It’s humans against monsters in a high-octane race for survival in the second installment of this apocalyptic pedal-to-the-metal LitRPG adventure.
Ever since the System brought magic and monstrous mayhem to Earth, long-haul trucker Jill “Junkmouth” MacLeod has had a need for speed. The highway snaking through the Midwestern plains is the battleground, and the stakes are the lives of not only Jill but thousands of survivors along for the ride. Together with Bertha, her mega-upgraded, fully-turreted, heavily-armored Soulbound big rig, Jill has the edge—so far.
The good news? For every blood-hungry abomination Jill has flattened into roadkill, she’s gained experience, levels, and loot to upgrade Bertha. The bad? It’s still a long and dangerous road to the East Coast, where her family is waiting for her. She just has to keep the pedal pressed down as they blaze their way through hordes of ever-stronger monsters and across a Midwest that is far bigger—and wilder—than it should be.
But if Jill thought the fallen city of Billings behind them had been bad, the road east is even worse. Outside of Bertha, the magic keeps growing more powerful, making everything—even the plants—deadlier and smarter. And inside, a darkness is taking root among the passengers, including those Jill counts on the most. Now Jill herself, so used to taking on the open road alone, will have to learn to lead—and maybe swear less. Maybe.
This is second in a System Apocalypse story and picks up right after the first. Read in order.
You know what you are getting. You get it. I loved seeing Jill grow as she starts caring about more people. And I enjoyed the details of establishing a settlement inside Bertha. The bad guys were a bit much and the eventual antagonist was a little extra and developments with .
That said, it's still five stars as I was engaged throughout and completely along for the ride. Heh.
A note about the series: The author started this on Royal Road and I was looking forward to picking up there. Only, that story hard-stopped three months ago. No activity since. No explanation. There's a very big, very real possibility that this is the end of the road. Heh. We get a decent conclusion to the story contained in this book. But there is obviously much more to go before Jill gets home. So it's a bit of a hanger (without being a cliffhanger).
A note about crude language: You read the first book. It continues in the same vein. Seriously, if you couldn't handle it in the first book, there's no way you're still here. So this is maybe an unnecessary tag.
A note about Chaste: Jill is still far from home and her partner. So there are no shenanigans. So this is pretty chaste. Except for the cursing.
Its been a while since I've found someone who can put a unique spin on a system apocalypse genre and at first I was far from optimistic. But I can honestly say there are few times I've ever been happier to be so totally wrong. This is by far one of my favorite system novels and easily earns it's place alongside the likes of Tao Wong and Blaise Corvin in my personal top 3.
More leveling, more expansion of the truck, and a lot more... Dinosaurs! Love the upgrades, and expansion of the universe in this story. There's a lot going on in this world that makes you wonder what the heck is going on, and as the characters explore the world and find more answers it just gets more and more interesting. The only down side to the book is that a few chapters seem rushed. Especially the ending which is just told in a rush of information instead of really exploring the situation. Also, a few major parts happen off screen while Jill is taking care of more mundane things back on the truck. And the major mystery aboard the truck is resolved in a half satisfying way because, again, everything happens off camera and we only see the after math. Because the entire story is told from Jill's pov, and Jill isn't at some of the biggest moments, we have a limited view. Which isn't entirely bad, but I almost feel if the author insists Jill is going to be back in the truck dealing with town meetings maybe we should also start following some of the others too. Still... With some of the mysterious happenings in the world there is a lot of room for growth in a new book, so I'm looking forward to if.
It's is still an intriguing series I want to keep exploring, good writing, feels a bit less edited to a book format. Which make some chapter transitions feel a bit clunky at times, a miss mash from an episode format to a chapter format, it might as have be that the break between the books has moved a few chapters back. It just a choice that makes it a bit harder for me to emerge as fully and easily for the first chapters of this book, which if it had been more books in LitRPG with similar characters in it I might have given up on the series here which would have made me miss out on so many interesting parts.
I so want the next instalment of the story, can't wait, so curious of what awaits
Have absolutely devoured these books in 2 days, Where's number 3???
I haven't had so many actual laugh out loud sessions while reading in a long time! I love this foul mouthed main character! I am emotionally invested in a semi truck at this point!!! Waiting with impatient anticipation for any hints towards the next book! Awesome job by this insanely imaginative author! READ THESE BOOKS!!!
Buckle up for an awesome ride. Jill keeps on trucking and the fun hasn't stopped. If you liked the 1st book in the series this is a great continuation of the adventure. With more adventure and the power of friendship Jill and Bertha will keep on following that long white line.
This book was better than okay, but not as good as the first. I'm very over the overly creative cursing. Instant eyeroll. Looking forward to book three. 👍🏽
