Fire's Hand, Fate's Heart

Rate this book
Fire’s hand begets the spark,
That lights the way for Fate’s bold heart.

As a Warden of the Flame, Verity Corallan has sworn to protect the people. So, when it is rumored that the warmongering kingdom to the south has obtained a weapon of formidable power, she understands what’s coming. By order of the Council, Verity is tasked with infiltrating the kingdom of Westhold and bringing back its secrets. Her best friend — and fellow Warden — is going with her, but so is the irksome mercenary, Dare.

Dare is used to secrecy, stealing — and working alone. But a job like this requires teamwork, however reluctant. What the group discovers is far more powerful than any magic seen before. A conduit for divine power, its force could mean the destruction of not just towns and cities, but the entire continent.

As the unlikely allies struggle to piece together the mysteries of their mission and uphold their responsibilities to the realm, one question looms above Verity and Dare: how do they destroy a weapon that has been forged by indestructible powers?

This is the first book in the Five Fates series by Lindsey Brounstein.

ARC review.
I absolutely loved this book. It's a fantasy adventure and you definitely feel like you're on the journey with the characters. So let me brief on what made this book so good to me (brief because I'm useless with words and because i am still processing😅).

Firstly, the world building. It was easy to keep track of the travel and where the characters were. The descriptions of the forests, the mountains, the towns etc, allowed me as a reader to get a good grasp on the world. Nothing felt out of place or unnecessarily introduced.

The storyline itself...🤌. No spoilers here but it is well thought out. It had me immersed in the the story in every page. And I am left with so many questions, which is good because it leaves me NEEDING book 2... and 3  and 4, and 5, right now!!!

The characters... for the first time EVER, I can't pick a favourite. Every single one is well written. Main characters and secondary characters alike, they are all lovable and... layered, for lack of better word, to add to the storyline. The thing I loved most about reading these characters is that I really got to learn who they are along the way, nothing felt forced.

The banter is top tier! I laughed so much. The epic fights, the comradeship, the magic... I cried. I gasped. I went into shock. This book had me HOOKED.

As someone who grew up on fantasy adventure books, this filled my cup. Fuelled my soul. I have read many books this year but this is now sitting in my top favs, if not is the favourite so far.

I’ve been excited about this book for a long time, and was pleased to be gifted an ARC. It lived up to all my expectations and then some!

First, I must say, I would have absolutely never guessed that this was Lindsey’s first book. Her voice is so good and seems so … experienced isn’t the word? But natural and confident? It read like she’d been writing forever.

Around 12-14 chapters in I started to really notice and appreciate how much world building was happening subtly and seamlessly. I was immersed without being bombarded, and if there was a new concept that was introduced, it never seemed out of place. There was never a point where I felt like the story was sacrificed in the pursuit of building the world we were in.

The characters were lovable and layered; nuanced without being so shrouded in mystery that I felt I ‘never really knew them’ as certain reveals happened. (Ok, ok, Solace is different.) And I loved that as I learned something that other characters didn’t know, that suspense didn’t get drug out an exhaustingly long time. I like being the first one in on the surprise; I don’t like being the ONLY one.

The world and scenarios were all believable while still balancing the fantastical. The mirroring in the prologue and epilogue delighted me. The characters felt like family. I loved absolutely every minute, and I cannot wait for more!

Let me tell you about Fires Hand, Fates Heart (FHFH)

One word : Amazing. I absolutely loved this book and Lindsey is such an amazing writer!! This book gave me like…Throne of Glass, maybe The Witcher, DnD or WoW vibes and I am obsessedddd.

I love the concepts of the world building. It’s so original!

The last like 50 pages??? On. The. Edge. Of. My. Seat. And the end??? I cannot wait for book 2!! (and book 3. and the prequel 😂)

I feel like some fantasy novels have so much fighting and not enough character interactions. This had the perfect balance of both!

The characters are diverse and there is queer representation! This book doesn’t have any spice but I love the (non romantic) banter between characters!

Highly recommend !!

💫 Spoiler-Free ARC Review 💫

“A weak man can swim far, so long as he swims with the current. It takes a strong man to swim against the current and still arrive at his destination.”
~~
I was hooked from the prologue! Then as I dove into the book itself, I fell quickly for the incredible cast of characters. Each character’s journey came together so seamlessly in this story—each breadcrumb had me reading on to find out more.

The lore was intriguing, the magic system unique (in my opinion). The action, the emotions, the banter and character dynamics had me flipping (digital lol) pages pretty quickly. There is no spice in this book, but lots of tender, loving moments, queer rep, and a plutonic friendship so deep that I was envious of it.

If you like a story with found family, hidden identities, genuine friendships and a quest with high stakes, you’ll certainly get it with Fire’s Hand, Fate’s Heart.

I’m already looking forward to the sequel!

*** First off thank you so much to the author for allowing me to be an ARC reader. I was so excited to dive into your story ***

This book gave me everything a book needed. It had great plot, characters, world building, writing and just overall vibes. The book gives off major dungeons and dragons style adventure energy. It left nothing out including the cute cozy camping scenes (sometimes you just need those not to be skipped). The little scenes between actions gives you the story context and connections that really leave nothing out. This is one of my favorite parts as sometimes fantasy novels tend to move too fast for the connections to the character and stakes to take root in the reader but that is not at all the case here. The character driven plot was excellent and allowed for wonderful development of each character featured in a way that had me completely attached to each one of them. I loved the subtle hints of romance and the way it was handled underlying to the plot. This book literally had me feeling every emotion and kept my attention easily. Again I can’t talk enough about the amazing characters that felt like a dnd found family party. I laughed with them, I mourned with them and I just felt for them more and more in every page. I love where this story is headed and I promise that even though it is chunky and includes every detail you would ever need during an adventure you’ll still have questions and need to know where the story is going.

Lindsey Brounstein’s debut novel, Fire's Hand, Fate's Heart, is a masterclass in character development and storytelling. As someone new to the world of fantasy, I was swept up by the vivid, immersive experience she crafts, blending elements of love, trust, and adventure in a way that feels fresh yet deeply resonant.

The story follows a dynamic group of characters whose lives are intertwined by fate, each with their own struggles and desires. Brounstein's ability to make these characters feel real is astonishing—they are complex, flawed, and compelling. The tension between their individual goals and the larger, often mystical forces at play creates a paradox of emotions, where love is as much a risk as it is a reward. Trust is fragile, and easily shattered, yet it's also the very thing that can bind them together in moments of chaos.

One of the novel's most striking achievements is how it balances fast-paced action with deep, emotional introspection. The plot is laced with adventure, but it's the evolving relationships and inner conflicts that kept me hooked. There’s a sense of urgency and consequence in every interaction, pulling you into a world that feels both fantastical and achingly familiar.

Brounstein has created a world that I’m eager to revisit. The characters are still living rent-free in my mind, their unresolved fates lingering long after the last page. I can’t wait to see where the series goes next, as it’s clear that Fire's Hand, Fate's Heart is only the beginning of a much larger, captivating journey.

For anyone looking to explore a fantasy novel filled with rich characters and gripping emotional stakes, this book is an absolute must-read!

Holy Mackerel Studio Ghibli could pick up this series and make it into an anime!!!! I will do my best NOT to spoil anything because honestly that’s no fun for anyone! This is an amazing read that hooks you in from the prologue and keeps you reading until the end and craving the next book!

Dare- member of the prestigious Crimson Brothers, secret mage and thief by nature, works alone… until he gets shoved into a mission that he cannot say no to. My usual charms do not work on this crew of Wardens though? And if I go against HER I will be dead. (Or will I??? I am questioning EVERYTHING now.) What is this “weapon” it’s just a MAN!?! What needed that many locks??? He needs a name …..

Verity- mage and warden and warrior renowned. Has metal arms and spends her time training recruits, until she’s summoned away to complete mission impossible! With the most arrogant thief ever who gets on every single nerve! Ok fine he would make a good Warden if he put himself to it…. I don’t like secrets but at least Drystan is here too. Thank goodness!

Drystan- knows Verity to a T and acts like the middle man all day every day, is very good at this. But Dare is definitely testing these boundaries!!! Good guy though? I mean …. Dare named the “weapon” for crying out loud! And he’s very good at vanishing……

“Sol”- who am I? What am I? Will I ever find out? What did I steal? Who is pulling my strings? I am lost. So very lost. May I be found? These folks named me and brought me to many places …… am I even safe to be around?

What will be more impossible- working together to complete the mission or fighting against fate? And what happens when the “weapon” is just a man who has no memory of what he is or isn’t?

Verity and Drystan are Wardens. Upholders of good an justice, keepers of magic. Dare is a mercenary, with a penchant for slipping in and out of situations with whatever he needs in hand, be it someone else's property or information.

When they're thrown together, it's a balancing act between Verity's forthrightness, Dare's flippant, practical attitude, and Drystan's ability to keep the former from each other's throats. They need to learn how to work together for the good of their country, to stop a war. The cast of characters goes on and evolves with the story, but these three were the beginning.

From the first paragraph, I knew this book was something special. The writing superb, drawing me in, describing a scene so vividly that I could see ahat was happening like it was a movie. Each character is so distinct that it's easy to keep track of who is speaking. The adventure that they embark upon is so exciting right away that I had a hard time putting it down.

This felt like a TTRPG campaign, with so many obstacles thrown the characters' way that I had a hard time seeing the path to the goal they'd been set. But that made the journey all the more realistic for me, because nothing this important and difficult comes without some struggle.

I loved how distinct each character was, and how they dealt with each new challenge in their own way. And I love how hard it was to truly come together, because such disparate personalities are hard to reconcile.

This book is authentic, epic, and exciting. It felt like Lord of the Rings or Wheel Of Time, but with more realism in a fantasy setting. I loved this story, and I hope the author has many more to come.

I really really enjoyed this book! The plot and world building was fantastic, the magic system was unique and really well thought out, the characters definitely left their mark (I cried twice) and I'm really excited to see where this goes in the next book (which I will absolutely be reading)!

There's only a couple of things that are preventing me from giving 5 stars:
- the switch from first person for the prologue and epilogue to third person for the rest of the book was a little jarring. I understand why it was used, but the point of the hectic prologue in particular was almost a little lost once you moved to the rest of the story.
- the pacing sometimes seemed a little off. It dragged in some areas where it shouldn't but was too quick in others that could have used some more expansion.
- I wish there was more backstory on the Wardens. They play such a vital role in the story but there's little detail about why they have such a strong presence throughout the many realms/kingdoms, why they're so revered and how they came to be. A little more info on the gods might have been nice too.

Overall though, I really enjoyed the story and will quite happily pick up this world and it's characters again for book 2. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a physical copy for my bookshelf too because it definitely deserves a place there!

JOURNEY: A long journey is very common in fantasy books, though the only one I think of is the LOTR movie, which bored me to tears. I assumed all journey stories would be similar, so I've tried to avoid them. However, this one surprised me - it kept me hooked the whole way through and, at times, pushed me to the edge of my seat.

SYNOPSIS:
A lady warden bands together with unlikely allies to research an unknown weapon of mass destruction from the people who shouldn't have it, if it exists.

MY THOUGHTS:
I really, really loved this book. I was deeply invested and immersed in the story. I couldn't wait to pick it up to follow the character's journey some more.

Which, speaking of characters, it would be impossible for me to pick my favorite. There are two main characters, both of which I love for different reasons. The secondary characters are just as thought out with their own stories, lives, goals, etc. You could feel the emotions they had and the connections between them all.

I really enjoyed that there were a few times during this book that were unpredictable. I'm pretty good at predicting plots, events, twists and turns, so it was refreshing to experience something unexpected.

Firstly, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was an ideal fantasy adventure book - it had great characters with detailed world-building. The plot line was solid, and the ending left just enough crumbs to keep us hooked for the sequel.

While there were quite a few characters introduced, of varying importance to the story, our two mains were introduced slowly, with more being revealed when the time was right. Each had their own story which made them the way that they are, and as they travel together they all become a family, which is always nice and wholesome. The development in the two mains particular were done very nicely. Initially, I didn't like how headstrong the female main was, because of particular events, but she eventually mellowed out which was great.

The plot has its ups and downs. While the initial mission was interesting, it wasn't as captivating until the latter part, where the action and events pick up. The descriptive scenes introducing us to the magic system as well as the lore for the world adds layers onto the story, leaving want for more.

If you enjoy BG3 and/or D&D, this is definitely a must-read. I look forward to the future book(s)!

I picked up this book at a local bookstore, wanting to support another local, self-published author. While it did take me a while to get into it, I ended up really enjoying it!

Admittedly, I had a hard time connecting with Verity. She's very untrusting and standoffish at the beginning, which I found really off-putting. However, as the story goes on, she opens up and I found myself liking her more and more. By the end, she's still bristly, but she's learning to trust again. I love that character development.

On the other hand, I absolutely LOVED Dare. He's snarky and playful, and doesn't care at all what people think (at least, that's how it seems). I continued reading this book for him alone, and was surprised by his character development, too. In fact, all of the characters in this book are really well developed (and diverse), which is something I really enjoy.

The plot took an unexpected turn at the end, but it wasn't at all unnatural. Looking back on the story, it actually makes sense. The foreshadowing was really well done. There's also a found family aspect, which is always wonderful to read.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and very much look forward to what's in store for this cast of characters!

This novel is a true epic fantasy. With magic and gods and battles and politics, it gives you a taste of everything you want in a true adventure story.

The author manages to write across different events happening in parallel in a way that is so clear and engaging. Despite all of the action and adventure, the reader is easily able to keep up with the story.

The characters are rich and developed and absolutely lovable. I found myself rooting for them from the first page. Each character brings something unique to the story, lending their personalities, skill, and perspectives to every situation, offering the reader the opportunity to see things in different lights along the way.

Pair them with an incredibly lush setting and situation, you’re set up for a true adventure.

Lindsey Brounstein’s writing is approachable, deep, and lyrical. She weaves together dialogue, action, and illustration in the most stunning way. She’s given us a true fantasy experience I won’t soon forget.

This book is pure magic, and I mean that literally. It has everything you want in a fantasy adventure! Adventure, snarky humor, mystery, found family, the fate of the whole world on your shoulders - you know the norm!

Our leads - Dare and Verity who couldn’t be more opposites. I value their friendship as it does take awhile for them to open up and really work together. A note to my romance friends, this book isn’t a romance and these two are just friends! However we to meet other characters who might be involved later with them 👀

The writing, the flow, the movement, just everything is amazing. The cover ?!?!? It’s going on the special edition shelf bc this book is too important not to be there.

It’s been a special treat to read this beautiful book as I’ve seen it blossom from the 50,000 word challenge NANOWRIMO just a few years ago to me actually holding the physical book just yesterday. It was mind blowing. It goes to show if you want anything in life, you can achieve it! It may take time but you’ll get there!

“Fire’s Hand, Fate’s Heart”, book one of the Five Fates Series focuses on mercenary of the Crimson Brothers, “Dare” Wilhaven, and Warden of the Flame, Verity “Vee” Corallan, as they are contracted to work together on a mission to find out if rumors of a magically imbued weapon are true. They will need to work together and learn to trust each other if they want to succeed in uncovering the truth and to stay alive. The was such an engaging read filled with an interesting backstory and even more interesting characters. The story included lots of action and adventure, along with fantastical magic and creatures that you would want out of a fantasy book. Found family is another main element/trope of the story which is quite possibly one of my favorite pieces of this story. There was also a rivals/ enemies to friends which is also another pleasant trope. Overall, a fun first book to the Five Fates Series that lays the groundwork for what’s still to come in subsequent books. Looking forward to delving into book two and would recommend to all adventure fantasy readers and fans!

I got this ARC based on a tiny snippet I read from one of the main POV characters and MCs and I knew I would really enjoy reading about the shenanigans he gets into.

Fire's Hand, Fate's Heart is a multi-POV book with quite a cast but the author does a remarkable job of handling everyone's voices and POVs. Dare and Drystan were both delightful characters from start to finish though it did take me a while to like Verity, who I just wanted to give a big hard shake in the beginning 🤭

Even though I could predict some of the plot twists before they happened, it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the execution and the trope subversions did keep me guessing.

The platonic friendships between the MCs was done pretty well and the fact that romance was such a minor subplot definitely added in an extra star from me.

All in all, I stayed up all night reading this because once the action starts going, it's really hard to put down. 10/10, would recommend.

The first in a series, Fire's Hand Fate's Heart takes clear inspiration from Dungeons and Dragons' inspired campaign, as two Wardens of the Flame and a mercenary for hire are tasked with finding — and destroying — a dangerous weapon. While the book ended up not being necessarily my cup of tea (I longed for more in-depth worldbuilding and messier character dynamics as the travelling party expanded), I do think there's a lot to like here.

The two main leads' — uptight, honour bound Warden Verity, and roguish, confident mercenary Dare — dynamic is the undeniable beating heart of the book, and having a male-female centric storyline that doesn't end in romance was very refreshing. The casual and persistent inclusion of queer rep was also much appreciated, the prose often lushly descriptive, and I think for someone who enjoys DnD inspired stories, they'd enjoy the adventurous winding romp a great deal, and I'd heartily recommend.

This book. I had the chance to get an ARC copy of this, and I'm so glad I did.

Found family. Old friends found again. Adventure, quests, trials, and tribulations.

If you like fantasy type books like Eragon, this is a book for you. This book also reads a lot like a D&D campaign, and I love it. Each person that joins in has their own strengths and something they bring to the group.

The prologue of this book is everything. I was in. I cried but I was in! It invoked so much emotion that I couldn't put it down.

Verity has to be my favourite though. She just goes through everything but comes out stronger and it's amazing to read her journey.

I highly recommend this book. It's got action, adventure, found family, all the good stuff! And the world! It's so neat! I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of this book!!

Every once in a while, I read a fantasy book that reminds me of how I felt when I read Lord of the Rings for the first time, and this is one of those books. Like, just take me to this world, and let me stay there with these people. I would die very quickly, but I would die surrounded by friends.

I finished this book several weeks ago, and I actually loved it so much that I've been procrastinating writing the review. Whenever I read a book that really blows me away, I feel intimidated to write a review LOL

Anyway, moving on, where do I begin? Do you love epic fantasy quests? Do you love found families? Okay, then stop reading this review and just read the book. You will not be sorry.

There are too many good things to talk about, but my personal favorite things were the epic journey the characters go on (you learn a LOT about the story world from how much they travel) and the found family aspect of the book. The ways in which the characters grow as individuals because of each other and also the ways in which they became closer through everything they experience is brilliantly written. These are wildly different people who are forced together through circumstance (really bad circumstance), and some of them don't get along at all in the beginning, but they truly become a family by the end. It's a gradual, (realistic, I'd say) process to get there, but it's so worth it to watch those dynamics play out.

Dare is my favorite character; he's so snarky and hilarious, and you will love him or you can come fight me (j/k I'm letting Dare fight you b/c I would have no idea what to do)

There are many, many action scenes in this book, and they are all amazing and make you just want to keep reading and reading. I'm low-key jealous of the author's skills in that department. This is a fairly fast-paced book, but there are also healing moments that allow the characters to breathe and connect with one another (see 'found family' above).

Honestly, you will go to a lot of places and have some not-so-fun experiences there, but you will love every minute of it, and you will beg the author to torture you some more. I'm so excited that this is the first book in a series because I want to have so many more adventures with this group of people! And I definitely want to learn more about this story world the author has created because the parts of it I've seen in this book are so intriguing and well-presented.

Okay, so the pace of my reading is not a comment on the pace of the novel but a comment on the fact that I probably shouldn't try to read big fantasy chonks during the school year if they aren't audiobooks. Once summer came, I moved through the last two thirds at a pleasant clip. Brounstein's setting is engaging and her characters endearing, starting with a small party that gradually builds over the course of the novel (and honestly, a couple of the late comers are my favorites even though they had less time to be established, which is nothing against our main characters Verity and Dare, who are great. While eventually we get the beginnings of a couple of romance plots, the focus in this novel is on friendships, and watching Dare and Verity go from reluctant coworkers to staunch friends is honestly so satisfying.

Thank you so much to the author for letting me have an arc! I was also able to beta read this book, so I'm very excited that it'll be available soon!

This was such a delight to read. It's an adventure story with found family, really wonderful friendships, and an interesting magic system. I love that we learn about the world through the events of the book, so there's no lore dumping as some fantasy books fall prey to. And as much as I love a good love story, I love good friendship stories even more and I really appreciated that the building of trust and then love between the two MCs was platonic. I think people who play D&D and the like will really enjoy this book.

I can't wait to read the next book and see where the characters go as they continue their quest!

I want to start by saying thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader!

I’m not even sure where to begin with this review to do it justice. This book continued to keep me on the edge of my seat and wanting to come back for more. I was able to get lost in the world. The way Lindsey built it up, it was easy to understand and the characters travels were easy to follow.

The fantasy adventure and descriptions that were used allowed me to be transported into the world as though I was with the character in the prairies or galloping alongside on the backs of horses. There is action where there needs to be action and calm where there needs to be calm. The banter between characters will have you wishing for more! This will for sure be in my top reads of 2024!

Beautifully written and well-edited, the style of writing gripped me immediately and I enjoyed the layered building of how the world worked. Often, in the first few chapters, there will be a ton of exposition to try to get things across, but the author did a really solid job of using various observations to tie in world-building. Commentary on Finn’s cloak managed to get across the idea of unrest, divide, and social view of the Brothers better than several paragraphs of exposition could.

I enjoyed the variety of characters, and the casual representation. I felt like this book was just effortless and lovely. I can’t wait to read more. I just wish things had hit the ground running a bit faster.

A family member recommended this book saying it was one of the best fantasy novels she had read in a long time. Not knowing what to expect I dove in and was rewarded immediately by meeting engrossing , mostly likeable characters who cohere as a chosen family. They are portrayed in a very lifelike fashion—not archetypes but people with strengths and weaknesses some of the latter of which are self-inflicted.

The groups quest is well plotted and the action is really quite exciting. I had trouble putting the book down.

When I finished the book I went looking for the next in the series but it wasn’t out yet. Fortunately, the author was about to release the next book soon.. I bought it and consumed it so quickly I had to read it again! That’s just how good the work is!

This has been an absolutely amazing debut by a new independent author! I was blown away by her character development and world-building! What starts as a simple quest quickly balloons into a dangerous epic with the fate of the world at stake. The relationship between her characters, Dare and Verity blossoms in the face of shared adversity, and I love her cinnamon roll Drystan who tries to keep them working together. As the book progresses and we see what makes each of her characters tick (and the cast expands to even more intriguing party members) I could see the depths of her character development and was just ... wow!

This a great start to a series I am following with eager anticipation!

Fire's Hand, Fate's Heart is a fantasy set in a medieval setting of quests, kingdoms and Wardens, of old gods and new. The main characters were compelling and their journeys really kept me engaged, as well as the fast pace of the book. The magic system in this is very interesting, and the relationships with the characters themselves were refreshingly sweet to read; their loyalty and trust for each other gave this a sense of found family. I enjoyed this so much and can't wait to see how the series progresses!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I LOVED Fire’s Hand Fate’s Heart! I had never read a book strictly with a found family subplot but this was so beautifully written, the cast of characters grew so much and were so unique. The MMC and FMC had a lot to go through and let go of to learn to be seen and learn to trust and be trusted. Written in third person but with multiple points of view Fire’s Hand Fate’s Heart focuses on a mission to capture THE weapon and destroy it. However when the weapon is found…Verity and Dare find it is not what they expected. This is a book of friendship, trust and the family you choose. I absolutely loved it and I hope you do too.

I took my time with this book and glad that I did because What a roller coaster… I LOVE ROLLER COASTERS! This book was bittersweet 😭 Each character had their own personality, strengths and weaknesses. Each played a part in the story and cmon the connection between all of them??!! STRONG.

The world building was paced nicely; sometimes subtle, sometimes only bits revealed, sometimes everything is being thrown at you all at once.

The next book is out but I might need a minute before I start it. My heart needs tending 🙈 Easy recommendation to those who like magic, elemental gods, banter and bickering!
