What happens when you don't recognize the monsters in your bed?
Gael Thiago hates his job.
More than that, he hates how confused he's gotten. The past year has been one of the most complicated of his life, and he's been left feeling adrift in more ways than one. He decides to try and fix this by signing up for some deviant play at the exclusive Moonward Manor, a club that caters to the dark and twisted. After, he thinks maybe he's finally found a reprieve from the loneliness in Kai, the man assigned to be his bedpartner, but when there's a contract involved and the relationship is based strictly on sex, is it all right to get attached? When Gael gets invited to a murder mystery event and goes, hoping to run into Kai, what he ends up stepping into is the playground of a very real killer. One who's secretly set their sights on him.
Kai Laurier isn't what he seems.
But then, no one ever is. He's lived and worked at Moonward Manor since its opening, but he's never been drawn to anyone the way he is to Detective Gael Thiago. If only Gael wasn't so sad all the time, if he opened up and trusted his instincts, the two of them could live in eternal bliss. The detective has never said he wanted anything more than the contract between them, but Kai is certain he can convince the other man if given the chance. That chance comes when the two meet again at the murder mystery event. Now, he's got Gael right where he needs him, he just needs to find the best way to help the detective unravel the mystery and see what Kai has always known.
Devils come in many forms.
And they do things for many different reasons. The Devil of Moonward has a plan. He's set the board and invited all of the important players, with Gael and Kai at the heart of it all. He'll have them dancing to his tune in no time, confident he can show them his way of thinking is the right one.
The game has begun. The prize has been decided. And he has no intention of losing.
Trigger Warnings: This is a Dark MM Why Choose Romance, and as such, there will be themes and situations not suitable for all readers. The main character ends up with two different men, both of whom are obsessed with him. There's murder, mystery, dub-con, violence, and explicit sexual content. Please be sure to check the author's note at the beginning of the book for a full list of triggers before deciding to read.
This is a companion novel to Between the Devil and the Sea, featuring Gael. The events take place after those of BTDATS, but this is a standalone, so BTDATS does not need to be read first in order to read this one. It is suggest, however, you check the blurb of that book so you have a basic understanding. The blurb is more than enough for this.
Librarians, please don't add books. I stay up to date and add them myself and have ended up with many multiple copies because others add them later. Thank you!
Chani majored in Creative Writing at Johnson State College in Vermont. To pay her bills, she has worked many odd jobs, including, but not limited to, telemarketing, order picking in a warehouse, and filling ink cartridges. When she isn’t writing, she’s binging TV shows, drawing, or frequenting zoos/aquariums. Unfortunately, that was a tad boring. Not bad in any way, but somehow this book didn't give me much. It has a wonderful story even if the setting is a bit reminiscent of a well known crime novel. I found it a bit stupid at first, but then I liked the structure of the story. Gael as a character is also interesting and could theoretically have been outstanding. I think the author stays too much on the surface here. The peculiarities of the species Gael belongs to are perfect for delving much further into the depths of his psyche and somehow I expected that after all the wonderfully psychotic stories the author has already written. And Kai also needed a lot more depth.
“We still have a choice,” he replied. “At least, in the beginning. Eventually, I might start craving the things you can do to me, the way you can make my body sing. Will that be a problem?” “No,” he said, but Gael latched onto his wrists. “Really think it through. I could become that clingy type of boyfriend that gets jealous over nothing and wakes you in the middle of the night demanding you fuck me.” Kai grinned at him wolfishly. “Promises, promises.” “I mean it.” “So do I. That’s what I want from you. I want you to need me.” 🌹🖤🌹
A bit of a shame. The same things are often repeated and explained, as we know from the author, so that's not surprising, but that there isn't more ... I would have expected more power from the ending, because when the MCs are finally together properly, there's quite a lot left unsaid and nothing really happens with the relationship, so, more content, more emotion, more excitement, I don't know.
it’s like a murder mystery, except you know who the murderer is the whole time, and the “twist” is only news to gael bc it’s obvi from chapter 1 (in combination with the blurb) what’s going on. then, combine that with the fact that we see gael signing up for the first time at moonward manor and then it SKIPS FORWARD IN TIME to the point where there’s already been FIVE off page encounters with kai and the obsession is in full swing. ok then what am i even here for😭 dropping me in the middle of the story…..cool cool cool, now i can’t connect and that just makes the sex scenes read very clinical, and even kai’s presence and personality feels tamer than most of chani’s devils. but, as always with chani, i love the creativity, i love that you’re always getting completely new characters and traits, and that’s the only reason i was able to finish. bc really, giving me a murder mystery with no mystery🙄 like what am i supposed to do with that babes??💀
Devil in the Details continues Gael's story as he was featured heavily in Between the Devil and the Sea. With his story, you can see his pain and confusion from his previous partner's decisions and must reconcile his feelings with the fallout of everything.
Gael is invited to a murder mystery party, where he can indulge in all his fantasies when everything turns upside down due to an actual murder. Everything quickly spins out of control as multiple guests wind up dead and you discover there is a completely separate game in play with Gael as the main player, even without his knowledge.
Overall I enjoyed the unique setup of this story. I liked getting Gael's perspective and understanding his feelings towards his former partner and watching his falling for Kai. Kai is a completely different beast and I enjoyed the slow unraveling of his secrets.
I love being back in this world and would love to get more of these fascinating morally grey characters.
** I reviewed a complimentary copy of this story.***
"Gael had always been accused of being too reckless and daring. Maybe he’d forgotten that in these past months, but it was all coming back to him now when a thread of anticipation swept through him. What was the worst that could happen? He accepted the invitation."
Whilst Devil in the Details can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, I do highly recommend that you immediately download and devour Between the Devil and the Sea first, as Devil in the Details is a companion book of sorts with that one, featuring the ex-work partner of our MC, Gael Thiago.
Devil in the Details is an absolute rollercoaster of twisted delights, set in a complex, rich and exotic sci-fi world that Chani Lynn Feener has seamlessly and effortlessly created for our reading pleasure!
Gael is a Detective and a Sampson (a race who are well known for their free thinking around sexuality and sex in general), and is taking some time out from his IPF police work at the exclusive Moonward Manor, a club that caters to the dark and twisted.
Whilst Gael is there searching for answers about his ex-partner, Detective Shadow Yor, he meets the delicious Kai Laurier and they explore some of his darker k*nks together. When Gael receives an invitation from the mysterious Owner to a Murder Mystery weekend event, he decides to attend. Except the event turns out to be anything but harmless fun.....
Do check out the author's warnings as there are some dark themes, but you will absolutely inhale this if you love:

Are you a fan of murder cases, vigilante serial killers and twisted dark romances? This book is for you! I truly couldn't put this book down. I don't know what kind of drug was in this but I literally sat down the WHOLE day to finish this. Now, I might be kind of biased when it comes to Chani Lynn Feener's books I will admit it. But I still feel like this was on whole another level plot wise. I loved the plot and I feel like this book was waaay better than Between the Devil and the Sea. And I loved Gael. You could feel how losing the only friend he had impacted his life and he desperately wanted to know why, why Shadow left him for a serial killer. Well! He found out why, at least that's what I can say. I loved the plot but one thing I would argue is that maybe it might have been better if we discovered some things later in the book instead of getting small pieces of the truth from the beginning. But again, it didn't ruin the book for me and I truly enjoyed this book maybe too much. Between trying to solve a fake murder case turning a real murder case, Gael also struggles to find what makes him happy. The murder plot and the Gael's revelations go hand in hand. While trying to find a murderer he also starts to understand why his friend left him for a serial killer and why some fucked up situations might not be as fucked up as he thought before. While I would love for 'Kai' thing to be a more of a plot twist I could see how that played in the bigger scheme of things. With every other book Chani's writing truly takes me on whole another planet and I feel like she just ruined every other dark romance books for me. I wish this book was longer so I could enjoy it more!! I received a review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you for the free copy! :)
Disclaimer: I received a review copy for free via BookSirens, and am voluntarily leaving my honest thoughts. Many thanks to the author for the opportunity!
After some time I downgraded to 3.5-4 rather than a 4.5/5 since I wanted more romance. But still fun!!
3.5 rounded up. I've mentioned before that Between the Devil and the Sea is my absolute favorite read from Chani and I 1000% loved Gael there the whole way. He was always great and obviously Shade's biggest ally. Even back then when I was reading it, I was desperately hoping that he would get a book. AND YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA HOW EXCITED I AM THAT IT'S HERE. I'm happy that Chani delivered on a lot of things, but just keep in mind that this isn't anywhere near as dark.
First off, it's Chani's first MMM and not only is it one of my fave types of MMM, but it's got a SUPER FUN TWIST AND TURN. I can't even comment on it because I do think it's best going in blind. I'll just say that this will be a fun reread. 👀 It was delicious getting to witness Gael's personal angst about what happened in book 1 so I do highly recommend you read that before reading this if you haven't yet. On top of that, similar to how you read book 1 and know about some of what's going on and don't know about others, there are dynamics that you as a reader do know here. The hurt/comfort is *chef's kiss*. I think Chani laid out the premise really well and the pacing worked for me. There's another murder mystery too!
My main complaint is that we don't get more of the trio's dynamic in the final act and I feel like we spent too much time on the mystery and other factors instead of the main dynamic. But honestly, since this was supposed to be a novella, I'm still happy Gael got a full book. If Chani ever decides to add a new entry to this series, I'd absolutely gobble it up.
---- I finished in 1.5 sittings, I couldn't put it down. This wasn't as dark as book 1, but still DELICIOUS and loved the personal angst and hurt/comfort we got. Full RTC ---- OH MY FUCKING GOD, GAEL GETTING A BOOK IS ALL I WANTED. THANK YOU CHANI. 🥰
Alright, wow, where to start with this review? I liked it, of course. It has the essence of a mystery to it not because the reader is trying to find out whodunnit but because the why factor, plus Gael is trying to find the murderer, so the mystery feel is there. The setting: stuck on an island with no way to communicate to land while the murderer keeps killing people, is one of my favorites for mysteries, so it was fun to see it played with here. I also like how with all these books the author gives the characters different or enhanced traits. Everyone is humanoid, but everyone is a different species. Learning about Gael and the love interests was really interesting and I love how it was used for manipulating Gael and also explaining Gael's complicated feelings after the end of book 1.
My only complaint is that I wish we got to see more of the MCs and how they act when they are together or maybe just more honest interaction between them? Just... more hahaha but considering that this book is a good 100 pages shorter than the recent books the author has come out with, I truly can't complain too much. It is done really well and the flow of it made time pass by without me realizing it.
As always I look forward to reading whatever this author comes out with next.
Although it was fantastic, I didn't quite enjoy this book as much as I have Teens d's books in the past. Part of that was due to Gael's obsession with Shades reasons for leaving and his overall absence. I know that there was never anything romantic there and I'm not saying it was even implied, but the way Gael would cling to the relationship almost felt more like a jilted lover than an absent best friend. It just felt a bit confusing at times. Other than that, this was a great novel and I enjoyed the read.
It’s no secret that I am absolutely obsessed with Chani’s books and this one was another total banger! If you like your MCs dark, depraved and surrounded with red flags galore, this book is for you…
This book is the sequel to ‘Between The Devil and the Sea’. Although this one could easily be read as a standalone, I recommend reading BTDATS beforehand as the characters from that book are referenced a lot in this one. Plus BTDATS is freaking amazing, so why wouldn’t you? This book follows Shadow’s best friend and former police partner Gael, as he is invited to a private murder-mystery dinner party at a sex club which quickly becomes the scene of several gruesome murders that Gael has to try and solve for real.
I don’t want to give too much away, because this book at its heart is a murder mystery in space! Think old school Agatha Christie, mixed with Knives Out and Glass Onion all set in a sex club on a man-made planet. There are twists and turns and you’ll be kept guessing throughout. Alongside the mystery is also a romance plot which also kept me puzzling - nothing on this planet is at all what it seems!
Read for: ✨ Possessive obsessive love interest ✨ Police detective x sex worker ✨ Touch him and you die ✨ Hurt/comfort ✨ Murder mystery in space ✨ Finding a mate before it’s too late ✨ Different species with different sexual needs
I very much recommend this book, but please check trigger warnings if you need to! Thank you to the author for an early ARC copy of this book so I could do some proofreading/editing 💕
I was so excited to see a second book in The Devil and the Sea series because the first one was so good. This book is hot and covers several kinks (read the content warning if you have triggers) but has a lovely plot as well. Devil in the Details is a romance wrapped in a murder mystery wrapped in a fantasy world.
Book 2, Devil in the Details is Gael's story. Gael is a detective who recently lost his long-time work partner, Shadow Yor (see book 1). He is lonely and searching for several things in this book- a confidant, meaning in his work and understanding of Shadow's choices in book 1. He finds everything and more in Kai, a man he meets at an erotic club. They have several incredibly hot encounters but Gael isn't ready to commit quite yet. He's scared of so many things. I want to avoid giving any spoilers but this book is great... the smutty parts are hot and the plot is engaging. I love a good grovelling scene and this book delivered sooo well.
I loved the push and pull both within and between the characters. They each learn how finding everything you ever wanted comes with a cost. Gael is lonely and seeking connection, but is terrified of finding it and possibly losing himself. He has this strong sense of morality and shame related to his preferences in bed but is a slave to the nature of his species. The character work in this book was very intriguing and kept me invested (murder mystery isn't really my fave plot line generally).
This is book 2 in the series but I think it can be read as a standalone. The author reviews the important parts of book one in a way that helps the reader understand what happened previously. I loved book 1 and it does provide context to Gael's story, so I'd recommend starting with it... but it's not required.
Rating: 4 Angst: 3/5 Steam: 3.5/5
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I've been waiting for this book ever since the author announced that this would be her first “why choose” dark romance book, emphasis on “first,” since I have it on good authority that there will be more in the near future.
This is a companion novel to Between the Devil and the Sea, featuring Gael. The events take place after those of BTDATS, but this is a standalone, so BTDATS does not need to be read first in order to read this one.
Gael was Shade's fellow inspector, but after the events that happened in the previous book he was promoted to Detective, a job that he has always hated, but now more so, since he no longer has his best friend by his side.
As a way to get over his “loss” Gael has been going on vacation to Alter, which is a vacation resort for those who want to explore their sexuality and all kinds of kink safely, and it is here where Gael meets Kai.
The story begins when Gael is invited to spend the holiday weekend at Moonward Manor along with nine other members and two employees. The event consisted of each guest representing a character, there would be a fake murder and a fake murderer, and they had to reveal the mystery, whoever did so would be the winner.
But… shortly after everyone had arrived, they realized that there is a dead person, and a very real murderer. They don't know who or why this person is killing them, and now they could not leave the island, because there is a storm and communications are cut off.
And because it is a holiday weekend, there is no one to ask for help.
Who is the murderer?
Why is he killing them?
Who will be the next victim?
Who are the members, and how are they related to each other?
Who can be trusted?
Does Kai feel the same way about Gael?
How many of them will survive until Tuesday?
Who is Kai really?
Who is helping the murderer?
On top of this plot of mystery and murders we also have the romance between Kai and Gael and if that were not enough there is also the second love interest, and we do not know with certainty who that person is until well into the story, but clues are left, We just have to pay attention to the details.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Anyone who knows me knows I tend to stay away from MM+ books. I’ve read a few that I’ve enjoyed, but most of the time it’s just not for me. However, when Chani announced that she was writing Gael’s book and that it would be a Why Choose book, I knew that I was going to read it regardless of my feelings in the past. Man, am I SO glad that I chose to read this one. It had me drawn in from the prologue, and once I met the two love interests, I was down for it.
Chani has developed this amazing universe where the Devils of Vitality exist and the I.P.F. patrols the universe keeping its citizens in line. This book follows the events of Between the Devil and the Sea. Shadow Yor, Gael’s former partner, is gone and Gael is struggling with his friend no longer being a huge part of his life. He starts to visit Moonward Manor, an exclusive club that caters to darker interests, to understand his friend’s choices. While there, he meets Kai and develops feelings for this intense man. I don’t want to give too much away because I feel like it is best enjoyed only knowing the basics (which can be found in the blurb or previous book).
This book could possibly be read as a standalone, but it would be enjoyed more if you read Book 1. Gael alludes to many things that happened in that book, plus it’s a great book too. Gael and his men form an intense connection and I loved seeing how it played out. I am very intrigued by this planet (where the I.P.F. holds no power) and the club. I loved the idea of the Connects forming a trio and how Gael as a Sampson would fit into that bond. It was just really interesting and compelling.
I think at this point, I will read anything that Chani writes because I am physically unable to put it down. The books just continue to build upon this universe that I was already fascinated with. The characters and storylines are ones that I know I will love. Chani knows how to write possessive, psychotic characters who will do anything for the one that they love. I honestly cannot wait to read the next one.
I received an ARC from BookSirens for my honest review
3.5 *warning, this is pretty spoilery* I really enjoyed this, and I loved the mystery and the twins… I think I really kept expecting them to act out some of the stuff they kept saying they were into and doing, but they didn’t. I kind of wish we hadn’t missed the times they’d spent together before this book, cause it would have helped solidify their relationship growth in my mind.
I really liked a lot about this (like I usually do for Chani) but I think it was missing a little something for me. Honestly I’d hesitate to even call this dark.

Interesting story overall, I just wanted to hug Gail through out the whole book and say that everything is going to be alright. I prefer the first book though.
Epic MM romance. Totally hit that need in me for something more dangerous and viscerally raw. I needed that edge of fear/pain yet still emotionally in need of each other. It gave me ALL the feels and I definitely liked it. Great book. (Not the best choice for sensitive readers)
Read for a group challenge week 4. Loved this one. Will likely re-read later on in the year when I have time and not sleep deprived. Stayed up till half one to finish. Bit iffy on Gael's obsession with Shade, sad they didn't meet up at the end, would've been nice to see the possessiveness of each clash. Mostly predictable. If Tate wasn't the other half he was the obstacle. Not sure who was more manipulative, Apollo or Kai. Gutted about the friend, but it did sort of cement things relationship wise. Ro was a loose cannon but To was sweet. Slow therapy, closing in trap. Loved it.

Surprisingly not as dark as I was expecting, considering the mindf*ck of the first book and what I've become accustomed to with Feener's Devils of Vitality series...like seriously, there were actually hang-ups about .
The lack of darkness wasn't a bad thing, especially when it was combined with plenty of murder. But the reason it's a 4 star read for me is Gael's character - for a supposedly amazing detective, he's darn slow on the uptake.
But I adored the romance dynamic, and even if I found myself wishing for one of those primal play scenes to be laid out on page instead of by way of fond memory recollection, the story ended rather delightfully. Feener's reads are always (strangely?) comfort reads for me, and this one was an equal level of enjoyable to the rest.
NGL this book could have been 150 pages less. A good editor could have made this book shine. Instead it was very slow and very boring even when it was supposed to be exciting. The pace was SO off. I literally fell asleep during one of the sex scenes 😴😴😴. They became monotonous and predictable. AND what was super annoying was you thought based on the prologue you’d get a few primal scenes but no! They were astroturf. Ugh. You never got the FIRST scene of Kai and Gael together. WTF. That’s writing 101. Never turf the first encounter because it’s the best way to get first impressions of these characters together! UGH 😩
It’s sad because I had high hopes for Gael’s book. He moped about Shade through out the entire book. BORING. He was your work partner that you were crazy attached to which was creepy. Shade was said 96 times 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄😵💫ugh!! Get over it. He chose a serial killer over you and rightly so.
This “murder mystery” was anything but. It was obvious who was doing what. The most important part of the story was glossed over. So disappointing. Gael is such a dud and whiner. By the end, I didn’t even want him to find happiness. Blast him 🙄🙄
Actual rating- 4.5 stars I have seen many people say this book just did not compare to the first in the series, but to me it is the exact opposite. I really loved this book. As main characters go, I found Gael interesting, with the focus on his struggle with his best friend choosing a murderer over staying with him as partners, and what him leaving has done to his life since.
To summarize, this book follows the best friend/inspector in the first book about Shadow and Apollo, after Gael had been promoted to detective and struggles to understand Shades reasoning. This leads him to Atlas, the man-made planet revolving around sex clubs. More specifically, he ends up in Moonward Manor, which is known to cater to more BDSM types, as well as kinks that are otherwise less socially acceptable. Here, he meets an employee named Kai that he quickly falls head over heels for.
The book follows Gael after he has already visited Moonward Manor a number of times, but was invited back for a murder mystery weekend when the resort was otherwise closed off. Things take a turn, however, when members of the party start being actually murdered, and with no way off the island until the holidays are over, eyes turn to Gael to figure out what is happening.
The murder mystery aspects of this book was very appealing to me, and while I have read other reviews critiquing that the murderer was predictable, I felt that it was a good fit for the book. First, it is marketed as a dark romance, so I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say the love interest is the guilty party, but while that is obvious to the audience, it isn't for Gael. A large portion of my majority for the book I think was getting to look at at Gaels feelings and evaluate what the situation would be like for someone who is totally clueless as to what is happening. This also aided in making me more interested in the main couples relationship and dynamic.
Kai was an interesting character, and his end motives left me satisfied with the book, as well as the stance of Gael and his relationship. It was clear that they both cared for each other, and it was not just a play up for his murderous plans. In fact, it was revealed that they probably wouldn't have happened if not for Gael... which typing may sound a bit bad, but it felt strangely sweet while reading.
Overall, I think I need more murder mystery romances in my life ASAP.
Alright she got me back! I actually didn’t like the book before this and was worried that it signaled either a decline in quality or my own falling out of love with her but this one pulled me back on the fan train! The typos were minimal this time, I thought our main was relatively fleshed out, and I liked the idea of the connect species. Overall, I didn’t feel as endeared to Kai(s) which is where I think this book suffered. One or two more scenes of them scheming would have bumped the rating to a four
Some space shenanigans, not as captivating as the first was but I did like it. Not such a fan of the setting but I did like the mystery and the relationships, I was only confused for a couple of moments. I am glad to finish this one so I can look closer at some of her other series.
The story overall was engaging and fun. I liked Gael from the previous book, so I was quite happy he was going to get his own stroy. The twins were interesting characters and despite being very similar they also had their own characteristics. The plot of the book was interesting if a bit on the nose at times. Unfortunately what ultimately ruined my reading experience were the constant grammatical errors. English isn't my first language, but even I was annoyed by the repeated mistakes or just overall missing words in sentences. Sometimes there could be two to three mistakes or missing words on one page which just made me put the book down multiple times.
Read this two months ago and still haven't stopped thinking about it. I annotated my kindle copy so much I had to get the paperback version just to transfer all my notes and annotations. One of the best books I've ever read and is now one of my favorite books ever.
I received this book for free. This does not impact my review in any shape or form.
Devil in the Details, by Cheri Lynn Feener, is a dark romance about about learning, understanding, and falling in love with the most corrupt parts of yourself. Gael Thiago is still reeling over the betrayal his partner, Shade, had dealt him. He can’t wrap his mind around the idea that a detective, someone he worked with and grew to trust and depend on, had given everything up to be with a serial killer. As such, he decides to go to Alter, a World Ship that prides itself on sexual gratification and privacy (keyword). When he, as well as other guests, become trapped with a psychotic serial killer on board, Gael is forced to reconcile his beliefs with the justice that so many others have tried to ingrain in him.
I liked the friendship Gael and Shade shared. Even though it’s been a year, he’s relying on Shade for guidance, detective work, or otherwise. And personally, I understand his confusion and frustration. To an outsider, the relationship Shade and Apollo have can be considered abuse. Then again, it’s one of the reasons why BDSM practitioners sell the sign “safe, sane, and CONSENSUAL”. It’s a dynamic that Kai is willing to offer to Gael; he wants Gael on his side, but he knows he’s got to ease him into things. And as much as Gael disapproves, he’s eager to learn. There is a bit of escapism there, but I’m okay with it. It’s hot, it’s steamy, and it satisfies every BookToker’s fantasies, including mine.
That being said, I’m not sure how I feel about the relationship and the crimes committed. It’s one thing to punish people for making snuff films and videotaping others without their consent. It’s another to get someone so desperate for an orgasm that they’re willing to do whatever you say. I do enjoy dark romance. Don’t get me wrong; again, the scenes are sexy and filled with violent lust, but when it comes to consent, that’s where I am having a bit of an issue. Talking would definitely help, and I do have to agree with Kai; it would’ve been better to have Gael see everything, including the insanity. I’m glad that it worked out. Truly I am. But consent is sexy, and I’m not budging on that.
Nonetheless, I did like the book, and I will be on the lookout for Feener’s next dark romance. So for now, I’ll give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.
I was a little disappointed and wanted this to be something it wasn't
I think I was thrown off at the start because of how the first couple of chapters are played out. In the prologue, or maybe it was chapter one either way, we meet Gael. He is signing up for this event because he kind of wants to know how his partner could fall in love and decide to be with the psychopath killer who stalked him and took advantage of him (all information that is revealed in the first chapter but is in regards to the events of book one). Gael matches with someone and they agree to do a primal play scene together. This is all set up through like a third-party site, and it's carried out in a safe environment. Okay, great, cool instructing start. In the next chapter, we see the guy whom he matched with. We learn he has a brother, and they think that Gael is the one for them. Cool, cool, cool. And then a year passes. The scene happened, except we didn’t see it. We don’t get to see the primal play scene, which like, uh, why not???? Okay, fine. We were told that Gael and Kai (the one with whom he did the scene) met on several occasions and exchanged numbers, but we never saw any of that. The events of the story take place after the all of this. I also wish there was more of them together at the end. The actual bonding and get-together part happened so fast, and then it's over, and the end also skips ahead a year. The murder mystery part was also kinda mmm, how do you say lame? Like, yeah, the premise is interesting, but I am still waiting for Gael to do any actual detective work and not just be there when people get killed and happen to stumble across certain things. Like nothing is actually solved based on his intelligence or capabilities in his job. The idea was super interesting to have these people get together for a fake murder mystery event, and then psych it turns into a real murder like that interesting. But it just seems like in all of these books (both these and the devils of Vitality), when there is a major plot mystery or whatever, there is always someone else pulling the Strings, and it's supposed to be this grand reveal, but it never is. It's kind of just why not write what you’re good at? Like I really liked parts of Echo and I loved These Silent Stars, but the rest of these have just not been hitting.
I’ve always adored Chani’s storytelling, and finally had the chance to dive back into her The Devil and the Sea duet — it felt so good to return to her haunting, twisty world.
This gripping installment follows Gael, an inspector haunted by the loss of his partner. Determined to uncover the truth, he infiltrates Moonward Manor under unusual circumstances: a mysterious, high-stakes crime mystery party where fiction quickly becomes deadly reality. 🕵️♂️🔪
As bodies appear and chaos unfolds, Gael isn’t just battling external threats — he’s wrestling with a growing addiction and the unsettling sense that someone’s pulling his strings. The tension builds masterfully, and just when you think you know who’s in control... the story flips everything on its head.
While it wasn’t quite as spicy as I’ve come to expect from Chani’s other work, the psychological intensity and final twist absolutely delivered. That ending? Jaw. Dropped. 💥
Quotes: Or how he got off on being held down, his face shoved into the debris-covered ground, his clothes torn from his body…
“If you keep treating me like I’m glass,” he mumbled against Kai, “I’m afraid I’ll actually break like it.” “That’s fine,” Kai replied smoothly. “I’ll piece you back together again, Gael. There’s nothing to fear. I won’t judge your vulnerability. It simply means you have a soul.”
⁉️QOTD: If you found yourself in a crime mystery game that suddenly became real, what would your strategy be to survive—and would you trust anyone along the way? ⁉️
