Melissa is about to deliver a speech on her daughter's eighteenth birthday party, when she finds a slip of paper in her speech. It says, " She is not who you think she is". Her entire world comes crashing down as she is forced to question everything she knows about her daughter, her perfect daughter, Ruby.
This family drama resonated close to my heart. All the characters, especially the women, Melissa, Ruby, Sadie, Melissa's mom, Megan, have so many layers, and are so richly developed, they seemed very real. In this book, there's no right or wrong, but it portrays how everyone makes mistakes, big or small. Families are built on these mistakes, or how well one can hide them.
What set this book apart from many family dramas which portray a dysfunctional family behind a perfect facade was that this family is genuinely perfect. True, there are mistakes made, but those mistakes are owed up and forgiven. Issues are dealt with as a team. There are no vile characters, only very ordinary ones, which makes this book so heartwarming. I loved how set on a premise of lies, this book was all about trust and friendship and family ties.
There are some twists and turns, but over all this is a medium paced book, and has a happy ending. I lived reading this one and recommend it to all lovers of drama and mysteries.
A huge thanks to bookouture, netgalley and the author for this ARC copy in return for my free and honest review.
