this book has everything I love in a book - romance, suspense and the promise of more to come. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books on these characters - definitely hoping to see Zoey’s story next!

Huge thanks to Eliza for sending this out to me - not to mention that I'm always going to be on board for a story that has roots in North Carolina ;)

THE BANTER, Y'ALL. The banter.. like honestly, top-tier and true-to-form back and forth conversation between all the characters. Claire is very definitely running from something and I LOVE how we don't know the whole story at the start, but we get bits and pieces as the plot moves along while she tries to start fresh with her lifelong bestie, Zoey.

I bet we all have a friend (or more) that we have the same chemistry with like Claire and Zoey and really? I want to see more books where we see strong female friendships highlighted, not just romantic ones.

It starts out with intrigue, I felt like like it hit a bit of steady move around the 30-40% mark, but at halfway and on we get more and more and the pressure keeps building until we get to that ending and - phew - that ending felt like an edge of my seat action movie.

I enjoyed watching Claire stumble through her efforts at being a better partner in a relationship with Luke, and bless his heart, LUKE. That man is just darling.. anxiety-ridden, hotter than all get out, humble and ready to admit his own personality flaws.

If you like:
- shows with friendship dynamics like 'Friends' where everyone naturally finds their place in the friend group
- unraveling the mystery at the pace set by the main character and their journey to be honest
- mutually flawed MCs that have explosive chemistry and have to work at figuring out the rest lol
.. then you're going to enjoy this read.

Veiled in Brick is the next in the series and follows Zoey - I am looking forward to jumping into her story!

Fun, spicy and suspenseful are three words I’d use to describe Thinly Veiled!

I thought the writing was witty and there were definitely some funny moments. I did think the chapters were a tad long, and sometimes lost my interest just a little bit but that’s mostly because I read while working and doing other things and I can’t focus that well on longer chapters. Easily distracted, amiright?

The main characters were fun and lovable and the side characters helped the story move along with their humor. Luke was adorbs and I absolutely loved him. Once you cracked open his shell, he really came out full loving and it was the sweetest and cutest thing about this book.

Claire was a bit more of a cookie you had to crack to get to the ooey gooey center. She’s simply a woman who left her hometown in NC to get a new fresh start on life. She instantly has the opportunity to set roots down in Salem, VA when she arrives and while it was a bit Insta-love and Insta-happiness for me, I did enjoy it. And the found family that came out of this move was irreplaceable!

And then there was the suspenseful ending and I just, I think it was done well but was also sort of abrupt. She was all happy one second, worried the next, and then bam bam bam. But that’s safe to say those last 50% sure went by fast because I was on the edge of my seat! And I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense, regardless of whether it was abrupt.

If you’re looking for an interesting new read that has both drama, love and humor…TV is the book for you!

Okay, for the good, I actually laughed out loud a bunch of times and had a lot of fun reading this book. I liked the chemistry between Claire and Luke and I liked that Claire's past was a bit mysterious. It had me intrigued and also wondering what kinds of things had happened to her that led to her wanting to start somewhere new and leave her old life and people she knew behind. And the way that past wasn't willing to let her go easily also kept me interested in what was going to happen next and how the people in her life were going to help her and react to learning about her mysterious past.

There was really only one thing that frustrated me in this book, and it's weird for me to say it. But some of the language. I'm certainly not innocent when it comes to that and actually have quite the sailor's vocabulary myself most days. But there was some things that the characters said that I just felt was a little over the top or too far on some occasions. But I think it was also just part of the character's personalities and it didn't take away from how I enjoyed reading this book, just got frustrating at times.

Overall, I recommend this book and author and I'm excited to read the next book in the series and find out which character the next one will focus on.

In this book, we meet Claire who moved to Salem, Viginia with her friend Zoe in hopes of putting her past behind. We also meet Luke, a bartender. And, before long, Claire who was hoping to stay away from men, starts flirting with him. Yeah… maybe not the best way to stay away from men, but hey… it´s all in fun, or so she thinks, except Luke is actually interested in her advances. Oops, so scratch staying away from men. ;)

And then her past catches up with her and someone finds her and blackmails her. So scratch putting her past behind as well! You know how they say that you often find your destiny on the path you took to avoid it? Well, here you have it. :P

The characters were well written, the chemistry between Claire and Luke was good. The story was easy to read. Of course, there´s the obligatory third act ‟break up” which I wish wasn´t so obvious to predict in every contemporary romance book I read…

But all in all, this was a good rom com and a nice easy read, and I enjoyed it. Luke didn´t give up on Claire and followed her despite her leaving him to protect him. Good job, Luke! And Zoey, too. I wasn´t too crazy about smart mouth Zoey in the beginning, but she grew on me. The banter got better, I think.
